Urinary Protein Profiles In A Rat Model For Diabetic Complications, Daniela M. Schlatzer, Jean-Eudes Dazard, Rob M. Ewing, Serguei Ilchenko, Mark R. Chance

Faculty Scholarship

Diabetes mellitus is estimated to affect ∼24 million people in the United States and more than 150 million people worldwide. There are numerous end organ complications of diabetes, the onset of which can be delayed by early diagnosis and treatment. Although assays for diabetes are well founded, tests for its complications lack sufficient specificity and sensitivity to adequately guide these treatment options. In our study, we employed a streptozotocin- induced rat model of diabetes to determine changes in urinary protein profiles that occur during the initial response to the attendant hyperglycemia (e.g. the first two months) with the goal of …

Effects Of Peanut Processing On Masticatory Performance During Variable Appetitive States., Fiona Mckiernan, Richard D. Mattes Sep 2009

Effects Of Peanut Processing On Masticatory Performance During Variable Appetitive States., Fiona Mckiernan, Richard D. Mattes

Department of Nutrition Science Faculty Publications

Background. Current evidence indicates that peanut consumption reduces cardiovascular disease risk, while posing little threat to positive energy balance. However, questions have been raised as to whether inter- and intraindividual variability in mastication in response to peanut form and processing properties may influence these health effects, since mastication has the potential to alter the bioaccessibility of nutrients within the nut matrix. Objective. To explore the relationship between peanut form and processing and masticatory function.Subjects/Methods. Thirty nine adults (16 M, 23 F; BMI:  kg/; age:  y) with healthy dentition chewed four different forms of peanuts until they would normally swallow and …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Studies on drug design datasets are continuing to grow. These datasets are usually known as hard modeled, having a large number of features and a small number of samples. The most common problems in the drug design area are of regression type. Committee machines (ensembles) have become popular in machine learning because of their high performance. In this study, dynamics of ensembles on regression related drug design problems are investigated on a big dataset collection. The study tries to determine the most successful ensemble algorithm, the base algorithm-ensemble pair having the best / worst results, the best successful single algorithm, …

Characterization Of Two Outer Membrane Proteins, Flgo And Flgp, That Influence Vibrio Cholerae Motility, Raquel M. Martinez, Madushini N. Dharmasena, Thomas J. Kirn, Ronald K. Taylor Sep 2009

Characterization Of Two Outer Membrane Proteins, Flgo And Flgp, That Influence Vibrio Cholerae Motility, Raquel M. Martinez, Madushini N. Dharmasena, Thomas J. Kirn, Ronald K. Taylor

Dartmouth Scholarship

Vibrio cholerae is highly motile by the action of a single polar flagellum. The loss of motility reduces the infectivity of V. cholerae, demonstrating that motility is an important virulence factor. FlrC is the sigma-54-dependent positive regulator of flagellar genes. Recently, the genes VC2206 (flgP) and VC2207 (flgO) were identified as being regulated by FlrC via a microarray analysis of an flrC mutant (D. C. Morris, F. Peng, J. R. Barker, and K. E. Klose, J. Bacteriol. 190:231-239, 2008). FlgP is reported to be an outer membrane lipoprotein required for motility that functions as a colonization factor. The study reported …

Knowing With Images: Medium And Message*, John Kulvicki Sep 2009

Knowing With Images: Medium And Message*, John Kulvicki

Dartmouth Scholarship

Problems concerning scientists’ uses of representations have received quite a bit of attention recently. The focus has been on how such representations get their contents and on just what those contents are. Less attention has been paid to what makes certain kinds of scientific representations different from one another and thus well suited to this or that epistemic end. This article considers the latter question with particular focus on the distinction between images and graphs on the one hand and descriptions and related representations on the other.

To Whom Do We Refer When We Speak Of Obligations To "Future Generations"? Reproductive Rights And The Intergenerational Community, Sherry F. Colb Sep 2009

To Whom Do We Refer When We Speak Of Obligations To "Future Generations"? Reproductive Rights And The Intergenerational Community, Sherry F. Colb

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

This Article argues that an analysis of reproductive rights in the context of future generations yields three insights. First, potential people (who may or may not come into being) do not-by any prevailing approach to morality-have a right to be created by us. They may therefore be ethically "prevented" from coming into existence with what I call the "Offspring Selection Interest" ("OSI"). Second, the OSI is often conflated with the distinct reproductive rights interest in protecting one's body against unwanted intrusion, the "Bodily Integrity Interest" ("BII"), with resulting confusion for reproductive rights discourse. And third, once we distinguish the OSI …

Repeat Pregnancies During Adolescence : Factors That Influence Teens' Decisions To Have More Than One Child, Kimberly J. Therrien Sep 2009

Repeat Pregnancies During Adolescence : Factors That Influence Teens' Decisions To Have More Than One Child, Kimberly J. Therrien

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This exploratory qualitative study was undertaken to try to learn and better understand why an adolescent would chose to have more than one child while still an adolescent herself. As the trends in current literature tend to focus on four primary areas of interest; I structured my questions in order to gain information in the same categories. Those categories include: 1) reasons adolescents become pregnant the first time including repeat pregnancies and contraceptive use, 2) intervention strategies and programs aimed to prevent repeat pregnancies, 3) the larger societal impact of adolescent pregnancy, and 4) adolescent brain development and decision making …

A "New" Dynamic In The Western Hemisphere Security Environment: The Mexican Zetas And Other Private Armies, Max G. Manwaring Dr. Sep 2009

A "New" Dynamic In The Western Hemisphere Security Environment: The Mexican Zetas And Other Private Armies, Max G. Manwaring Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

This monograph is intended to help political, military, policy, opinion, and academic leaders think strategically about explanations, consequences, and responses that might apply to the volatile and dangerous new dynamic that has inserted itself into the already crowded Mexican and hemispheric security arena, that is, the privatized Zeta military organization. In Mexico, this new dynamic involves the migration of traditional hard-power national security and sovereignty threats from traditional state and nonstate adversaries to hard and soft power threats from professional private nonstate military organizations. This dynamic also involves a more powerful and ambiguous mix of terrorism, crime, and conventional war …

Russian Elite Image Of Iran: From The Late Soviet Era To The Present, Dmitry Shlapentokh Dr. Sep 2009

Russian Elite Image Of Iran: From The Late Soviet Era To The Present, Dmitry Shlapentokh Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Since the late Soviet era, the presence of Iran has loomed large in the minds of the Russian elite. Soon after the end of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR)—and even before—increasing numbers of Russian intellectuals became disenchanted with the West, especially the United States, and looked for alternative geopolitical alliances. The Muslim world became one of the possible alternatives. Iran became especially important in the geopolitical construction of Eurasianists or neo-Eurasianists who believed that Russia’s alliance with Iran is essential for Russia’s rise to power. Yet, by the middle of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s tenure, increasing tension with …

Escalation And Intrawar Deterrence During Limited Wars In The Middle East, W. Andrew Terrill Dr. Sep 2009

Escalation And Intrawar Deterrence During Limited Wars In The Middle East, W. Andrew Terrill Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

A central purpose of this monograph is to reexamine two earlier conflicts for insights that may be relevant for ongoing dangers during limited wars involving nations possessing chemical or biological weapons or emerging nuclear arsenals. These conflicts are the 1973 Arab-Israeli War and the 1991 Gulf War. Both of these wars were fought at the conventional level, although the prospect of Israel using nuclear weapons (1973), Egypt using biological weapons (1973), or Iraq using chemical and biological weapons (1991) were of serious concern at various points during the fighting. This monograph will consider why efforts at escalation control and intrawar …

Taking Development Seriously: Critique Of The 2008 Jme Special Issue On Moral Functioning, John C. Gibbs, David Moshman, Marvin W. Berkowitz, Karen S. Basinger, Rebecca L. Grime

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

This essay comments on articles that composed a Journal of Moral Education Special Issue (September, 2008, 37[3]). The issue was intended to honor the 50th anniversary of Lawrence Kohlberg’s doctoral dissertation and his subsequent impact on the field of moral development and education. The articles were characterized by the issue editor (Don Collins Reed) as providing a “look forward” from Kohlberg’s work toward a more comprehensive or integrated model of moral functioning. Prominent were culturally pluralist and biologically based themes, such as cultural learning; expert skill; culturally shaped and neurobiologically based predispositions or intuitions; and moral self-relevance or centrality. Inadequately …

Adipokines And Etiopathology Of Metabolic Disorders, Laila M. Al-Dokhi Sep 2009

Adipokines And Etiopathology Of Metabolic Disorders, Laila M. Al-Dokhi

Saudi Medical Journal

White adipose tissue is an endocrine organ producing numerous proteins known as adipokines, which include leptin, adiponectin, resistin, visfatin, and other factors, which are involved in most metabolic disorders. In obesity, plasma leptin concentrations are high due to leptin resistance that may result from the attenuation of leptin signaling in the hypothalamus. Leptin acts to inhibit appetite, stimulate thermogenesis, enhance fatty acid oxidation, decrease glucose, and reduce body weight, and fat. A reduced adiponectin level has been associated with insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and atherosclerosis, and its low level is a predictor of later development of type 2 diabetes. Resistin expression …

Investigation Of Endocannabinoid Modulation Of Conditioned Responding Evoked By A Nicotine Cs And The Pavlovian Stimulus Effects Of Cp 55,940 In Adult Male Rats, Jennifer E. Murray, Nicole R. Wells, George D. Lyford, Rick A. Bevins Sep 2009

Bevins

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Rationale — The cannabinoid CB1 receptor antagonist/inverse agonist rimonabant (SR 141716) has been shown to block reinforcing and rewarding effects of nicotine. Research has not investigated whether the cannabinoid system is involved in the interoceptive stimulus effects of nicotine functioning as a conditional stimulus (CS).
Objective — We examined the effects of rimonabant and the CB1/2 receptor agonist, CP 55,940, on responding evoked by a nicotine CS in rats. Additionally, we determined whether CP 55,940 functioned as a CS or a Pavlovian positive drug feature
Materials and methods — Pavlovian discrimination training involved intermixed nicotine (0.2 mg base/kg) and …

Sibship Reconstruction Demonstrates The Extremely Low Effective Population Size Of Striped Bass Morone Saxatilis In The Santee-Cooper System, South Carolina, Usa, Jin-Xian Liu, Bert Ely

Faculty Publications

For organisms with great fecundity and high mortality in early life stages, such as shellfish or fishes, the need to match reproductive activity with environmental conditions conducive to spawning, fertilization, larval development and recruitment may result in extreme variance in reproductive success among individuals. The main objective of this study was to investigate evidence of large variance in the reproductive success of the striped bass Morone saxatilis in the Santee-Cooper system, South Carolina, USA. Seven microsatellite loci were analysed in 603 recruits representing three yearly cohorts from 1992 to 1994, and a group analysis was performed to identify full-sib families. …

Accelerating Sequence Searching: Dimensionality Reduction Method, Guojie Song, Bin Cui, Baihua Zheng, Kunqing Xie, Dongqing Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Similarity search over long sequence dataset becomes increasingly popular in many emerging applications, such as text retrieval, genetic sequences exploring, etc. In this paper, a novel index structure, namely Sequence Embedding Multiset tree (SEM − tree), has been proposed to speed up the searching process over long sequences. The SEM-tree is a multi-level structure where each level represents the sequence data with different compression level of multiset, and the length of multiset increases towards the leaf level which contains original sequences. The multisets, obtained using sequence embedding algorithms, have the desirable property that they do not need to keep the …

Experimental And Theoretical Investigation Of Molecular Field Effects By Polarization-Resolved Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering, Stephane Carniato, Renaud Guillemin, Wayne C. Stolte, Loic Journel, Richard Taieb, Dennis W. Lindle, Marc Simon Sep 2009

Experimental And Theoretical Investigation Of Molecular Field Effects By Polarization-Resolved Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering, Stephane Carniato, Renaud Guillemin, Wayne C. Stolte, Loic Journel, Richard Taieb, Dennis W. Lindle, Marc Simon

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

We present a combined theoretical and experimental study of molecular field effects on molecular core levels. Polarization-dependent resonant inelastic x-ray scattering is observed experimentally after resonant K-shell excitation of CF3Cl and HCl. We explain the linear dichroism observed in spin-orbit level intensities as due to molecular field effects, including singlet-triplet exchange, and interpret this behavior in terms of population differences in the 2px,y,z inner-shell orbitals. We investigate theoretically the different factors that can affect the electronic populations and the dynamical R dependence of the spin-orbit ratio. Finally, the results obtained are used to interpret the L-shell …

Evaluation Of Cay-1, An Experimental, Natural Fungicide, For Control Of Strawberry Pathogens, Kenneth J. Curry, Maritza Abril, Anthony J. Delucca, Stephen M. Boue, Barbara J. Smith, David E. Wedge

Faculty Publications

CAY-1 is an experimental, natural product being tested as a potential fungicide. This saponin isolated from Capsicum frutescens interacts with membrane sterols causing leakage of cell components and ultimately cell death in a variety of fungi. CAY-1 and the commercial fungicide captan were tested in an in vitro doseresponse dilution-broth assay. They caused at least 85% growth inhibition of the fungal pathogens Colletotrichum acutatum, C fragariae and C. gloeosporioides when tested at 3.0 μM. Even though CAY-1 strongly reduced the growth of these fungal pathogens in laboratory assays and prevented anthracnose development in detached leaf assays, it did not …

Low-Dose Arsenic Compromises The Immune Response To Influenza A Infection In Vivo, Courtney D. Kozul, Kenneth H. Ely, Richard I. Enelow, Joshua W. Hamilton Sep 2009

Low-Dose Arsenic Compromises The Immune Response To Influenza A Infection In Vivo, Courtney D. Kozul, Kenneth H. Ely, Richard I. Enelow, Joshua W. Hamilton

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background:

Arsenic exposure is a significant worldwide environmental health concern. We recently reported that 5-week exposure to environmentally relevant levels (10 and 100 ppb) of As in drinking water significantly altered components of the innate immune response in mouse lung, which we hypothesize is an important contributor to the increased risk of lung disease in exposed human populations.

Objectives:

We investigated the effects of As exposure on respiratory influenza A (H1N1) virus infection, a common and potentially fatal disease.

Methods:

In this study, we exposed C57BL/6J mice to 100 ppb As in drinking water for 5 weeks, followed by intranasal …
