Phytoplankton Blooms: Their Occurrence And Composition Within Virginia's Tidal Tributaries, Harold G. Marshall, Todd A. Egerton

Virginia Journal of Science

Sporadic algal bloom development within a 10 year monitoring program in Virginia tidal tributaries of Chesapeake Bay is reviewed. These blooms were common events, characteristically producing a color signature to the surface water, typically short lived, occurring mainly from spring into autumn throughout different salinity regions of these rivers, and were produced primarily by dinoflagellates. The abundance threshold levels that would identify bloom status from a non-bloom presence were species specific, varied with the taxon's cell size, and ranged from ca. 10 to 104 cells mL-1. Among the most consistent sporadic bloom producers were the dinoflagellates Akashiwo …

Privacy Programs And Protection For Children And Youth: Amend Article 2 Of Chapter 5 Of Title 49, Relating To Child Abuse And Deprivation Records, So As To Define A Certain Term, Provide For Access By Certain Governmental Entities And Certain Persons To Records Concerning Reports Of Child Abuse; Provide That Certain Records Relating To Child Fatality Or Near Fatality Shall Not Be Confidential; Repeal Conflicting Laws; And For Other Purposes., Carla Chen, Russell Wrenn

Georgia State University Law Review

The Act expands the definition of “child abuse” by providing for a definition of “near fatality.” It also changes who may access records of child abuse and deprivation to include any governmental agency and certain other persons as defined by the Act. Additionally, it makes cases of near fatality accessible to these agencies and individuals. In doing so, the Act prohibits personally identifiable information from disclosure in these cases.

Reducing The Impact Of Pcr-Mediated Recombination In Molecular Evolution And Environmental Studies Using A New-Generation High-Fidelity Dna Polymerase, Daniel J.G. Lahr, Laura A. Katz Oct 2009

Reducing The Impact Of Pcr-Mediated Recombination In Molecular Evolution And Environmental Studies Using A New-Generation High-Fidelity Dna Polymerase, Daniel J.G. Lahr, Laura A. Katz

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

PCR-mediated recombination can greatly impact estimates of diversity, both in environmental studies and in analyses of gene family evolution. Here we measure chimera (PCR-mediated recombinant) formation by analyzing a mixture of eight partial actin sequences isolated from the amoeba Arcella hemisphaerica amplified under a variety of conditions that mimic standard laboratory situations. We further compare a new-generation proofreading processivity-enhanced polymerase to both a standard proofreading enzyme and previously published results. Proofreading polymerases are preferred over other polymerases in instances where evolutionary inferences must be made. Our analyses reveal that reducing the initial template concentration is as critical as reducing the …

A Nonlinear Constituent Based Viscoelastic Model For Articular Cartilage And Analysis Of Tissue Remodeling Due To Altered Glycosaminoglycan-Collagen Interactions, Gregory C. Thomas, Anna Asanbaeva, Pasquale Vena, Robert L. Sah, Stephen M. Klisch Oct 2009

A Nonlinear Constituent Based Viscoelastic Model For Articular Cartilage And Analysis Of Tissue Remodeling Due To Altered Glycosaminoglycan-Collagen Interactions, Gregory C. Thomas, Anna Asanbaeva, Pasquale Vena, Robert L. Sah, Stephen M. Klisch

Mechanical Engineering

A constituent based nonlinear viscoelastic (VE) model was modified from a previous study (Vena, et al., 2006, “A Constituent-Based Model for the Nonlinear Viscoelastic Behavior of Ligaments,” J. Biomech. Eng., 128, pp. 449–457) to incorporate a glycosaminoglycan (GAG)-collagen (COL) stress balance using compressible elastic stress constitutive equations specific to articular cartilage (AC). For uniaxial loading of a mixture of quasilinear VE constituents, time constant and relaxation ratio equations are derived to highlight how a mixture of constituents with distinct quasilinear VE properties is one mechanism that produces a nonlinear VE tissue. Uniaxial tension experiments were performed with newborn bovine AC …

Extreme Weathering/Erosion During The Miocene Climatic Optimum: Evidence From Sediment Record In The South China Sea, Shiming Wan, Wolfram M. Kürschner, Peter D. Clift, Anchun Li, Tiegang Li

Faculty Publications

Investigating the interplay between continental weathering and erosion, climate, and atmospheric CO2 concentrations is significant in understanding the mechanisms that force the Cenozoic global cooling and predicting the future climatic and environmental response to increasing temperature and CO2 levels. The Miocene represents an ideal test case as it encompasses two distinct extreme climate periods, the Miocene Climatic Optimum (MCO) with the warmest time since 35 Ma in Earth's history and the transition to the Late Cenozoic icehouse mode with the establishment of the east Antarctic ice sheet. However the precise role of continental weathering during this period of major climate …

Visualization Of Protein 3d Structures In Reduced Representation With Simultaneous Display Of Intra And Inter-Molecular Interactions, Vrunda Sheth Oct 2009

Visualization Of Protein 3d Structures In Reduced Representation With Simultaneous Display Of Intra And Inter-Molecular Interactions, Vrunda Sheth

Theses

Protein structure representation is an important tool in structural biology. There exists different methods of representing the protein 3D structures and different biologists favor different methods based on the information they require. Currently there is no available method of protein 3D structure representation which captures enough chemical information from the protein sequence and clearly shows the intra-molecular and the inter-molecular H-bonds and VDW interactions at the same time. This project aims to reduce the 3D structure of a protein and display the reduced representation along with inter-molecular and the intra-molecular H-bonds and van der Waals interactions. A reduced protein representation …

Is Routine Antenatal Screening For Syphilis In Nigeria Still Justified Clinically And Economically?, Mohammed Bukar, Bala M. Audu, Usman I. Takai, Bamidele B. Ajayi, Abubakar A. Kullima

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To determine the seroprevalence and cost effectiveness of antenatal syphilis screening at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Maiduguri, Nigeria. METHODS: A retrospective chart analysis of venereal disease research laboratory (VDRL) results among pregnant women at the UMTH, Maiduguri, Nigeria, during a 10-year period (from 1st January 1999 to 31st December 2008) was undertaken. RESULTS: A total of 18,712 women registered for antenatal care during the study period. Of these, 18,101 had serological screening for syphilis. Only 12 of the 18,101 screened were seropositive by VDRL, 9 (75%) were confirmed by Treponema pallidum hemagglutination assay (TPHA), giving a …

Just Doing What They Gotta Do: Single Black Custodial Fathers Coping With The Stresses And Reaping The Rewards Of Parenting, Roberta L. Coles Oct 2009

Just Doing What They Gotta Do: Single Black Custodial Fathers Coping With The Stresses And Reaping The Rewards Of Parenting, Roberta L. Coles

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

For single African American custodial fathers, parenting stress is exacerbated by the cultural expectation that Black fathers are "normally" absent and by the clustering of stresses that Black men are more likely to encounter. This sample of African American fathers have used a repertoire of problem-focused and cognitive coping strategies, including some that are frequently considered "culturally specific." Twenty Black single custodial fathers are interviewed and their narratives are analyzed for concepts and thematic categories related to stress and coping. Their narratives indicate that certain strategies are avoided because (a) these strategies are not available to them and (b) they …
