Binding Characteristics Study For Dengue Virus Non-Structural Protein 1 Of Antigen And Its Antibody By Using Circular Dichroism Technique, N. Ayusoff, N. Soin, N. Abd Rahman, R.N.Z. Raja Abd Rahman, M.K.B. Abd Kahar, F. Ibrahim

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

This paper presents the binding characteristics study of dengue non-structural protein 1 (NS1) antigen and its antibody using circular dichroism technique in far UV region. Circular dichroism (CD) is a spectroscopic technique which measures differences in the absorption of left-handed and right handed circularly polarized light. The CD spectrum can determine conformation of the NS1 antigen and its antibody, conformational changes of the antigen-antibody interaction and estimates the secondary structure of these proteins in far UV region. Firstly, CD spectrum of individual solutions of the antigen and the antibody were measured. Then, the solutions were mixed to produce a solution …

Conclusions

• Co-product GHG emissions credit varied by >2-fold, from 11.5 to 28.3 gCO2e per MJ of ethanol produced

• Co-product GHG emissions credit depend on
-types of co-products produced
-proportion fed to beef cattle vs. diary or swine
-location of corn production; the CP credit is highest in regions where GHG kg-1grain are highest

• Depending on CP production types and feeding livestock classes, corn-ethanol net life cycle GHG intensity is 44-56 gCO2e per MJ

• Midwest corn-ethanol reduces GHG emissions compared to gasoline by 47% on average, with co-products offsetting 23% of …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Grassbed Treatments As Habitat For Juvenile Black Bass In A Drawdown Reservoir, D. R. Ratcliff, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, J. Zustak Jan 2009

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Grassbed Treatments As Habitat For Juvenile Black Bass In A Drawdown Reservoir, D. R. Ratcliff, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, J. Zustak

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Many reservoirs in arid regions experience highly variable water levels caused by seasonal inflow fluctuations and designated outflow requirements. At Shasta Lake, California, managers plant cereal-grain grassbeds on exposed drawdown shorelines to increase juvenile fish habitat, localize productivity, and increase invertebrate fish prey. To determine the efficacy of these plantings, the abundance of juvenile black basses Micropterus spp. (20–55 mm standard length) and the amount of periphyton and macroinvertebrate prey were compared among three treatment types: (1) planted grassbeds of cereal barley Hordeum vulgare; (2) artificial rope grassbeds, which eliminated physical deterioration and nutrient release; and (3) nonplanted control sites …

Capillary Electrophoresis Based Microbial Detection And Separation, Ryan Nelson, Andrew Lantz Jan 2009

Capillary Electrophoresis Based Microbial Detection And Separation, Ryan Nelson, Andrew Lantz

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

Capillary Electrophoresis (CE) represents a significant tool for the separation of microorganisms as well as the detection and isolation of Candida albicans (CA) fungus in human blood. There currently exists few rapid means by which biological pathogens can be tested, at low concentration, in blood, and other organic matrices. Other common chromatographic techniques, such as GC, HPLC, IR and MS do not have the capability of analyzing living microorganisms, nor the ability to separate them with any precision. CE offers the rare opportunity to separate individual cells by the charge to size ratio as well as their isoelectric focusing point …

Sex Differences In Innate Immunity In Tree Swallows, Bradley J. Houdek, Michael P. Lombardo, Patrick A. Thorpe Jan 2009

Sex Differences In Innate Immunity In Tree Swallows, Bradley J. Houdek, Michael P. Lombardo, Patrick A. Thorpe

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

Evolutionary theory predicts that exposure to more diverse pathogens will lead to the evolution of more effective immune responses. The innate immune system defends the host from pathogens in a non-specific manner and is an important first-line of defense. We predicted that female Tree Swallows have more robust innate immunocompetence than males because females are exposed to more microbes during the breeding season than are males. This is because (a) females participate in extra-pair copulations with multiple males exposing them to sexually transmitted microbes (STMs) (e.g., bacteria, fungi, viruses), (b) the transmission of STMs during copulation is asymmetrical because ejaculates …

Fixing Free Exercise: A Compelling Need To Relieve The Current Burdens, Eric D. Yordy Jan 2009

Fixing Free Exercise: A Compelling Need To Relieve The Current Burdens, Eric D. Yordy

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Using the dispute between the native tribes of northern Arizona and the federal government regarding land controlled by the federal government, but held sacred by Native American tribes, this Article demonstrates how the U.S. Supreme Court's 1990 decision in Employment Division v. Smith and the subsequent activities of courts and legislative bodies disrupted free exercise jurisprudence and created a quagmire of confusion related to religious freedom. The Article looks briefly at the history of the Free Exercise clause in the courts, the evisceration of free exercise jurisprudence in Smith and the subsequent enactment of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.

Web-Assisted Suicide And The First Amendment, Ellen Luu Jan 2009

Web-Assisted Suicide And The First Amendment, Ellen Luu

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

The proliferation of online social networking websites such as MySpace, Facebook, and message boards has introduced a new threat in the form of suicidepromoting cyber-speech. In countries such as the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom, individuals have used these social networks to access advertisements for suicide partners, feedback on self-murder plans, and guides on how to commit suicide. In light of claims that this cyber-speech serves the legitimate purpose of providing an open forum for discussion on such topics, is such speech protected under the First Amendment?

While the Supreme Court has upheld the prohibition of assisted suicide, …

A Viable Model And Self-Report Measure Of Spiritual Intelligence, David B. King, Teresa L. Decicco Jan 2009

A Viable Model And Self-Report Measure Of Spiritual Intelligence, David B. King, Teresa L. Decicco

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

A four-factor model of spiritual intelligence is first proposed. Supportive evidence is reviewed for the

capacities of critical existential thinking, personal meaning production, transcendental awareness,

and conscious state expansion. Based on this model, a 24-item self-report measure was developed

and modified across two consecutive studies (N = 619 and N = 304, respectively). The final version

of the scale, the Spiritual Intelligence Self-Report Inventory (SISRI-24), displayed excellent internal

reliability and good fit to the proposed model. Correlational analyses with additional measures of

meaning, metapersonal self-construal, mysticism, religiosity, and social desirability offer support

for construct and criterion-related validity. According to both …

Reconciling Modern Knowledge With Ancient Wisdom, Papalii F. Avegalio

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This paper is about an academic as well as cultural journey of (re)affirmation. Imbued with

Western knowledge, I was nearly swayed to alter my beliefs and core assumptions towards a

modern world view. I was referred to an article by Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese (hereafter Tui

Atua) which significantly assuaged the tensions of seemingly opposing values rooted in two

different world views. I realized now that in many ways, Tui Atua’s publications on Samoan

wisdom, culture and philosophy had the effect of a gentle wind tapping my shoulder. The

articles reaffirmed my sense of heritage and strengthened my resolve to …

Performing Masculinity In Paradise Lost, Kent Lehnhof Jan 2009

Performing Masculinity In Paradise Lost, Kent Lehnhof

English Faculty Articles and Research

"In Female Masculinities, Judith Halberstam objects that critical and theoretical approaches to sex/gender systems have paid too much attention to anatomy. In particular, she faults studies of masculinity for focusing almost exclusively on the white male body and its effects. By delimiting masculinity in this way, Halberstam argues, we counterproductively confine ourselves to those manifestations of masculinity with which we are already intimately familiar. Urging an ampler vision, Halberstam calls for the examination of alternative masculinities, particularly those performed by agents who are not male by birth or biology.

When we read Milton with Halberstam in mind, we realize something …

Species Richness And Host Associations Of Lepidoptera-Attacking Tachinidae In The Northeast Ecuadorian Andes, John O. Stireman Iii, Harold F. Greeney, Lee A. Dyer

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Most of the unknown biological diversity of macro-organisms remaining to be discovered and described lies in the tropical regions of the world and consists primarily of insects. Those insects with parasitoid lifestyles constitute a significant portion of insect diversity, yet parasitoids are among the most poorly known of major insect guilds in the humid tropics. Here we describe and analyze the richness of one diverse taxon of parasitoids, flies in the family Tachinidae, reared from Lepidoptera as part of a biological survey of Lepidoptera and their parasitoids in one mid-elevation (2000 m) area in the northeast Ecuadorian Andes. One hundred …

Differential Regulation Of Vitamin D Receptor (Vdr) By P53, P63 And P73, Ramakrishna Kommagani Jan 2009

Differential Regulation Of Vitamin D Receptor (Vdr) By P53, P63 And P73, Ramakrishna Kommagani

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The tumor suppressor p53 is the single most altered gene in human cancers. p53 homologues, p63 and p73 play a major role in development and in human cancer. Both p63and p73-null mice exhibit profound developmental abnormalities, suggesting a vital role for p63 and p73 in development. Although the role of p73 in human cancers is well established, the role of p63 still remains to be understood. While p63 plays a major role in development, p73 plays a major role in tumor suppression as well as in development. Although a functional co-operation is evident between each member of p53 family, additional …

Periodic Traveling Waves In Sirs Endemic Models, Tong Li, Yi Li, Herbert W. Hethcote Jan 2009

Periodic Traveling Waves In Sirs Endemic Models, Tong Li, Yi Li, Herbert W. Hethcote

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Mathematical models are used to determine if infection wave fronts could occur by traveling geographically in a loop around a region or continent. These infection wave fronts arise by Hopf bifurcation for some spatial models for infectious disease transmission with distributed-contacts. Periodic traveling waves are shown to exist for the spatial analog of the SIRS endemic model, in which the temporary immunity is described by a delay, but they do not exist in a similar spatial SIRS endemic model without a delay. Specifically, we found that the ratio of the delay ω in the recovered class and the average infectious …

Motivation: Common contemporary practice within the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) metabolomics community is to evaluate and validate novel algorithms on empirical data or simplified simulated data. Empirical data captures the complex characteristics of experimental data, but the optimal or most correct analysis is unknown a priori; therefore, researchers are forced to rely on indirect performance metrics, which are of limited value. In order to achieve fair and complete analysis of competing techniques more exacting metrics are required. Thus, metabolomics researchers often evaluate their algorithms on simplified simulated data with a known answer. Unfortunately, the conclusions obtained on simulated data are …

On Adaptive Autimation As A Solution To The Gloc Conundrum, Lloyd D. Tripp, Joel S. Warm, Gerald Matthews, Peter Y. Chiu, R. Bruce Bracken

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2009

Gravity-induced loss of consciousness (GLOC) is a major problem facing fighter pilots. In the throes of GLOC, pilots can travel 12 miles without control of their aircraft. The GLOC problem has proven to be difficult to resolve. Solutions involving repeated exposures to GLOC, G-suit pressure manipulation, intense sensory stimulation, and exposure to –G following the GLOC event have been unsuccessful. It is evident that a different approach is needed. One possibility might be an adaptive automation system to warn pilots of the imminence of a GLOC event. A key issue in adaptive automation is the cue to be employed in …

Robot Operator Specifications Derived From The Occupational Information Network, Michael D. Coovert, Linda R. Elliott

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2009

The use of robots in aviation is widespread, for use as targets, decoys, remote sensing, reconnaissance, and increasingly for combat missions. Robots come in all forms and capabilities, from handheld micro air vehicles to hypersonic versions capable of high altitude long distance missions. At the same time, ground-based robots have proven effective for both military and civilian applications such as manufacturing and remote sensing / manipulations. Certainly, Talon and Packbot robots have proven their worth in battle conditions. Just as there is great variance in the type of robot being developed and utilized, so too is there tremendous variation operator …

Effective and efficient speech communication is one of the leading factors for success of battlefield operation. With the increases in the levels of gender diversity in military services, it is important to assess the effectiveness of voice for both genders in communication systems. The purpose of this research study was to determine the effect of the speaker's voice (male and female) on the speech intelligibility (SI) performance of the Callsign Acquisition Test (CAT). In addition, the effects of synthesized speech were evaluated. The CAT test is a new SI test that has been developed for military use. A group of …
