The side chain of a compound plays an important role in its biological function. In our studies, we have found that hydroximinosteroid derivatives with different side chains and position of hydroximino on ring A and B displayed remarkable distinct cytotoxicities against a diversity of cancer cell types. Presence of an oxime group on ring B and a hydroxy on ring A or B resulted in a higher cytotoxicity than other structural motifs. In addition, a cholesterol-type side chain at position 17 was required for the biological activity. Our findings provide new evidence showing the relationship between the chemical structure and …

Is Competitive Behavior Controlled By Its Consequences? The Effects Of Omission Training On Competitive Behavior In Rats, Melinda Mallory, '09 Jan 2009

Is Competitive Behavior Controlled By Its Consequences? The Effects Of Omission Training On Competitive Behavior In Rats, Melinda Mallory, '09

Honors Projects

Recent research has examined competitive behavior in rats. When multiple rats are placed in an open field with a single feeder delivering pellets on a Variable Interval Schedule, the rats typically engage in a competitive wrestling response near the feeder tube. This response has been observed in several different experiments, but little is known about its specific nature. One possibility is that the response is a traditional operant. Although there is no explicit contingency with reinforcement, rats that do not engage in the response are unlikely to consume pellets. Alternatively, the competitive response might represent a species-specific foraging mode, controlled …

The Effects Of Medial Septal Modification On The Theta Rhythm Of The Amygdala, Colleen E. Mcshane, '09 Jan 2009

The Effects Of Medial Septal Modification On The Theta Rhythm Of The Amygdala, Colleen E. Mcshane, '09

Honors Projects

The theta rhythm is a 3- 1 2 Hz electroencephalographic (EEG) oscillatory phenomenon that has been recorded from the hippocampus of small animals during large motor movements, periods of arousal, and memory tasks. Theta denotes the amount of brain synchrony occurring, with higher theta amplitude corresponding to more synchrony among individual neurons. The proposed pacemaker of the hippocampal theta rhythm is the medial septal area (MSA), which consists of neurons that fire rhythmically in frequencies corresponding to the theta rhythm. Despite the proven physical connection between the MSA and the amygdala, there is uncertainty as to whether the MSA serves …

Why Can't We Be Friends?: The Effects Of Disclosure And Severity On Typical Students' Attitudes Toward Peers With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Jacqueline M. Dowjotas, '09 Jan 2009

Why Can't We Be Friends?: The Effects Of Disclosure And Severity On Typical Students' Attitudes Toward Peers With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Jacqueline M. Dowjotas, '09

Honors Projects

The autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are characterized by deficits in social interaction, communication, and restrictive and repetitive behaviors and interests. Although many children with autism desire social interaction, they tend to have a difficult time mastering conversation skills and socially appropriate behavior. In addition, they have fewer and lower quality friendships when compared to typical peers, and they often face negative stigma from their typical peers. The current study was used to investigate typical students' attitudes toward hypothetical peers with varying degrees of ASDs. Participants (N = 61) read and responded to vignettes that depicted adolescents, in which severity of …

Green Chemistry Using Bismuth Compounds: Bismuth(Iii) Triflate Catalyzed Allylation Of Cyclic Acetals, Matthew J. Spafford, '09 Jan 2009

Green Chemistry Using Bismuth Compounds: Bismuth(Iii) Triflate Catalyzed Allylation Of Cyclic Acetals, Matthew J. Spafford, '09

Honors Projects

Cyclic acetals (dioxolanes, dioxanes, and dithianes) are common protecting groups in organic synthesis but they can also be converted to other useful functional groups. A bismuth(III) triflate-catalyzed multi component reaction involving the allylation of cyclic acetals followed by in situ derivatization with acid anhydrides to generate highly functionalized esters and thioesters has been developed under solvent-free conditions. Most reagents used to date for the allylation of cyclic acetals are highly corrosive or toxic and are often required in stoichiometric amounts. In contrast, the use of a relatively non-toxic and non-corrosive bismuth(III) based catalyst makes this methodology benign and attractive.

Determining The Future Income Of College Students, Paul Oehrlein, '09 Jan 2009

Determining The Future Income Of College Students, Paul Oehrlein, '09

Honors Projects

Many people invest a lot of money in order to go to college with the hope that they will eventually be rewarded with higher salaries. This paper attempts to determine what aspects of college are most important in determining the future income of students. In particular, this paper studies whether GPA is an important determinant of income as well as whether some majors are better investments than others after controlling for other factors. In addition, the effect of math and verbal ability on income and how they interact with different fields of study are studied. The data comes from the …

Predicting Major League Talent Through The First-Year Player Draft, Kevin Slattery, '09 Jan 2009

Predicting Major League Talent Through The First-Year Player Draft, Kevin Slattery, '09

Honors Projects

The Major League Baseball first-year player draft is a relatively unexplored topic. Until two years ago it was not even televised, even though other major spoils drafts like basketball and football are major television events. I predict the probability of reaching the major leagues and the probability of a player "making it big" in the major leagues for a player drafted based on a series of variables, like draft position, whether a player is lefthanded, and the schooling the amateur has received. This should help a team determine which players are most risky, and which players are most likely to …

Adopted Children"S Outcome As Young Adults In Regards To Educational Attainment And Income, Nicole K. Spear, '09 Jan 2009

Adopted Children"S Outcome As Young Adults In Regards To Educational Attainment And Income, Nicole K. Spear, '09

Honors Projects

This study explains the differences between the outcomes for children adopted by the age of two in comparison to biologically raised children using the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth. It analyzes the educational attainment and income earned through a competing effects framework. The Family Background Effect measures the positive effects caused by higher than average socioeconomic status of the average family with adopted children. The Family Background Effect contrasted with the negative Adoption Effect caused by a number of different factors that could work against an adopted child. Using linear regression analysis, the study finds that the Family Background Effect …

Differential Ligand Binding To A Human Cytomegalovirus Chemokine Receptor Determines Cell Type-Specific Motility, Jennifer Totonchy, Ryan Melnychuk, Patricia P. Smith, Joshua Powell, Laurel Hall, Victor R. Defilippis, Klaus Fruh, Martine Smit, David D. Schlaepfer, Jay A. Nelson, Daniel N. Streblow

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

While most chemokine receptors fail to cross the chemokine class boundary with respect to the ligands that they bind, the human cytomegalovirus (HCMV)-encoded chemokine receptor US28 binds multiple CC-chemokines and the CX3Cchemokine Fractalkine. US28 binding to CC-chemokines is both necessary and sufficient to induce vascular smooth muscle cell (SMC) migration in response to HCMV infection. However, the function of Fractalkine binding to US28 is unknown. In this report, we demonstrate that Fractalkine binding to US28 not only induces migration of macrophages but also acts to inhibit RANTES-mediated SMC migration. Similarly, RANTES inhibits Fractalkine-mediated US28 migration in macrophages. While US28 binding …

Energy Decomposition Analysis Of Covalent Bonds And Intermolecular Interactions, Peifeng Su, Hui Li Jan 2009

Energy Decomposition Analysis Of Covalent Bonds And Intermolecular Interactions, Peifeng Su, Hui Li

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

An energy decomposition analysis method is implemented for the analysis of both covalent bonds and intermolecular interactions on the basis of single-determinant Hartree–Fock (HF) (restricted closed shell HF, restricted open shell HF, and unrestricted open shell HF) wavefunctions and their density functional theory analogs. For HF methods, the total interaction energy from a supermolecule calculation is decomposed into electrostatic, exchange, repulsion, and polarization terms. Dispersion energy is obtained from second-order Møller–Plesset perturbation theory and coupled-cluster methods such as CCSD and CCSD(T). Similar to the HF methods, Kohn–Sham density functional interaction energy is decomposed into electrostatic, exchange, repulsion, polarization, and dispersion …

The Unabomber Revisited: Reexamining The Use Of Mental Disorder Diagnoses As Evidence Of The Mental Condition Of Criminal Defendants, Adam K. Magid Jan 2009

The Unabomber Revisited: Reexamining The Use Of Mental Disorder Diagnoses As Evidence Of The Mental Condition Of Criminal Defendants, Adam K. Magid

Indiana Law Journal

This Article revisits a longstanding debate concerning the appropriateness of diagnostic evidence in criminal cases in which a defendant’s mental condition is at issue. As illustrated through a case study of Theodore Kaczynski, more widely known as the “Unabomber,” a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia poses a risk of confounding a judge or jury attempting to ascertain an accurate picture of the mental state of a criminal defendant, specifically by (i) suggesting symptoms not actually present, (ii) creating a distorted picture of symptoms that are present, and (iii) suggesting organic, determinative factors as the mechanism behind a defendant’s actions, even where …

A method and kit for immobilization of a glycoprotein. The method may include activating an affinity Support. The affinity Support may be activated by reacting the affinity Support with a compound that is reactive with one or more functional groups included within the glycoprotein. The method may also include oxidizing the glycoprotein in which oxidation conditions are selected to yield an oxidized glycoprotein that is biologically active and contains a Sufficient number of reactive aldehyde groups for coupling to a Support. For example, the oxidized glycoprotein may include five reactive aldehyde groups. In addition, the method may include reacting the …

Heterogeneous Conductorlike Solvation Model, Hui Li, Dejun Si Jan 2009

Heterogeneous Conductorlike Solvation Model, Hui Li, Dejun Si

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

A heterogeneous conductorlike solvation model (conductorlike screening model/conductorlike polarizable continuum model) that uses different local effective dielectrics for different portions of the solute cavity surface is implemented for quantum chemical Hartree–Fock and Kohn–Sham methods. A variational treatment is used to form the heterogeneous solvation operator, so a simple analytic expression of the energy gradients, which are vital for geometry optimization and molecular dynamics simulation, is derived and implemented. Using the new Fixed Points with Variable Areas surface tessellation scheme, continuous and smooth potential energy surfaces as well as analytic gradients are obtained for this heterogeneous model.

Escaping The Island Of Lost Faculty: Collaboration As A Means Of Visibility, Anthony J. Fonseca, Van P. Viator Jan 2009

Escaping The Island Of Lost Faculty: Collaboration As A Means Of Visibility, Anthony J. Fonseca, Van P. Viator

Collaborative Librarianship

Academic librarians are often physically and intellectually isolated at their institutions, and they need to accept much of the blame. Professional literature shows that librarians continue to argue against the responsibilities of tenure, despite the fact that in two of the three usual rubrics of tenure and promotion—namely publication and service—the expectations for both teaching faculty and librarians are generally the same. In addition, academic librarians will not be treated equally unless they begin to think and work outside of the physical academic library. This article argues for a multidisciplinary approach to academic librarianship, with an emphasis on collaboration as …
