Human Health Risk To Ultrafine Particles In Jakarta, Budi Haryanto

Kesmas

In Jakarta, the main pollution sources are vehicles and industry, with motorized traffic accounting for 71% of the oxides of nitrogen (NOX), 15% of sulphur-dioxide (SO2), and 70% of particulate matter (PM 10 ) of the total emission load. Both urban population size and the fraction of the population that owns a private vehicle are increasing. The study objective is to determine the numbers of ultrafine particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 0.1 mm or less, or PM0.1 inhaled by elementary school children, commute workers with private car and commute workers with public transport. A cross-sectional study design is implemented in Jakarta 2005. Ten elementary school children, ten commuters with private car and ten commuters with public transports are purposively selected as subjects and measured personally for 3 x 24 hours using Condensation Particle Counter (CPC) real-time personal exposure measurement (measured in terms of the number of particles per cubic centimeter, or # cm-3). The average concentration of ultrafine particulate matter of elementary school children at home, on the road and at school is 29,254/cm3, 147,897/cm3 and 61,033/cm3 respectively. For those commuters with private car at home, on the road and at office is 29,213/cm3, 310,179/cm3 and 42,496/cm3 respectively. For those commuters with public transport, the concentration average of at home, on the road and at office is found higher: 35,332/cm3, 453,547/cm3, and 69,867/cm3, respectively.

Facilitative Conditions For Transformative Learning, Devika Dibya Choudhuri Oct 2009

Facilitative Conditions For Transformative Learning, Devika Dibya Choudhuri

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at EMU

Teaching multicultural counseling is challenging work. In order for students to learn course material, the instructor must often send them through a process of unlearning what they previously thought they knew in an effort to have them question their assumptions and form a deeper understanding of social identity. As Dibya Choudhuri notes, this can potentially lead to transformative experiences for students, as they begin to see the world much differently than they previously had. Dibya expertly uses the theory of transformative learning to shed light on what is happening in her class as her students go through this experience. Dibya …

Using Think-Alouds To Examine Pre-Service Elementary Teachers' Visualization Of Fractional Concepts, Barbara B. Leapard Oct 2009

Using Think-Alouds To Examine Pre-Service Elementary Teachers' Visualization Of Fractional Concepts, Barbara B. Leapard

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at EMU

Barb Leapard’s chapter discusses a problem that might cause many of us nightmares—fractions. Barb’s students really need to understand how to work with fractions, because they will soon be teaching this subject to their elementary school students. The need to teach a subject requires a significantly higher form of learning than most students achieve. Barb’s past experiences indicated that students often do not achieve this deep understanding – they may have a rote understanding of rules for dealing with fractions, but this will not be all that useful to them in a few months, when they are teaching inquisitive elementary …

How Reacting To The Past Games "Made Me Want To Come To Class And Learn": An Assessment Of The Reacting Pedagogy At Emu, 2007-2008, Mark D. Higbee Oct 2009

How Reacting To The Past Games "Made Me Want To Come To Class And Learn": An Assessment Of The Reacting Pedagogy At Emu, 2007-2008, Mark D. Higbee

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at EMU

Mark Higbee reports in his chapter on his use of an innovative pedagogy, Reacting to the Past, at Eastern Michigan University. The Reacting method was originally developed at Barnard College; Mark’s chapter reveals the challenges of adapting this approach to a regional comprehensive university with a diverse student body. But more than that, Mark’s chapter is about the opportunities associated with using this pedagogy here at EMU. The levels of student engagement produced through students’ “playing” these elaborate games are quite impressive and, as Mark notes, very much needed in the EMU context.

One of the things I particularly like …

Examining The Challenges Of Teaching For Social Justice In Sarajevo, Brian Kirby Lanahan, Peter Mcdermott Oct 2009

Examining The Challenges Of Teaching For Social Justice In Sarajevo, Brian Kirby Lanahan, Peter Mcdermott

NERA Conference Proceedings 2009

Social justice is a critical principle of democracy. Societies seeking to become democratic must infuse social justice issues into their schools. In this qualitative study the researchers examined the extent to which social justice is being taught in Sarajevo’s educational system. With only a few exceptions, the findings indicate that education in Sarajevo has not reformed since the 92-95 conflict. Instead, Sarajevo’s curriculum has become more fragmented and less multicultural, and its schools are not preparing children to think democratically and work for social justice. Unless educational reforms accelerate, there is a real danger that the country may return to …

Available Classroom Supports For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders In Public Schools, Cheryl A. Sandford Oct 2009

Available Classroom Supports For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders In Public Schools, Cheryl A. Sandford

NERA Conference Proceedings 2009

A self-administered electronic survey and follow-up interviews were used to determine the quality, quantity and types of supports that are provided for students with autism spectrum disorders in a variety of public school settings nationwide. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted to determine the effects of educators’ background, ongoing training and development activities, opinions and attitudes of educators on the supports available. Statistically and socially significant effects were found for a number of these characteristics. A need for increased and improved educator training in autism strategies was a prevalent theme throughout the data.

Investigating Biological Activity Spectrum For Novel Styrylquinazoline Analogues, James Carroll, Jim O'Mahony, Aidan Coffey

Department of Biological Sciences Publications

In this study, series of ring-substituted 2-styrylquinazolin-4(3H)-one and 4-chloro-2-styrylquinazoline derivatives were prepared. The syntheses of the discussed compounds are presented. The compounds were analyzed by RP-HPLC to determine lipophilicity. They were tested for their inhibitory activity on photosynthetic electron transport (PET) in spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) chloroplasts. Primary in vitro screening of the synthesized compounds was also performed against four mycobacterial strains and against eight fungal strains. Several compounds showed biological activity comparable with or higher than that of the standard isoniazid. It was found that the electronic properties of the R substituent, and not the total lipophilicity of the …

Faculty Publications

Phytochromes are a collection of bilin-containing photoreceptors that regulate a diverse array of processes in microorganisms and plants through photoconversion between two stable states, a red light-absorbing Pr form, and a far red light-absorbing Pfr form. Recently, a novel set of phytochrome-like chromoproteins was discovered in cyanobacteria, designated here as cyanochromes, that instead photoconvert between stable blue and green light-absorbing forms Pb and Pg, respectively. Here, we show that the distinctive absorption properties of cyanochromes are facilitated through the binding of phycocyanobilin via two stable cysteine-based thioether linkages within the cGMP phosphodiesterase/ adenyl cyclase/FhlA domain. Absorption, resonance Raman and infrared …

Doing The History Of Science And The Suspension Of Belief, Richard H. Beyler Oct 2009

Doing The History Of Science And The Suspension Of Belief, Richard H. Beyler

Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series

Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1817) described the "suspension of disbelief" as a sort of bargain between the author and the audience necessary to creative literature. Conversely, one might describe the "suspension of belief" as a necessary element of doing the history of science. In modern civilization, science counts as the social institution which delineates the boundaries of knowledge per se, as opposed to belief, opinion, etc. We might describe this as the cultural myth of science--not in the sense of judging its truth or falsehood, but rather in the sense of its being foundational and largely unquestioned in modern society. Yet …

From Solar Cells To Exascale Computing, Kirk E. Jordan

Amgen Seminar Series in Chemical Engineering

Beginning with a brief overview of a boundary integral problem that led from an intractable computational problem to model an efficient solar cell but through a novel mathematical formulation became tractable, I will lay the foundation of the importance of mathematics in computation. This problem led to my career in High Performance Computing (HPC). Today, as we move from the Petascale era to Exascale era, HPC is a tool frequently used to understand complex problems in numerous areas such as aerospace, biology, climate modeling and energy. Scientists and engineers working on problems in these and other areas demand ever increasing …

Developing Kham: An Inquiry Into The Use Of Environmental And Economic History For Development Policy In Tibetan Regions, Jared Phillips Oct 2009

Developing Kham: An Inquiry Into The Use Of Environmental And Economic History For Development Policy In Tibetan Regions, Jared Phillips

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

Policymakers must learn from the past, not blindly imitate it in order to arrive at workable solutions for the country as a whole. With these considerations, taking place in part in small regions of the plateau already, economic development stands to move forward in an organic manner, accounting for the needs of the local ecology, the local people, and the burgeoning Chinese economy. If not, further development will most likely falter at best, and at worst it will present a rapidly growing China with seemingly insurmountable problems.
