The Formation Of "Outsider" Through Labeling And Sentence Lengths For Immigrants Of Hispanic Descent., Jeremy Jason Smith
The Formation Of "Outsider" Through Labeling And Sentence Lengths For Immigrants Of Hispanic Descent., Jeremy Jason Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if individuals who supported denying citizenship to children of foreign parentage and making English the sole language spoken in the United States held the opinion that a sentence length over 15 years was appropriate for non-U.S. individuals. Other purposes were to determine if individuals with high religiosity or who carried a lethal weapon also held the opinion that a sentence length over 15 years was appropriate for non-U.S. individuals.
Pearson's Chi-Square was used to determine if a significant relationship existed between the independent variables and the dependent variable. The data indicated that …

Hunger Of The Body, Hunger Of The Mind: The Experience Of Food Insecurity In Rural, Non-Peninsular Malaysia, Elizabeth Elliott Cooper
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Supplementary feeding continues to be a widespread strategy for child health promotion though its efficacy remains contested. The long-standing, Malaysian national food assistance program for children - Program Pemulihan Kanak-Kanak Kekurangan Zat Makanan (PPKZM) - fits this pattern, receiving severe criticism for its limited impact on child nutritional status. Still, the program remains, producing a seeming paradox and prompting questions of how it fits into (1) the larger political context of national health policy and (2) more localized village and clinic environments. This research combines historical inquiry with the in-depth, ethnographic study of two predominantly Malay coastal villages in Malaysian …

Long Lasting Recruitment Of Immune Cells And Altered Epiperineurial Thickness In Focal Nerve Inflammation Induced By Complete Freund's Adjuvant, Geoffrey M. Bove
Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications
Immune-mediated nerve inflammation is involved in many painful states in humans, and causes axonal and behavioral changes in rats. While models of nerve inflammation have been characterized using electrophysiological and behavioral methods, the presence of immune cells has not been fully assessed. We inflamed rat sciatic nerves using complete Freund's adjuvant and quantified the presence of ED-1 macrophages and TCR-αβ T-cells for up to 12 weeks. We report that these immune cells are prominent extraneurally up to 12 weeks following the induction of inflammation. This observation does not easily correlate with inflammation-induced axonal mechanical sensitivity, which peaks within 1 week …

Herein we report the use of protein-gold nanoconjugate (PGNs) as probes for elucidating mechanistic events involved in protein homocystamide detection with gold nanoparticles (GNPs), as was previously reported by our laboratory. Three different PGN probes are synthesized by direct adsorption of cytochrome c, albumin, or human serum onto citrate-capped GNPs. The PGNs are subsequently purified and treated to confer N-homocysteinylation. Individual PGN systems are evaluated to assess the effect of modification on (1) surface plasmon resonance (SPR), (2) protein structural conformation, and (3) assembly-association. The degree of PGN assembly and colorimetric signal observed postmodification varies based on the type of …

Like Sands Through The Hourglass: How To Develop A Good Legal Research Problem, Susan T. Phillips
Faculty Scholarship
Attorneys have a duty to conduct adequate legal research. Law schools have an obligation to educate students in the standard research techniques. To learn research, students must actually perform research using research problems. Therefore, professors must design appropriate problems for students to learn research skills. The first part of this article discusses the fundamentals of developing a research problem. The second part provides examples of research problems with an explanation of their development.

The visual part of this project has revolved around ideas that have been in the process of forming themselves for a few years. But if I could assign a topic or a totalizing theme to the project, I would be limiting it in a very particular way. I see Nostalgia as a beginning and in no way something that has come to fruition or to a speci!c resolution. If anything I consider it as a still evolving subject; it is very youthful and fresh for me. The project also rejects a new way of working for me from creating the …
Ion Channel Modulation By Photocaged Dioctanoyl Pip2, Junghoon Ha
Ion Channel Modulation By Photocaged Dioctanoyl Pip2, Junghoon Ha
Theses and Dissertations
Phosphatidylinositol bisphosphate (PIP2) directly regulates electrophysiological activity in a diverse family of ion channels whether the effect is stimulatory or inhibitory. Much has been unveiled about the apparent affinity and modulatory function of PIP2 using a chemically modified dioctanoyl PIP2 (diC8), a membrane delimited cytosolic co-factor in inside-out macropatch experiments. Yet, the scarcity of molecular tools that permit fine external control in whole-cell systems has precluded future studies from probing the physiological role of PIP2 in cells in the presence of a fully intact cytoplasm. Here we introduce light as an external control for PIP2 through photocaging of diC8, and …

Relatedness As An Indicator Of Group Cohesion And Its Relationship To Outcomes Of A Group-Based Cbsm Intervention For Women Who Have Completed Treatment For Breast Cancer, Maria Del Rosario Morillo-Falero
Open Access Dissertations
Group delivered empirically supported therapies have been reported to have beneficial effects for cancer patients. However, little is known about the relationship between group cohesion and outcomes of these interventions. This study tested the hypothesis that group cohesion relates to the effects of a group intervention. Participants included 56 women with Stage I to II breast cancer who had completed a 10-week CBSM intervention 3 to 12 months after undergoing surgery and adjuvant therapy. Groups of 3 - 5 participants met weekly for sessions of approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes duration. All participants were assessed at baseline (2 weeks …

A Mosquito (Diptera: Culicidae) Model For The Transmission Of Tularemia, Alison N. Triebenbach
A Mosquito (Diptera: Culicidae) Model For The Transmission Of Tularemia, Alison N. Triebenbach
Biological Sciences
Tularemia is a plague-like disease caused by the bacterium Francisella tularensis. In Scandinavian countries tularemia transmission is clinically attributed to mosquitoes. To examine the transmission of tularemia by mosquitoes I exposed Aedes aegypti and Anopheles gambiae larvae to F. tularensis and tested all life stages for bacterial DNA using real-time polymerase chain reaction (rtPCR). I fed adult A. aegypti and An. gambiae a blood meal containing F. novicida and tested for DNA 24, 48 and 72 hours after feeding. Seventy-two hours after the F. novicida blood meal I allowed A. aegypti and An. gambiae to feed on a mouse. My …

Places Of Significance In Itelmen Country: Sacredness, Nostalgia And Identity In Kamchatka, Russia, Tatiana S. Degai
Anthropology
"This research was conducted among Itelmen people, a small indigenous group who live on the Kamchatka peninsula in the Russian Far East. The thesis explores places of significance and sacred places of Itelmens who traditionally occupied most of the peninsula. At present the majority live on the Western coast of Kamchatka on the Okhotsk Sea shore. Providing some historical background, outcomes of colonization and western presence, and description of contemporary Itelmen worldview, this study offers an overview of Itelmen concepts of perceiving, knowing, appreciating and "animating" places. These concepts are formed primarily on the basis of a sense of loss …
Mapping Moose: Moose As A Proxy For Humans In The Mapping Of Stable Isotope Values In The Tanana Valley, Alaska For Forensic Purposes, Kathryn K. Dewey
Mapping Moose: Moose As A Proxy For Humans In The Mapping Of Stable Isotope Values In The Tanana Valley, Alaska For Forensic Purposes, Kathryn K. Dewey
Anthropology
"There are currently 100,000 open missing persons cases and 40,000 sets of unidentified human remains in medical examiners' offices across the nation. Stable isotope analyses can serve as a first line of inquiry to narrow down the possible region of origin for skeletal remains. The analysis of the variation between the isotope ratios of oxygen (¹⁸O/¹⁶O) is of particular value for this purpose. Local water resources determine body [delta]¹⁸O and these values should remain predictable for local fauna and humans. This study fills a void in the isotopic record of interior Alaska. It provides an updated predictive [delta]¹⁸O model for …
Outbreeding Depression And Inheritance In Three Generations Of Geographically Distinct Southeast Alaska Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus Kisutch) Populations, Tyler H. Dann
Fisheries
I observed no fitness losses among F₂ hybrids of three Southeast Alaska coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) populations relative to parental controls. Marine survival did not differ among groups in one generation, but was greater for hybrids than controls in another, although the power of these tests was low. Increases in fluctuating asymmetry, which can signal losses in fitness, were not observed. Line cross analyses of length suggested additive and additive plus dominance gene action, and two of three analyses suggested epistasis. In contrast, meristic characters exhibited little variability; and in most cases tests failed to reject a simple additive model. …

River Features Associated With Chinook Salmon Spawning Habitat In Southwest Alaska, Deena M. Jallen
Fisheries
Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) is a highly valued traditional, subsistence, and commercial resource in Southwest Alaska. Stream habitat availability is a major component influencing salmon productivity. The objective of this study is to identify river features associated with spawning habitat, and describe upper and lower boundaries of chinook salmon spawning on the Tuluksak River. River distances, elevation, salmon locations, spawning sites, and habitat observations were collected along 75 river kilometers of the Tuluksak River primarily within the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge. Habitat and salmon observations were grouped into strata along the length of the river for comparison and analysis. …

Validation And Application Of Infrared Thermography For The Assessment Of Body Condition In Pinnipeds, Jeanette Nienaber
Marine Biology
Infrared thermography (IRT) was used to collect baseline information on skin surface temperatures of two species of pinnipeds, the harbor seal (Phoca vitulina; n = 6) and the Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus; n = 2). The IRT technique was validated against objects of known temperature and through post-collection software manipulation of environmental parameters that influence IRT output (emissivity, distance, relative humidity, ambient temperature and reflected temperature). From February 2007 to February 2008, biweekly measurements were taken of skin surface temperature (FLIR P25 infrared camera) with subsequent measurements of blubber depth (SonoSite Vet 180 portable imaging ultrasound system) on captive …
Quantifying Diet To Tissue Isotopic (Δ¹³C And Δ¹⁵N) Fractionation Factors In Captive Spectacled Eiders (Somateria Fischeri): Implications For Nutrient Allocation And Foraging Studies, Rebekka Federer
Marine Biology
"The spectacled eider (Somateria fischeri) was listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 1993, and potential threats to population recovery include changes in the marine prey abundance and availability. Therefore, development of diet assessment techniques has been listed as an eider recovery task. Stable isotopes have been used to evaluate foraging ecology and nutrient allocation to reproduction in birds. Application of this technique requires knowledge of how stable isotope signatures of animal tissues differ from their diet, referred to as isotopic fractionation, and these values can be determined experimentally using captive populations. I established stable isotopic fractionation factors …

A study was conducted to demonstrate the first atomic force microscopy (AFM) based investigation of single-molecule (SM) force spectroscopy (FS). A bimolecular G-quadruplex formed between the AFM probe and a gold surface was used as the model system to conduct the investigations. A gold-coated Si 3N4 probe and a flat gold surface were functionalized with a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of the 3G or 4G DNA. A loading rate dependence investigation was conducted to estimate kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of the 3G and 4G quadruplexes. Rupture forces were measured at loading rates ranging from 1027-43 500 pNs-1. It was observed that …
Creosote Treated Timber In The Alaskan Marine Environment, Robert Perkins
Creosote Treated Timber In The Alaskan Marine Environment, Robert Perkins
AIDC Project Reports
Creosote is a wood preservative that is used in marine structures in Alaska, such as piles, docks, and floating structures. Some of the PAH chemicals in creosote are toxic to marine organisms, and resources agencies and environmental groups question its use. Mesoscale testing of creosoted wood has not indicated significant negative effects of wood treated with Best Management Practices (BMP), which is now standard practice. The EPA pesticide recertification of creosote required only the use of BMP or a risk assessment. The National Marine Fisheries Service issued draft guidelines for wood preservatives, which does not preclude use of creosote, but …

Cellulose Degrading Microorganisms In Alaskan Boreal Forest Soil, Kelsie Marie Stone
Biological Sciences
"Cellulose is the most abundant organic compound on earth, and has been studied intensely. This thesis includes a review of previous studies and literature compiled on cellulose degradation and its significance to biofuel production. It also reports a study designed to advance knowledge of cellulose degrading bacteria and fungi in Alaskan boreal forest soil. This was accomplished using stable isotope probing (SIP) in soil microcosms and community analyses of organisms colonizing in situ buried Birch Tongue Depressors (BTDs). We identified which organisms incorporated a 13C cellulose label into their genomic material, finding degradation to be dominated by fungi. Fungi from …
Resilience Of A Deer Hunting System In Southeast Alaska: Integrating Social, Ecological, And Genetic Dimensions, Todd J. Brinkman
Resilience Of A Deer Hunting System In Southeast Alaska: Integrating Social, Ecological, And Genetic Dimensions, Todd J. Brinkman
Biological Sciences
I examined the interactions of key components of a hunting system of Sitka black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus sitkensis) on Prince of Wales Island, Alaska to address concerns of subsistence hunters and to provide a new tool to more effectively monitor deer populations. To address hunter concerns, I documented local knowledge and perceptions of changes in harvest opportunities of deer over the last 50 years as a result of landscape change (e.g., logging, roads). To improve deer monitoring, I designed an efficient method to sample and survey deer pellets, tested the feasibility of identifying individual deer from fecal DNA, and used …

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd) And Gender Differences, Christina A. Carducci
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd) And Gender Differences, Christina A. Carducci
Theses
Few studies investigate gender differences concerning Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) (Hinshaw, 2002). Further, studies that examine self-report ratings of ADHD in females are lacking. Self-reports are crucial to identifying ADHD in females who have been found to have more internalizing symptoms of ADHD (Quinn, 2005). Current models suggest that executive function, rather than attention, is the core deficit of ADHD and that it may serve as a neurobehavioral domain that differentiates individuals with ADHD based on subtype and gender (Wodka et al., 2008). This study examined gender differences on the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Functioning- Adult Version (BRIEF-A) …
