Cancer stem cells (CSCs) have recently been identified in leukaemia and solid tumours; however, the role of CSCs in metastasis remains poorly understood. This dearth of knowledge about CSCs and metastasis is due largely to technical challenges associated with the use of primary human cancer cells in pre-clinical models of metastasis. Therefore, the objective of this study was to develop suitable pre-clinical model systems for studying stem-like cells in breast cancer metastasis, and to test the hypothesis that stem-like cells play a key role in metastatic behaviour. We assessed four different human breast cancer cell lines (MDA-MB-435, MDA-MB-231, MDA-MB-468, MCF-7) …

Criminal Law As A Constitutive Strategy: The Colombian Case, Farid Samir Benavides Vanegas
Research Papers
In this text I analyze the role criminal law has played in the production of subaltern subjectivities in Colombia. Criminal law and criminological discourse have been important to control subaltern groups and to constitute their identities. Colombian elites have appealed to criminal law to solve their social problems, in a strategy that has been labeled as laws symbolic efficiency or as 'penal efficienticism'.'

Stimulus Type, Level Of Categorization, And Spatial-Frequencies Utilization: Implications For Perceptual Categorization Hierarchies, Assaf Harel, Shlomo Bentin

The type of visual information needed for categorizing faces and nonface objects was investigated by manipulating spatial frequency scales available in the image during a category verification task addressing basic and subordinate levels. Spatial filtering had opposite effects on faces and airplanes that were modulated by categorization level. The absence of low frequencies impaired the categorization of faces similarly at both levels, whereas the absence of high frequencies was inconsequential throughout. In contrast, basic-level categorization of airplanes was equally impaired by the absence of either low or high frequencies, whereas at the subordinate level, the absence of high frequencies had …

The extent to which tillage systems modify the near-surface soil aggregate properties aff ecting soil’s susceptibility to erosion by water and wind is not well understood. We hypothesized that an increase in soil organic carbon (SOC) content with conservation tillage systems, particularly no-till (NT), may improve near-surface soil aggregate properties that infl uence soil erodibility. This regional study assessed changes in aggregate resistance to raindrops, dry aggregate wettability, and dry aggregate stability as well as their relationships with changes in SOC content. Four long-term (>19 yr) tillage systems including moldboard plow (MP), conventional till (CT), reduced till (RT), and …

Courtrooms As Battlefields In The Evolution War: Examining Judicial Behavior And The Outcomes Of Cases Involving Public Education And Religion, Trevor W. Ramsey
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Over the past century, various challenges to the teaching of the theory of evolution have made their way to the courts, with the two most recent dealing with the concept of "intelligent design." The goal of this study is to attempt to find indicators that could help predict how judges will decide these types of cases in the future. Due to the low number of such cases, this study looked at the issue from the broader perspective of conflicts between religion and public schools. Focusing on federal district and appellate courts, sixty-eight cases were selected, with 145 rulings from 121 …

The Cost Of Doing Business: Corporate Vicarious Criminal Liability For The Negligent Discharge Of Oil Under The Clean Water Act, Katherine A. Swanson
The Cost Of Doing Business: Corporate Vicarious Criminal Liability For The Negligent Discharge Of Oil Under The Clean Water Act, Katherine A. Swanson
Washington Law Review
In response to massive oil spills that damaged America’s waters, devastated local economies, killed wildlife, and cost taxpayers millions in clean-up costs, Congress passed the Oil Pollution Act of 1990. The Act amended the Federal Water Pollution Control Act to allow for criminal prosecution of negligent oil discharges. This Comment argues that although the plain language of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act’s negligent discharge provision is silent regarding corporate vicarious criminal liability, courts should give full effect to Congress’s intent—to protect the health and safety of the public and the environment and to stop corporations from accepting oils spills …

Birth Weight As A Risk Factor For Breast Cancer: A Meta-Analysis Of 18 Epidemiologic Studies, Xiaohui Xu, Amy B. Dailey, Mary Peoples-Sheps, Evelyn O. Talbott, Ning Li, Jeffrey Roth
Health Sciences Faculty Publications
Background: Birth weight has been identified as a birth-related factor associated with the risk of breast cancer. However, the evidence is inconsistent.
Methods: To investigate the association between birth weight and breast cancer, we conducted a meta-analysis of published studies between 1996 and 2008. Eighteen studies encompassing 16,424 breast cancer cases were included in the meta-analysis. Data were combined using a fixed-effect or random-effect model depending on the heterogeneity across studies.
Results: Women with their own birth weight >4000 g or 8.5 lb had a higher risk for developing breast cancer than those with birth weight(OR¼1.20, 95% CI 1.08, 1.34). …

The need for childhood education was studied and, based upon experiences garnered as a Kindergarten teacher, Cub Club was created and implemented in order to begin to reduce the achievement gap. The program was designed to educate parents about the importance of family involvement and the benefits, lasting into adulthood, of working with children at home during their early years of learning.

Excerpt: "In February 2009 the provost approved the “SoTL at Georgia Southern” initiative, some of which was already underway. Additional components will be added during 2009-2010 as the CET aspires to help Georgia Southern become a National (even International) Center for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (SoTL). Since SoTL’s purpose is to improve student learning, the initiative is strongly compatible with the University’s strategic planning, QEP, institutional aspirations, Doctoral Research designation, and the attraction and retention of good students and faculty."
The Effect Of Label Information On Farmers' Pesticide Choice, Tomas Nestor Hasing
The Effect Of Label Information On Farmers' Pesticide Choice, Tomas Nestor Hasing
All Theses
This study analyzed the effect of label information on farmers' herbicide choices. Two approaches were used as theoretical framework for the analysis: a hedonic model using the household production theory and a discrete choice random utility model. Models based on label information were compared with a model estimated with information from Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS's). The results indicate that health and environmental statements displayed on pesticide labels reduce significantly the probability of selection. In addition, the statistical results suggest that farmers' understanding of the human safety and environmental characteristics of herbicides is more in line with the information displayed …

Ice Storm Effects On The Canopy Structure Of A Northern Hardwood Forest After 8 Years, Brian C. Weeks, Steven P. Hamburg, Matthew A. Vadeboncoeur
All Materials
Ice storms can cause severe damage to forest canopies, resulting in differential mortality among tree species and size classes and leading to long-lasting changes in the vertical structure and composition of the forest. An intense ice storm in 1998 damaged large areas of the northern hardwood forest, including much of the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, New Hampshire (USA). Following up on detailed poststorm assessments, we measured changes in the vertical structure of the forest canopy 8 years poststorm. We focused on how the presence of disease-induced advance regeneration of American beech (Fagus grandifolia Ehrh.) has affected canopy structure in the …
