Background: The protein kinases Mps1 and Polo, which are required for proper cell cycle regulation in meiosis and mitosis, localize to numerous ooplasmic filaments during prometaphase in Drosophila oocytes. These filaments first appear throughout the oocyte at the end of prophase and are disassembled after egg activation.
Methodology/principal findings: We showed here that Mps1 and Polo proteins undergo dynamic and reversible localization to static ooplasmic filaments as part of an oocyte-specific response to hypoxia. The observation that Mps1- and Polo-associated filaments reappear in the same locations through multiple cycles of oxygen deprivation demonstrates that underlying structural components of the filaments …

Exercise-Induced Asthma: Critical Analysis Of The Protective Role Of Montelukast., Terrence W. Carver
Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
Exercise-induced asthma/exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIA/EIB) is a prevalent and clinically important disease affecting young children through older adulthood. These terms are often used interchangeably and the differences are not clearly defined in the literature. The pathogenesis of EIA/EIB may be different in those with persistent asthma compared to those with exercise-induced symptoms only. The natural history of EIA is unclear and may be different for elite athletes. Leukotriene biology has helped the understanding of EIB. The type and intensity of exercise are important factors for EIB. Exercise participation is necessary for proper development and control of EIA is recommended. Symptoms of …

The Effects Of Field-Of-View And Patient Size On Ct Numbers From Cone-Beam Computed Tomography., Katrina Y T Seet, Arvand Barghi, Slav Yartsev, Jacob Van Dyk
Oncology Publications
Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is used for patient alignment before treatment and is ideal for use in adaptive radiotherapy to account for tumor shrinkage, organ deformation and weight loss. However, CBCT images are prone to artifacts such as streaking and cupping effects, reducing image quality and CT number accuracy. Our goal was to determine the optimum combination of cone-beam imaging options to increase the accuracy of image CT numbers. Several phantoms with and without inserts of known relative electron densities were imaged using the Varian on-board imaging system. It was found that CT numbers are most influenced by the selection …

Publications and Research
Background Major biological and cultural innovations in late Pliocene hominin evolution are frequently linked to the spread or fluctuating presence of C4 grass in African ecosystems. Whereas the deep sea record of global climatic change provides indirect evidence for an increase in C4 vegetation with a shift towards a cooler, drier and more variable global climatic regime beginning approximately 3 million years ago (Ma), evidence for grassland-dominated ecosystems in continental Africa and hominin activities within such ecosystems have been lacking. Methodology/Principal Findings We report stable isotopic analyses of pedogenic carbonates and ungulate enamel, as well as faunal data from ∼2.0 …

Punishing Pharmaceutical Companies For Unlawful Promotion Of Approved Drugs: Why The False Claims Act Is The Wrong Rx, Vicki W. Girard
Punishing Pharmaceutical Companies For Unlawful Promotion Of Approved Drugs: Why The False Claims Act Is The Wrong Rx, Vicki W. Girard
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
This article criticizes the shift in focus from correction and compliance to punishment of pharmaceutical companies allegedly violating the Food, Drug, & Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) prohibitions on unlawful drug promotion. Traditionally, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has addressed unlawful promotional activities under the misbranding and new drug provisions of the FD&C Act. Recently though, the Justice Department (DOJ) has expanded the purview of the False Claims Act to include the same allegedly unlawful behavior on the theory that unlawful promotion “induces” physicians to prescribe drugs that result in the filing of false claims for reimbursement. Unchecked and unchallenged, …

The Pentameric Vertex Proteins Are Necessary For The Icosahedral Carboxysome Shell To Function As A Co2 Leakage Barrier, Fei Cai, Balaraj B. Menon, Gordon C. Cannon, Kenneth J. Curry, Jessup M. Shively, Sabine Heinhorst
Faculty Publications
Background
Carboxysomes are polyhedral protein microcompartments found in many autotrophic bacteria; they encapsulate the CO2 fixing enzyme, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RubisCO) within a thin protein shell and provide an environment that enhances the catalytic capabilities of the enzyme. Two types of shell protein constituents are common to carboxysomes and related microcompartments of heterotrophic bacteria, and the genes for these proteins are found in a large variety of bacteria.
Methodology/Principal Findings
We have created a Halothiobacillus neapolitanus knockout mutant that does not produce the two paralogous CsoS4 proteins thought to occupy the vertices of the icosahedral carboxysomes and related microcompartments. Biochemical …

Fabrication Of High-Capacity Biomolecular Carriers From Dispersible Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube-Polymer Composites, Pu Zhang, David B. Henthorn
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
One of the most interesting applications for carbon nanotubes is as a support material for bioanalytical devices. in this work, we successfully used an ultraviolet light initiated "graft from" polymerization method to fabricate polymer functionalized carbon nanotubes (PFCNTs) with pendant chains of various functionalities, including poly (ethylene glycol) chains to boost dispersibility and pendant epoxy groups for protein conjugate sites. a model enzyme, alkaline phosphatase, was used to study biomolecule loading efficiency as well as the retention of enzyme activity. Samples with various ratios of the two monomers were fabricated to optimize their use in aqueous environments, and an optimal …
