The Anchor, Volume 123.07: October 28, 2009, Hope College

The Anchor: 2009

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Long Term Ecological Research Network

Global environmental changes have direct effects on aquatic ecosystems, as well as indirect effects through alterations of adjacent terrestrial ecosystem structure and functioning. For example, shifts in terrestrial vegetation communities resulting from global changes can affect the quantity and quality of water, organic matter, and nutrient inputs to aquatic ecosystems. The relative importance of these direct and terrestrial vegetation-mediated effects is largely unknown but essential to our ability to predict the consequences of global changes for aquatic ecosystems. Here, we present a conceptual framework for considering the relative strengths of these effects and use case studies from xeric, wet temperate, …

Mechanical Behavior And Length Adaptation Of Rabbit Bladder Smooth Muscle, Atheer Almasri Oct 2009

Mechanical Behavior And Length Adaptation Of Rabbit Bladder Smooth Muscle, Atheer Almasri

Theses and Dissertations

Overactive bladder (OAB), involuntary contractions during bladder filling, is a common condition affecting 17% of the adult population worldwide, and in the U.S. ranks ahead of diabetes in a list of the 10 most common chronic disorders (Mullins 2009). Mechanical mechanisms contributing to OAB are not completely understood and because of the unique function and broad volume range of the bladder, there may be mechanical characteristics that distinguish detrusor smooth muscle (DSM) in bladder from other smooth muscles. Recent studies have shown that the length-passive tension curve in DSM exhibits adjustable passive stiffness (APS) characterized by a passive curve that …

Segmented Professions: Further Considerations Of Theory And Practice In Lis And Librarianship, Andrew Carlin Oct 2009

Segmented Professions: Further Considerations Of Theory And Practice In Lis And Librarianship, Andrew Carlin

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

How relevant are theories of information to practical library work? Using sociology and the philosophy of social sciences, this essay discusses how theoretical work defines an area of knowledge in relation to other fields, the identification of researchable phenomena, and how phenomena are established as its own subject matter. Theorizing is a generic activity, highlighting connections between theory and practice, profession and field. While proposing that theorizing is important, this paper explores the nature of theorizing in LIS, and suggests that its cognitivistic foundations impede theory development. Information is a linkage between theory and practice, and this paper argues that …

Mercury Exposure, Nutritional Deficiencies And Metabolic Disruptions May Affect Learning In Children, Renee Dufault, Roseanne Schnoll, Walter J. Lukiw, Blaise Leblanc, Charles Cornett, Lyn Patrick, David Wallinga, Steven G. Gilbert, Raquel Crider

Publications and Research

Among dietary factors, learning and behavior are influenced not only by nutrients, but also by exposure to toxic food contaminants such as mercury that can disrupt metabolic processes and alter neuronal plasticity. Neurons lacking in plasticity are a factor in neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism and mental retardation. Essential nutrients help maintain normal neuronal plasticity. Nutritional deficiencies, including deficiencies in the long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, the amino acid methionine, and the trace minerals zinc and selenium, have been shown to influence neuronal function and produce defects in neuronal plasticity, as well as impact behavior …

Differential Eeg, Sheng Feng Yen, Daniel Schoonover, Justin C. Sanchez, Jose C. Principe, John G. Harris Oct 2009

Differential Eeg, Sheng Feng Yen, Daniel Schoonover, Justin C. Sanchez, Jose C. Principe, John G. Harris

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We propose to improve the spatial resolution of electroencephalography (EEG) using a differential recording methodology. Conventional EEG (CEEG) systems independently amplify and digitize the signal from each electrode. The Differential EEG (DEEG) approach amplifies the minute difference signal between neighboring electrodes which greatly eases the burden on the subsequent amplification and data conversion stages. A custom DEEG system was designed and fabricated in a 0.6 um CMOS process. The fabricated chip was built into a small prototype DEEG recording system used to measure alpha waves from the occipital lobe of a human subject. We show that the differential approach suffers …

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Pigs challenged with hypoglycosylated variants of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV) major surface protein GP5 exhibited increased production of PRRSV-neutralizing antibodies relative to the levels of neutralizing antibodies produced by pigs immunized with wild type (wt) or glycosylated GP5. This invention provides for methods of obtaining improved immune responses in pigs to PRRSV, compositions useful for obtaining the improved immune responses as well as isolated polynucleotides that encode hypoglycosylated variants of PRRSV major surface protein GP5.

Magnetic And Nonmagnetic Nanoparticles From A Group Of Uniform Materials Based On Organic Salts, Aaron Tesfai, Bilal El-Zahab, Algernon T. Kelley, Min Li, Jayne C. Garno, Gary A. Baker, Isiah M. Warner Oct 2009

Magnetic And Nonmagnetic Nanoparticles From A Group Of Uniform Materials Based On Organic Salts, Aaron Tesfai, Bilal El-Zahab, Algernon T. Kelley, Min Li, Jayne C. Garno, Gary A. Baker, Isiah M. Warner

Faculty Publications

The size and uniformity of magnetic nanoparticles developed from a group of uniform materials based on organic salts (GUMBOS) were controlled using an in situ ion exchange, water-in-oil (w/o) microemulsion preparation. Most of these nanoGUMBOS are in fact ionic liquids (i.e., melting points less than 100 °C), while others have melting points above the conventional 100 °C demarcation. Simple variations in the reagent concentrations following a w/o approach allowed us to smoothly and predictably vary nanoparticle dimensions across a significant size regime with excellent uniformity. Average sizesofGUMBOS particles ranging from 14 to 198 nm were achieved by manipulation of the …

An Integrated Recording System Using An Asynchronous Pulse Representation, Sheng Feng Yen, Jie Xu, Manu Rastogi, John G. Harris, Jose C. Principe, Justin C. Sanchez Oct 2009

An Integrated Recording System Using An Asynchronous Pulse Representation, Sheng Feng Yen, Jie Xu, Manu Rastogi, John G. Harris, Jose C. Principe, Justin C. Sanchez

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A neuronal recording system for brain-machine interfaces (BMI) based on asynchronous biphasic pulse coding is described. It demonstrates the first step in the development of a complete implanted wireless solution with fully integrated circuit architecture. A recording experiment comparing in parallel a commercial recording system (Tucker-Davis Technology (TDT)) and the UF's custom solution (FWIRE) is set up to compare performance. The novel aspect of the UF system is that the analog signal is represented by an asynchronous pulse train, which provides a low-power, low-bandwidth, noise-resistant means for coding and transmission. Taking advantage of neural firing features, the pulse-based approach uses …
