Accurate Molecular Classification Of Cancer Using Simple Rules., Xiaosheng Wang, Osamu Gotoh
Accurate Molecular Classification Of Cancer Using Simple Rules., Xiaosheng Wang, Osamu Gotoh
Journal Articles: Genetics, Cell Biology & Anatomy
BACKGROUND: One intractable problem with using microarray data analysis for cancer classification is how to reduce the extremely high-dimensionality gene feature data to remove the effects of noise. Feature selection is often used to address this problem by selecting informative genes from among thousands or tens of thousands of genes. However, most of the existing methods of microarray-based cancer classification utilize too many genes to achieve accurate classification, which often hampers the interpretability of the models. For a better understanding of the classification results, it is desirable to develop simpler rule-based models with as few marker genes as possible.

Invention And Transfer Of Climate Change Mitigation Technologies On A Global Scale: A Study Drawing On Patent Data, Matthieu Glachant, Antoine Dechezleprêtre, Ivan Hascic, Nick Johnstone, Yann Ménière
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Accelerating the development of less GHG intensive technologies and promoting their global diffusion - in particular in fast-growing emerging economies - is imperative in achieving the transition to a low-carbon economy. Consequently, technology is at the core of current discussions about the post-Kyoto regime. The purpose of this study is to fuel this discussion by providing an in-depth analysis of the geographic distribution of climate mitigation inventions since 1978 and their international diffusion on a global scale. We use the EPO/OECD World Patent Statistical Database (PATSTAT) which includes patents from 81 national and international patent offices. Note that the Least …
Investing In Biogas: Timing, Technological Choice And The Value Of Flexibility From Inputs Mix, Michele Moretto, Luca Di Corato
Investing In Biogas: Timing, Technological Choice And The Value Of Flexibility From Inputs Mix, Michele Moretto, Luca Di Corato
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
In a continuous-time framework we study the technology and investment choice problem of a continuous co-digestion biogas plant dealing with randomly fluctuating relative convenience of input factor costs. Input factors enter into the productive process together mixed according to a given initial rule. Being inputs relative convenience stochastically evolving, a successive revision of the initial rule may be desirable. Hence, when the venture starts the manager may or may not install a flexible technology allowing for such option. Investment is irreversible and flexibility is costly. The problem is solved determining in the light of future prospects the optimal revision and …

Synthetic Science: A Response To Rabinow, David S. Caudill
Synthetic Science: A Response To Rabinow, David S. Caudill
Working Paper Series
Rabinow’s description of the unique collaborative goal of synthetic biology at Berkeley, to foster a coproduction among multiple disciplines and perspectives from the outset (as opposed to downstream reflection upon ethical, legal, and social implications), is somewhat misleading. While that particular assemblage is represented as coproductive, the inevitability of science as a coproduction is eclipsed. That shortcoming may well be a strategic compromise to ensure effective collaboration, but it could backfire. Idealized images of science, which might be termed synthetic or artificial, have had adverse consequences in legal and administrative assessments of reliable science.

Terrain Constrained Stereo Correspondence, Gabrielle Inglis, Chris Roman
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
There is a persistent need in the oceanographic community for accurate three dimensional reconstructions of seafloor structures. To meet this need underwater mapping techniques have expanded to include the use of stereo vision and high frequency multibeam sonar for mapping scenes 10's to 100's of square meters in size. Both techniques have relative advantages and disadvantages that depend on the task at hand and the desired accuracy. In this paper, we develop a method to constrain the often problematic stereo correspondence search to small sections of the image that correspond to estimated ranges along the epipolar lines calculated from coregistered …

Soil depth is an important input parameter in hydrological and ecological modeling. Presently, the soil depth data available in national soil databases (STATSGO and SSURGO) from the Natural Resources Conservation Service are provided as averages within generalized land units (map units). Spatial uncertainty within these units limits their applicability for distributed modeling in complex terrain. This work reports statistical models for prediction of soil depth in a semiarid mountainous watershed that are based upon the relationship between soil depth and topographic and land cover attributes. Soil depth was surveyed by driving a rod into the ground until refusal at locations …

Testicular germ cell tumors (TGCTs) are classified as seminonas or non-seminomas of which a major subset is embryonal carcinoma (EC) that can differentiate into diverse tissues. The pluripotent nature of human ECs resembles that of embryonic stem (ES) cells. Many Wnt signalling species are regulated during differentiation of TGCT-derived EC cells. This study comprehensively investigated expression profiles of Wnt signalling components regulated during induced differentiation of EC cells and explored the role of key components in maintaining pluripotency.

Data Curation Profiles Directory
The data set of interest in this data curation profile comes from the study of geobiology to analyze the impact of microbial activity on carbonization. The researcher gathers the data from hot springs and coral reef locations. The data management needs center around the ability to link together the data, which consists of Excel spreadsheets, annotated photos and microscopy images, and other files. The links would need to be maintained over time. Additionally the data would need to be submitted to a repository once manuscripts were published.
