Impact Of Dietary Arginine On Immunity In Broiler Chicks, Jennifer Lynn D'Amato Oct 2009

Impact Of Dietary Arginine On Immunity In Broiler Chicks, Jennifer Lynn D'Amato

Master's Theses

Arginine (ARG) is an immunologic modulator due in part to its role as a substrate for leukocytes. Therefore, the objective of these studies was to evaluate the impact of dietary ARG on ARG utilization in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and thymocytes in broiler chicks as they provide a model that is not confounded by de novo ARG synthesis. Several experiments were performed to measure: 1) ARG transporters as markers of ARG utilization by leukocytes; 2) thymocyte proliferation; 3) PBMC phenotype, and 4) ARG’s impact on the acute phase response (APR). In experiment 1, chicks were fed diets containing 1.20% …

Regression Analysis Of Fracture Toughness For Secondary Osteons Located In Human Cortical Bone, Chase A. Fetzer Oct 2009

Regression Analysis Of Fracture Toughness For Secondary Osteons Located In Human Cortical Bone, Chase A. Fetzer

Master's Theses

An experiment was carried out in order to locate and quantify osteon types within a sample of cortical bone taken from a human tibia. This was done using a microscope-camera assembly and the BioQuant computer software. The results of this were correlated with a previous experiment’s results on fracture toughness so that an analysis could be run on the data in order to determine the factors that most affect the value of fracture toughness of this cortical bone. Results were examined closely and the analysis repeated until the author was satisfied that the best possible model for fracture toughness had …

Phenotopic Plasticity Of Leaf Shape Along A Temperature Gradient In Acer Rubrum, Dana L. Royer, Laura A. Meyerson, Kevin M. Robertson, Jonathan M. Adams

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Both phenotypic plasticity and genetic determination can be important for understanding how plants respond to environmental change. However, little is known about the plastic response of leaf teeth and leaf dissection to temperature. This gap is critical because these leaf traits are commonly used to reconstruct paleoclimate from fossils, and such studies tacitly assume that traits measured from fossils reflect the environment at the time of their deposition, even during periods of rapid climate change. We measured leaf size and shape in Acer rubrum derived from four seed sources with a broad temperature range and grown for two years in …

Selective Filtration In The Tropical Marine Sponge Rhopaloeides Odorabile: Impacts Of Elevated Seawater Temperature On Feeding Behavior, Andrew Massaro

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Climate change currently represents the most significant and increasing threat to coral reef ecosystems worldwide as sea surface temperatures are predicted to increase by up to 4oC by the year 2099. Sponges that rely on strong microbial symbioses are particularly sensitive to elevations in seawater temperature. In this study, the impacts of elevated seawater temperature on feeding behavior in the tropical marine sponge Rhopaloeides odorabile were assessed. Sponges were exposed to temperatures ranging between 27 and 32oC. At four time points, filtration rate and volume flow rate of each sponge were measured, and feeding efficiencies on both heterotrophic and phototrophic …

Prevalence And Intensity Of Trypanosome Infections In Stable And Declining Populations Of Brush-Tailed Bettongs (Bettongia Penicillata), Melissa Chiasson

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The brush-tailed bettong (Bettongia penicillata), or woylie, is an endemic Australian marsupial that has recently suffered a large population crash in the Upper Warren region of Western Australia. Research has shown that both the declining Upper Warren population of brush-tailed bettongs and a stable population at Karakamia Wildlife Sanctuary are infected with a novel Trypanosoma sp., and the declining Upper Warren population was found to have a higher prevalence of trypanosome infection that that of the stable Karakamia population. In this study, further work was done to see if 1) the prevalence and intensity of trypanosome infection still differed significantly …

Sensing Learner Interest Through Eye Tracking, Haolin Wei, Arthir-Nicolae Moldovan, Cristina Muntean

9th. IT & T Conference

Due to the rapidly growing of the amount of information, a stronger need emerges for efficient and flexible strategies for personalisation of the educational content. E-learning systems are very helpful for learners, however, people differ in knowledge level, learning styles and may seek for different information when they access web based e-learning systems. Therefore, content adapted to the user’s needs should be supported by the e-learning systems. In this paper we introduce a new e-learning environment that makes use of eye tracking mechanism to follow learner interest in certain topics and to perform content personalisation. The framework of the e-learning …

Comparison Of Feature Classification Algorithm For Activity Recognition Based On Accelerometer And Heart Rate Data, Dominic Maguire, Richard Frisby

9th. IT & T Conference

This paper describes a project to compare two feature classification algorithms used in activity recognition in relation to accelerometer and heart rate data. Data was collected from six male and female subjects using a single tri-axial accelerometer and heart monitor attached to each subject’s dominant thigh. Subjects carried out eight activities and the data was labelled semi-automatically. Features (mean, standard deviation, energy, correlation and mean heart rate) were extracted from the data using a window of 256 (3.4 seconds) and an overlap of 50%. Two classifers, k-NN and J48, were evaluated for activity recognition with 10-fold validation with k-NN (k …

The Attractors Of Teaching Biology: A Perspective From A Turkish Context, Ahmet Kilinc, Ahmet Mahiroglu Oct 2009

The Attractors Of Teaching Biology: A Perspective From A Turkish Context, Ahmet Kilinc, Ahmet Mahiroglu

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Because the teaching occupation plays a crucial role in a country’s development, policymakers and teacher recruitment units all around the world strive to understand how to attract individuals to this profession. However, research regarding the attractors of teaching has been conducted almost entirely in developed countries and has not focused on particular subject areas to be taught. In addition, only limited lists of attractors have been used. Accordingly, the main purpose of this study was to examine what attractors influence people who choose teaching biology as a career, and what about the Turkish culture has caused people to make this …
