Medical image is usually comprised of region of interest (ROI) and region of non interest (RONI). ROI is the region that contains the important information from diagnosis point of view so it must be stored without any distortion. We have proposed a digital watermarking technique which avoids the distortion of image in ROI by embedding the watermark information in RONI. The watermark is comprised of patient information, hospital logo and message authentication code, computed using hash function. Earlier BCH encryption of watermark is performed to ensure inaccessibility of embedded data to the adversaries.

In this paper, we present a variation of Genetic Algorithm (GA) for finding the Optimized shortest path of the network. The algorithm finds the optimal path based on the bandwidth and utilization of the network. The main distinguishing element of this work is the use of ldquo2-point over 1-point crossoverrdquo. The population comprises of all chromosomes (feasible and infeasible). Moreover, it is of variable length, so that the algorithm can perform efficiently in all scenarios. Rankbased selection is used for cross-over operation. Therefore, the best chromosomes crossover and give the most suitable offsprings. If the resulting offsprings are least fitted, …

Artificial Intelligence – Ii: Retinal Image Blood Vessel Segmentation, M. Usman Akram, Anam Tariq, Shoab A. Khan
International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies
The appearance and structure of blood vessels in retinal images play an important role in diagnosis of eye diseases. This paper proposes a method for segmentation of blood vessels in color retinal images. We present a method that uses 2-D Gabor wavelet to enhance the vascular pattern. We locate and segment the blood vessels using adaptive thresholding. The technique is tested on publicly available DRIVE database of manually labeled images which has been established to facilitate comparative studies on segmentation of blood vessels in retinal images. The proposed method achieves an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.963 …

Theses
The Seven Prerequisites for Life is a biological sculpture that exhibits all of the main functions of a natural organism: growth, evolution, metabolism, response, reproduction, order, and regulation. Exhibited in Rochester, New York in December 2007, this sculpture has attained recognition in local news media and the internationally syndicated Ripley's Believe It or Not for its innovation in the field of art-science integration. The following thesis explores my artistic motivations behind this endeavor, traversing from early fascination with magic through more mature investigations into the relationship between the fine arts, sciences, and mathematics. Intertwined with my enduring attraction to photography …

Blind source extraction (BSE) may be an essential but a challenging task where multiple sources are convolved and/or time delayed. In this article we discuss the performance of multivariate calibration techniques that comprise of classical least square (CLS), inverse linear regression (ILS), principal component regression (PCR) and partial least square regression (PLS) in achieving this task in robust speech recognition systems with varying signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). We specifically analyze two methods for identifying and removing outliers from the sample, namely; outlier sample removal (OSR) and descriptor selection (DS) for classical least square and factor Based regression respectively, which results in …

In this paper, we present a novel technique of building hybrid decision support systems which integrates traditional decision support systems with agent based models for use in breast cancer analysis for better prediction and recommendation. Our system is based on using queries from data (converted to a standardized electronic template) to provide for simulation variables in an agent-based model. The goal is to develop an ICT tool to assist non-specialist biologist researcher users in performing analysis of large amounts of data by applying simple simulation techniques. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this novel decision support system, an extensive breast cancer …

Thermionic Emission Energy Distribution From Nanocrystalline Diamond Films For Direct Thermal-Electrical Energy Conversion Applications, Kishore Uppireddi, Tyler Westover, Timothy Fisher, Brad H. Weiner, Gerardo Morell
Birck and NCN Publications
In the ongoing quest for energy production by nonconventional methods, energy conversion by vacuum and solid-state thermionic emission devices is one of the potentially efficient pathways for converting thermal energy directly into electrical power. The realization of practical of thermionic energy conversion devices strongly depends on achieving low work function materials, which is thus far a limiting factor. In an attempt to develop a new low work function thermionic material, this work reports thermionic emission energy distributions (TEEDs) from nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) films in the temperature range from 700 to 900 degrees C that reveal a consistent effective work function …

Metabolic Depression Is Delayed And Mitochondrial Impairment Averted During Prolonged Anoxia In The Ghost Shrimp, Lepidophthalmus Louisianensis (Schmitt, 1935), Jeremy D. Holman, Steven C. Hand
Faculty Publications
Lepidophthalmus louisianensis burrows deeply into oxygen-limited estuarine sediments and is subjected to extended anoxia at low tides. Large specimens (> 2 g) have a lethal time for 50% mortality (LT50) of 64 h under anoxia at 25 °C. Small specimens (< 1 g) have a significantly higher LT50 of 113 h, which is the longest ever reported for a crustacean. Whole body lactate levels rise dramatically under anoxia and exceed 120 μmol g.f.w.- 1 by 72 h. ATP, ADP, and AMP do not change during 48 h of anoxia, but arginine phosphate declines by over 50%. Thus arginine phosphate may help stabilize the ATP pool. Surprisingly, when compared to the aerobic resting rate, ATP production under anoxia declines only moderately during the first 12 h, and drops to only about 30% between 12 and 48 h. Finally, after 48 h of anoxia, a major metabolic depression to less than 5% occurs. Downregulation of metabolism is delayed in L. louisianensis compared to many invertebrates that exhibit facultative anaerobiosis. Bioenergetic constraints as a result of eventual metabolic depression lead to ionic disturbances like calcium overload and compromised membrane potential of mitochondria. Because these phenomena trigger apoptosis in mammalian species, we evaluated the susceptibility of ghost shrimp mitochondria to opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (MPTP) and associated damage. Energized mitochondria isolated from hepatopancreas possess a pronounced capacity for calcium uptake. Exogenous calcium does not stimulate opening of the MPTP, which potentially could reduce cell death during prolonged anoxia. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The chromosomal passenger complex (CPC) regulates various events in cell division. This complex is composed of a catalytic subunit, Aurora B kinase, and three nonenzymatic subunits, INCENP, Survivin, and Borealin. Together, these four subunits interdependently regulate CPC function, and they are highly conserved among eukaryotes. However, a Borealin homologue has never been characterized in the fission yeast, Schizosaccharomyces pombe. Here, we isolate a previously uncharacterized S. pombe protein through association with the Cdc14 phosphatase homologue, Clp1/Flp1, and identify it as a Borealin-like member of the CPC. Nbl1 (novel Borealin-like 1) physically associates with known CPC components, affects the kinase activity …

Parkinson's disease is a debilitating movement disorder characterized by altered levels of α6β2* nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) localized on presynaptic striatal catecholaminergic neurons. α-Conotoxin MII (α-CTx MII) is a highly useful ligand to probe α6ß2 nAChRs structure and function, but it does not discriminate among closely related α6* nAChR subtypes. Modification of the α-CTx MII primary sequence led to the identification of α-CTx MII[E11A], an analog with 500-5300 fold discrimination between α6* subtypes found in both human and non-human primates. α-CTx MII[E11A] binds most strongly (femtomolar dissociation constant) to …

Regional fates in the developing limbs of Drosophila melanogaster are controlled by selector gene transcription factors. Ventral fate in the fly leg is specified by the expression of the ligand Wingless. We present evidence that midline and H15, members of the Tbx20 class of T-box transcription factors, are key mediators of the Wingless signal in the formation of the ventral region of the fly leg. midline and H15 are restricted to identical ventral domains of expression through activation by Wingless and repression by the dorsal signal Decapentaplegic. midline and H15 function redundantly and cell autonomously in the formation of …

Laser capture microdissection (LCM) is a versatile computer-assisted dissection method that permits collection of tissue samples with a remarkable level of anatomical resolution. LCM's application to the study of human brain pathology is growing, although it is still relatively underutilized, compared with other areas of research. The present study examined factors that affect the utility of LCM, as performed with an Arcturus Veritas, in the study of gene expression in the human brain using frozen tissue sections. LCM performance was ascertained by determining cell capture efficiency and the quality of RNA extracted from human brain tissue under varying conditions. Among …

Correlation Of Clinical Symptoms With Temporal And Frontoparietal Lobe Response During An Auditory 'Odball' Task Of Chronic And First Episode Schizophrenia Patients (N=190), Michael Benavidez, Michelle Juarez, Vincent Clark, B Ho, G Kuperberg, T White, Vince Calhoun
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
The disorder of schizophrenia is defined by the presence of positive and negative clinical symptoms. One of the hallmark positive symptoms is the presence of auditory hallucinations which have previously been studied to involve bilateral temporal lobe anamolies. Our study seeks to further define and potentially quantify these anamolies in temporal lobe response by looking at the correlation of clinical symptoms with temporal lobe activation. To accomplish this task we have subjected 22 first episode and 64 chronic patients along with 104 matched healthy controls to a functional MRI scan while undergoing an auditory oddball' task. Analysis of this data …

Traffic Signal Control With Swarm Intelligence, David Renfrew, Xiao-Hua Yu
Electrical Engineering
Traffic signal control is an effective way to regulate traffic flow to avoid conflict and reduce congestion. The ACO (Ant Colony Optimization) algorithm is an optimization technique based on swarm intelligence. This research investigates the application of ACO to traffic signal control problem. The decentralized, collective, stochastic, and self-organization properties of this algorithm fit well with the nature of traffic networks. Computer simulation results show that this method outperforms the conventional fully actuated control, especially under the condition of high traffic demand.

BACKGROUND: Mass drug administration (MDA) is the emphasis of an ongoing global lymphatic filariasis (LF) elimination program by the World Health Organization, in which the entire 'at risk' human population is treated annually with anti-filarial drugs. However, there is evidence that the MDA strategy may not be equally appropriate in all areas of LF transmission, leading to calls for the augmentation of MDA with anti-vector interventions. One potential augmentative intervention is the elimination of vectors via repeated inundative releases of male mosquitoes made cytoplasmically incompatible via an infection with Wolbachia bacteria. However, with a reduction in the vector population size, …

Preparation And Characterization Of An Electrospun Gelatin/Dendrimer Hybrid Nanofiber Dressing, Alicia P. Smith-Freshwater
Theses and Dissertations
A novel dendritic wound dressing was designed and characterized for its potential to treat chronic wounds. Comprised of gelatin, dendrimer, synthetic polymer and antibiotics, the dressing was electrospun to mimic the natural extracellular matrix (ECM). Gelatin is biocompatible, biodegradable, non-toxic, and easily available. The antibiotic, doxycycline, has the ability to inhibit matrix metalloproteinases. Matrix metalloproteinases, which occur in excess in chronic wounds, degrade the reconstituted ECM. Starburst™ polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimer G3.5, which provides a versatile and structurally controlled architecture to construct nanomedicine, was covalently bonded to the gelatin backbone and electrospun into nanofibers with gelatin, doxycycline and stabilizing polymers. The …

Epigenetic control of gene transcription is critical for normal human development and cellular differentiation. While alterations of epigenetic marks such as DNA methylation have been linked to cancers and many other human diseases, interindividual epigenetic variations in normal tissues due to aging, environmental factors, or innate susceptibility are poorly characterized. The plasticity, tissue-specific nature, and variability of gene expression are related to epigenomic states that vary across individuals. Thus, population-based investigations are needed to further our understanding of the fundamental dynamics of normal individual epigenomes. We analyzed 217 non-pathologic human tissues from 10 anatomic sites at 1,413 autosomal CpG loci …
