Cooperation Between A Coenzyme A-Independent Stand-Alone Initiation Module And An Iterative Type I Polyketide Synthase During Synthesis Of Mycobacterial Phenolic Glycolipids, Weiguo He, Clifford E. Soll, Sivagami Sundaram Chavadi, Guangtao Zhang, J. David Warren, Luis E. N. Quadri Oct 2009

N. Quadri

Publications and Research

Several Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains, Mycobacterium leprae, and other mycobacterial pathogens produce a group of small-molecule virulence factors called phenolic glycolipids (PGLs). PGLs play key roles in pathogenicity and host−pathogen interaction. Thus, elucidation of the PGL biosynthetic pathway will not only expand our understanding of natural product biosynthesis, but may also illuminate routes to novel therapeutics to afford alternative lines of defense against mycobacterial infections. In this study, we report an investigation of the enzymatic requirements for the production of long-chain p-hydroxyphenylalkanoate intermediates of PGL biosynthesis. We demonstrate a functional cooperation between a coenzyme A-independent stand-alone didomain initiation module (FadD22) and …

Challenges To Educating The Next Generation Of Wildland Fire Professionals In The United States, Leda N. Kobziar, Monique E. Rocca, Christopher Dicus, Chad Hoffman, Neil Sugihara, Andrea E. Thode, J. Morgan Varner, Penelope Morgan Oct 2009

Challenges To Educating The Next Generation Of Wildland Fire Professionals In The United States, Leda N. Kobziar, Monique E. Rocca, Christopher Dicus, Chad Hoffman, Neil Sugihara, Andrea E. Thode, J. Morgan Varner, Penelope Morgan

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

Over the last 20 years, the duties of US fire professionals have become more complex and risk laden because of fuel load accumulation, climate change, and the increasing wildland-urban interface. Incorporation of fire use and ecological principles into fire management policies has further expanded the range of expertise and knowledge required of fire professionals. The educational and training systems that produce these professionals, however, have been slow to organize an updated and coordinated approach to preparing future practitioners. Consequently, aspiring fire professionals face numerous challenges related to scheduling conflicts, limited higher education programs in fire science, lack of coordination between …

These words became the basis for a complete overhaul of one of my favorite class periods in one of my favorite courses: Ethical, Social, and Legal Environment of Business, where I teach about the agency theory

Hero-Haters: The Modern Cynicism Towards Perfect Heroes, Janani Comar '11 Oct 2009

Hero-Haters: The Modern Cynicism Towards Perfect Heroes, Janani Comar '11

2009 Fall Semester

Mark Twain was noted for saying, “If everybody was satisfied with himself there would be no heroes.” The Anglo-Saxon tale of Beowulf, translated by Seamus Heaney, used precisely this idea of a hero, a perfect version of themselves, to be the lead in their story. Beowulf was seen as flawless, able to defeat any obstacle that came in his path. His character was one that reflected their hopes of a sort of savior who possessed the refined skills they did not seem to have. In contrast, the modern take on heroes has always found some blemish on …

Same-Sex Relationships And The Full Faith And Credit Clause: Reducing America To The Lowest Common Denominator, Rena M. Lindevaldsen

Faculty Publications and Presentations

This Article examines the legal and policy implications that arise when a state that expressly prohibits recognition or enforcement of any rights arising from a same-sex relationship is confronted with a request to register and enforce a child custody order issued by another state that gives custody or visitation rights to a biological mother's former same-sex partner. As more states confer marital rights to same-sex couples, this issue will occur with increasing frequency. The first reported case in the nation to address the issue, Miller-Jenkins v. Miller-Jenkins, has garnered attention from the national media, including a cover story in the …
