Deep Ecology And End-Of-Life Care, Paul Carrick
Deep Ecology And End-Of-Life Care, Paul Carrick
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Physicians and nurses caring for terminally ill patients are expected to center their moral concerns almost exclusively on the needs and welfare of the dying patient and the patients family. But what about the relationship of traditional medical ethics to the emerging new theories of environmental ethics, like deep ecology? As we glide into the twenty-first century, can anyone seriously doubt that the mounting global concerns of environmental ethics will eventually influence the ethics of medicine too?
For example, suppose physicians were to integrate the core values of an ecocentric environmental ethic like deep ecology into contemporary North American norms …
Nil: The Value Of Patents In A Major Crisis Such As An Influenza Pandemic, Dennis D. Crouch
Nil: The Value Of Patents In A Major Crisis Such As An Influenza Pandemic, Dennis D. Crouch
Faculty Publications
This essay focuses on the role of patents in relation to a potential global crisis such as an influenza pandemic or other public health crisis. I argue that patent rights will be largely ignored during an epidemic and that any post-crisis compensation would likely be low when compared to traditional patent rewards or settlements entered under threat of injunctive relief. In some situations, such as use of a patented invention by a state or local government, a patentee may have no recourse. Part III of the essay raises a separate issue that stems from the relatively long time frame for …

Interpretation Of Single-Beam Acoustic Backscatter Using Lidar-Derived Topographic Complexity And Benthic Habitat Classifications In A Coral Reef Environment, Greg Foster, Brian K. Walker, Bernhard Riegl
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Producing thematic coral reef benthic habitat maps from single-beam acoustic backscatter has been hindered by uncertainties in interpreting the acoustic energy parameters E1 (tail of 1st echo) and E2 (complete 2nd echo), typically limiting such maps to sediment classification schemes. In this study, acoustic interpretation was guided by high-resolution lidar (LIght Detection And Ranging) bathymetry. Each acoustic record, acquired from a BioSonics DT-X echosounder and multiplexed 38 and 418 kHz transducers, was paired with a spatially-coincident value of a lidar-derived proxy for topographic complexity, reef-volume (RV), and its membership to one of eight benthic habitat classes, delineated from lidar imagery, …
Death Ante Ora Parentum In Virgil’S Aeneid, Timothy M. O'Sullivan
Death Ante Ora Parentum In Virgil’S Aeneid, Timothy M. O'Sullivan
Classical Studies Faculty Research
Virgil's Aeneid includes a number of scenes in which children die in front of their parents. While the motif has a Homeric precedent, Virgil's invention of a formula (ante ora parentum: "before the faces of one's parents") suggests a particular interest in the theme. An analysis of scenes where the formula recurs (such as Aeneas's shipwreck, the fall of Troy, and the lusus Troiae) reveals a metapoetic resonance behind the motif, with the parent-child relationship acting as a metaphor for authorial influence and artistic creation. Thus the threat that Aeneas might die as Anchises looks on, for …
Enhancing Ais To Improve Whale-Ship Collision Avoidance And Maritime Security, Philip A. Mcgillivary, Kurt Schwehr, Kevin Fall
Enhancing Ais To Improve Whale-Ship Collision Avoidance And Maritime Security, Philip A. Mcgillivary, Kurt Schwehr, Kevin Fall
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
Whale-ship strikes are of growing worldwide concern due to the steady growth of commercial shipping. Improving the current situation involves the creation of a communication capability allowing whale position information to be estimated and exchanged among vessels and other observation assets. An early example of such a system has been implemented for the shipping lane approaches to the harbor of Boston, Massachusetts where ship traffic transits areas of the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary frequently used by whales. It uses the Automated Identification Systems (AIS) technology, currently required for larger vessels but becoming more common in all classes of vessels. …

Managing South Coast Sandplain Soils To Yield Potential, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Bulletins 4000 -
This book has been written to help farmers reach their rainfall-limited yield potential. It comes from a need to understand the properties and management options for grain production on sandplain soils. It also seeks to address concerns that crop yields on sandplain soils are not increasing at the rate experienced on soils elsewhere in the south coast region of Western Australia.
One Size Does Not Fit All: A Framework For Tailoring Intellectual Property Rights, Michael W. Carroll
One Size Does Not Fit All: A Framework For Tailoring Intellectual Property Rights, Michael W. Carroll
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
The United States and its trading partners have adopted cultural and innovation policies under which the government grants one-size-fits-all patents and copyrights to inventors and authors. On a global basis, the reasons for doing so vary, but in the United States granting intellectual property rights has been justified as the principal means of promoting innovation and cultural progress. Until recently, however, few have questioned the wisdom of using such blunt policy instruments to promote progress in a wide range of industries in which the economics of innovation varies considerably.
Provisionally accepting the assumptions of the traditional economic case for intellectual …

The Production Of Antibody By Invading B Cells Is Required For The Clearance Of Rabies Virus From The Central Nervous System., D Craig Hooper, Timothy W Phares, Marzena J Fabis, Anirban Roy
Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of rabies is associated with the inability to deliver immune effectors across the blood-brain barrier and to clear virulent rabies virus from CNS tissues. However, the mechanisms that facilitate immune effector entry into CNS tissues are induced by infection with attenuated rabies virus.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Infection of normal mice with attenuated rabies virus but not immunization with killed virus can promote the clearance of pathogenic rabies virus from the CNS. T cell activity in B cell-deficient mice can control the replication of attenuated virus in the CNS, but viral mRNA persists. Low levels of passively administered rabies …

“They’Re Supportive, But. . .”: Female Graduate Students And Their Parents’ Reactions To Graduate Education, Rosalie S. Aldrich
Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
In 2001, there were approximately 1.9 million graduate students in American universities, and a majority of them were women. Graduate students are under a considerable amount of stress and strain, and parents can be a source of social support for their children; however, little research has been done regarding graduate students and the support they receive from their parents. The purpose of this study was to explore parents’ reactions to their daughters’ choice to pursue a graduate degree. Data were collected through open-ended interviews with 18 female graduate students. Results indicated that parents’ reactions to their daughter going to graduate …

Observations Of Neck-Collared Canada Geese Near John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York, Thomas W. Seamans, Scott E. Clemons, Allen L. Gosser
Human–Wildlife Interactions
Canada geese (Branta canadensis) often cause significant damage when they strike aircraft. They are responsible for a reported minimum of $2.6 million in damage per year to civil aviation in the United States. Knowledge of goose movements in relation to airports would allow wildlife managers to allocate time and funds to manage those populations that pose the greatest threat to aircraft. We placed alpha-numeric neck collars on 300 Canada geese within 8 km of both John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFKIA) and LaGuardia Airport in New York, New York. We conducted weekly observations for 2 years within a …
Book Review Of Imagining Head-Smashed-In: Aboriginal Buffalo Hunting On The Northern Plains By Jack W. Brink, David Hurst Thomas
Book Review Of Imagining Head-Smashed-In: Aboriginal Buffalo Hunting On The Northern Plains By Jack W. Brink, David Hurst Thomas
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Jack Brink has written an important and engaging book, his personal tribute to the Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump in southern Alberta, Canada. This is an easy-going, almost conversational narrative, but it’s easy to detect the author’s passion and the solid science that lies behind his simple words.
Imagining Head-Smashed-In boasts a remarkably broad and well-crafted table of contents. Brink begins with an overview of Head-Smashed-In, patiently explaining to professional and lay reader alike why this particular archaeological site should command our attention. As an admitted zealot, he doesn’t shy away from occasional hyperbole: “If hunters of the Plains were engaged in …

Tourist Attitudes Toward Elk Management In The Pine Ridge Region Of Northwestern Nebraska, R. Daniel Crank, Scott Hygnstrom, Scott R. Groepper Mr.
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
We interviewed 200 tourists at Fort Robinson State Park and Chadron State Park in the Pine Ridge region of northwestern Nebraska during July and August of 1997 to determine attitudes toward elk (Cervus elaphus) and elk management in Nebraska. Fifty-nine percent of the respondents were aware that elk occupied the Pine Ridge, 95% favored free-ranging elk, and 55% favored hunting as a means of managing the population. Nebraska residents were more aware of elk and elk hunting in the Pine Ridge than were nonresidents. Also, more residents had observed elk and were willing to drive longer distances to …

Long-Term Agricultural Land-Use Trends In Nebraska, 1866–2007, Tim L. Hiller, Larkin A. Powell, Tim D. Mccoy, Jeffrey J. Lusk
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Although landscape changes from anthropogenic causes occur at much faster rates than those from natural processes (e.g., geological, vegetation succession), human perception of such changes is often subjective, inaccurate, or nonexistent. Given the large-scale land-use changes that have occurred throughout the Great Plains, the potential impacts of land-use changes on ecological systems, and the insight gained from knowledge of land-use trends (e.g., to compare to wildlife population trends), we synthesized information related to land-use trends in Nebraska during 1866–2007. We discussed and interpreted known and potential causes of short- and long-term land-use trends based on agricultural and weather data; farm …
Book Review: Archaeological Landscapes On The High Plains Edited By Laura L. Scheiber And Bonnie J. Clark, Marcel Kornfeld
Book Review: Archaeological Landscapes On The High Plains Edited By Laura L. Scheiber And Bonnie J. Clark, Marcel Kornfeld
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
In 1962 Lewis Binford (American Antiquity, 28 [2]:217-25) classified archaeological objects into technomic, sociotechnic, and ideotechnic categories. In the following decades the New Archaeologists, largely concerned with societies at the Domestic Mode of Production, emphasized the technomic objects. Prehistorians of state societies were much more frequently faced with socio- and ideotechnic objects, ritual and state symbols; the significance of these to all societies eventually crawled back into the thinking of prehistorians of band and tribal systems.
Thence come landscapes into the archaeological discourse. As with manufactured objects, landscapes can be categorized into technomic, sociotechnic, and ideotechnic classes. And …
Book Review: Collaborating At The Trowel’S Edge: Teaching And Learning In Indigenous Archaeology Edited By Stephen W. Silliman, Joe Watkins
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
This book is an outgrowth of a symposium presented at the 2005 Society for American Archaeology annual meeting and judged by the Amerind Foundation as the conference’s outstanding symposium. The original symposium papers, further refined during an Amerind Foundation-sponsored seminar held in October of the same year, form the book’s chapters. The volume’s rather lofty goal, as set out in Silliman’s introductory chapter, is to “redirect contemporary archaeology in many ways that are more methodologically rich, theoretically interesting, culturally sensitive, community responsive, ethically aware, and socially just.”
The chapters in part 1 focus on field schools and workshops conducted in …

Nanometrology Room Design: The Performance And Characterization Of The Kevin G. Hall High-Accuracy Laboratory, John R. Weaver, Mark Voorhis, Ron Reifenberger
Birck Facilities
New buildings focused on the practice of nanotechnology reflect a pressing need to develop advanced techniques to enable reliable work at the nanoscale. Often when planning a nanotechnology building, a decision must be made to include high-accuracy nanometrology rooms. The purpose of these rooms is to provide high-quality space that can be utilized on a daily basis to facilitate experiments requiring nanoscale precision, to develop new instrumentation, and to develop new techniques capable of probing the nanoscale. Typically, these rooms reduce vibration (including acoustic noise) and electromagnetic interference to very low levels while maintaining a high level of temperature stability. …
Numerical Simulation Of Gas-Phonon Coupling In Thermal Transpiration Flows, Xiaohui Guo, Dhruv Singh, Jayathi Murthy, Alina A. Alexeenko
Numerical Simulation Of Gas-Phonon Coupling In Thermal Transpiration Flows, Xiaohui Guo, Dhruv Singh, Jayathi Murthy, Alina A. Alexeenko
PRISM: NNSA Center for Prediction of Reliability, Integrity and Survivability of Microsystems
Thermal transpiration is a rarefied gas flow driven by a wall temperature gradient and is a promising mechanism for gas pumping without moving parts, known as the Knudsen pump. Obtaining temperature measurements along capillary walls in a Knudsen pump is difficult due to extremely small length scales. Meanwhile, simplified analytical models are not applicable under the practical operating conditions of a thermal transpiration device, where the gas flow is in the transitional rarefied regime. Here, we present a coupled gas-phonon heat transfer and flow model to study a closed thermal transpiration system. Discretized Boltzmann equations are solved for molecular transport …
Book Review: Genetic Glass Ceilings: Transgenics For Crop Diversity By Jonathan Gressel, George Acquaah
Book Review: Genetic Glass Ceilings: Transgenics For Crop Diversity By Jonathan Gressel, George Acquaah
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
In what is destined to become a classic, Jonathan Grassel’s Genetic Glass Ceiling: Transgenics for Crop Diversity is a carefully crafted book that is firmly rooted in science, engaging and thought-provoking, very bold in its assertions, and yet not overly alarming. Throughout, its author challenges his readers to think outside the box. Cognizant of the fact that genetic engineering as a tool in the plant breeder’s toolkit has its ardent proponents as well as detractors, Grassel, who obviously belongs to the former camp, devotes the first nine chapters to a thorough review of the science, showing how plant breeders are …

Book Review: The Guide To Kansas Birds And Birding Hot Spots By Bob Gress And Pete Janzen, William E. Jensen
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Some newcomers to—or even long-time residents of—Kansas (or the Great Plains in general) need an inspirational introduction to the wonderful natural history offered by midcontinental North America. The Guide to Kansas Birds and Birding Hot Spots by Bob Gress and Pete Janzen accomplishes such an introduction. Though photographic bird guides have their limitations in illustrating plumage variation, the outstanding color photographs by Gress are exceptionally sharp, colorful, and do well in depicting field marks with frame-filling views of each species profiled. The photos are vast improvements over any preceding bird guide specific to Kansas (e.g., Thompson and Ely, Birds in …

The Grasshoppers Arphia Xanthoptera And Dichromorpha Viridis Prefer Introduced Smooth Brome Over Other Grasses, Sean D. Whipple, Mathew L. Brust, Wyatt Hoback, Kerri M. Farnsworth-Hoback
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
A study of feeding preference was conducted on two tallgrass prairie grasshopper species, the autumn yellow-winged grasshopper Arphia xanthoptera (Burmeister) and the short-winged green grasshopper Dichromorpha viridis (Scudder), to determine if they would feed upon introduced grass species. Both grasshoppers were offered two non-native cool-season grasses, smooth brome (Bromus inermis Leyss) and Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), and two native warm-season grasses, big bluestem (Adropogon gerardii Vitman) and sideoats grama (Bouteloua curtipendula Michx.). Live biomass of the plants was weighed before and after feeding to quantify the amount of each plant species consumed by the grasshoppers. …
