The Influence Of Post-Burial Environment And Plant-Bone Interactions On Vertebrate Preservation: An Experimental Taphonomic Study, Christopher Robert Noto Aug 2009

The Influence Of Post-Burial Environment And Plant-Bone Interactions On Vertebrate Preservation: An Experimental Taphonomic Study, Christopher Robert Noto

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Differential preservation of bone due to varying local-to-global terrestrial environmental conditions is recognized as a pervasive bias throughout the fossil record. Furthermore, the distribution of these environments has varied considerably through time, profoundly affecting what is preserved in the fossil record, and where. Little is known regarding how environment-specific decay and diagenesis affect terrestrial bone preservation, and ultimately our reconstructions of paleoecology, diversity, and biogeography. To investigate short-term processes critical in the decay and diagenesis of buried bone, I performed a 14-month controlled taphonomic experiment which explored the individual and collective effects of 1) sediment hydrology and organic content [sand …

The Role Of Nitrogenous Nutrients In The Occurrence Of The Harmful Dinoflagellate Blooms Caused By Cochlodinium Polykrikoides In Long Island Estuaries (Ny, Usa), Amanda Merle Burson

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The harmful dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides is well known for forming ichthyotoxic blooms in coastal regions of Asia and North America, but the nutritional factors supporting and promoting these blooms have not been well studied. To better understand the nutritional ecology of the harmful dinoflagellate blooms caused by Cochlodinium polykrikoides in Long Island estuaries (NY, USA), laboratory and field studies of this species were conducted. I documented the spatial and temporal dynamics of nutrients, C. polykrikoides cells, and co-occurring phytoplankton within two New York estuaries from 2006 - 2008. I quantified the growth response of C. polykrikoides and co-occurring phytoplankton during …

Segregation Of Palaemonid Shrimp Along The Shark River Estuary: Implications For Trophic Function, Lauren C. Mccarthy

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the abundance, distribution, and spatiotemporal variation of palaemonid shrimp species in relation to season and salinity in the Shark River Estuary, Everglades National Park (ENP), Florida, USA. Five palaemonid species occurred in the samples: Palaemonetes paludosus, P. pugio, P. intermedius, Palaemon floridanus, and Leander paulensis; L. paulensis was collected only during the wet season. Overall, shrimp catches in traps doubled in the dry season. Catches in the upper estuary were dominated by P. paludosus, particularly in the wet season, while catch per unit effort (CPUE) at the most downstream, …

Life As A Sober Citizen : Aldo Leopold's Wildlife Ecology 118., Nancy Stearns Theiss

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This historic case study addressed the issue of the lack of citizen action toward environmentally responsible behavior. Although there have been studies regarding components of environmental responsible behavior [ERB], there has been little focus on historic models of exemplary figures of ERB. This study examined one of the first conservation courses in the United States, Wildlife Ecology 118, taught by Aldo Leopold (1887-1948) for 13 years at the University of Wisconsin. Today, Aldo Leopold is recognized as an exemplary conservationist whose land ethic is cited as providing the ecological approach needed for understanding the complex issues of modern society. The …

Mitochondrial Targeting Of The Pro-Apoptotic Protein Bax : Role Of The Bax Carboxy-Terminal Tail., Stephanie Erin Brock 1980- Aug 2009

Mitochondrial Targeting Of The Pro-Apoptotic Protein Bax : Role Of The Bax Carboxy-Terminal Tail., Stephanie Erin Brock 1980-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Here, I address the function of the carboxy-terminal hydrophobic helix of the pro-apoptotic protein Bax. There has been considerable controversy as to whether this sequence is required for the targeting and insertion of Bax into the mitochondrial outer membrane. The Bax carboxy-terminal tail is tucked into a hydrophobic pocket within the closed/inactive conformation of Bax. Apoptotic stimulation results in an opening of the Bax conformation, exposing a mitochondrial-targeting signal and subsequent insertion of Bax into the mitochondrial outer membrane. Here, I confirm that the Bax tail alone can specifically target and anchor a cytosolic passenger protein to the mitochondria. Surprisingly, …

Christian Yoga As A Product Of Hinduism And The New Age Movement, Injib Kim Aug 2009

Christian Yoga As A Product Of Hinduism And The New Age Movement, Injib Kim

Masters Theses

This thesis is divided into four main parts. Part one examines the origin of Hindu yoga practice. It will focus on the ancient Hindu origins of modern Yoga practice. Part two deals with the introduction of yoga into the western world. It examines the socio-cultural-religious phenomenon that Yoga has become. Chapter three inspects yoga in American churches. It concerns the origins, meaning, and detailed methods of Christian Yoga. The last part formulates a biblical response to Christian yoga. It is an apologetic for biblical Christianity.

Expression Of Cpi-17 In Smooth Muscle During Embryonic Development And In Neointimal Lesion Formation., Jee In Kim, Garbo D Young, Li Jin, Avril V Somlyo, Masumi Eto

Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics Faculty Papers

Ca(2+) sensitivity of smooth muscle (SM) contraction is determined by CPI-17, an inhibitor protein for myosin light chain phosphatase (MLCP). CPI-17 is highly expressed in mature SM cells, but the expression level varies under pathological conditions. Here, we determined the expression of CPI-17 in embryonic SM tissues and arterial neointimal lesions using immunohistochemistry. As seen in adult animals, the predominant expression of CPI-17 was detected at SM tissues on mouse embryonic sections, whereas MLCP was ubiquitously expressed. Compared with SM alpha-actin, CPI-17 expression doubled in arterial SM from embryonic day E10 to E14. Like SM alpha-actin and other SM marker …

Anticancer Properties Of Research-Grade Hydrastis Canadensis (Goldenseal) And Characterization Of Its Effect On The Mdr1-Encoded Phosphoglycoprotein Efflux Pump, Sara Garrett

All Theses

Multiple drug resistance (MDR) in tumors, observed both in vivo and in vitro, is generally attributed to efflux-mediated reduced drug accumulation via mdr1/P-gp. Notoriously chemoresistant colorectal cancers exhibit the highest P-gp expression, account for 9% of all cancer deaths, and are the third most common cancer in men and women. P-gp, a 170kDa protein, contains twelve transmembrane segments with two ATP-binding domains used to extrude intracellular compounds of broad specificity against a concentration gradient. Studies concerning natural health products are becoming more prevalent in the search for safe anti-P-gp remedies and Hydrastis canadensis (goldenseal) was studied for its anti-cancer properties. …

Sedentary Behavior And Obesity In A Large Cohort Of Children, Jonathan A. Mitchell, Calum Mattocks, Andy R. Ness, Sam D. Leary, Russell R. Pate, Marsha Dowda, Steven N. Blair, Chris Riddoch

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to examine the association between sedentary behavior and obesity among 12-year-old children, while adjusting for moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and other potential confounding variables.

Cross-sectional analyses were carried out with data from 5434 children who participated in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC). Fat mass was derived using dual x-ray emission absorptiometry (DXA), and height and weight measurements were used to calculate body mass index (BMI; kg/m2). The children wore an accelerometer for seven days. The cut points for sedentary behavior and MVPA were ≤199 cpm and ≥3600 cpm, …

Stable And Reproducible Electronic Conduction Through Dna Molecular Junctions, Ajit K. Mahapatro, Gil Lee, Kyung J. Jeong, David B. Janes Aug 2009

Stable And Reproducible Electronic Conduction Through Dna Molecular Junctions, Ajit K. Mahapatro, Gil Lee, Kyung J. Jeong, David B. Janes

Birck and NCN Publications

This letter presents the observation of stable and reproducible electronic conduction through double stranded (ds) DNA molecules in a nominally dry state. Stable conduction was realized by immobilizing 15 base-pair guanine:cytosine rich dsDNA within gold nanogap junctions, stabilizing the dsDNA with a polycation, and characterizing in nitrogen. In air, the current levels decrease with successive voltage scans likely due to oxidation of the guanine bases under bias. In nitrogen, reproducible current-voltage traces are observed and the current levels at specific bias points are stable with time. The stability allows comprehensive electrical studies and could enable conductance-based DNA sensors.

Thermionic Emission Energy Distribution From Nanocrystalline Diamond Films For Direct Thermal-Electrical Energy Conversion Applications, Kishore Uppireddi, Tyler Westover, Timothy Fisher, Brad Weiner, Gerardo Morell Aug 2009

Thermionic Emission Energy Distribution From Nanocrystalline Diamond Films For Direct Thermal-Electrical Energy Conversion Applications, Kishore Uppireddi, Tyler Westover, Timothy Fisher, Brad Weiner, Gerardo Morell

Birck and NCN Publications

In the ongoing quest for energy production by nonconventional methods, energy conversion by vacuum and solid-state thermionic emission devices is one of the potentially efficient pathways for converting thermal energy directly into electrical power. The realization of practical of thermionic energy conversion devices strongly depends on achieving low work function materials, which is thus far a limiting factor. In an attempt to develop a new low work function thermionic material, this work reports thermionic emission energy distributions (TEEDs) from nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) films in the temperature range from 700 to 900 °C that reveal a consistent effective work function of …

Simulation-Based Sequential Bayesian Filtering With Rao-Blackwellization Applied To Nonlinear Dynamic State Space Models, Mahsiul Khan Aug 2009

Simulation-Based Sequential Bayesian Filtering With Rao-Blackwellization Applied To Nonlinear Dynamic State Space Models, Mahsiul Khan

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Stochastic models are used to describe many real world random processes which necessitate the extraction of hidden (unobserved) states (signals) from noisy observable (measured) outputs. We consider a class of nonlinear dynamic state space models which contain conditionally linear and unknown static parameters. For tracking the a posteriori distribution of the hidden states of this type of models, one can apply particle filtering, which is an increasingly popular method in many fields of science and engineering. It is based on the Bayesian methodology and approximations of the distributions of interest with random measures composed of samples (particles) from the space …
