Spatial And Temporal Trends Of Dissolved Nitrous Oxide In The Lamprey River Watershed And Controls On The End-Products Of Denitrification, Emily Difranco Jan 2009

Spatial And Temporal Trends Of Dissolved Nitrous Oxide In The Lamprey River Watershed And Controls On The End-Products Of Denitrification, Emily Difranco

Master's Theses and Capstones

An understanding of the controls on the production of the greenhouse gas N2O is important to assess the atmospheric contribution of N2O from freshwater streams. Concentration and percent saturation of dissolved N2O were measured from March 2008 to February 2009 and were used as to measure the potential for streams in the Lamprey River Watershed to lose N2O to the atmosphere. Almost all streams were oversaturated most of the year, and though field concentrations of dissolved N2O did show trends with stream chemistry, it is possible that N2O is not only being produced within the streams themselves, but is entering …

Jones V. Mayer Revisited, Symposium: New Strategies In Fair Housing, Mira Tanna

Cleveland State Law Review

This article revisits Jones v. Mayer. Jones v. Mayer, decided by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1968, was the first Supreme Court case to rule that the Civil Rights Act of 1866--which guarantees the same right of all citizens to inherit, purchase, lease, sell, hold, and convey real and personal property as is enjoyed by white citizens--applies not only to actions of the state but also to private parties.

Toward A Plain Meaning Approach To Analyzing Title Vii: Employment Discrimination Protection Of Transsexuals, Kevin Schwin

Cleveland State Law Review

The purpose of this Article is two-fold. First, this Article will discuss whether transsexuals should be protected at all from employment discrimination, and if so, whether protection should be accomplished through legislative or judicial means. Then, the Article will discuss each of the aforementioned approaches and advocate for a logical and consistent manner in which courts should decide cases under Title VII where a transsexual plaintiff alleges discrimination because of sex.

Agent Based Modeling In Computer Graphics And Games, Brian Macnamee

Books/Book Chapters

As graphics technology has improved in recent years, more and more importance has been placed on the behavior of virtual characters in applications set in virtual worlds in areas such as games, movies and simulations. The behavior of virtual characters should be believable in order to create the illusion that these virtual worlds are populated with living characters. This has led to the application of agent-based modeling to the control of these virtual characters. There are a number of advantages of using agent-based modeling techniques which include the fact that they remove the requirement for hand controlling all agents in …

Neglected In Their Transitions: Second Generation Muslim Youth Search For Support In A Context Of Islamaphobia, Mayida Zaal

Department of Teaching and Learning Scholarship and Creative Works

In the Netherlands, anxieties about immigrants, Islam, and the preservation of Dutch values have amplified fears of Muslim youth despite the public discourse of tolerance. While the burgeoning second-generation of Dutch-born Muslim youth faces discrimination in the public sphere, the labor market, and school, they search for services to support their efforts to navigate the formally tracked system of schooling. This dissertation reports on a year-long, qualitative study conducted in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Research questions focused on second-generation Muslim youth (mostly of Moroccan origin) and their experiences in youth programs created to support their educational needs.

The study employed ethnographic …

Is The Endangered Species Act The Right Place To Set U.S. Climate Change Policy?, Chris Logan Jan 2009

Is The Endangered Species Act The Right Place To Set U.S. Climate Change Policy?, Chris Logan

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

The Endangered Species Act (“ESA”) was enacted in ‘because of the inability to separate out the effect of a specific impacts on natural ecosystems. On December 11, 2008, the Bush Administration finalized a rule change to the ESA, which relieves the Department of the Interior of a duty to assess the impact of climate change on endangered species, and further allows federal agencies to bypass consultation with the Fish and Wildlife Service (“FWS”) or the National Marine Fisheries Service (“NMFS”) when determining whether federal actions might threaten protected species.

Reproductive Biology Of Middle Mississippi River Shovelnose Sturgeon: Insights From Seasonal And Age Variation In Plasma Sex Steroid And Calcium Concentrations, Michael T. Stahl, Gregory Whitledge, Anita M. Kelly

Publications

Shovelnose sturgeon Scaphirhynchus platorynchus are endemic to the Mississippi River drainage and are commercially harvested for roe in several states. Status of shovelnose sturgeon populations throughout much of its range is unknown or declining; Mississippi River stocks are experiencing recruitment overfishing and may be at risk of collapse. Restoration of shovelnose sturgeon populations will require additional information on their reproductive biology, including age at maturity and reproductive status and cycles. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of reproductive stage, fish age, and season on plasma 17-β estradiol (E2) and calcium (Ca2+) concentrations …

The Interactions Of The Largest Subunit Of Rna Polymerase Ii With Other Cellular Proteins: A Bioinformatic Approach, Abhijit Shukla, Aparna Natarajan, Sukesh Bhaumik, Hany A. El-Shemy, David A. Lightfoot

Articles

The function of a protein is governed by its interaction with other proteins inside a cell. Therefore, it is important to identify the interacting partners of a particular protein to decipher its function. The protein interaction networks are generally determined by bioinformatic as well as experimental methodologies such as yeast two hybrid, mass spectrometry, immunoprecipitation, and fluorescence resonance energy transfer assays. Here, we have analyzed bioinformatically the interactions of Rpb1p (the largest subunit of RNA Polymerase II) with other proteins in yeast, using Cytoscape software and Biogrid/Biomart database. We find that Rpb1p interacts with a large number of proteins involved …

Comparative Models Of Hydrocarbon Emissions For A Diesel Engine Operating At Constant Loads And Speeds, Dennis G. Watson, David R. Bostic, Tony V. Harrison

Articles

Linear multiple regression (LMR) and nonlinear polynomial network (NPN) models were developed from data collected from ISO 8178‐4 (1996) test cycle B‐type tests (ISO) and an expanded set of tests (EXP) to predict hydrocarbon (HC) emissions from a diesel engine. LMR using the ISO training data (R2 = 0.94) resulted in overfitting of the model as applied to the evaluation data (R2 = 0.49). LMR based on the expanded data (R2 = 0.68) was a better LMR model when applied to the evaluation data (R2 = 0.64). NPN using the expanded training data (R2 = 0.99) resulted in the best …

Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), an inflammatory cytokine, and its receptor CD74 are upregulated by bladder inflammation. MIF-mediated signal transduction involves binding to cell-surface CD74, this study documents, in vivo, MIF-CD74 interactions at the urothelial cell surface. N-hydroxysulfosuccinimide biotin ester-labeled surface urothelial proteins in rats treated either with saline or substance P (SP, 40 μg/kg). The bladder was examined by histology and confocal microscopy. Biotinylated proteins were purified by avidin agarose, immunoprecipitated with anti-MIF or anti-CD74 antibodies, and detected with strepavidin-HRP. Only superficial urothelial cells were biotinylated. These cells contained a biotinylated MIF/CD74 cell-surface complex that was increased in …

Congressional Responsibility In Controlling The War Machine, Jeffrey A. Botelho Jan 2009

Congressional Responsibility In Controlling The War Machine, Jeffrey A. Botelho

St. Thomas Law Review

Part I reviews the constitutional enumeration of congressional and executive war powers and their historical use from the days of the Framers to the current U.S.-Iraq conflict, and goes on to evaluate the constitutionality of the President's initiation of this war. Part II discusses the judicially-created idea of inherent presidential power and its constitutionality, and examines more recent cases that addressed the abilities of Congress to restrict and limit power. The section concludes by addressing the judiciary's (rarely-utilized) role in mediating disputes between the President and Congress. Part III addresses the lack of accountability of our Congress in the fall …

Unfoldomics Of Human Diseases: Linking Protein Intrinsic Disorder With Diseases, Vladimir N. Uversky, Christopher J. Oldfield, Uros Midic, Hongbo Xie, Bin Xue, Slobodan Vucetic, Lilia M. Iakoucheva, Zoran Obradovic, A. Keith Dunker

Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

Background: Intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) and intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs) lack stable tertiary and/or secondary structure yet fulfills key biological functions. The recent recognition of IDPs and IDRs is leading to an entire field aimed at their systematic structural characterization and at determination of their mechanisms of action. Bioinformatics studies showed that IDPs and IDRs are highly abundant in different proteomes and carry out mostly regulatory functions related to molecular recognition and signal transduction. These activities complement the functions of structured proteins. IDPs and IDRs were shown to participate in both one-to-many and many-to-one signaling. Alternative splicing and posttranslational modifications …

The treatment of viral diseases remains an intractable problem facing the medical community. Conventional antivirals focus upon selective targeting of virus-encoded targets. However, the plasticity of viral nucleic acid mutation, coupled with the large number of progeny that can emerge from a single infected cells, often conspire to render conventional antivirals ineffective as resistant variants emerge. Compounding this, new viral pathogens are increasingly recognized and it is highly improbable that conventional approaches could address emerging pathogens in a timely manner. Our laboratories have adopted an orthogonal approach to combat viral disease: Target the host to deny the pathogen the ability …

Trey Ellis's Platitudes: Redefining Black Voices, Quan Manh Ha Jan 2009

Trey Ellis's Platitudes: Redefining Black Voices, Quan Manh Ha

Ethnic Studies Review

Trey Ellis has emerged as a prominent African American writer of the late-twentieth century, despite the small number of his published works. "The New Black Aesthetic," an essay that he first published in CaUaloo in 1989, one year after the publication of his first novel, Platitudes, stands as a manifesto that defines and articulates his perspective on the emerging black literary voices and culture of the time, and on "the future of African American artistic expression" in the postmodern era.1 According to Eric Lott, Ellis's novel parodies the literary and cultural conflict between such male experimental writers as lshmael Reed …

Emerging Global Environmental Governance, N. Brian Winchester Jan 2009

Emerging Global Environmental Governance, N. Brian Winchester

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

Environmental thinking and activism are steadily gaining widespread, even global acceptance, but are often in conflict with economic interests and international politics. Environmental priorities are further challenged by scientific uncertainty involving effects that in some cases will only become manifest far into the future. Nonetheless, accompanying this global environmental awakening has been an extraordinary number of international agreements on a wide range of critical environmental issues. While many of these environmental regimes lack adequate financial support and sanctions for non-compliance, they involve a variety of non-state actors, suggesting meaningful movement towards an evolving, complex form of global environmental governance. Indeed, …

Pain, Gain, Or Shame: The Evolution Of Environmental Law And The Role Of Multinational Corporations, Michael Ewing-Chow, Darryl Soh Jan 2009

Pain, Gain, Or Shame: The Evolution Of Environmental Law And The Role Of Multinational Corporations, Michael Ewing-Chow, Darryl Soh

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

The evolution of environmental law in the past century has been linked to the growing acceptance of the notion of collective global responsibility, which entails the notion of sustainable development. At the turn of this century, the focus in environmental law has shifted from the creation of a global framework to deal with environmental problems to that of compliance with these frameworks. As a result, the primary actor of environmental policy has shifted from the state to the corporation. How has environmental law developed so as to encourage compliance by this new primary actor? Conversely, how has the corporation been …

Credit Cards, Attorney's Fees, And The Putative Debtor: A Pyrrhic Victory? Putative Debtors May Win The Battle But Nevertheless Lose The War, Jennifer M. Smith

Journal Publications

This Article addresses the current credit card industry and its detrimental impact on society, and it discusses the history and purpose of attorney's fees, as well as the pitfalls in attorney's fee legislation. It analyzes the case study under various state laws, with heavy emphasis on Florida and California law, then recommends a legislative change or judicial intervention to ensure that creditors incur financial responsibility when they erroneously sue consumers. With these changes, consumers are made whole when they must defend themselves against small claims lawsuits erroneously filed against them, so as not to become victims of needless debt.

Local Law Enforcement's Initial Role In Response To A Radiological Dispersion Device Attack, Andrew Robert Hoehl Jan 2009

Local Law Enforcement's Initial Role In Response To A Radiological Dispersion Device Attack, Andrew Robert Hoehl

Master's Theses

Today the potential exists for a terrorist organization to use a Radiological Dispersion Device or a dirty bomb within the United States. The results of such an attack could be catastrophic to the affected population. The response by law enforcement must be calculated and planned.

To properly analyze the law enforcement's role in a radioactive incident a qualitative approach was taken. A determination must be made prior to an attack to discern what kind of training will be necessary, what equipment will be required, and what response procedures need to be in place to ensure a safe and efficient response. …
