N-Glycosylation Status Of E-Cadherin Controls Cytoskeletal Dynamics Through The Organization Of Distinct Β-Catenin- And Γ-Catenin-Containing Ajs., Basem T Jamal, Mihai Nita-Lazar, Zhennan Gao, Bakr Amin, Janice Walker, Maria A Kukuruzinska

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

N-glycosylation of E-cadherin has been shown to inhibit cell-cell adhesion. Specifically, our recent studies have provided evidence that the reduction of E-cadherin N-glycosylation promoted the recruitment of stabilizing components, vinculin and serine/threonine protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A), to adherens junctions (AJs) and enhanced the association of AJs with the actin cytoskeleton. Here, we examined the details of how N-glycosylation of E-cadherin affected the molecular organization of AJs and their cytoskeletal interactions. Using the hypoglycosylated E-cadherin variant, V13, we show that V13/β-catenin complexes preferentially interacted with PP2A and with the microtubule motor protein dynein. This correlated with dephosphorylation of the microtubule-associated protein …

Of Facebook, Twitter And Social Networking Sites, Mark Y. Herring

Dacus Library Faculty Publications

For those who have read even one of my musings, it will come as no surprise that I find Facebook, Twitter, social networking sites (SNS), and the rest of Webology less than inspiring. If you had read nothing other than the screed I blathered about Google a few columns back, you’d know that I find all this talk about the Web replacing libraries more than a little silly; I find it downright idiotic. Still, one must keep an open mind.

Orbital Aspergillus Infection Mimicking A Tumour: A Case Report, Muhammad Ahsan Zafar, Syeda Sidra Waheed, Ather Enam

Section of Neurosurgery

A 14-year-old male presented to the neurosurgical clinic with swelling just above the right eye which had been growing slowly for the last eight years. The swelling first appeared following a non-penetrating trauma eight years ago. On examination it was a non-tender, non-erythematous, firm, round swelling causing marked proptosis and diplopia on downward gaze only. The visual acuity was intact. MRI showed an intraorbital, extraconal mass isointense on T1 and hypointense on T2 imaging. A diagnosis of orbital tumor was made. A white, friable mass consistent with meningioma was resected. However histopathology report later showed it to be an Aspergilloma. …

Identification And Comparison Of Gray Literature In Two Polar Libraries: Australian Antarctic Division And Scott Polar Research Institute, Daria O. Carle Sep 2009

Identification And Comparison Of Gray Literature In Two Polar Libraries: Australian Antarctic Division And Scott Polar Research Institute, Daria O. Carle

Reports

Gray literature collections were investigated and compared at the libraries of the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) and the Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI) in order to improve accessibility. These collections are important to Arctic and Antarctic researchers, but are problematic because they are not well documented, often have limited access, and are arranged by subject using a classification system specific to polar libraries. Tangible results of the project include estimates of the number of gray literature items in the polar subject categories for the two libraries, along with a template of a user’s finding aid to these collections. In addition, …

The Continuity Of Protein Structure Space Is An Intrinsic Property Of Proteins, Jeffrey Skolnick, Adrian K. Arakaki, Yup Lee Seung, Michal Brylinski Sep 2009

The Continuity Of Protein Structure Space Is An Intrinsic Property Of Proteins, Jeffrey Skolnick, Adrian K. Arakaki, Yup Lee Seung, Michal Brylinski

Faculty Publications

The classical view of the space of protein structures is that it is populated by a discrete set of protein folds. For proteins up to 200 residues long, by using structural alignments and building upon ideas of the completeness and continuity of structure space, we show that nearly any structure is significantly related to any other using a transitive set of no more than 7 intermediate structurally related proteins. This result holds for all structures in the Protein Data Bank, even when structural relationships between evolutionary related proteins (as detected by threading or functional analyses) are excluded. A similar picture …

Identification Of An Antisense Transcript To Zim2 In The Primate Lineage, Jennifer M. Huang, Sungryul Yu, Joomyeong Kim Sep 2009

Identification Of An Antisense Transcript To Zim2 In The Primate Lineage, Jennifer M. Huang, Sungryul Yu, Joomyeong Kim

Faculty Publications

In this study, we identified an antisense transcript to ZIM2 (zinc finger imprinted gene 2) in the human, called ZIM2as. Sequence analysis of the 110 kb region spanned by this transcript revealed a cluster of tandemly repeated sequence in the human, orangutan, and chimpanzee as well as a loss of approximately 70 kb from the corresponding region in the rhesus. The homologous region in most mammals contains a cluster of olfactory receptor (OLFR) genes, but this gene cluster has been lost from the primate lineage. Expression analyses confirmed that ZIM2as is expressed in the human brain and testis. Two CpG …

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a disabling condition of the hip that, depending on geography, can afflict between 20-80% of patients with end-stage arthritis of the hip. Despite its prevalence, the etiology of this disease remains unknown. DDH is a complex disorder with both environmental and genetic causes.. Based on the literature, the candidate genes for the disease are HOXB9, collagen type I α1, and DLX 3. The purpose of our study was to map and characterize the gene or genes responsible for this disorder by family linkage analysis. We recruited one 18-member, multigeneration affected family to provide …

Optimizing Taq Polymerase Concentration For Improved Signal-To-Noise In The Broad Range Detection Of Low Abundance Bacteria, Rudolph Spangler, Noel L. Goddard, David S. Thaler

Publications and Research

Background PCR in principle can detect a single target molecule in a reaction mixture. Contaminating bacterial DNA in reagents creates a practical limit on the use of PCR to detect dilute bacterial DNA in environmental or public health samples. The most pernicious source of contamination is microbial DNA in DNA polymerase preparations. Importantly, all commercial Taq polymerase preparations inevitably contain contaminating microbial DNA. Removal of DNA from an enzyme preparation is problematical. Methodology/Principal Findings This report demonstrates that the background of contaminating DNA detected by quantitative PCR with broad host range primers can be decreased greater than 10-fold through the …

Therapeutic Strategies Aimed To Facilitate Axonal Regeneration And Functional Recovery Following Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury, Woon Chow Sep 2009

Therapeutic Strategies Aimed To Facilitate Axonal Regeneration And Functional Recovery Following Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury, Woon Chow

Theses and Dissertations

Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) is a physically debilitating, emotionally devastating, financially costly, and life-changing condition that afflicts more than 1,000,000 people in the United States alone. Owing to the characteristic neuropathology and low regenerative capacity of the central nervous system, many victims of SCI are left permanently paralyzed. Though the tissue damage caused by the initial insult almost certainly cannot be reversed, intensive research in recent years to elucidate the cellular and molecular events that follows has provided new grounds for optimism. Accordingly, in this dissertation, we present a number of potential treatment strategies aimed to address some of …

Water Is The Foundation Of Life...-Betsy Damon, University Of Dayton

Blog Archive: River Reflections at the University of Dayton

Eco-artist Betsy Damon is on campus this week. She will be coming to the River Stewards mini-course on Friday to talk to the Stews about her work. Betsy seems to share a similar mindset that the Rivers Institute possesses. Betsy has said, "I believe that a group of committed people can address any challenge concerning water, and solve the difficulties in ways that respect the dynamic Universe and every individual. The key to our success is relationships!"
