Development Of Methodology For The Use Of Multi-Bed Sorbent Traps With Gas Chromatography Time Of Flight Mass Spectrometry, Siva Maheswara Reddy Anna Pareddy

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The lipid peroxidation of unsaturated fatty acids in cellular membranes leads to the formation of alkanes, aldehydes, alkanals, alk-2-enals, and hydroxyl alkenals. The free radicals formed during the process of lipid peroxidation can react with and damage cellular components. Lipid peroxidation is known to cause a number of diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. Various analytical methods that include spectrometric assays and chromatographic analyses of derivatized products are available for the detection of the lipid peroxidation products.

The development of rapid, non-invasive monitoring of reactions occurring in biological systems, such as cell cultures, is highly desirable, as such …

Teaching And Learning Innovation And Invention, Jonathan Schull, Xanthe Matychak, Jacob Noel-Storr Jan 2009

Teaching And Learning Innovation And Invention, Jonathan Schull, Xanthe Matychak, Jacob Noel-Storr

Presentations and other scholarship

Each quarter at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), our course on innovation and invention gathers undergraduate and graduate students from as many disciplines as possible and attempts to do something none of us (including the instructors) knows how to do. Our methodology, modeled after business startups more than traditional academic courses, produces interesting inventions and remarkable learning experiences. We will report on the first four offerings of this course at RIT, and speculate on why it works as well as it does. Class begins by presenting students with a stimulating but vague challenge that can engage all the participants (e.g., …

We want to develop in them the intelligence and compassion needed …

The Catholic Character Of Catholic Universities, Anthony J. Cernera Jan 2009

The Catholic Character Of Catholic Universities, Anthony J. Cernera

Mission & Culture Publications

The signs of the times, that we are living in the midst of, are dramatic, suggesting perhaps radical challenges, but potentially wonderful opportunities, for humanity and the Church, e.g., globalization; the pervasiveness of secularization in the Western world; the encounter with Islam and the increased importance of inter-religious dialogue; the geographical shift of the center of Catholicism; the scientific-technological revolution; the reality of the poor; and the emerging crisis of global warming are among the most significant.

As the Catholic Church emerges as a truly global church, Catholic universities have an essential role to play in its mission in the …

Untold Stories: Gender-Related Persecution And Asylum In South Africa, Lindsay M. Harris Jan 2009

Untold Stories: Gender-Related Persecution And Asylum In South Africa, Lindsay M. Harris

Journal Articles

South Africa receives more asylum seekers than any other country in the world.1 United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres proclaimed, “If you look at the policy and legal statutes of South Africa, refugees enjoy one of the most advanced and progressive systems of protection in the world today.”2 Increasing numbers of women seek South Africa’s protection. In 2006, 20.2% of asylum seekers were women; a significant increase from previous years.3 Given South Africa’s prominence in the region, its handling of female asylees and gender-related persecution claims influences the adjudication of these claims regionally and even worldwide.4

Influence Of Magnesium Nitrate On The Corrosion Performance Of Sol-Gel Coated Aa2024-T3 Aluminium Alloy, Rajath Varma, Brendan Duffy, John Cassidy Jan 2009

Influence Of Magnesium Nitrate On The Corrosion Performance Of Sol-Gel Coated Aa2024-T3 Aluminium Alloy, Rajath Varma, Brendan Duffy, John Cassidy

Articles

Traditional anti-corrosion technology has relied heavily on using reducible metal species, predominantly hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), for protecting reactive metal alloys such as aluminium which is extensively used in the aerospace sector. However, the impending changes in the use of Cr(VI) in Europe and the United States have forced aerospace manufacturers to examine alternative materials for protecting aluminium. One of the most promising alternatives being investigated are organosilane based sol-gels containing anticorrosion additives. In this work the anti-corrosion properties of magnesium (II) nitrate (Mg(NO3)2) as a inhibitor was investigated at different concentrations (0.1% - 1.0 wt %) in a methyltriethoxysilane (MTEOS) …

Learning From Litigation: What Can Lawsuits Teach Us About The Role Of Human Gene Patents In Research And Innovation, Christopher M. Holman

Faculty Works

In 2007, I published an article entitled "The Impact of Human Gene Patents on Innovation and Access: A Survey of Human Gene Patent Litigation," in which I reported the results of a project to identify and characterize all instances in which a human gene patent was asserted in a lawsuit. For the purposes of this study, I essentially treated any US patent claiming a product or process involving one or more specific human genes as a "human gene patent."

In the present article I explore in greater depth some of the implications of the 2007 study, and discuss some general …

Journal of Dental Sciences

Background/Purpose Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is a second-generation platelet concentrate which allows one to obtain fibrin membranes enriched with platelets and growth factors, after an anticoagulant-free blood harvest. However, limited information is currently available concerning the biologic effects of PRF on periodontally related cells. To provide clear evidence for the clinical use of PRF, we investigated the biologic effects of PRF on human gingival fibroblasts (GFs), periodontal ligament (PDL) cells, oral epithelial cells, and osteoblasts. Materials and methods Blood collection was carried out on 10 healthy volunteers. PRF was obtained by centrifugation at 3000 rpm for 12 minutes with a PC-02 …

Food Insecurity In Sub-Saharan Africa, Amy Rademacher Jan 2009

Food Insecurity In Sub-Saharan Africa, Amy Rademacher

Human Rights & Human Welfare

For almost half a century, Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) has been struggling, in one form or another, with food insecurity. This ongoing condition has been caused by a number of factors including distribution obstacles, global climate change, a lack of successful local agriculture, and an inability or disinterest to act by local officials. The situation has been further complicated by an inefficient and disorganized international response to the crisis. Although most would agree that each of these factors carries at least some validity, there is far less international consensus on the best remedy to the crisis.

Rational Construction By Molecular Dynamics Modeling And Simulations Of Porous Adsorbent Media For Bioseparation, Enrico Riccardi

Doctoral Dissertations

"Ion-exchange chromatography employing porous adsorbent particles or monoliths in which charged ligands are immobilized onto polymeric extender molecules grafted on the pore surfaces of a base matrix has become a very important method for bioseparations. In this dissertation, a novel fundamental and systematic methodology has been developed that uses the molecular dynamics (MD) modeling and simulation approach to rationally design, construct, and characterize polymeric porous adsorbent media and study the transport and adsorption of a charged biomolecule (desmopressin) in a representative adsorbent medium. The MD results have also been utilized in a macroscopic model to study the large-scale dynamic behavior …

Chester Himes: Experiences Stirred His Thought And His Pen, Chanté Calais Jan 2009

Chester Himes: Experiences Stirred His Thought And His Pen, Chanté Calais

XULAneXUS

An effort to research the relationship between personal experience and the imaginative work of Chester Himes, this report explores the family life and experiences that fuel the apocalyptic theme of Himes‟ short story, “Prediction.” The confused and anxious feelings of the main character, alone in a small chamber containing the collection box of a Cathedral, parallels with the position of uncertainty in Chester Himes‟ own life. While black inferiority and white dominance are depicted throughout the pages of his short story, the underlying need for change is present as well. Just as Himes‟ character believes that the only solution for …

Marketing Under Feminist Scrutiny, Andrew Harris Jan 2009

Marketing Under Feminist Scrutiny, Andrew Harris

XULAneXUS

At first glance, an ad in a magazine may appear harmless when left critically unexamined, but when studied closely, patterns start to arise that express male dominance which habitually goes unnoticed because male dominance has long been taken for granted. Laura Mulvey writes on phallocentrism in her essay entitled “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema” and explains how to recognize the distinction between men and women in popular media. The most dominant theme in her essay is that marketers depict female characters so they seem like man’s opposite, suggesting that women only exist when defined by their “castration” or penislessness. This …

Examining Conversational Constraints In Vietnamese Patient-Doctor Communication: A Case Study, Kimberly Tran Jan 2009

Examining Conversational Constraints In Vietnamese Patient-Doctor Communication: A Case Study, Kimberly Tran

XULAneXUS

The purpose of this study was to determine the use of conversational constraints among older members of the New Orleans Vietnamese community within the primary healthcare context. A purposive sample of seven Vietnamese male and five Vietnamese female immigrants between the ages of 47 and 80 was interviewed. Conversational constraints were evident in the responses relating to communication with physicians. The respondents emphasized relational conversational constraints such as minimal imposition on the physician’s autonomy, prevention of hurting the physician’s feelings, and prevention of negative evaluation by the physician. Conversely, task-oriented conversational constraints such as concern for clarity and effectiveness were …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Familial hemiplegic migraine type 1 (FHM1) is an autosomal dominant subtype of migraine with aura that is associated with hemiparesis. As with other types of migraine, it affects women more frequently than men. FHM1 is caused by mutations in the CACNA1A gene, which encodes the alpha1A subunit of Cav2.1 channels; the R192Q mutation in CACNA1A causes a mild form of FHM1, whereas the S218L mutation causes a severe, often lethal phenotype. Spreading depression (SD), a slowly propagating neuronal and glial cell depolarization that leads to depression of neuronal activity, is the most likely cause of migraine aura. Here, we have …

The Freshwater Mussels (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Unionidae) Of The Channelized Missouri River, Ellet Hoke

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The lower Missouri River has historically been viewed as a fauna! barrier for unionids due to high sediment load. However this survey of the lower (channelized) Missouri River documented the presence of 14 unionid species and the exotic Corbicula fluminea (Muller, 1774). Unionids are present in stable substrates sheltered from the effects of the river's strong currents. Analysis of early literature on the Missouri River suggests reports of an absence of unionids were not based upon thorough fieldwork, and the most commonly cited rationale for their reported absence, the high sediment load in the river, is not convincing. Pre-1938 unionid …

Impact Of The Short-Term Consumption Of A Moderately High Fat Diet On Nitric Oxide Production And Bioavailibility, Kan Huang Jan 2009

Impact Of The Short-Term Consumption Of A Moderately High Fat Diet On Nitric Oxide Production And Bioavailibility, Kan Huang

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Nitric oxide (NO) plays an essential role in the regulation of numerous biological processes. Its bioavailability is assured by a well regulated balance between NO generation and NO removal. Disruptions in this balance contribute to the pathogenesis of various diseases, including hypertension, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes mellitus and arthritis. Many factors contribute to the maintenance of NO bioavailability by controlling nitric oxide synthase (NOS) expression, NOS activity, the availability of substrates and cofactors involved in the generation of NO by NOS, levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and the formation and mobilization of NO reservoirs. Dietary factors have a significant impact …
