[1] Do the chronological methods used in the construction of paleoclimate records influence the results of the frequency analysis applied to them? We explore this phenomenon using the Dongge Cave speleothem record (U-series chronology with variable time steps, Δt) and the El Malpais tree-ring index (cross-dating of ring-width series). Interpolation of the Dongge Cave record to a constant Δt resulted in the suppression of periodicities (<20 years) altering the red noise model used for significance testing. Frequency analysis of temporal subsets of the El Malpais tree-ring index revealed that concentrations of variance varied with the number of ring-width series. Frequency analyses of these records identified significant periodicities, some common to both (∼25 and ∼69 years). Cross-wavelet analysis, which examines periodicities in the time domain, revealed that coherency between these records occurs intermittently. We found the chronology methods can influence the ability of frequency analysis to detect periodicities and tests for coherency.

Study Of Binary Complexes Of Nickel(Ii), Copper(Ii), And Vanadium(V) With Acetazolamide In Aqueous Medium By Voltammetry, İclal Bulut
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The voltammetric behaviour of acetazolamide, the systemic carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, in the presence of some metal ions (Cu(II), Ni(II), and V(V)) were investigated using square-wave and cyclic voltammetry in physiological pH (pH 7.4). Square-wave voltammogram of acetazolamide in the absence of metal ions gave only 1 reduction peak at -1.65 V attributed to a catalytic hydrogen peak. Three reversible peaks at -0.068, -0.262, and -0.434 V were observed for the solutions containing both copper(II) ions and acetazolamide in the SWV. The peak at -0.434 V was attributed to Cu(II)-acetazolamide complex. In the presence of acetazolamide, copper-acetazolamide complex formation was proved …

Spectroscopic Studies And Hartree-Fock Ab Initio Calculations Of A Substituted Amide Of Pyrazine-2-Carboxylic Acid - C_{16}H_{18}Cln_3o, Chacko Yohannan Panicker, Hema Tresa Vanghese, Thaha Thansani
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A substituted amide of pyrazine-2-carboxylic acid was prepared and the IR spectrum was recorded and analysed. The compound prepared was identified by NMR and mass spectra. The vibrational frequencies of the title compound were computed using the Hartree-Fock level of theory using the 6-31G* basis set and compared with the experimental data. The red shift of the NH stretching frequency indicates weakening of the NH bond. The splitting of the NH stretching bond is due to Davidov coupling between neighbouring units. The first hyperpolarizability, infrared intensities, and Raman activities are reported. Methyl substitution affects all the carbon-nitrogen and carbon-carbon bond …

A Collection Of Micrographs: Where Science And Art Meet, Vuk Uskoković
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Micrographs obtained using different instrumental techniques are presented with the purpose of demonstrating their artistic qualities. The quality of uniformity currently dominates the aesthetic assessment in scientific practice and is discussed in relation to the classical appreciation of the interplay between symmetry and asymmetry in arts. It is argued that scientific and artistic qualities have converged and inspired each other throughout millennia. With scientific discoveries and inventions enriching the world of communication, broadening the space for artistic creativity and making artistic products more accessible than ever, science inevitably influences artistic creativity. On the other hand, the importance of aesthetic principles …

While cytomegalovirus (CMV) infects and replicates in a multitude of cell types, the ability of the virus to replicate in antigen presenting cells (APCs) is believed to play a critical role in the viral dissemination and latency. CMV infection of APCs and manipulation of their function is an important area of investigation. CMV down regulation of MHC II is reportedly mediated by the HCMV proteins US2, US3, UL83, UL111a (vIL10) or through the induction of cellular IL10. In this study, we demonstrate that rat CMV (RCMV) significantly reduces MHC II expression by mechanisms that do not involve orthologues of the …

Cloned Meat, Voluntary Food Labeling, And Organic Oreos, Donna M. Byrne
Faculty Scholarship
In December 2006, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it had reviewed all the available evidence and was poised to approve meat and milk from cloned animals and their progeny. Such products, said the FDA, are virtually identical to meat or milk from a non-clone. Further, the FDA announced it would almost certainly not require food from clones to be labeled as such. Part I of this article identifies three functions that labels perform, outlines the types of information usually required, and introduces the rule that voluntary label information cannot be misleading. Part II focuses on process information …

Beyond Bidil: The Expanding Embrace Of Race In Biomedical Research And Product Development, Jonathan Kahn
Faculty Scholarship
In 2005 the FDA approved BiDil, the first drug ever to include a race-specific indication on its label - to treat heart failure in a “black” patient. In the aftermath of this controversial approval and subsequent marketing of the drug, many have wondered whether BiDil was an anomaly or a harbinger of things to come. This article moves beyond BiDil to explore how similar yet distinct models are developing for the continuing exploitation of race in biomedical practice and product development. It will explore the tensions embedded in the persistent use of racial categories even as specific genetic variations linked …
Race, Genes And Justice: A Call To Reform The Presentation Of Forensic Dna Evidence In Criminal Trials, Jonathan Kahn
Race, Genes And Justice: A Call To Reform The Presentation Of Forensic Dna Evidence In Criminal Trials, Jonathan Kahn
Faculty Scholarship
The article considers how and when, if at all, is it appropriate to use race in presenting forensic DNA evidence in a court of law? This relatively straightforward question has been wholly overlooked by legal scholars. By pursuing it, this article promises to transform fundamentally the presentation forensic DNA evidence. Currently, it is standard practice for prosecutors to use race in presenting the odds that a given defendant's DNA matches DNA found at a crime scene. This article takes an interdisciplinary approach to question the validity of this widespread but largely uninterrogated practice. It examines how race came to enter …

Scaling "Local": The Implications Of Greenhouse Gas Regulation In San Bernardino County, Hari M. Osofsky
Michigan Journal of International Law
This Essay analyzes local climate regulation in San Bernardino County as a window into the complexities of defining a local scale in an interconnected world. In so doing, it aims to contribute to the Symposium's broader dialogue about "Territory Without Boundaries" and the Panel's more specific discussion of "Urban Territory in a Global World." As a purely territorial matter, U.S. cities and counties differ substantially in their sizes, the quantity and physical characteristics of their land, the size and density of their populations, and the needs of their citizens. Structurally, these localities remain administrative subunits of states, but they also …
A Sex Difference In Facial Contrast And Its Exaggeration By Cosmetics, Richard Russell
A Sex Difference In Facial Contrast And Its Exaggeration By Cosmetics, Richard Russell
Psychology Faculty Publications
This study demonstrates the existence of a sex difference in facial contrast. By measuring carefully controlled photographic images, female faces were shown to have greater luminance contrast between the eyes, lips, and the surrounding skin than did male faces. This sex difference in facial contrast was found to influence the perception of facial gender. An androgynous face can be made to appear female by increasing the facial contrast, or to appear male by decreasing the facial contrast. Application of cosmetics was found to consistently increase facial contrast. Female faces wearing cosmetics had greater facial contrast than the same faces not …

Nano-Structure Formation Driven By Local Protonation Of Polymer Thin Films, Carsten Maedler, Harald Graaf, Mingdi Yan, Andres H. La Rosa
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We report the creation of nano-structures via Dip Pen Nanolithography by locally exploiting the mechanical response of polymer thin films to an acidic environment. Protonation of cross linked poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) leads to a swelling of the polymer. We studied this process by using an AFM tip coated with a pH 4 buffer. Protons migrate through a water meniscus between tip and sample into the polymer matrix and interact with the nitrogen of the pyridyl group forming a pyridinium cation. The increase in film thickness, which is due to Coulomb repulsion between the charged centers, was investigated using Atomic Force Microscopy. …

With the linkage between fossil fuel use and climate change now almost universally accepted, addressing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) has become a subject of great social urgency and technological challenge. A variety of models exists or are under development for analyzing the role of more sustainable systems, such as renewable energy technologies, in mitigating climate change. However the direct cost of these technologies is generally higher than that of fossil fuel systems. Methods are needed to more fully account for externalities, societal impacts, and social values associated with fossil fuels versus sustainable energy systems. This paper presents a conceptual model …

Diverse Contexts Of Reception And Feelings Of Belonging, Alex Stepick, Carol Dutton Stepick
Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations
The theoretical focus of this paper is the context of reception experienced by migrants in their new homeland. In particular we examine relations between established residents and newcomers or immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, and other Caribbean and Latin American nations in South Florida. Based upon long term fieldwork among late adolescents and young adults, we develop a framework and give ethnographic examples of established resident-newcomer relations that influence the contexts of reception for immigrants in South Florida. These contexts range from positive to negative, vary between national and local settings, and change over time.

The Effects Of Marriage On Psychological Well-Being Focusing On Motherhood Status Prior To Marriage, Hyeyoung Woo, R. Kelly Raley
Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations
A substantial number of studies suggest that marriage provides psychological benefits for individuals. However, it is less known if the beneficial effects of marriage on psychological wellbeing vary by motherhood status prior to marriage. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 79 Cohort, we estimate the effects of marriage moderated by motherhood status on subsequent levels of psychological well-being among a sample of the initially never married women. Our results indicate that entering a first marriage is associated with greater improvements in psychological well-being for single mothers compared to childless women. The results are somewhat inconsistent with previous …

Better To Have It All?: Employment, Motherhood And Women’S Psychological Well-Being, Hyeyoung Woo
Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations
While there have been dramatic increases in the labor force participation among women with minor children, our understanding about their psychological consequences is limited. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979, this study addresses a question of how employment and motherhood are associated with women’s psychological well-being. It also assesses variations in the associations by occupational characteristics and age of children. Results show that the positive effects of employment on women’s psychological well-being are contingent upon family status by providing partial support for the work and family conflict perspective. While the overall association between motherhood and psychological …

Role Of Nos And Nox-4 On Pancreatic Signal Transduction, Jessica M. Cowell
Honors Capstones
Nitric oxide is a signaling molecule which has been shown to be a necessary component for secretion. The actual process of exocytosis that leads to secretion is of yet unknown. This project attempted to understand the protein complex NOX-4 as well as NO, a product of NOS, in their signaling roles that lead to the exocytosis and secretion of digestive enzymes from pancreatic acinar cells. There were several objectives of this project which included determining the location of NOX-4, how hormonal stimulation affected recruitment to the zymogen granules and if NOX-4 was necessary for secretion to occur. Also investigated was …
