World Englishes: Practical Implications For Teaching And Research, Fatima Esseili, Kyle Mcintosh, Cindy Torres, Elena Lawrick, Cristine Mcmartin-Miller, Shih-Yu Chang

English Faculty Publications

With the emergence of World Englishes (WE) and the continuous flow of international students into universities in the United States, issues surrounding the tolerance and acceptance of varieties of English, the notion of standards, and the concept of nativeness all come to the forefront of research and pedagogy. Since English is the dominant language of international academic publication and since it has been adapted and adopted by a number of countries for various instrumental, institutional, innovative/imaginative, and interpersonal functions (Kachru, 1984), it is essential for teachers and administrators to be aware of the pluricentricity of English and their students’ different …

A New Home For An Old Friend : Responsible Aquarium Stewardship, Suzie Caffery, Diahn Escue

CEELAB Children's Books

Moving to a new home is always hard. It's even rougher to figure out what to do with the pets and plants in your fish tank if it is not possible to take them with you. In this book we describe the devastating results to the environment when a seaweed and a fish species were released by humans into coastal waters.

Acute And Chronic Effects Of Coal Tar And Asphalt Sealants On Salamanders, Thomas Bommarito, Richard Halbrook, Donald W. Sparling

KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports

The Barton Springs salamander (Eurycea sosorum) is a federally endangered species inhabiting pools of the Edwards aquifer in the City of Austin, Texas. The presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in these pools elicited concern for the conservation of the species because 4 PAHs have acute and chronic effects on aquatic organisms, including amphibians. These PAHs appear to be coming from sealants applied to pavements within the watershed of these ponds. To determine if Barton Springs salamanders could be a risk to these PAHs three laboratory experiments were funded by the Barton Springs Conservation Foundation and conducted by at Southern …

KIP Articles

As historically recognized, three stygobitic species of the subgenus Aviticambarus, genus Cambarus inhabit Mississippian limestone caves along the southern edge of the Southern Appalachians and Highland Rim in southeastern Tennessee and Northern Alabama, U.S.A. These include Cambarus hamulatus, C. jonesi, and C. veitchorum. All stygobitic members of the genus Procambarus inhabit caves in Florida, Cuba, and Mexico with exception of P. pecki (in the monotypic subgenus Remoticambarus), which exists in only three caves with C. jonesi in Northwestern Alabama. It was hypothesized that Procambarus pecki was derived from a primitive Procambarus stock that gave rise to the genera Cambarus and …

Ultraviolet Radiation Sensitivity In Cave Bacteria: Evidence Of Adaptation To The Subsurface?, Jessica R. Snider, Caitlin Goin, Robert V. Miller Jan 2009

Ultraviolet Radiation Sensitivity In Cave Bacteria: Evidence Of Adaptation To The Subsurface?, Jessica R. Snider, Caitlin Goin, Robert V. Miller

KIP Articles

We hypothesize that a reduced capacity to withstand or repair cellular damage from ultraviolet radiation may be present in cave-adapted microorganisms that never experience such conditions. However, a small number of previous studies have shown that some subsurface bacteria do not show greater sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) than surface bacteria. To estimate UVR sensitivity in cave bacteria, bacterial isolates were collected from Carlsbad Cavern, New Mexico, U.S.A., and percent survival following exposure to various UVC and UVA radiation doses was determined. Cave bacteria from Left Hand Tunnel in Carlsbad Cavern and surface bacteria from soil and rocks above Carlsbad …

Evolving Innovation Paradigms And The Global Intellectual Property Regime, Katherine J. Strandburg Jan 2009

Evolving Innovation Paradigms And The Global Intellectual Property Regime, Katherine J. Strandburg

Faculty Articles

Since the negotiation of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property (TRIPS) in 1994, the innovative landscape has undergone dramatic changes due to technological advances in fields such as biotechnology, nanotechnology, and digital communications and computation. The increasing potential for user innovation, and open and collaborative innovation has brought an explosion of innovative activity that does not fit into the sales-oriented, mass market model which underlies the global intellectual property regime. In this Article, I argue that the debate over global governance of innovation should be expanded to account more fully for the implications of these changes. For the …

User Innovator Community Norms: At The Boundary Between Academic And Industry Research, Katherine J. Strandburg

Faculty Articles

The article presents the author's analysis on the research tools and materials called Pasteur's Quadrant use in basic science and applied overlap in the U.S. He explains that user innovation is in the form of collaborative communities, wherein, they share technical advances with other user. The article also presents various analyses of preference and social norms that highlight the scientific interest in the same research questions. In addition, it discusses the importance promotion of similar policies in different research tools by research funding agencies.

Moving The Wto Forward—One Case At A Time, Robert L. Howse Jan 2009

Moving The Wto Forward—One Case At A Time, Robert L. Howse

Faculty Articles

The article contends that the World Trade Organization (WTO) legal system and WTO dispute settlement system both have characteristics of an effective legal system which the author claims has the capacity for evolution through incremental practice. The author accounts a story that reflects common law prejudice on what makes legal systems work. He claims that the WTO dispute settlement system shows its efficacy through evolving by practice in the absence of a change in the treaty mandate.

Contemporary Foreign Investment Law: An "Empire Of Law" Or The "Law Of Empire"?, José E. Alvarez

Faculty Articles

The article discusses the relationship between modern international economic law and empire. It cites the apparent incompatibility of the basic characteristics of the modern international legal regimes with the concept of empire as viewed in the ancient world. Also tackled is the concept of colonial empire of professor Michael Doyle. It notes the reluctance of the government of the U.S. to the attractions of being ruled by an emperor with absolute authority.

Yellow By Law, Devon W. Carbado

Faculty Articles

The article focuses on the decision of the U.S. government during World War II to intern people of Japanese ancestry. The move of the government was designed to establish the extent to which, and precisely how, the nation's Supreme Court acquiesced in various aspects of internment and to show the continuities between that acquiescence and legal doctrine and social practices. Details on the Naturalization Act of 1790 are also considered.
