Reproductive Traits In The Northern Scorpion (Paruroctonus Boreus), James N. Barron, Amy L. Weidlich Oct 2009

Reproductive Traits In The Northern Scorpion (Paruroctonus Boreus), James N. Barron, Amy L. Weidlich

Western North American Naturalist

Despite its large geographic range, little is known about reproductive traits in the northern scorpion (Paruroctonus boreus). We analyzed reproductive traits for 36 females from a population near Billings, Montana. All data were collected within a single year. Litter size, offspring mass, total litter mass (TLM), and relative litter mass (RLM) were within the ranges of values reported for other species in the Vaejovidae. Female size (length or mass) was not correlated with any reproductive trait. Litter size and offspring mass were each positively correlated with RLM, suggesting that females investing relatively larger amounts of energy in reproduction …

The Effects Of Varied Densities On The Growth And Emigration Of Adult Cutthroat Trout And Brook Trout In Fenced Stream Enclosures, David J. Buys, Robert H. Hilderbrand, Jeffrey L. Kershner Oct 2009

The Effects Of Varied Densities On The Growth And Emigration Of Adult Cutthroat Trout And Brook Trout In Fenced Stream Enclosures, David J. Buys, Robert H. Hilderbrand, Jeffrey L. Kershner

Western North American Naturalist

We evaluated the effects of various density treatments on adult fish growth and emigration rates between Bonneville cutthroat trout Oncorhynchus clarki utah and brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis in stream enclosures in Beaver Creek, Idaho. We used 3 density treatments (low, ambient, and high fish densities) to evaluate density-related effects and to ensure a response. Intraspecific ambient-density tests using cutthroat trout only were also performed. Results indicated an absence of cage effects in the stream enclosures and no differences in fish growth between ambient-density stream-enclosure fish and free-range fish. Brook trout outgrew and moved less than cutthroat trout in the stream …

The Anchor, Volume 123.05: October 7, 2009, Hope College

The Anchor: 2009

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Stormwater Management Database For The City Of Dover, New Hampshire, Raymond E. Grizzle, Krystin M. Ward Oct 2009

Stormwater Management Database For The City Of Dover, New Hampshire, Raymond E. Grizzle, Krystin M. Ward

PREP Reports & Publications

The overall goal of the project was to make a significant contribution to the Piscataqua Region Estuaries Partnership goal of increasing oyster (Crassostrea virginica) bottom in New Hampshire, and to do so using methods that positively affect multiple species. The focus was on those organisms (mainly macroalgae, invertebrates, and fish) that spend most of their time on oyster reefs—the resident species. A 0.5 hectare (1.25 acres) area was restored in August 2007 by constructing twelve mini-reefs (each ~6 m in diameter) in an area protected from harvest using spat-on-shell (“spat seeding”) from remotely set larvae. There was a consistent trend …

Poly-Paraphyly Of Hirudinidae: Many Lineages Of Medicinal Leeches, Anna J. Phillips, Mark E. Siddall

Publications and Research

Background: Medicinal leeches became infamous for their utility in bloodletting popularized in the 19th century, and have seen a recent resurgence in post-operative treatments for flap and replantation surgeries, and in terms of characterization of salivary anticoagulants. Notorious throughout the world, the quintessential leech family Hirudinidae has been taken for granted to be monophyletic, as has the non-bloodfeeding family Haemopidae.

Results: This study is the first to evaluate molecular evidence from hirudinid and haemopid leeches in a manner that encompasses the global scope of their taxonomic distributions. We evaluated the presumed monophyly of the Hirudinidae and assessed previous well-accepted classification …

Theoretical Studies Of Long-Range Interactions In Quasi-One Dimensional Cylindrical Structures, Kevin Tatur Oct 2009

Theoretical Studies Of Long-Range Interactions In Quasi-One Dimensional Cylindrical Structures, Kevin Tatur

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Casimir forces originating from vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic fields are of increasing importance in many scientific and technological areas. The manifestations of these long-range forces at the nanoscale have led to the need of better understanding of their contribution in relation to the stability of different physical systems as well as the operation of various technological components and devices. This dissertation presents mathematical and theoretical methods to calculate the Casimir interaction in various infinitely long cylindrical nanostructures. A dielectric-diamagnetic cylindrical layer immersed in a medium is first considered. The layer has a finite thickness characterized with specific dielectric and …

Method And Apparatus For Detecting Resonance In Electrostatically Driven Elements, Jay Gaillard, Razvan Marian Cicoan, Malcolm Skove, Apparao M. Rao

Clemson Patents

A method and system is disclosed that can be used to directly detect and analyze an electric signal electrostatically induced a semi-conductive or conductive element at resonance. Through detection of the changes in the characteristics of the signal from the element, the disclosed devices can detect, for instance, presence of chemical/biological species in a sample or measure physical parameters of a sample such as pressure/acceleration, magnetic force, temperature, and/or extremely small masses. The disclosed systems include one or more micro- or nano-sized elements. Through modulation of an electric charge on a counter-electrode that is located at a pre-determined distance from …

Pancreatic Cancer Cells Resistance To Gemcitabine: The Role Of Muc4 Mucin., S. Bafna, Sukhwinder Kaur, N. Momi, Surinder K. Batra Oct 2009

Pancreatic Cancer Cells Resistance To Gemcitabine: The Role Of Muc4 Mucin., S. Bafna, Sukhwinder Kaur, N. Momi, Surinder K. Batra

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

BACKGROUND: A major obstacle to the successful management of pancreatic cancer is to acquire resistance to the existing chemotherapeutic agents. Resistance to gemcitabine, the standard first-line chemotherapeutic agent for advanced and metastatic pancreatic cancer, is mainly attributed to an altered apoptotic threshold in the pancreatic cancer. The MUC4 transmembrane glycoprotein is aberrantly overexpressed in the pancreatic cancer and recently, has been shown to increase pancreatic tumour cell growth by the inhibition of apoptosis.

METHODS: Effect of MUC4 on pancreatic cancer cells resistance to gemcitabine was studied in MUC4-expressing and MUC4-knocked down pancreatic cancer cell lines after treatment with gemcitabine by …
