Plant Sex And The Evolution Of Plant Defenses Against Herbivores, Marc T.J. Johnson, Stacey Dewitt Smith, Marc D. Rausher, Douglas J. Futuyma

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Despite the importance of plant–herbivore interactions to the ecology and evolution of terrestrial ecosystems, the evolutionary factors contributing to variation in plant defenses against herbivores remain unresolved. We used a comparative phylogenetic approach to examine a previously untested hypothesis (Recombination-Mating System Hypothesis) that posits that reduced sexual reproduction limits adaptive evolution of plant defenses against arthropod herbivores. To test this hypothesis we focused on the evening primrose family (Onagraceae), which includes both sexual and functionally asexual species. Ancestral state reconstructions on a 5-gene phylogeny of the family revealed between 18 and 21 independent transitions between sexual and asexual reproduction. Based …

Biological Sciences

To investigate the connectivity between central California marine protected areas (MPAs), back-projections were calculated using the network of high-frequency (HF) radar ocean surface current mapping stations operated along the California coast by the member institutions of the Coastal Ocean Currents Monitoring Program with funding provided by California voters through Propositions 40 & 50 and administered by the State Coastal Conservancy. Trajectories of 1 km resolution grids of water particles were back-projected from ten MPAs each hour, out through 40 days in the past, from each day in 2008, producing a map of where surface waters travel over a 40-day period …

Periodicity Detection And Localization Using Spike Timing From The Aer Ear, Theodore Yu, Andrew Schwartz, John Harris, Malcolm Slaney, Shih Chii Liu Oct 2009

Periodicity Detection And Localization Using Spike Timing From The Aer Ear, Theodore Yu, Andrew Schwartz, John Harris, Malcolm Slaney, Shih Chii Liu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a system consisting of a spiking cochlea chip and real-time event-based processing software that is able to discriminate between two sets of sounds based on their periodicity content. The periodicity measurements are computed from the spike timing information of asynchronous output spikes from the binaural spiking-cochlea chip. The chip consists of a matched pair of silicon cochlea with an address event interface for the output. Each section of the cochlea is modeled by a second-order low-pass filter followed by a simplified Inner Hair Cell circuit and a Spiking Neuron circuit. We show discrimination results using the periodicity measure …

The Impact Of Pre-Treatment Identification Of Personality Style And Personality Disorder Symptoms On Psychotherapy Outcomes In A Training Clinic, Shauncie Marie Skidmore

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

To investigate the clinical and fiscal feasibility of administering a pre-treatment, dimensional personality assessment to clients seeking treatment at university-based counseling centers, a multi-phase study was conducted. This study sought to replicate the results of a recent study conducted by Ryder, Costa Jr., and Bagby (2007) regarding the validity of the DSM-IV-TR PD symptoms and their relationship to normal personality traits. This study also investigated the clinical utility of providing pre-treatment personality information to therapists, as assessed by a dimensional measure of normal personality the NEO-PI-R. Impact on treatment outcome was evaluated. After completing a pre-treatment assessment battery, university-affiliated clinic …

Biologically Plausible Speech Recognition Using Spike-Based Phase Locking Cues, Ismail Uysal, John G. Harris Oct 2009

Biologically Plausible Speech Recognition Using Spike-Based Phase Locking Cues, Ismail Uysal, John G. Harris

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A biologically plausible algorithm is proposed for phoneme recognition that makes use of spikes for computation. The prototype system is demonstrated on voiced phonemes and shows competitive performance with state-of-the-art systems on a vowel dataset in the presence of noise. Using novel phase locking cues, the algorithm performs surprisingly well down to SNR values as low as 5dB, where the performance of the baseline algorithm used for comparison drops considerably. These results suggest, not only a possible explanation for the extreme noise robustness of human recognition, but also a novel technique for information processing for speech signals with computers. ©2009 …

A Biphasic Integrate-And-Fire System, Sheng Feng Yen, Jie Xu, Manu Rastogi, John G. Harris, Jose C. Principe, Justin C. Sanchez

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A neuronal recording system for brain-machine interfaces (BMI) based on asynchronous biphasic pulse coding is described. It demonstrates the first step in the development of a completely implanted wireless solution with a fully integrated circuit architecture. A recording experiment comparing, in parallel, a commercial recording system (Tucker-Davis Technology (TDT)) and the UF's custom solution (FWIRE) is set up to compare performance. The novel aspect of the UF system is that the analog signal is represented by an asynchronous pulse train, which provides a low-power, low-bandwidth, noise resistant means for coding and transmission. Taking advantage of neural firing features, the pulse-based …

Endogenous N-3 Fatty Acids Protect Ovariectomy Induced Bone Loss By Attenuating Osteoclastogenesis, Md Mizanur Rahman, Arunabh Bhattacharya, Jameela Banu, Jing X. Kang, Gabriel Fernandes

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

Beneficial effects of n-3 fatty acids (FA) on bone mineral density (BMD) have been reported in mice, rats and human beings, but the precise mechanisms involved have not been described. This study used the Fat-1 mouse, a transgenic model that synthesizes n-3 FA from n-6 FA to directly determine if outcome of bone health were correlated with n-3 FA. Ovariectomized (Ovx) and sham operated wild-type (WT) and Fat-1 mice were fed an AIN-93M diet containing 10% corn oil for 24 weeks. BMD was analysed by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. Fat-1 Ovx mice exhibited significantly lower level of osteotropic factors like …

In-Plane All-Photonic Transduction With Differential Splitter Using Double-Step Rib Waveguide For Photonic Microcantilever Arrays, Ryan Anderson, Seunghyun Kim, Gregory P. Nordin, Jong Wook Noh, Weisheng Hu

Faculty Publications

We report a differential splitter consisting of an asymmetric double-step multimode rib waveguide and a Y-branch splitter for in-plane photonic transduction of photonic microcantilever deflection. Arrays of photonic microcantilevers are integrated with differential splitters and an optical waveguide network to demonstrate uniformity and sensitivity of transduction. Measurement results from multiple arrays indicate a sensitivity of 0.32 x 10-3 nm-1 and minimum detectable deflection of 141 pm for a 3.5 Hz measurement bandwidth.

Xyloryctes Hope, 1837 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Dynastinae: Oryctini) In The United States. Qui Es Et Ubi Fuisti Et Quo Vadis?, Brett C. Ratcliffe

Insecta Mundi

Two species of Xyloryctes occur in the United States: X. jamaicensis (Drury) and X. thestalus Bates. Identification and distribution of these species has long been confused but is reviewed and clarified here. Xyloryctes jamaicensis occurs only in the eastern half of the U.S. and not in the southwestern U.S. as previously thought, while X. thestalus occurs in Guatemala and southern Mexico northwards to the southwestern United States. This hypothesis is corroborated by biogeographical and host plant data. Three new synonyms are listed for X. thestalus: X. faunus Casey 1915, X. hebes Casey 1915, and X. thestalus borealis Endrödi. The …
