Tree Fruits As Annual Crops?, Stephen L. Young Oct 2009

Tree Fruits As Annual Crops?, Stephen L. Young

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

Orchard systems have gone through dynamic changes over the past 50 years. High-density plantings and dwarfing rootstocks have allowed growers to make changes in production practices more quickly as markets have expanded and become more volatile. Will these changes in woody perennial crops in the past five decades be equaled or surpassed in the next?

From this research, it is clear that with breeding and genetics, intensive orchard systems can come into full production at a faster rate than those of the pre-twentieth century era. Future research will provide clues as to how even faster production capacity can be achieved …

Birds Of The Great Plains: Three Decades Of Change In Great Plains Birds: A 2009 Supplement To The Birds Of The Great Plains: Breeding Species And Their Distribution, Paul A. Johnsgard

Birds of the Great Plains (Revised Edition, 2009) by Paul Johnsgard

Since the 1979 publication of this book much has been learned of breeding bird distributions in North America, largely as a result of the national Breeding Bird Surveys that were initiated in the 1960s and have continued to the present (Sauer, Hines and Fallon, 2008). From these studies long-term regional average densities of breeding birds have been deduced and national maps generated (Patuxent Wildlife Research Center. 2003). There have also been several state-wide studies on breeding birds of the Great Plains, as represented by breeding bird atlases for South Dakota (Peterson, 1995), Nebraska (Mollhoff, 2001), Kansas (Busby and Zimmerman, 2001), …

Selenoproteins Regulate Macrophage Invasiveness And Extracellular Matrix-Related Gene Expression, Bradley A. Carlson, Min-Hyuk Yoo, Yasuyo Sano, Aniruddha Sengupta, Jin Young Kim, Robert Irons, Vadim N. Gladyshev, Dolph L. Hatfield, Jin Mo Park Oct 2009

Vadim Gladyshev Publications

Background: Selenium, a micronutrient whose deficiency in diet causes immune dysfunction and inflammatory disorders, is thought to exert its physiological effects mostly in the form of selenium-containing proteins (selenoproteins). Incorporation of selenium into the amino acid selenocysteine (Sec), and subsequently into selenoproteins is mediated by Sec tRNA[Ser]Sec.
Results: To define macrophage-specific selenoprotein functions, we generated mice with the Sec tRNA[Ser]Sec gene specifically deleted in myeloid cells. These mutant mice were devoid of the "selenoproteome" in macrophages, yet exhibited largely normal inflammatory responses. However, selenoprotein deficiency led to aberrant expression of extracellular matrix-related genes, and diminished migration of …

Radiation Detectors And Sources Enhanced With Micro/Nanotechnology, Chad Michael Whitney Oct 2009

Radiation Detectors And Sources Enhanced With Micro/Nanotechnology, Chad Michael Whitney

Doctoral Dissertations

The ongoing threat of nuclear terrorism presents major challenges to maintaining national security. Currently, only a small percentage of the cargo containers that enter America are searched for fissionable bomb making materials. This work reports on a multi-channel radiation detection platform enabled with nanoparticles that is capable of detecting and discriminating all types of radiation emitted from fissionable bomb making materials. Typical Geiger counters are limited to detecting only beta and gamma radiation. The micro-Geiger counter reported here detects all species of radiation including beta particles, gamma/X-rays, alpha particles, and neutrons. The multi-species detecting micro-Geiger counter contains a hermetically sealed …

Controlling The Dengue Mosquito (Aedes Aegypti): Assessment Of The Effects Of Metofluthrin, A Novel Vapor-Active Pyrethroid, On Mosquito Behavior In A Modeled Domestic Setting., Randy Kring

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Dengue fever is a potentially life-threatening illness that is endemic in over 100 countries and threatens approximately half of the world’s population. The dengue virus is transmitted between humans by a mosquito vector, principally the dengue mosquito, Aedes aegypti. This mosquito prefers to live and feed in and around people’s homes. As a result, preventing mosquito bites within a domestic setting is essential to controlling the dengue virus. Although several methods of bite prevention are currently available to the public, most of these methods only provide short-term protection from the dengue mosquito. In contrast, a recently developed synthetic pyrethroid called …

Relationship Of Reef Fish Assemblages And Topographic Complexity On Southeastern Florida Coral Reef Habitats, Brian K. Walker, Lance K. B. Jordan, Richard E. Spieler

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Reef fish assemblage relationships with in situ and lidar topographic measurements across the seascape were analyzed to evaluate the possibility of using lidar metrics as a proxy for prediction models. In situ topographic complexity (i.e., linear rugosity) was measured from 346 point-count fish surveys spanning the reef seascape. Lidar topographic measurements (i.e., surface rugosity, elevation, and volume) were obtained from a high-resolution lidar bathymetric dataset of each survey's footprint. The survey sites were characterized by an independently derived benthic habitat map. Reef fish abundance and species richness appeared to increase with increasing topographic complexity. Although significant, the relationship was weak. …

The Emerging Role Of Lidar Remote Sensing In Coastal Research And Resource Management Full Access, John C. Brock, Samuel J. Purkis

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Knowledge of coastal elevation is an essential requirement for resource management and scientific research. Recognizing the vast potential of lidar remote sensing in coastal studies, this Special Issue includes a collection of articles intended to represent the state-of-the-art for lidar investigations of nearshore submerged and emergent ecosystems, coastal morphodynamics, and hazards due to sea-level rise and severe storms. Some current applications for lidar remote sensing described in this Special Issue include bluegreen wavelength lidar used for submarine coastal benthic environments such as coral reef ecosystems, airborne lidar used for shoreline mapping and coastal change detection, and temporal waveform-resolving lidar used …

Some Psychological Variables Differentiating Between Adolescents With Step-Parents And Those Without Step-Parents, Alaba Adenuga, A. Odusole

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The well being of adolescents has become topic of increasing interest among researchers in general. It is now regarded as something worthy of empirical investigation by researchers in eliciting without faking, the true status of the living and parenting conditions of adolescents (Marks 1998; Leug and Jim Park 2000). Newman (1994) however observed that there has been great increase in divorce rate that is threatening the marriage institution on the pages of parent media and also on the electronic media. Worse still, the failure rate of second marriages has been found to be higher than that of first-time marriages which …

Environmental Litigation Standing After Massachusetts V. Epa: Center For Biological Diversity V. Epa, Andy Hoisado Oct 2009

Environmental Litigation Standing After Massachusetts V. Epa: Center For Biological Diversity V. Epa, Andy Hoisado

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

As a consequence of the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark 2007 decision in Massachusetts v. Environmental Protection Agency, reduced standing requirements have enabled litigators to pursue environmental claims and compel U.S. Federal agencies to enforce existing statutes. Center for Biological Diversity v. Environmental Protection Agency is predicated upon these reduced standing requirements. On May 14, 2009, the Center for Biological Diversity (“CBD”) filed a complaint in the Western District of Washington against the Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) based on EPA’s failure to list and regulate damage caused to Washington’s coastal waters by ocean acidification. In the suit, the CBD alleged that …

Tension Between Hydroelectric Energy’S Benefits As A Renewable And Its Detrimental Effects On Endangered Species, Janet M. Hager Oct 2009

Tension Between Hydroelectric Energy’S Benefits As A Renewable And Its Detrimental Effects On Endangered Species, Janet M. Hager

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

A recent Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals decision, National Wildlife Federation v. National Marine Fisheries Service, exemplifies how one form of renewable energy, hydroelectric power, has been challenged by the environmental community for its detrimental effect on endangered fish species. The case demonstrates that, as Congress moves to incentivize hydroelectric power, there may be a temptation for Congress to exploit a judicial loophole to make the Endangered Species Act (“ESA”) inapplicable to dam operations.
