Variable Temperature Sensitivity Of Soil Organic Carbon In North American Forests, Cinzia Fissore, Christian P. Giardina, Christopher W. Swanston, Gary M. King, Randall K. Kolka

Faculty Publications

We investigated mean residence time (MRT) for soil organic carbon (SOC) sampled from paired hardwood and pine forests located along a 22 °C mean annual temperature (MAT) gradient in North America. We used acid hydrolysis fractionation, radiocarbon analyses, long-term laboratory incubations (525-d), and a three-pool model to describe the size and kinetics of the acid insoluble C (AIC), active and slow SOC fractions in soil. We found that active SOC was 2 ± 0.2% (mean ± SE) of total SOC, with an MRT of 33 ± 6 days that decreased strongly with increasing MAT. In contrast, MRT for slow SOC …

Coordination Of Ribosomal Protein And Ribosomal Rna Gene Expression In Response To Tor Signaling, Li Juan Xiao, Anne Grove Aug 2009

Coordination Of Ribosomal Protein And Ribosomal Rna Gene Expression In Response To Tor Signaling, Li Juan Xiao, Anne Grove

Faculty Publications

Cells grow in response to nutrients or growth factors, whose presence is detected and communicated by elaborate signaling pathways. Protein kinases play crucial roles in processes such as cell cycle progression and gene expression, and misregulation of such pathways has been correlated with various diseased states. Signals intended to promote cell growth converge on ribosome biogenesis, as the ability to produce cellular proteins is intimately tied to cell growth. Part of the response to growth signals is therefore the coordinate expression of genes encoding ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and ribosomal proteins (RP). A key player in regulating cell growth is the …

Resilient Traits Of Children Raised By A Parent With Borderline Personality Disorder, Meghan Andrea Albrecht Aug 2009

Resilient Traits Of Children Raised By A Parent With Borderline Personality Disorder, Meghan Andrea Albrecht

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Much of the literature on BPD and children of parents with BPD focuses on the psychopathological tendencies of this population, specifically the high risk these children have of going on to have BPD as well. The purpose of this study is to better understand how children with BPD adapt and are resilient in ways that exclude them from developing BPD. Three memoirs written by daughters of mothers with BPD were selected based on APA criteria met by each mother for BPD and the daughter's ability to articulate and reflect on her experience with her mother from childhood to adulthood. These …

The overarching request made of participants was to "describe [a] case …

A Discontinuous Space : Postmodern Perspectives On Mental Health Discourse, Jennifer Leigh Harrison Aug 2009

A Discontinuous Space : Postmodern Perspectives On Mental Health Discourse, Jennifer Leigh Harrison

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Language in the mental health field is rich with powerful metaphors, hyperbolic phrases, and linguistic symbols of historical, political and social meaning. At a closer look, a dominant discourse rooted deep in the grounds of empirical science is revealed. In this theoretical study, mental health language is deconstructed using Critical Discourse Analysis and other related theories to locate and analyze a dominant discourse, which opens space for a non-dominant discourse. Postmodern theory assumes that power, entangled with and interdependent on powerlessness, is an absolute phenomenon, and that power abuse can be revealed through the study of a discourse itself. The …

Future space exploration must overcome both scientific and non-scientific obstacles. In accordance with the mission statement of the National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA) (described in Chapter I), there were four major aims of these experiments. The first was to develop an exercise countermeasure to prevent muscle atrophy and weakness during simulated microgravity. The second and third aims were to determine the physiological adaptations in the knee extensor muscles and plantar flexor muscles following prolonged unloading in human subjects and to assess the effectiveness of the exercise countermeasure at preventing disuse atrophy. The final aim was to assess the relationship between …

Codependency Among Only Children As Predicted By Parenting Styles Practiced In Family-Of-Origin, Rachel Ellen Carfora Aug 2009

Codependency Among Only Children As Predicted By Parenting Styles Practiced In Family-Of-Origin, Rachel Ellen Carfora

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study sought to explore whether there is a relationship between only children and codependence as predicted by parenting style in family-of-origin. While past literature looks at codependency and perceived parenting styles, none focus specifically upon the experience of only-children who are thought to be more influenced by family-of-origin dynamics. Therefore, this study also intended to explore whether this relationship was significant enough to invite future research and investigation. Two fixed online questionnaires were completed by 51 participants who met inclusion criteria for being older than 21-years-of-age and an only child as defined by not having grown up with any …

Gathering Strengths And Resiliencies Of Low-Income Joint And Custodial Fathers Of Color : A Focus Group Study, Jamil Malik Davis Aug 2009

Gathering Strengths And Resiliencies Of Low-Income Joint And Custodial Fathers Of Color : A Focus Group Study, Jamil Malik Davis

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The low-income father of color has been poorly represented in research studies relating to positive aspects of their involvement as fathers. Researchers have shown that studies that positively reflect the involvement of fathers are often overrepresented by samples of white fathers, while fathers of color are often labeled as absent, non-resident, peripheral, and deadbeat. Current research is beginning to explore the positive qualities of this marginalized group through studies that document the potential for fathers of color to serve as positive role models. This research gathered data from two focus groups (n=9 and n=5) of low-income African American and Hispanic …

Mechanisms Of Primary Axonal Damage In A Viral Model Of Multiple Sclerosis., Jayasri Das Sarma, Lawrence C. Kenyon, Susan T. Hingley, Kenneth S. Shindler Aug 2009

Mechanisms Of Primary Axonal Damage In A Viral Model Of Multiple Sclerosis., Jayasri Das Sarma, Lawrence C. Kenyon, Susan T. Hingley, Kenneth S. Shindler

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory demyelinating disease of the CNS. Recent studies have demonstrated that significant axonal injury also occurs in MS patients and correlates with neurological dysfunction, but it is not known whether this neuronal damage is a primary disease process, or occurs only secondary to demyelination. In the current studies, neurotropic strains of mouse hepatitis virus (MHV) that induce meningitis, encephalitis, and demyelination in the CNS, an animal model of MS, were used to evaluate mechanisms of axonal injury. The pathogenic properties of genetically engineered isogenic spike protein recombinant demyelinating and nondemyelinating strains of MHV were compared. …

Eighty-eight rice (Oryza sativa) cDNAs encoding rice leaf expressed protein kinases (PKs) were fused to a Tandem Affinity Purification tag (TAP-tag) and expressed in transgenic rice plants. The TAP-tagged PKs and interacting proteins were purified from the T1 progeny of the transgenic rice plants and identified by tandem mass spectrometry. Forty-five TAP-tagged PKs were recovered in this study and thirteen of these were found to interact with other rice proteins with a high probability score. In vivo phosphorylated sites were found for three of the PKs. A comparison of the TAP-tagged data from a combined analysis of 129 …

Computational Investigation Of Spin Traps Using Hybrid Solvation Models., Sai Sriharsha Manoj Konda Aug 2009

Computational Investigation Of Spin Traps Using Hybrid Solvation Models., Sai Sriharsha Manoj Konda

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The cyclic nitrone 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO), and the lesser known linear phenyl-N-tert-butylnitrone (PBN) and its phosphorylated analogues have been used as spin traps for the investigation of free radicals in biological systems. Theoretical work on these molecules suggests that there are important differences in their properties between biological systems and isolated molecules in the gas phase, most likely resulting from intra and intermolecular hydrogen bonding. Most dielectric solvation models such as the polarized continuum model and COSMO are incapable of direct determination of solvent-spin trap chemical interactions. To examine this, hybrid models incorporating COSMO for long range effects and discrete solvent …

Novel Strategy For The Synthesis Of Allenes., Mark-Henry Mbahmi Kamga

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Allenes are very important chemical reagents in organic synthesis. Due to their high reactivity, they have been extensively used to carry out a variety of unique and effective chemical transformations including but not limited to ionic and free radical additions and transition metal catalyzed cyclizations. As the chemistry of this group of compounds is explored further and their applications expanded there is a need to develop alternative and cost effective methods for their synthesis. Our approach involves the synthesis of allenes from oxa-bicyclo-alkan-2-ones by methyllithium induced Eschenmoser fragmentation of the bicyclotosylhydrazone derivatives.

Qualitative Models Of Neural Activity And The Carleman Embedding Technique., Azamed Yehuala Gezahagne

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The two variable Fitzhugh Nagumo model behaves qualitatively like the four variable Hodgkin-Huxley space clamped system and is more mathematically tractable than the Hodgkin Huxley model, thus allowing the action potential and other properties of the Hodgkin Huxley system to be more readily be visualized. In this thesis, it is shown that the Carleman Embedding Technique can be applied to both the Fitzhugh Nagumo model and to Van der Pol's model of nonlinear oscillation, which are both finite nonlinear systems of differential equations. The Carleman technique can thus be used to obtain approximate solutions of the Fitzhugh Nagumo model and …
