The Public Land Manager In Collaborative Conservation Planing: A Comparative Analysis Of Three Case Studies In Montana, Lawrence Allen Byrd
The Public Land Manager In Collaborative Conservation Planing: A Comparative Analysis Of Three Case Studies In Montana, Lawrence Allen Byrd
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Collaborative Conservation Planning (CCP) has proven to create solutions to challenges many Montana and Americans face with protecting or restoring their natural resources and rural lifestyles from previous non-sustainable land use practices and rural land development. This planning model has proven to be successful when organized groups consisting of multiple stakeholders come together to find common ground and address decreased biodiversity, fragmented habitat, threatened traditional farming, timber, and ranching rural lifestyles through open space protection and restoration efforts. The Public Land Manager’s (PLM) part in the CCP process is seemingly important because of their influence and the unique and diverse …

Background: Seven-transmembrane region-containing receptors (7TMRs) play central roles in eukaryotic signal transduction. Due to their biomedical importance, thorough mining of 7TMRs from diverse genomes has been an active target of bioinformatics and pharmacogenomics research. The need for new and accurate 7TMR/GPCR prediction tools is paramount with the accelerated rate of acquisition of diverse sequence information. Currently available and often used protein classification methods (e.g., profile hidden Markov Models) are highly accurate for identifying their membership information among already known 7TMR subfamilies. However, these alignment-based methods are less effective for identifying remote similarities, e.g., identifying proteins from highly divergent or possibly …
Summer Burrows Of Ord's Kangaroo Rats (Dipodomys Ordii) In Western Nebraska: Food Content And Structure, Jeremy A. White
Summer Burrows Of Ord's Kangaroo Rats (Dipodomys Ordii) In Western Nebraska: Food Content And Structure, Jeremy A. White
Biology Faculty Publications
Extent of larder hoarding differs among species of kangaroo rats, and limited information is available for food stored in burrows by Ord's kangaroo rat (Dipodomys ordii)—the most widespread species of Dipodomys. I excavated 9 burrows recently used by adult D. ordii during summer in the Sandhill Region of Nebraska. I observed only small quantities of food stored in burrows. Eight of 9 burrows contained segments of sand dropseed (Sporobolus cryptandrus) in limited quantities. These segments consisted of upper leaves with fruits (containing seeds) housed in sheaths. My observations represent the first documentation of D. ordii storing food in burrows under …

Farming Systems Education: Case Study Of Swedish Test Pilots, Lennart Salomonsson, Anna Nilsson, Sofia Palmer, Adam Roigart, Charles A. Francis
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
We describe and analyze a pedagogical experiment that introduced a broad and holistic perspective on complete farming systems, systemic learning tools, and a participatory learning strategy at an early stage in agronomy education. The paper describes the adventure of three students, who came from a conventional agronomy program at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), who were frustrated with the lack of integrated approaches to the study of agricultural systems and a strong focus on molecular-level processes in their first year of education. They encountered a narrow focus in most courses and the overall curricula of agricultural education that …

Limits To Maize Productivity In The Western Corn-Belt: A Simulation Analysis For Fully Irrigated And Rainfed Conditions, Patricio Grassini, Haishun Yang, Kenneth G. Cassman
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Unlike the Central and Eastern U.S. Corn-Belt where maize is grown almost entirely under rainfed conditions, maize in the Western Corn-Belt is produced under both irrigated (3.2 million ha) and rainfed (4.1 million ha) conditions. Simulation modeling, regression, and boundary-function analysis were used to assess constraints to maize productivity in the Western Corn-Belt. Aboveground biomass, grain yield, and water balance were simulated for fully irrigated and rainfed crops, using 20-year weather records from 18 locations in combination with actual soil, planting date, plant population, and hybrid-maturity data. Mean values of meteorological variables were estimated for three growth periods (pre- and …

Molecular Decay Of The Tooth Gene Enamelin (Enam) Mirrors The Loss Of Enamel In The Fossil Record Of Placental Mammals, Robert Meredith, John Gatesy, William J. Murphy, Oliver A. Ryder, Mark S. Springer
Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Vestigial structures occur at both the anatomical and molecular levels, but studies documenting the co-occurrence of morphological degeneration in the fossil record and molecular decay in the genome are rare. Here, we use morphology, the fossil record, and phylogenetics to predict the occurrence of "molecular fossils" of the enamelin (ENAM) gene in four different orders of placental mammals (Tubulidentata, Pholidota, Cetacea, Xenarthra) with toothless and/or enamelless taxa. Our results support the "molecular fossil" hypothesis and demonstrate the occurrence of frameshift mutations and/or stop codons in all toothless and enamelless taxa. We then use a novel method based on selection intensity …

Sodium channels are fundamental signaling molecules in excitable cells, and are molecular targets for local anesthetic agents and intracellular free Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i). Two regions of NaV1.5 have been identified previously as [Ca2+]i-sensitive modulators of channel inactivation. These include a C-terminal IQ motif that binds calmodulin (CaM) in different modes depending on Ca2+ levels, and an immediately adjacent C-terminal EF-hand domain that directly binds Ca2+. Here we show that a mutation of the IQ domain (A1924T; Brugada Syndrome) that reduces CaM binding stabilizes NaV1.5 inactivation, similarly and more extensively than even reducing [Ca2+]i. Because the DIII-DIV linker is an essential structure …

Reciprocal crosses involving Solanum gilo Raddi, S. anguivi Lam. and S. macrocarpon L., subg. Leptostemonum (Dunal) Bitter sect. Melongena Dunal were produced in order to assess inherent nuclear and non-nuclear influences on hybrid fitness, the extent of genomic change, and species compatibility. Hybrids expressed intermediacy and overlaps in leaf, petiole, petal, and plant height dimensions. Maternal influence was dominant in growth habit, leaf shape and texture, flower colour, and fruit size, while paternal control was limited to fruit colour in Solanum gilo × S. macrocarpon. Pollen viability was reduced from 97.3%-86.5% in parents to 53.8%-20.5% in hybrids. S. gilo × …

Bioavailability Of Chlorantraniliprole And Indoxacarb To Eastern Subterranean Termites (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) In Various Soils, Neil A. Spomer, Shripat T. Kamble, Blair D. Siegfried
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
A laboratory study was conducted to determine the toxicity of indoxacarb and chlorantraniliprole to Eastern subterranean termites, Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar) (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) resulting from topical applications and exposure to treated soil. Soils with varying organic matter (0.57-3.64%) and chemical characteristics were used in termiticide bioassays. Lethal dose resulting from topical application indicated that chlorantraniliprole was two- to 11-foldmoretoxic than indoxacarb. Lethal concentration assays yielded opposite results where concentrations of indoxacarb in soil that caused either 50 or 90% mortality of R. flavipes workers at 48 and 144 h were two- to six-fold lower than chlorantraniliprole. The bioavailability of indoxacarb and …

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is a major pest of cultivated corn in North America and has recently begun to invade Europe. In addition to crop rotation, chemical control is an important option for D. v. virgifera management. However, resistance to chemical insecticides has evolved repeatedly in the USA. In Europe, chemical control strategies have yet to be harmonized and no surveys of insecticide resistance have been carried out. We investigated the resistance to methyl-parathion and aldrin of samples from nine D. v. virgifera field populations originating from two European outbreaks thought to have originated …

Apparent Hybridization Between Trimerotropis Agrestis And Trimerotropis Maritima (Orthoptera: Acrididae) In A Recently Disturbed Habitat, Mathew L. Brust, W. Wyatt Hoback, Robert J. Wright
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
In Nebraska, the ranges of Trimerotropis maritima (eastern species) and T. agrestis (western species) overlap but populations usually remain separated by habitat preferences. The morphological and color differences between the species are described. However, around Lake McConaughy, a reservoir on the North Platte River which has declined markedly in depth as a result of recent drought, a habitat was created in which the two species coincide and hybridize frequently. The water level in this reservoir had dropped in excess of 20 meters as of 2007, resulting in large expanses of dunes grading into beach habitats. Grasshoppers were collected in the …

Is Seagrass An Important Nursery Habitat For The Caribbean Spiny Lobster, Panulirus Argus, In Florida?, Donald C. Behringer, Mark J. Butler Iv, William Herrnkind, John H. Hunt, Charles A. Acosta, William C. Sharp
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Caribbean spiny lobster (Panulirus argus) settle preferentially in macroalgal-covered hard-bottom habitat, but seagrass is more prevalent in Florida (United States) and the Caribbean, so even low settlement of lobsters within seagrass could contribute substantially to recruitment if post-settlement survival and growth were high. We tested the role of seagrass and hard-bottom habitats for P. argus recruitment in three ways. We first explored possible density-dependent regulation of early benthic juvenile lobster survival within cages deployed in seagrass and hard-bottom habitats. Second, we compared settlement and survival of P. argus in both habitats, by comparing the recovery of microwire-tagged early …

Problem
Relatively poor levels of mathematical thinking among American school children have been identified as a major issue over the past half century. Many efforts have been made to increase the mathematics performance of children in schools. Additionally, out-of-school-time programs have attempted to address this issue as well. Holistic development is one of the distinguishing features of Seventh-day Adventist instructional programs. Yet, as of 2007, the Pathfinder program, an informal educational program operated by the world-wide Seventh-day Adventist church, had no instructional product designed to foster participants’ cognitive development in mathematics. This study focused on the empirical development of an …

Post-Mortem Sperm Retrieval And The Social Security Administration: How Modern Reproductive Technology Makes Strange Bedfellows, Mary F. Radford
Faculty Publications By Year
This article was prepared in conjunction with the Thurgood Marshall School of Law March, 2009 symposium on "Emerging Issues in Estate Planning, Probate & Trust Law." The article examines a relatively new assisted reproduction technique through which the sperm of a man who has recently died is retrieved after his death, cryopreserved, and then later used by a woman (spouse, partner, or other) to produce a child. While much has been written about posthumously-conceived children (children conceived from sperm that were banked by the father while he was alive), there has to date been little examination of the ramifications of …
Stereotype Threat And Implicit Attitudes: Implications For The Leaky Pipeline Of Women In Science, Karen E. Stamm
Stereotype Threat And Implicit Attitudes: Implications For The Leaky Pipeline Of Women In Science, Karen E. Stamm
Open Access Dissertations
Historically, women have been under-represented in science disciplines. This phenomenon has been described as a "leaky pipeline" where fewer women advance to higher levels of the pipeline. A possible mechanism behind the leaky pipeline is stereotype threat, the fear of being negatively evaluated because of one's group membership. Stereotype threat can undermine the performance of the members of any disadvantaged group. For example, women may not perform well on science tasks because of the stereotype that "women can't do science."
This project examined whether stereotype threat negatively influences performance on an Implicit Association Test (IAT), a test that measures unconscious …
Assessing Essential Fish Habitat And Connectivity Using Otolith Chemistry And Growth Of Temperate And Tropical Fish, Ivan Mateo
Open Access Dissertations
Many shallow water habitats are vulnerable to loss or deterioration from a variety of processes, including erosion, pollution, and urbanization. Conservation of these 'nursery' habitats protects an important source of young individuals to offshore adult fish populations. The first part of this dissertation investigates whether young-of-the year (YOY) tautog Tautoga onitis, French grunt Haemulon flavolineatum, and schoolmaster Lutjanus apodus from different nursery habitats can be distinguished by chemical signatures in their otoliths. Concentrations of ten elements, as well as stable oxygen (18O) and carbon (13C) isotopes, were determined in otoliths. Chemical signatures differed significantly among fish from different nurseries (MANOVA …

Characterization Of N-Acetylglucosamine Utilization By The Lyme Disease Spirochete, Borrelia Burgdorferi, Ryan Gregory Rhodes
Open Access Dissertations
Borrelia burgdorferi is the causative agent of Lyme disease, the most common vector-borne disease in the United States. This spirochete is maintained exclusively within an enzootic cycle and alternates between a tick vector (Ixodes species) and vertebrate host. The organism has limited biosynthetic capabilities and must obtain many essential nutrients from its surrounding environment. One such nutrient is N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc), a component of peptidoglycan which forms the rigid layer of the microbial cell wall. B. burgdorferi can import GlcNAc as a monomer through one of several glucose transporters or as a dimer (chitobiose) through a dedicated phosphotransferase system (PTS). Despite …

Pyrethroid Resistance In The Annual Bluegrass Weevil, Listronotus Maculicollis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), From Southern New England Golf Courses, Darryl Ramoutar
Open Access Dissertations
The annual bluegrass weevil, Listronotus maculicollis Kirby (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), has emerged as a serious pest of Poa annua L. (Poales: Poaceae) (annual bluegrass), in the Northeastern US. In 2007, topical application bioassays of bifenthrin and λ-cyhalothrin conducted on field-collected populations of L. maculicollis Kirby from eight southern New England golf courses resulted in LD50 ranges of 1.80-244.67 ng/insect and 0.52-159.53 ng/insect for bifenthrin and λ-cyhalothrin respectively. These results revealed low to high levels of resistance to bifenthrin (6.1-135.9 fold) and λ-cyhalothrin (28.7-306.8 fold), possibly due to insecticide overuse. In 2008, topical application bioassays with bifenthrin and bifenthrin plus synergists affecting …
