Beyond Lawrence V. Texas: Crafting A Fundamental Right To Sexual Privacy, Kristin Fasullo Jan 2009

Beyond Lawrence V. Texas: Crafting A Fundamental Right To Sexual Privacy, Kristin Fasullo

Fordham Law Review

After the watershed 2003 U.S. Supreme Court decision Lawrence v. Texas, courts are faced with the daunting task of navigating the bounds of sexual privacy in light of Lawrence’s sweeping language and unconventional structure. This Note focuses on the specific issue of state governments regulating sexual device distribution. Evaluating the substantive due process rights of sexual device retailers and users, this Note ultimately argues that the privacy interest identified in Lawrence is sufficiently broad to protect intimate decisions to engage in adult consensual sexual behavior, including the liberty to sell, purchase, and use a sexual device.

Direct Binding Of Cytosolic Ndp Kinases To Membrane Lipids Is Regulated By Nucleotides, Kimberly A. P. Mitchell, Gabor Szabo, Angela De S . Otero Jan 2009

Direct Binding Of Cytosolic Ndp Kinases To Membrane Lipids Is Regulated By Nucleotides, Kimberly A. P. Mitchell, Gabor Szabo, Angela De S . Otero

Faculty Publications and Presentations

In spite of their complete lack of any structural features that characterize membrane proteins, cytosolic nucleoside-diphosphate kinases (NDPKs) have been found repeatedly to associate with membranes. In some instances the recruitment of cytosolic NDPKs to membranes was attributed to interactions with peripheral or integral membrane proteins, but in many cases the mechanism underlying the association of NDPKs with membranes remained unknown. We show here that cytosolic NDPKs bind directly to membrane lipids in a dynamic process that is controlled by its substrates, nucleoside tri- and diphosphates, and can be fully reconstituted with chemically defined, protein-free phospholipids and recombinant NDPK, or …

Methods For The Isolation Of Sensory And Primary Cilia—An Overview, Kimberly A. P. Mitchell, Gabor Szabo, Angela De S. Otero Jan 2009

Methods For The Isolation Of Sensory And Primary Cilia—An Overview, Kimberly A. P. Mitchell, Gabor Szabo, Angela De S. Otero

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Detailed proteomic analyses of mammalian olfactory and rod photoreceptor sensory cilia are now available, providing an inventory of resident ciliary proteins and laying the foundation for future studies of developmental and spatio-temporal changes in the composition of sensory cilia. Cilia purification methods that were elaborated and perfected over several decades were essential for these advances. In contrast, the proteome of primary cilia is yet to be established, because purification procedures for this organelle have been developed only recently. In this chapter we review current techniques for the purification of olfactory and photoreceptor cilia, and evaluate methods designed for the selective …

The Effect Of Plant-Soil Feedback And Competition On The Invasion Of New Hampshire Thickets By Non-Native Shrubs, Kristina Vagos Jan 2009

The Effect Of Plant-Soil Feedback And Competition On The Invasion Of New Hampshire Thickets By Non-Native Shrubs, Kristina Vagos

Master's Theses and Capstones

Early-successional habitat is disappearing throughout the northeastern United States. Much of the remaining habitat is being invaded by non-native invasive shrubs suspected of altering native shrubland quality. To assess whether soil feedback and competition facilitate invasion, three native and three invasive shrub species were used in two greenhouse experiments. Soil feedback was examined by growing each species in soil cultured by the same species and those cultured by other species, in both tilled and non-tilled soil. Soil microbial communities were assessed using PLFA. Soil feedback effects were species specific and likely do not facilitate invasion. Additionally, cultured soil communities were …

N-Linked Glycans Characterization And Biomarker Discovery By Sequential Mass Spectrometry, Hongqin (Jenny) Jiao Jan 2009

N-Linked Glycans Characterization And Biomarker Discovery By Sequential Mass Spectrometry, Hongqin (Jenny) Jiao

Master's Theses and Capstones

N-linked glycans from a well-studied glycoprotein, (hen albumin) were characterized using ion trap MS (MSn) without chromatographic separation. From the spectral profile, ten major ion compositions were selected for study, which resulted in the characterization of 37 isomeric structures, 16 of which were previously unreported. These findings were compared with previously reported studies using different analytical strategies: IMMS, MS/MS. MSn not only identifies but also structurally characterizes components in the absence of any adjunct instrumentation. Selected examples have been detailed.

A major challenge for adult stem cell (ASC) research is the lack of specific biomarkers for their identification and isolation. …

Assessing Post Treatment Aeration Variables To Reduce Trihalomethanes For Small Systems, Ethan S. Brooke Jan 2009

Assessing Post Treatment Aeration Variables To Reduce Trihalomethanes For Small Systems, Ethan S. Brooke

Master's Theses and Capstones

Small Public Water Systems face unique challenges in meeting Stage I & II disinfection byproduct rules. Diffused and spray aeration offer significant advantages in installation and O&M costs for small communities that need to lower THMs in finished drinking water. In this study, bench and pilot aeration assessments were undertaken in order to evaluate the importance and interaction of aeration variables associated with Trihalomethane (THM) and specifically chloroform removal. Bench scale experiments to determine the effect of air stripping on free chlorine levels and water pH were also conducted.

Fecal Glucocorticoids Reflect Socio-Ecological And Anthropogenic Stressors In The Lives Of Wild Spotted Hyenas, Heather E. Watts Jan 2009

Fecal Glucocorticoids Reflect Socio-Ecological And Anthropogenic Stressors In The Lives Of Wild Spotted Hyenas, Heather E. Watts

Biology Faculty Works

Our aim was to identify natural and anthropogenic influences on the stress physiology of large African carnivores, using wild spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta) as model animals. With both longitudinal data from a single social group, and cross-sectional data from multiple groups, we used fecal glucocorticoids (fGC) to examine potential stressors among spotted hyenas. Longitudinal data from adult members of a group living on the edge of the Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya, revealed that fGC concentrations were elevated during two periods of social upheaval among adults, especially among younger females; however, prey availability, rainfall, and presence of lions did not …
