In a 2001 report, the U.S. National Institutes of Health called for more integration of the social sciences into health-related research, including research guided by theories and methods that take social and cultural systems into consideration. Based on a theoretical framework that integrates Hofstede's cultural dimensions with sociological theory, the authors used multilevel modeling to explore the association of culture with structural inequality and health disparities. Their results support the idea that cultural dimensions and social structure, along with economic development, may account for much of the cross-national variation in the distribution of health inequalities. Sensitivity tests also suggest that …

Socioeconomic Disparity In Healthcare-Seeking Behavior Among Chinese Women With Genitourinary Symptoms, Qi Zhang, Diane Lauderdale, Shanshan Mou, William I. Parish, Edward O. Laumann, John Schneider

Community & Environmental Health Faculty Publications

Background: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are of growing concern in China. Understanding the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and healthcare-seeking (HCS) behavior will help design effective policies to contain the epidemic of STIs across SES.

Methods: We used the Chinese Health and Family Life Survey, a nationally representative survey of 3813 adults from 48 Chinese cities and counties during 1999-2000. We studied the 730 women with at least one genito-urinary (GU) symptom. HCS was measured by whether respondents visited a hospital or an unrecognized clinic, self-treatment, or doing nothing. Formal treatment was defined as visiting a hospital. SES was measured …

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

We report on the isolation and evaluation of 11 microsatellites from a widespread eastern North American wetland sedge, Carex scoparia. Loci exhibit 3–9 alleles over five populations and significant FIS (0.204–0.717) in most populations. All primers cross-amplify in at least two other species, and 10 cross-amplify in the more distantly related C. stipata. These markers will be used to examine population genetics and patterns of chromosomal diversification in this ecologically important sedge species and its relatives.

Profiting From Nonprofits: A Study Of Nonprofits And The Role They Play In Society, Amy Koshy, Kristen Arndt, Jamie Cohen

Big iDeas 2009 Proposals

In recent years, Dallas nonprofits have been part of a tumultuous roller coaster ride, as rankings for the sector have gone from an all time low of 25th out of 25 in 2005, to 2nd in 2006, and most recently 13th in 2008. The sector has also continuously received low rankings in categories concerning nonprofit financial health and was cited to have some of the slowest growing charities in the nation. With the economy currently in a grave recession, it is reported that several nonprofits have shut their doors and it is expected that more shall follow. This poses a …

Confronting A Rising Tide: A Proposal For A Convention On Climate Change Refugees, Bonnie Docherty, Tyler Giannini Jan 2009

Confronting A Rising Tide: A Proposal For A Convention On Climate Change Refugees, Bonnie Docherty, Tyler Giannini

Sabin Center for Climate Change Law

This Article proposes a new legal instrument to confront the issue of climate change refugees. It defines climate change refugees as people whom climate change forces to relocate across national borders. The existing international legal framework – including its laws and its institutions – does not adequately address the emerging crisis. The proposed instrument should create obligations to deal with both prevention and remediation of the climate change refugee problem. First, the instrument should establish guarantees of human rights protections and humanitarian aid for a specific class of people. Second, it should spread the burden of fulfilling those guarantees across …

Painting Redd Offsets Green: A Case For Statutory Deuteranopia, Rommel Casis Jan 2009

Painting Redd Offsets Green: A Case For Statutory Deuteranopia, Rommel Casis

Sabin Center for Climate Change Law

Offsets generated by projects for reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation (“REDD”) is a particularly controversial form of carbon offset. Excluded from the Kyoto Protocol mechanisms, REDD offsets are now making a comeback ever since the Bali Action Plan specifically referred to REDD. Most recently, the Copenhagen Accord recognized the crucial role of REDD and the need to enhance removals of GHG emissions by forests and agreed on the need to provide incentives to such actions to enable the mobilization of financial resources from developed countries.4 It would seem therefore that the issuance and trade of REDD offsets may finds …

Effect Of Correlated Lateral Geniculate Nucleus Firing Rates On Predictions For Monocular Eye Closure Versus Monocular Retinal Inactivation, Brian S. Blais, Leon N. Cooper, Harel Z. Shouval Jan 2009

Effect Of Correlated Lateral Geniculate Nucleus Firing Rates On Predictions For Monocular Eye Closure Versus Monocular Retinal Inactivation, Brian S. Blais, Leon N. Cooper, Harel Z. Shouval

Science and Technology Department Faculty Journal Articles

Monocular deprivation experiments can be used to distinguish between different ideas concerning properties of cortical synaptic plasticity. Monocular deprivation by lid suture causes a rapid disconnection of the deprived eye connected to cortical neurons whereas total inactivation of the deprived eye produces much less of an ocular dominance shift. In order to understand these results one needs to know how lid suture and retinal inactivation affect neurons in the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) that provide the cortical input. Recent experimental results by Linden et al. showed that monocular lid suture and monocular inactivation do not change the mean firing rates …

A Self Healing Smart Syntactic Foam Based Grid Stiffened Sandwich Structure, Manu Kuruvila John Jan 2009

A Self Healing Smart Syntactic Foam Based Grid Stiffened Sandwich Structure, Manu Kuruvila John

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Syntactic foams are composite materials synthesized by dispersing microballoons in a polymeric, ceramic or metallic matrix. In the past three decades, syntactic foams have gained immense importance as a lightweight and damage-tolerant material when used in foam-cored sandwich structures. Because of the structural-length scale damages by low velocity impact such as tool drops, runway debris etc., sandwich structures usually have a very low residual structural capacity. Unfortunately, macro-length scale damage, in particular internal damage such as impact damage, is very difficult to repair. Therefore, there is a genuine need to develop impact-tolerant and self-healing syntactic foams which can be used …

The Influence Of An Ecosystem Engineer On Nutrient Subsidies And Fish Invasions In Southwestern Montana, Magnus Mccaffery Jan 2009

The Influence Of An Ecosystem Engineer On Nutrient Subsidies And Fish Invasions In Southwestern Montana, Magnus Mccaffery

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Streams and associated riparian zones are among the world's most highly valued yet threatened ecosystems. Interest in using the ecosystem engineering behavior of beaver tomeet watershed conservation goals is becoming more pervasive, owing to substantive work documenting the physical effects of beaver impoundments on freshwater ecosystems. However, it is unclear how beaver modify ecological processes linking abiotic factors to changes in the surrounding biotic community. I investigated how beaver impoundments influence local food web processes, as well as impact native fish species threatened by nonnative invasions.

I showed that beaver impoundments enhanced aquatic resource availability to terrestrial consumers. Beaver impounded …

Conformationally Gated Electron Transfer Studies Of Iso-1-Cytochrome C, Swati Bandi Jan 2009

Conformationally Gated Electron Transfer Studies Of Iso-1-Cytochrome C, Swati Bandi

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Protein folding is important because all proteins must fold to achieve their active conformer. In many cases, misfolding is the cause of disease and thus, understanding folding may lead to cures for disease. This thesis focuses on the dynamics and thermodynamics of partially unfolded states of proteins that lie near the bottom of a folding funnel. Various studies have provided evidence that partially unfolded proteins can be key intermediates in metabolic processes and in aggregation diseases. Partially unfolded proteins also provide insight into the types of structures that guide/misguide the process of protein folding. Less is known about how stability …

The Meaning Of Markets: How The Domestic Fair Trade Association Understands Creating Social Change Using Market Initiatives, Emily Elizabeth Thorn

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Agriculture in North America has tended toward consolidation and industrialization in the past century. Responding to the narrowing of market advantage for small-scale organic farmers and the plight of farm workers, as well as to both the failures and potentials of international fair trade and organic initiatives, members of the nascent Domestic Fair Trade Association (DFTA) seek to insert social justice into the North American food system using a market-based initiative mediated by independent that conform to stringent criteria. This study examines the meaning of fair trade in a North American context; the challenges facing domestic fair trade initiatives, and …

The Postmortem Interval: A Systematic Study Of Pig Decomposition In West Central Montana, Hillary Renee' Parsons Jan 2009

The Postmortem Interval: A Systematic Study Of Pig Decomposition In West Central Montana, Hillary Renee' Parsons

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The postmortem interval (PMI) is an important piece of information used by forensic and criminal investigators to help investigate crimes and other unattended deaths. Time since death estimations assist law enforcement in providing a reference with which to compare a suspects alibi, identify victims of crime, and solve cases. Studies of decomposition have been conducted at the University of Tennessee’s Anthropological Research Facility in Knoxville, TN; however, decomposition at high altitude climates characterized by colder temperatures and arid conditions is poorly understood. Further, the lack of postmortem interval studies in west central Montana has hindered the investigation and identification of …

Exploring Perspectives On Landscape And Language Among Kaike Speakers In Dolpa, Nepal, Corrie Maya Daurio Jan 2009

Exploring Perspectives On Landscape And Language Among Kaike Speakers In Dolpa, Nepal, Corrie Maya Daurio

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The majority of the world’s languages are in danger of extinction within this century. Of the more than 6000 languages in the world, 4000-5000 are spoken by Indigenous peoples. Accompanying the loss of languages is the loss of the capacity for these peoples to transmit those aspects of their environmental knowledge systems which are embedded and expressed in their languages. The Kaike speakers of Tichurong in Dolpa, Nepal represent one of these endangered language communities, with approximately 800 speakers remaining. The purpose of this research was to engage Kaike speakers in an exploration of the relationships among their language, environment, …
