The Effect Of Bio-Based Materials On Quality And Shelf Life Of Celery, Chike Ifezue Aug 2009

The Effect Of Bio-Based Materials On Quality And Shelf Life Of Celery, Chike Ifezue

All Theses

Bio-based materials have garnered increasing interest as food packaging
materials because they are derived from renewable resources such
as corn starch, cellulose and sugar beet. These materials do have the disadvantage
of having
poor mechanical performance compared to non-bio based materials and their
effect on quality and shelf life of some produce is unknown.
This research studied the effect of three bio-based materials on quality
and self life of celery. Materials consist of biopolymer films and LDPE
film. The variable materials were: Polylactic Acid (PLA), a versatile
biodegradable aliphatic polyester derived from 100% renewable resources,
Ecoflex, a biodegradable aliphatic-aromatic copolyester, …

Red Raspberries Possess Anticarcinogenic And Immunostimulatory Potential, Jason God

All Dissertations

Despite the great strides made in the treatment of cancer, considerably little progress has been made towards prevention of the disease. In light of this reality, it has become apparent that a greater focus needs to be devoted to research into means of cancer prevention. Due to the significant role that nutrition plays in the development of cancer, the diet presents an attractive and logical target for such research.
Epidemiology has consistently shown an inverse relationship between fruit and vegetable consumption and risk for developing cancer. Additionally, countless in vitro studies on natural products isolated from fruits and vegetables have …

High Efficient Electrical Stimulation Of Hippocampal Slices With Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanofiber Microbrush Array, Edward D. De Asis Jr., T. D. Barbara Nguyen-Vu, Prabhu U. Arumugam, Hua Chen, Alan M. Cassell, Russell J. Andrews, Cary Y. Yang, Jun Li

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Long-term neuroprostheses for functional electrical stimulation must efficiently stimulate tissue without electrolyzing water and raising the extracellular pH to toxic levels. Comparison of the stimulation efficiency of tungsten wire electrodes (W wires), platinum microelectrode arrays (PtMEA), as-grown vertically aligned carbon nanofiber microbrush arrays (VACNF MBAs), and polypyrrole coated (PPy-coated) VACNF MBAs in eliciting field potentials in the hippocampus slice indicates that, at low stimulating voltages that preclude the electrolysis of water, only the PPy-coated VACNF MBA is able to stimulate the CA3 to CA1 pathway. Unlike the W wires, PtMEA, as-grown VACNF MBA, and the PPy-coated VACNF MBA …

Depoliticizing Judicial Review Of Agency Rulemaking, Scott A. Keller Aug 2009

Depoliticizing Judicial Review Of Agency Rulemaking, Scott A. Keller

Washington Law Review

Administrative law doctrines for reviewing agency rulemaking, such as the Supreme Court’s dicta in Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Ass’n v. State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co. and the D.C. Circuit’s hard look doctrine, give judges significant discretion to invalidate agency rules. Many commentators recognize that this discretion politicizes judicial review of agency rulemaking, as judges appointed by a president of one political party are more likely to invalidate agency rules promulgated under the presidential administration of a different political party. Unelected judges, though, should not be able to use indeterminate administrative law doctrines to invalidate agency rules on the basis …

Urbanites Versus Rural Rights: Contest Of Local Government Land-Use Regulations Under Washington Preemption Statute 82.02.020, Donya Williamson Aug 2009

Urbanites Versus Rural Rights: Contest Of Local Government Land-Use Regulations Under Washington Preemption Statute 82.02.020, Donya Williamson

Washington Law Review

In Citizens’ Alliance for Property Rights v. Sims, the Court of Appeals of Washington held that King County clearing and grading regulations—recently enacted pursuant to the Washington State Growth Management Act—constitute an unlawful “tax, fee, or charge” on the development of land, thereby violating a Washington excise tax preemption statute. The court ruled that the clearing limitations do not qualify under the statutory exception for mitigation of development impacts since they are not calculated on a site-by-site basis. This Note argues that the ruling greatly expands the scope of this statutory limitation on local land-use regulation, compromises Growth Management …

Dna Methylation Analysis Of The Mammalian Peg3 Imprinted Domain, Jennifer M. Huang, Joomyeong Kim Aug 2009

Dna Methylation Analysis Of The Mammalian Peg3 Imprinted Domain, Jennifer M. Huang, Joomyeong Kim

Faculty Publications

In this study, we performed the first systematic survey of DNA methylation status of the CpG islands of the PEG3 (Paternally expressed gene 3) imprinted domain in the mouse, cow, and human genomes. Previous studies have shown that the region surrounding the first exon of PEG3 contains a differentially methylated CpG island. In addition, we have discovered two previously unreported differentially methylated regions (DMR): one in the promoter region of mouse Zim3 and another in the promoter region of human USP29. In the cow, the Peg3-CpG island was the only area that showed DMR status. We have also examined the …

Functional Complementation Of The Arabidopsis Thaliana Psbo1 Mutant Phenotype With An N-Terminally His6-Tagged Psbo-1 Protein In Photosystem Ii, Haijun Liu, Laurie K. Frankel, Terry M. Bricker Aug 2009

Functional Complementation Of The Arabidopsis Thaliana Psbo1 Mutant Phenotype With An N-Terminally His6-Tagged Psbo-1 Protein In Photosystem Ii, Haijun Liu, Laurie K. Frankel, Terry M. Bricker

Faculty Publications

The Arabidopsis thaliana mutant psbo1 has recently been described and characterized. Loss of expression of the PsbO-1 protein leads to a variety of functional perturbations including elevated levels of the PsbO-2 protein and defects on both the oxidizing- and reducing-sides of Photosystem II. In this communication, two plant lines were produced using the psbo1 mutant as transgenic host, which contained an N-terminally histidine6-tagged PsbO-1 protein. This protein was expressed and correctly targeted into the thylakoid lumen. Immunological analysis indicated that different levels of expression of the modified PsbO-1 protein were obtained in different transgenic plant lines and that the level …

Population Dynamics And Parasitism Of Brassica Insect Pests In Zimbabwe With Emphasis On The Diamondback Moth, Plutella Xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), Walter Manyangarirwa Aug 2009

Population Dynamics And Parasitism Of Brassica Insect Pests In Zimbabwe With Emphasis On The Diamondback Moth, Plutella Xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), Walter Manyangarirwa

All Dissertations

The diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), is a major insect pest of brassicas in Zimbabwe. Field surveys were conducted to assess brassica pest management practices at large scale farms (≈2.0-10.0 ha) and smallholder farms (<2.0 ha). Insecticides used on large scale farms include λ-cyhalothrin, fenvalerate, dimethoate, malathion, diazinon, dichlorvos, kelthane and lufenuron. Smallholder farmers predominantly used dimethoate, malathion, diazinon, methamidophos, dichlorvos, fenvalerate, carbaryl and methomyl. Six out of seven smallholder farmer clusters were ranked into an Intermediate Category between Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices and Conventional Insecticide use. Smallholder farmers in the Chinamhora area were ranked into a Conventional Insecticide use category. Five out of seven large scale farms were ranked into a Conventional Insecticide use category while two of the seven farms were ranked into an Intermediate Category.
Diamondback moth larval incidence was high in the hot-dry season in October and November of both 2007 and 2008 and reached a density of 15.58 larvae per plant at Nyanga in November 2008. The major larval endoparasitoid was Cotesia plutellae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and parasitism reached 95.51% at a host density of 2.83 larvae per plant at Harem in early summer (October and November) …
