Utility Of Repeat Screening For Asymptomatic Bacteriuria In Pregnancy, Sara Whetstone Oct 2009

Utility Of Repeat Screening For Asymptomatic Bacteriuria In Pregnancy, Sara Whetstone

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

UTILITY OF REPEAT SCREENING FOR ASYMPTOMATIC BACTERIURIA IN PREGNANCY Sara Whetstone, Stephen Thung, and Jessica Illuzzi. Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences, Yale University, School of Medicine, New Haven, CT. Asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of developing pyelonephritis. The objectives of our study were to determine the incidence of ASB throughout the first two trimesters of pregnancy and to compare the cost effectiveness of performing repeat screening with a single screening strategy for ASB to prevent pyelonephritis. In this prospective cohort study, 206 pregnant women at an urban academic obstetric clinic provided urine …

Photosensitive Polymeric Material For Worm Optical Data Storage With Two Photon Fluorescent Readout. Div.B, Kevin Belfield Oct 2009

Photosensitive Polymeric Material For Worm Optical Data Storage With Two Photon Fluorescent Readout. Div.B, Kevin Belfield

UCF Patents

A photosensitive polymeric material was prepared and used to demonstrate 3-D optical data storage. Recording by conventional UV visible exposure and photolithography or two-photon near-IR excitation was demonstrated. 3-D readout of multilayer media was demonstrated using multichannel two-photon upconverted fluorescence detection. Both positive and negative image formation is possible.

Comparison Of Spatial Summation Properties Of Neurons In Macaque V1 And V2, S. Shushruth, Jennifer M. Ichida, Jonathan B. Levitt, Alessandra Angelucci

Publications and Research

In visual cortex, responses to stimulation of the receptive field (RF) are modulated by simultaneous stimulation of the RF surround. The mechanisms for surround modulation remain unidentified. We previously proposed that in the primary visual cortex (V1), near surround modulation is mediated by geniculocortical and horizontal connections and far surround modulation by interareal feedback connections. To understand spatial integration in the secondary visual cortex (V2) and its underlying circuitry, we have characterized spatial summation in different V2 layers and stripe compartments and compared it to that in V1. We used grating stimuli in circular and annular apertures of different sizes …

Tetrabromobisphenol A Has Immunosuppressive Effects On Human Natural Killer Cells, Esther Caroline Kibakaya, Krishna Stephen, Margaret M. Whalen

Chemistry Faculty Research

Human natural killer (NK) cells are lymphocytes that destroy tumor cells, virally-infected cells, and antibody-coated cells. Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) is used both as a reactive and as an additive flame retardant in a variety of materials and appears to contaminate the environment. TBBPA has been found in human blood samples and if it interferes with NK cell function, this could increase the risk of tumor development and/or viral infection. The present study examines the effects of exposure to various concentrations of TBBPA for 24 hr, 48 hr, and 6 days on the lytic function, tumor-target-binding function, and ATP levels of …

Mast Cell–Derived Particles Deliver Peripheral Signals To Remote Lymph Nodes, Christian A. Kunder, Ashley L. St. John, Guojie Li, Kam W. Leong, Brent Berwin, Herman F. Staats, Soman N. Abraham

Dartmouth Scholarship

During infection, signals from the periphery are known to reach draining lymph nodes (DLNs), but how these molecules, such as inflammatory cytokines, traverse the significant distances involved without dilution or degradation remains unclear. We show that peripheral mast cells, upon activation, release stable submicrometer heparin-based particles containing tumor necrosis factor and other proteins. These complexes enter lymphatic vessels and rapidly traffic to the DLNs. This physiological drug delivery system facilitates communication between peripheral sites of inflammation and remote secondary lymphoid tissues.
