Assessing Essential Fish Habitat And Connectivity Using Otolith Chemistry And Growth Of Temperate And Tropical Fish, Ivan Mateo Jan 2009

Assessing Essential Fish Habitat And Connectivity Using Otolith Chemistry And Growth Of Temperate And Tropical Fish, Ivan Mateo

Open Access Dissertations

Many shallow water habitats are vulnerable to loss or deterioration from a variety of processes, including erosion, pollution, and urbanization. Conservation of these 'nursery' habitats protects an important source of young individuals to offshore adult fish populations. The first part of this dissertation investigates whether young-of-the year (YOY) tautog Tautoga onitis, French grunt Haemulon flavolineatum, and schoolmaster Lutjanus apodus from different nursery habitats can be distinguished by chemical signatures in their otoliths. Concentrations of ten elements, as well as stable oxygen (18O) and carbon (13C) isotopes, were determined in otoliths. Chemical signatures differed significantly among fish from different nurseries (MANOVA …

Characterization Of N-Acetylglucosamine Utilization By The Lyme Disease Spirochete, Borrelia Burgdorferi, Ryan Gregory Rhodes Jan 2009

Characterization Of N-Acetylglucosamine Utilization By The Lyme Disease Spirochete, Borrelia Burgdorferi, Ryan Gregory Rhodes

Open Access Dissertations

Borrelia burgdorferi is the causative agent of Lyme disease, the most common vector-borne disease in the United States. This spirochete is maintained exclusively within an enzootic cycle and alternates between a tick vector (Ixodes species) and vertebrate host. The organism has limited biosynthetic capabilities and must obtain many essential nutrients from its surrounding environment. One such nutrient is N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc), a component of peptidoglycan which forms the rigid layer of the microbial cell wall. B. burgdorferi can import GlcNAc as a monomer through one of several glucose transporters or as a dimer (chitobiose) through a dedicated phosphotransferase system (PTS). Despite …

Pyrethroid Resistance In The Annual Bluegrass Weevil, Listronotus Maculicollis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), From Southern New England Golf Courses, Darryl Ramoutar Jan 2009

Pyrethroid Resistance In The Annual Bluegrass Weevil, Listronotus Maculicollis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), From Southern New England Golf Courses, Darryl Ramoutar

Open Access Dissertations

The annual bluegrass weevil, Listronotus maculicollis Kirby (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), has emerged as a serious pest of Poa annua L. (Poales: Poaceae) (annual bluegrass), in the Northeastern US. In 2007, topical application bioassays of bifenthrin and λ-cyhalothrin conducted on field-collected populations of L. maculicollis Kirby from eight southern New England golf courses resulted in LD50 ranges of 1.80-244.67 ng/insect and 0.52-159.53 ng/insect for bifenthrin and λ-cyhalothrin respectively. These results revealed low to high levels of resistance to bifenthrin (6.1-135.9 fold) and λ-cyhalothrin (28.7-306.8 fold), possibly due to insecticide overuse. In 2008, topical application bioassays with bifenthrin and bifenthrin plus synergists affecting …

Conservation Genetics Of Association Of Zoos And Aquariums And Wild Matshie's Tree Kangaroo (Dendrolagus Matschiei) From Huon Peninsula, Papua New Guinea, Thomas Joseph Mcgreevy Jr. Jan 2009

Conservation Genetics Of Association Of Zoos And Aquariums And Wild Matshie's Tree Kangaroo (Dendrolagus Matschiei) From Huon Peninsula, Papua New Guinea, Thomas Joseph Mcgreevy Jr.

Open Access Dissertations

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Matschie's tree kangaroo (Dendrolagus matschiei) population is at a critical point for assessing long-term viability; they have endured a founder effect and have low mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) diversity. The mean kinship (MK) strategy is used to preserve their genetic diversity by minimizing the overall kinship of the population; however, the MK strategy has not been evaluated in an AZA population. Wild D. matschiei is listed as endangered and genetically unique populations may warrant management as separate conservation units. My objectives were to: (i) develop molecular markers to facilitate genetic analyses, (ii) assist AZA …

A New Age Of Goddess Worship In New Wave Feminism : Witch Way Forward? : A Qualitative Study, Joanne Kostopoulos-Riganello Jan 2009

A New Age Of Goddess Worship In New Wave Feminism : Witch Way Forward? : A Qualitative Study, Joanne Kostopoulos-Riganello

Theses : Honours

This research investigates the question: Are women who are currently engaged in a Goddess religion, such as Wicca, practising a new wave of feminism, one that has its roots in a uniquely female order? This is grounded in a qualitative interpretive paradigm, using a feminist poststructuralist methodology. A comprehensive literature review was undertaken, drawing on relevant material from the areas related to the topics of the Goddess, feminism, thealogy, witches and Wicca. Five High Priestesses of Wicca were interviewed using one-on-one unstructured interview techniques. All five interviews were guided by open-ended questions focussed on participants' experiences and perceptions of Goddess …

Children's Exposure To Lead And Nickel In Esperance - A Case Study, Matthew Tristan Winters Jan 2009

Children's Exposure To Lead And Nickel In Esperance - A Case Study, Matthew Tristan Winters

Theses : Honours

This is a cross-sectional study of lead and nickel exposure of children aged 2-12 years living at varying distances from a point source of pollution in Esperance. Esperance was an ideal case study location because of previous environmental contamination with lead and nickel above background levels. Non-invasive biological samples of hair, toenails and urine were collected from participating children, and environmental samples, including house dust, soil and drinking water were also sampled from each participant household. Exposure was assessed by measuring the concentration of metals found in the biological samples, and determining their relationships with the environmental samples from each …

Exposing The Myth Of Homo Economicus, Ronald J. Colombo Jan 2009

Exposing The Myth Of Homo Economicus, Ronald J. Colombo

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The prevalence of the "homo economicus" model of humanity has crowded out considerations of important non-economic aspects of human nature - most importantly, the moral dimension of human thought and conduct. As a result, our understanding of the present ills besetting the business world and the market economy is incomplete, and the policy prescriptions flowing therefrom are often suboptimal (if not counterproductive).

This book review situates Moral Markets within this larger debate over human nature generally. I show how, through the presentation of biological evidence and evolutionary theory, Moral Markets repudiates the "homo economicus" model of humankind, and supports the …

Pregnancy, Work, And The Promise Of Equal Citizenship, Joanna L. Grossman Jan 2009

Pregnancy, Work, And The Promise Of Equal Citizenship, Joanna L. Grossman

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Can women capture the benefits of equal citizenship in a legal system that does not mandate necessary accommodations for pregnant workers? This article argues that current pregnancy discrimination law, which bases the right to work on full capacity, systematically deprives women of equal opportunity to make use of their innate capacities and talents in the workplace. This failure, in turn, compromises the quest for equal social citizenship - the right of equal access to paid work - that has been a cornerstone of the modern women’s movement.

This article first examines the nature and extent of conflicts between pregnancy and …

Bioactive Sphingolipids Mediate Apoptosis And Senescence In Human Pancreatic Cancer Cells, Evelyn I. Leon Jan 2009

Bioactive Sphingolipids Mediate Apoptosis And Senescence In Human Pancreatic Cancer Cells, Evelyn I. Leon

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Ceramide is a second messenger involved in apoptosis, cell differentiation, and growth arrest. We hypothesize that in tumor cells, insufficient sphingomyelin (SM) limits the amount of ceramide which can be generated for the probagation of the apoptotic signal resulting from treatment with chemotherapy. As a result, we postulated that exogenous SM will facilitate apoptosis and synergize with chemotherapeutic agents.

The current studies examined the response of the Panel human pancreatic cancer cell line to gemcitabine, a nucleoside analog, in the presence and absence of sub-toxic doses of SM. Cytotoxic dose response relationships demonstrated an increased chemosensitivity to gemcitabine with SM …

Establishing Public Health Security In A Postwar Iraq: Constitutional Obstacles And Lessons For Other Federalizing States, David P. Fidler, Kumanan Wilson, Christopher W. Mcdougall, Harvey Lazar

Articles by Maurer Faculty

The public health consequences of the conflict in Iraq will likely continue after the violence has subsided. Reestablishing public health security will require large investments in infrastructure and the creation of effective systems of governance. On the question of governance, the allocation of powers in the new constitution of Iraq is critical. Given the ease with which public health threats cross borders, the constitution needs to grant to the federal government the legal authority to manage such threats and simultaneously meet international requirements. Unfortunately, the draft constitution does not accomplish this objective. If politically possible, the constitution should be amended …

Island Method For Estimating The Statistical Significance Of Profile-Profile Alignment Scores, Aleksandar Poleksic Jan 2009

Island Method For Estimating The Statistical Significance Of Profile-Profile Alignment Scores, Aleksandar Poleksic

Faculty Work

Background: In the last decade, a significant improvement in detecting remote similarity between protein sequences has been made by utilizing alignment profiles in place of amino-acid strings. Unfortunately, no analytical theory is available for estimating the significance of a gapped alignment of two profiles. Many experiments suggest that the distribution of local profile-profile alignment scores is of the Gumbel form. However, estimating distribution parameters by random simulations turns out to be computationally very expensive.

Results: We demonstrate that the background distribution of profile-profile alignment scores heavily depends on profiles' composition and thus the distribution parameters must be estimated …

Gender-Benders': Sex And Law In The Constitution Of Polluted Bodies, Dayna Nadine Scott Jan 2009

Gender-Benders': Sex And Law In The Constitution Of Polluted Bodies, Dayna Nadine Scott

Articles & Book Chapters

This paper explores how law might conceive of the injury or harm of endocrine disruption as it applies to an aboriginal community experiencing chronic chemical pollution. The effect of the pollution in this case is not only gendered, but gendering: it seems to be causing the ‘production’ of two girl babies for every boy born on the reserve. This presents an opening to interrogate how law is implicated in the constitution of not just gender but sex. The analysis takes an embodied turn, attempting to validate the real and material consequences of synthetic chemicals acting on bodies — but uncovers …

‘Community’, Semiotic Flows, And Mediated Contribution To Activity, Steven L. Thorne Jan 2009

‘Community’, Semiotic Flows, And Mediated Contribution To Activity, Steven L. Thorne

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article begins with an overview and problematization of the term community through a brief assessment of its history, diverse uses, core attributes, heterogeneous elements, and collocational companions. Following this, I describe demographics and processes associated with collective engagement in digitally mediated environments. Utilizing select alternatives to the term ‘community’ and incorporating the cultural-historical notions of mediation and activity, I then present research describing exogenous influences affecting educational uses of technology in L2 settings, the use of instant messaging and blogging for out-of-class FL interaction at the secondary school level, and a pedagogically focused example of a remixing text posted …

A Natural History Of The Mind : Edwards, Emerson, Thoreau, Melville, Michael Edmund Jonik

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This project examines how eighteenth- and nineteenth-century American writers drew on European natural science and philosophy - specifically in terms of concepts of form, perception, and experience - to open new possibilities for thinking the relationship between the mind and the physical world. In each of the moments of American intellectual history here considered - the natural theology of Calvinism, the idealistic natural history of Transcendentalism, and the movement towards an evolutionary process-philosophy of Pragmatism - "place" becomes not only geographical location, but a dynamic field of interactions of natural historical, literary, theological, and philosophical knowledge. I trace this through …

Doubly Curved Crystal Optics For Monochromatic And Diffraction Enhanced X-Ray Imaging, Santosh Kumar Sahoo

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In radiographic imaging the contrast can be enhanced with the use of monochromatic radiation compared to conventional broadband source. Monochromatic beam radiation can be produced with conventional sources by diffraction off of flat monochromator crystals, but this produces a low monochromatic intensity for imaging.

Generation And Maintenance Of Protective Igm Responses During Intracellular Bacterial Infection, Rachael Denise Racine Jan 2009

Generation And Maintenance Of Protective Igm Responses During Intracellular Bacterial Infection, Rachael Denise Racine

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

It is widely accepted that IgM provides the first line of defense against during microbial infection prior to the generation of high-affinity, isotype-switched antibodies, which is the hallmark of long-lived lived immunity and immunological memory. The overall objective of these studies was to address the role of IgM in the generation and maintenance of protective immunity during intracellular bacterial infection. We have identified a population of CD11clo plasmablasts that were responsible for nearly all of the antigen-specific IgM production in the spleen. Moreover, selective depletion of the CD11c-expressing B cells during acute infection resulted in a complete loss in the …

A Study Of Cantilever-Free Instrumentation For Nanoscale Magnetic Measurements, Bruce Adair Altemus Jan 2009

A Study Of Cantilever-Free Instrumentation For Nanoscale Magnetic Measurements, Bruce Adair Altemus

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The evolution of the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) into the Magnetic Force Microscope (MFM) and Magnetic Resonance Force Microscope (MRFM) has had a substantial impact on the characterization of nanoscale phenomena. Detection of 10-17 Newtons per root Hertz has occurred with use of an ultra-sensitive cantilever along with optical interferometry methods within these geometries. The sensitivity of these platforms is dependent on the characteristics of the cantilever, where increased length and a low Young's modulus increase the force sensitivity (meters/Newtons). Using IC fabrication techniques, the realization of generating cantilevers with this sensitivity is feasible, but stress compensation layers are required …

Collaboration As Paradox : The Case Of The Patuxent River, Md Nutrient Control Strategy, Morris Bidjerano Jan 2009

Collaboration As Paradox : The Case Of The Patuxent River, Md Nutrient Control Strategy, Morris Bidjerano

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Collaboration has increasingly emerged in recent years as a new paradigm in public management. This collaborative trend, however, has contradicted the longstanding American political tradition of conflictual contestation of competing interests and adversarial legalism. Consequently, it has presented public managers with the challenge of dealing in reality with the "tensions between alternative forms of management practice" (Huxham and Vangen 2005, 245). In most accounts, watershed management has recently become a particularly active arena for that clash of opposing collaborative and conflictual managerial practices.

The Effects, Brain Targets, And Mechanisms Of Estradiol For Affective Behavior, Alicia Ann Walf Jan 2009

The Effects, Brain Targets, And Mechanisms Of Estradiol For Affective Behavior, Alicia Ann Walf

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Although estradiol (E2) has numerous effects in the central nervous system, this review will focus on addressing the effects of E2 on behaviors related to mood in women and animal models and include recent findings from our laboratory related to this topic. E2's anti-anxiety and anti-depressant-like effects may depend upon many factors (e.g. age, reproductive history/status, time in E2 deficient state before initiation of E2 therapy, regimen and dosing of E2, neuropsychiatric/stress history). First, evidence of how factors may alter responses to E2 in people and in animal models will be discussed. Second, interactions of E2 with the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis/stress …

Live-Cell Studies On Mitotic Slippage In Humans, Daniela A. Brito Jan 2009

Live-Cell Studies On Mitotic Slippage In Humans, Daniela A. Brito

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Checkpoints are regulatory pathways that control the order and timing of specific cell-cycle events. In the presence of unattached/weakly-attached kinetochores, the mitotic checkpoint (MC) arrests cells in mitosis by inhibiting the degradation of cyclin B, the regulatory subunit of Cdk1 (cyclin dependent kinase 1). Checkpoints do not arrest cells permanently, and escaping mitosis with an unsatisfied MC requires cyclin B/Cdk1 inactivation. In yeast, this occurs through an “adaptation” mechanism involving inhibitory phosphorylations and/or Cdk1-inhibitors. To determine how vertebrate cells escape mitosis when the MC cannot be satisfied I conducted live-cell imaging and immunofluorescence studies on nocodazole-treated rat kangaroo (PtK) and …
