Aluminum (Al) chemistry was studied in soils and waters of two catchments covered by spruce (Picea abies) monocultures in the Czech Republic that represent geochemical end-members of terrestrial and aquatic sensitivity to acidic deposition. The acid-sensitive Lysina catchment, underlain by granite, was compared to the acid-resistant Pluhův Bor catchment on serpentine. Organically-bound Al was the largest pool of reactive soil Al at both sites. Very high median total Al (Alt) concentrations (40 μmol L−1) and inorganic monomeric Al (Ali) concentrations (27 μmol L−1) were observed in acidic (pH 4.0) stream water at Lysina in …

Neural representations of even temporally unstructured stimuli can show complex temporal dynamics. In many systems, neuronal population codes show “progressive differentiation,” whereby population responses to different stimuli grow further apart during a stimulus presentation. Here we analyzed the response of auditory cortical populations in rats to extended tones. At onset (up to 300 ms), tone responses involved strong excitation of a large number of neurons; during sustained responses (after 500 ms) overall firing rate decreased, but most cells still showed a statistically significant difference in firing rate. Genetic parameters of longevity in crossbred mule ewes, and genetic relationships among longevity, growth, body composition, and subjectively assessed traits on mule lambs and ewes have been estimated using Bayesian linear censored models. Additionally, the genetic associations between longevity and culling reasons were examined. Data comprised 1,797 observations of mule ewes for longevity, culling reasons, growth, body composition, mouth scores, and type traits. Longevity was defined as the time (in years) from 2 yr of age (the age at first lambing of most ewes) to culling or death. Censored data (i.e., observations for which only the lower bound of the …

Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) has been associated with the administration of gadolinium-based contrast agents in patients with severely impaired renal function (SIRF), endstage renal disease (ESRD), or acute renal failure (ARF). Since the vast majority of these patients do not get NSF, it is highly likely that patient factors play a role in its development. Although free or dechelated gadolinium is thought by some to be the only trigger of NSF, recent evidence suggests that chelated gadolinium may be important. Chelated gadolinium such as Omniscan (gadodiamide) and Magnevist (gadopentetate) can directly stimulate macrophages and monocytes in vitro to release profibrotic …

Child labour is a global practice and has many negative outcomes. According to International Labour Organization, child labour is the important source of child exploitation and child abuse in the world today. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan has estimated the number of Pakistani working children to be around 11-12 millions, out of which, at least, half the children are under the age of ten years. The addition of pond ash (fly ash that has been placed in evaporative ponds and subsequently dewatered) to feedlot surfaces provides a healthier environment for livestock and economic advantages for the feedlot operator. However, the water quality effects of pond ash amended surfaces are not well understood. Rapid, portable detection of biological threat agents such as Bacillus anthracis endospores (“spores”) is extremely important given the real and perceived threats of bioterrorism. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is an excellent general means for chemical detection, although special sample preparation and specialized equipment are required to employ GC-MS for detecting biological agents such as spores in the field. Human behavioral data indicate that older adults are slower to perform lexical decisions (LDs) than young adults but show similar reaction time gains when these decisions are primed semantically. The present study explored the functional neuroanatomic bases of these frequently observed behavioral findings. Young and older groups completed unprimed and primed LD tasks while functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was recorded, using a fully randomized trial design paralleling those used in behavioral research. Results from the unprimed task found that age-related slowing of LD was associated with decreased activation in perceptual extrastriate regions and increased activation in regions associated with …

A study was conducted in the Monteverde region to determine patterns of infection in Triatoma dimidiata with Trypanosoma cruzi. It was predicted that proximity to domestic animals and looking at the sex ratio would reveal patterns of infection in T. dimidiata. This study was conducted in San Luis, and 12 properties were searched for T. dimidiata. Fourteen individuals were found overall at four sites with two infected individuals. However, the two infected individuals were found in close association with dogs. Fewer nymphs than expected were found this year. Ophryocystis elektroscirrha, a protozoan parasite, can have many different effects on the Monarch Butterfly, Danaus plexippus, including difficulty emerging from the pupal case and spreading their wings, and increased mortality within 24 hours of eclosion. Color in the wings of the butterfly is a strong indicator of fitness in terms of reproductive success. In this study I test if parasite load has an effect on the fitness of individuals of D. plexippus using color of the wings as a proxy for fitness. I measured the wingspan; asymmetry of forewings; color hue, saturation, and brightness; and parasite load on 15 individuals …

With crickets, calls may not be used soley for attracting a mate; they can also be used to reduce a competitor’s reproductive success. Human altered landscapes often have significant impacts on water quality in their respective watersheds. However, in order to create policy and educate people about better land use practices, it is necessary to have a thorough understanding of the effects of land use on stream water quality. This study looks at the health of stream water in three streams flowing through different land uses – forest, cattle pasture, and coffee – in San Luis and Cañitas in the Monteverde area. Hummingbirds have high metabolic needs and many aggressively compete for food. Competition is a potentially important component of resource defense but its impact on aggression and foraging of hummingbirds is not well understood. I manipulated the perception of competition by using the playback of the Coppery-headed Emerald (Elvira curpeiceps), a territorial hummingbird, and of the Violet Sabrewing (Campylopterus hemileucurus), a traplining hummingbird, to assess the impact on number of aggressive chases and foraging success of hummingbirds at feeders. Sit-and-wait predators have many strategies to deal with food scarcity. Some predators become more active, while others conserve energy by becoming more sedentary. I decided to test the effects that starvation has on the larval antlion Myrmeleon crudelis. Myrmeleon crudelis build pit-traps, conical structures built in sand, to capture prey. These pit-traps vary in diameter, depth, and angle for each larva. Seven individuals in one group were fed every other day, while seven other individuals were starved for all ten days this study took place. Ten recently fallen trees in the Lower Montane Wet Forest (1550-1650 m) and Lower Montane Rain Forest (1650 m to 1800 m) of Monteverde, Puntarenas, Costa Rica were each divided into four zones based on tree architecture. Each zone theoretically represents differences in substrate and abiotic conditions: Zone 1 was the main trunk, Zone 2 the inner third of the canopy, Zone 3 the second third of the canopy, and Zone 4 the outer-most third of the canopy. Resource allocation theory in plants dictates that resources utilized for one physiological process are unavailable for another, and that plants must selectively allocate critical resources in order to maximize their fitness. Therefore, resources allocated to reproductive growth are unavailable for vegetative growth and vice versa. The relationship between vegetative and reproductive growth was examined for a common Piper species found in San Luis, Monteverde, Costa Rica by comparing the size of leaves with opposing inflorescences on the same node to the size of leaves without opposing inflorescences on the same node. Optimal foraging helps maximize fitness of the disperser and corresponding plant. Fruiting strategies may influence foraging success in order to increase seed dispersal rate. This study examines the spatial dispersion of fruits and its influence on foraging time of frugivorous bats. Five bat species in captivity at the Bat Jungle in Monteverde, Costa Rica, including Carollia brevicauda and Artibeus toltecus, are used to test the foraging time on three spatial arrangements, uniform, random and clumped, using a natural food source, Solanum umbellatum (Solanaceae). Natural killer (NK) cells derived from the human female reproductive tract (FRT) are phenotypically and functionally distinct from those obtained from peripheral blood. Because the FRT is a primary site of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection in women, we determined whether soluble factors secreted by uterine-derived NK (uNK) cells inhibit HIV-1 infection. Clonal populations of uNK cells were activated with interleukin-12 (IL-12) and IL-15, and conditioned media (CM) from these cultures evaluated for their ability to inhibit infection of cells by HIV-1IIIB, HIV-1NL4.3, and HIV-1HC4 (X4-tropic) or HIV-1BaL (R5-tropic) viruses. Populasi warga emas di Malaysia akan meningkat kepada 21% iaitu bersamaan dengan 7.9 juta warga emas menjelang tahun 2050. Pada tahun 2005, Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia mendapati seramai 27% warga emas ini menghidap penyakit darah tinggi, manakala penyakit jantung dan diabetes mencatatkan peratusan sebanyak 16% dan 12% masing-masing. Hydrothermal treatment is traditionally employed to improve the sinterability of powder compacts by reducing porosity and increasing apparent density. The effect of hydrothermal treatment on green powder compacts has been assessed in order to better understand how treatment may affect the sinter ability of the bodies. Laboratory synthesized nano sized hydroxyapatite (HA) and a commercial zirconia (ZrO2) powder have been ball milled together to create composite mixtures containing 0-5 wt% ZrO2 loadings. Although personality disorders are best understood in the context of lifetime development, there is a paucity of work examining their longitudinal trajectory. An understanding of the expected course and the genetic and environmental contributions to these disorders is necessary for a detailed understanding of risk processes that lead to their manifestation. The current study examined the longitudinal course and heritability of borderline personality disorder (BPD) over a period of 10 years starting in adolescence (age 14) and ending in adulthood (age 24).
