Antioxidant activity of nine seaweeds, two microalgae, two teas, two dried fruit skins and one dried flower were determined. Among the seaweeds extracts, Sargassum binderi showed the highest AOx (antioxidant activity) for its boiled water extract in both AEAC (ascorbic acid equivalence antioxidant capacity) and DPPH (Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrate) assays. Methanolic extracts of Sargassum binderi and Padina tetrastromatica showed the highest AOx in DPPH and AEAC assays respectively. Gracilaria changii showed the highest AOx for its methanolic extract in Galvinoxyl assay. Boiled water extract of Padina tetrastromatica showed the highest total phenolic content in Total Phenolic assay. The two microalgae tested were …

All the metal complexes in this study are synthesized by the general method which the ligand was first prepared by refluxing the precursors of the Schiff base. It was then followed by the addition of the appropriate metal salt to form metal complexes. The characterization of the series of the Schiff base complexes of Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II) with ligand systems containing nitrogen, sulphur and oxygen donor atoms were also carried out. Formation of the Schiff base ligands were confirmed by the presence of v(C=N) band at the range 1550-1650 cm-1 in the IR spectra. In some cases the …

A total of 25 experiments were conducted to test the effect of several factors such as hormone types and concentrations, incubation periods, subcultures, medium states, sucrose, pH, explants size, explants density and medium volume per culture and medium strength on the shoot formation per explant, total shoots, total cost and cost per shoot of Smooth cayenne and Moris pineapple at each and over 4 consecutive subcultures. Biodiesel, defined as the alkyl esters (usually methyl esters) of vegetable oils, is miscible with conventional petroleum diesel fuel at all blend levels. Blends of biodiesel with conventional petroleum diesel fuel represent a common utilization of biodiesel. The Malaysian Government has initiated the implementation of palm biodiesel since 2007 and the proposed blend is B5. Accordingly, there is interest and need for the development of methods for determining or verifying the blend level of biodiesel in petroleum diesel. In this study, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi (S. Typhi) strains collected from outbreak and sporadic cases of typhoid fever during the years 1998 to 2007 in Malaysia were characterized using three PCR-based methods, i.e., restricted arbitrarily primed PCR (resAP-PCR), repetitive element PCR (rep-PCR) and variable-number tandem repeat (VNTR) analysis. RNA interference is currently a widely used technique for gene silencing studies in several plant and animal systems. In this study a rapid and inexpensive RNAi technique was used for manipulation of endogenous gene expression in Dendrobium orchids using large quantities of dsRNA which were synthesized in HT115 E. coli. A partial cDNA clone of the MYB9 gene was isolated from Dendrobium Sonia flowers and this was confirmed by sequencing and local alignment analysis using BLAST. The biocompatibility and potential osteoconductive properties of medium-chain-length polyhydroxyalkanoates (mcl-PHA) in bone was investigated using the rabbit mandible as the animal model. The PHA was produced by a bacteria Pseudomonas putida using saponified palm kernel oil (SPKO) as carbon source. Twelve New Zealand white rabbits weighing between 2.5 kg to 3.5 kg were used. Twenty four of full thickness critical size (15 mm × 10 mm) defects were created in rabbit mandibles bilaterally. In vitro regeneration of Begonia x hiemalis Fotsch. cv. Schwabenland Red, also known as Begonia Rose, an ornamental plant was achieved from four different intact explants; such as leaf, peduncle, petiole and stem explants. The sterilization protocol was established for in vivo explants to overcome contamination. The results revealed that four different types of explants could produce in vitro regeneration. Leaf and petiole explants were amongst the best explants that were observed in this study. The optimum regeneration medium was identified in this study, i.e. MS medium supplemented with 1.0 mg/l BAP and 1.0 mg/l NAA which produced normal shoots. …

Per capita generation of municipal solid waste (MSW) in Malaysia has reached 1.3kg per day giving a total generation of more than 31000 tonnes daily. All the MSW collected are disposed into 260 landfills or dumps with 90% of the landfills being non-sanitary. Due to lack of proper gas collection facilities, almost all the methane produced are released passively to the atmosphere.Malaysian landfills produce 1.3-7.5 L/kg/year of methane gas. Since methane is 23 times more harmful as greenhouse gas than CO2, it is essential to mitigate its emission from landfills. One option to reduce methane emissions is to oxidize the …

Actinomycetes are widespread in marine ecosystem. They are of interest in research field as they are capable to produce bioactive secondary metabolites which can be developed into useful pharmaceutical products. An example of the product is antibiotics which can be used to treat infectious diseases. The potential of antibacterial and antifungal activity of eleven marine derived actinomycetes from the genus Streptomyces were studied. This work is focused on studying the influence of temperature, concentration, shearing time and storage time on the rheological properties, i.e., the dynamic viscosity and shear stress as a function of shear rate of chitosan solubilized in the three selected solvents.Results showed that within the temperature range we studied (20oC to 50oC), apronounced shear thinning was observed. It was also found that all the solutions obeyed the Arrhenius equation. The study was conducted to assess the extent of pollution in Sungai Pencala. A total of 14 monitoring stations were established along the river. The selected sampling stations represented the various activities in the surroundings of Sungai Pencala. Samplings were conducted 12 times over a period of 16 months from March 2006 – June 2007. The study was conducted to determine if environmental education camp has an effect on the level of knowledge and attitude regarding wetlands. The result of this study was based on a questionnaire survey of pre-test and post-test groups which consisted of 206 students, who attended the education camp.
