Detecting Proteins In Highly Autofluorescent Cells Using Quantum Dot Antibody Conjugates, Karen M. Orcutt, Shanshan Ren, Kjell Gundersen Sep 2009

Detecting Proteins In Highly Autofluorescent Cells Using Quantum Dot Antibody Conjugates, Karen M. Orcutt, Shanshan Ren, Kjell Gundersen

Faculty Publications

We have applied quantum dot (Qdot) antibody conjugates as a biomolecular probe for cellular proteins important in biogeochemical cycling in the sea. Conventional immunological methods have been hampered by the strong autofluorescence found in cyanobacteria cells. Qdot conjugates provide an ideal alternative for studies that require long-term imaging of cells such as detection of low abundance cellular antigens by fluorescence microscopy. The advantage of Qdot labeled probes over conventional immunological methods is the photostability of the probe. Phycoerythrin bleaches in cyanobacterial cells under prolonged UV or blue light excitation, which means that the semiconducting nanocrystal probe, the Qdot, can yield …

Energy Budgets Of Eared Grebes On The Great Salt Lake And Implications For Harvest Of Brine Shrimp, Michael R. Conover, Joe N. Caudell

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

About 1.5-million eared grebes (Podiceps nigricollis), representing half of the North American population, stage on Utah's Great Salt Lake, USA (GSL) during autumn migration to forage on brine shrimp (Artemia franciscana). Indirectly competing with birds for brine shrimp are commercial harvesters who annually collect >1 million kg (dry wt) of shrimp cysts (i.e., hardened eggs), an amount that during some years equals up to half of all brine shrimp cysts produced annually on the GSL. No information was available regarding what impact this commercial harvest was having on eared grebes. We determined daily energy requirements of eared grebes so that …

The Tipping Point: Biological Terrorism, Scott Cary

Journal of Strategic Security

This article presents a strategic, operational, and tactical analysis of information currently available on the state of bio-weapons development by non-state actors, primarily Islamist jihadists. It discusses the evidence supporting a practical assessment that non-state actors have begun to acquire, and in the near-term intend to employ, bio-weapons. A pathogen and method of attack specifically designed to achieve the strategic goals of jihadists are presented as functional examples of the problem of the emerging global bio-weapons threat. Is a terrorist attack utilizing biological weapons a real threat? If so, is there a way to predict the circumstances under which it might …

Effects Of Temperature And Uv Light On Degradation Of Α-Tocopherol In Free And Dissolved Form, Cristina M. Sabliov, C. Fronczek, C. E. Astete, M. Khachaturyan, L. Khachatryan, C. Leonardi Sep 2009

Effects Of Temperature And Uv Light On Degradation Of Α-Tocopherol In Free And Dissolved Form, Cristina M. Sabliov, C. Fronczek, C. E. Astete, M. Khachaturyan, L. Khachatryan, C. Leonardi

Faculty Publications

The effects of heat and UV exposure on the degradation of free α-tocopherol (oil form), α-tocopherol dissolved in methanol, and α-tocopherol dissolved in hexane were measured. Results showed that degradation of free α-tocopherol due to heat followed first order kinetics, with the samples held at 180 °C showing the greatest degradation rate. Free α-tocopherol degraded faster at high temperatures than dissolved α-tocopherol. In contrast, free α-tocopherol did not degrade when exposed to UV light for as long as 6 h, but the hexane and methanol samples degraded significantly as a matter of time. The α-tocopherol dissolved in hexane and methanol …

Chemical-Free Iron Removal And Disinfection Unit Of Drinking Water For Single House Application, Michael O'Hehir Sep 2009

Chemical-Free Iron Removal And Disinfection Unit Of Drinking Water For Single House Application, Michael O'Hehir

Masters

The supply of safe drinking water is a major worldwide problem. In the developed world the frequency of water related problems are increasing The shortage of fresh water supply is as a result of pollution from industrial, agricultural and natural disasters. To make water suitable for human consumption, it must first be treated. However, consumers do not always receive potable water even after public treatment. In some cases the consumer must treat the water being supplied to them, or have to source their own water from private wells and treat it prior to use. The purpose of this research was …

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

The cytotoxicity of organometallic compounds iron(III)-, cobalt(III)-, manganese(II)-, and copper(II)-salophene (-SP) on platinum-resistant ovarian cancer cell lines was compared. Fe-SP displayed selective cytotoxicity (IC(50) at ~1 muM) against SKOV-3 and OVCAR-3 cell lines while Co-SP caused cytotoxic effects only at higher concentrations (IC(50) at 60 muM) and Cu-SP effects were negligible. High cytotoxicity of Mn-SP (30-60 muM) appeared to be nonspecific because the Mn-chloride salt reduced cell viability similarly. The effect of Fe-SP at 1 muM proved to be ovarian cancer cell selective when compared to a panel of cell lines derived from different tumors. The first irreversible step in …

Genetics And Pathogenesis Of Feline Infectious Peritonitis Virus, Meredith Brown, Jennifer L. Troyer, Jill Pecon-Slattery, M. Roelke-Parker, Stephen J. O'Brien Sep 2009

Genetics And Pathogenesis Of Feline Infectious Peritonitis Virus, Meredith Brown, Jennifer L. Troyer, Jill Pecon-Slattery, M. Roelke-Parker, Stephen J. O'Brien

Biology Faculty Articles

Feline coronavirus (FCoV) is endemic in feral cat populations and cat colonies, frequently preceding outbreaks of fatal feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). FCoV exhibits 2 biotypes: the pathogenic disease and a benign infection with feline enteric coronavirus (FECV). Uncertainty remains regarding whether genetically distinctive avirulent and virulent forms coexist or whether an avirulent form mutates in vivo, causing FIP. To resolve these alternative hypotheses, we isolated viral sequences from FCoV-infected clinically healthy and sick cats (8 FIP cases and 48 FECV-asymptomatic animals); 735 sequences from 4 gene segments were generated and subjected to phylogenetic analyses. Viral sequences from healthy cats were …

Emotional Behavior In Subclinical Psychopathy, Kristen Lee Godenick Sep 2009

Emotional Behavior In Subclinical Psychopathy, Kristen Lee Godenick

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The unique interpersonal qualities of individuals who fall on the so-called ‘psychopathic spectrum’ have been regularly documented since Cleckley’s observations (1941). The literature reflects the importance of understanding individuals who have high and low levels of psychopathic personality traits for research (Lilienfeld, 1998, Patrick, Edens, Poythress, Lilienfeld & Benning, 2006), clinical (Patrick, Hicks, Blonigen & Krueger, 2003) and risk assessment purposes (Skeem, Poythress, Edens, Lilienfeld & Cade, 2003) through bringing forth the position that psychopathic traits can fall on a continuum (Benning, Patrick, Salekin & Leistico, 2005). The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between psychopathic personality …

Impact Of Ambient Air Pollution On Survival Of Renal Transplant Recipients, Rhonda Kristine Hwang Sep 2009

Impact Of Ambient Air Pollution On Survival Of Renal Transplant Recipients, Rhonda Kristine Hwang

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

There is increasing evidence that ambient air pollution is associated with coronary heart disease morbidity and mortality. This research has focused on the general public and less so on possible sensitive subgroups even though these may have even greater susceptibility to adverse effects of ambient air pollution. With highly prevalent traditional as well as nontraditional risk factors, renal transplant recipients may potentially be a sensitive subgroup. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possible effect of between long-term exposure to air pollution on the risk of CHD mortality among renal transplant recipients. This cohort study includes 32,239 adult, …

Effects Of Functional Appliances On The Tmj And Mandibular Length Of Skeletal Class Ii Patients: A Cone Beam Computed Tomography Study, David C. Lee

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Introduction: Functional appliances have been efficiently used in the treatment of Class II malocclusions caused by retrognathic mandibles. Cone beam computed tomography has enabled us to make more accurate linear measurements by eliminating superimposition of other structures and to analyze skeletal anatomic detail in all three planes of space. This retrospective study evaluated the osseous changes in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and length of the mandible in skeletal Class II malocclusion patients treated with the fixed functional appliances and compared measurements with Class I malocclusion patients treated with orthodontic mechanics that did not alter skeletal relationships.

Materials and Methods: Twelve …

The Effects Of The Introduction Of An Electronic Medical Record (Emr) On Self-Reported Treatment Effects In A Psychological Service In A Family Medicine Clinic, Michael D. Herman Sep 2009

The Effects Of The Introduction Of An Electronic Medical Record (Emr) On Self-Reported Treatment Effects In A Psychological Service In A Family Medicine Clinic, Michael D. Herman

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The healthcare system in the United States has traditionally focused on pathogenic disease prevention and treatment of acute illness, only addressing physical health (Grzywacz & Keyes, 2004). This approach is limited, as it does not often acknowledge the influence of mental health and health promotion on outcomes. Approximately, 25-75% of all presenting cases with uncertain etiology in medicine are psychosocial or behavioral in origin (Schulte et. al., 2004). Improvements can be made through integrated care; however, divergent viewpoints and often proximity across providers disrupts, psychologist-physician communication, collaboration, and subsequently care access (McDaniel, 1995). The current study examines the self reported …

Study Of The Four Factor Theory Of Women’S Sexual Function, Julie M. Merrell Sep 2009

Study Of The Four Factor Theory Of Women’S Sexual Function, Julie M. Merrell

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Tiefer, Hall, and Tavris (2002) described factors comprising four categories of female sexual function. They suggested that unique factors need to be examined to understand sexual function in women. Socio-cultural, political, or economic factors, partner and relationship factors, psychological factors, and medical factors were described as aspects of women’s lives that can be the source of sexual dysfunction. In a previous study, Merrell (2007) utilized Tiefer et al’s (2002) four factor model of sexual functioning to examine female sexual functioning looking specifically at body shame, relationship satisfaction, positive and negative affect, sexual self-schema, and overall health. Based on the results …

Fear Or Rage?: Assessing Public Opinion And Policy Responses To Terrorist Attacks, Gabriel Rubin Sep 2009

Fear Or Rage?: Assessing Public Opinion And Policy Responses To Terrorist Attacks, Gabriel Rubin

Department of Justice Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Mass fear has been posited as the main emotional outcome of terror attacks. Indeed, the term “terrorism” itself emphasizes that such attacks are meant to stoke fear. Yet, a critical piece of the post-terror attack dynamic has been largely ignored: the public rage that comes in response to terror attacks. Witness the call for politicians to step down after the November 2008 attacks in Mumbai or the placard reading “Nuke ‘Em Till They Glow” at the 2001 World Series. It is the contention of this paper that, after a major terror attack has occurred, the public is more angry than …

Increased Expression Of Mad2 Occurs In Association With Dnmt1 Protein Stabilization And Aberrant Cpg Island Promoter Hypermethylation During Carcinogenesis In Immortalized Bronchial Epithelial Cells, Paul Romo

Undergraduate Medical Student Research

Physicians and scientists must join together and research the specific effects of environmental carcinogens in relation to cancer. A great model to study environmental carcinogenesis is carcinogen-induced lung cancer. We know that 30% of cancer deaths are accredited to lung cancer and that cigarette smoking is the number one cause of lung cancer, other forms of cancer, and cancer deaths worldwide (1). Second hand smoke is also a very serious health concern. Second hand smoke has been chosen as a cancer-causing agent by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the National Toxicology Program and the International Agency for Research on Cancer …

Communication Dimensions Of Supervisor-Subordinate Conflict: Perceptions By Subordinates Of Sex/Gender Differences In Supervisors’ Conflict Strategies, Maria Del Pilar Montoya Sep 2009

Communication Dimensions Of Supervisor-Subordinate Conflict: Perceptions By Subordinates Of Sex/Gender Differences In Supervisors’ Conflict Strategies, Maria Del Pilar Montoya

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

My personal interest about conflict in the workplace and its relation with sex/gender started early in my first years as a communication practitioner, and later became a topic for my academic research. After I did not find satisfactory answers among the popular beliefs and perceptions to the inquiries about conflict in the workplace, I turned my search to what the social sciences have investigated. I have to recognize that at the beginning my internal explanations about the reasons why conflict with supervisors happened were biased on traumatic conflict experiences with female supervisors as a participant and an observer, in which …

47-Channel Burst-Mode Recording Hydrophone System Enabling Measurements Of The Dynamic Echolocation Behavior Of Free-Swimming Dolphins, Josefin Starkhammar, Mats Amundin, Johan Nilsson, Stan A. Kuczaj, Monica Almqvist, Hans W. Persson Sep 2009

47-Channel Burst-Mode Recording Hydrophone System Enabling Measurements Of The Dynamic Echolocation Behavior Of Free-Swimming Dolphins, Josefin Starkhammar, Mats Amundin, Johan Nilsson, Stan A. Kuczaj, Monica Almqvist, Hans W. Persson

Faculty Publications

Detailed echolocation behavior studies on free-swimming dolphins require a measurement system that incorporates multiple hydrophones (often > 16). However, the high data flow rate of previous systems has limited their usefulness since only minute long recordings have been manageable. To address this problem, this report describes a 47-channel burst-mode recording hydrophone system that enables highly resolved full beamwidth measurements on multiple free-swimming dolphins during prolonged recording periods. The system facilitates a wide range of biosonar studies since it eliminates the need to restrict the movement of animals in order to study the fine details of their sonar beams. The Not So New Turkish Woman: A Statistical Look At Women In Two Istanbul Neighborhoods, Mary-Lou O’Neill, Fazil Guler Sep 2009

The Not So New Turkish Woman: A Statistical Look At Women In Two Istanbul Neighborhoods, Mary-Lou O’Neill, Fazil Guler

Journal of International Women's Studies

Using survey data gathered from nearly 400 women living in two Istanbul neighborhoods, this article explores issues of work, education, family and feminism. In addition to presenting the findings we argue that there is a continued gap between the ideal of the Republican woman and the actual practices of this group of Turkish women. The picture of these Turkish women that emerged from this survey is that of women still largely in the grips of an ideal born in the early days of the Turkish Republic. However, it also became clear that there also exist rifts between belief and practice …

To What Extent Was The Relationship Between Feminists And The Eugenics Movement A ‘Marriage Of Convenience’ In The Interwar Years?, Clare Makepeace

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article extends and questions historians’ recent inquiry into feminists’ relationship with the eugenics movement. It compares the work of three leading feminists – Eleanor Rathbone, Eva Hubback and Mary Stocks – with that of the Eugenics Society by focusing on the interwar campaigns of family allowances, birth control and voluntary sterilisation. Drawing upon National Union of Societies for Equal Citizenship annual reports, personal correspondence and published articles, it challenges historians’ assumptions that Rathbone and Stocks courted eugenic support; instead it exposes the pragmatism of an ailing eugenics movement. However, by demonstrating Hubback’s ardent eugenic commitment, it also provides new …
