Treatment Barriers And Stages Of Change Among Adolescents In Psychotherapy, Heidi Mae Sliter Jan 2009

Treatment Barriers And Stages Of Change Among Adolescents In Psychotherapy, Heidi Mae Sliter

ETD Archive

One in five children and adolescents meet the criteria for psychiatric disorders each year. Of those who meet the criteria and are referred for treatment, forty to sixty percent will terminate prematurely (Nock and Kazdin, 2001). While some researchers studying this phenomenon have focused on how a client progresses through treatment and others look at dropout risk factors, no one has explored the relationship between the two. The specific purpose of this study is to provide information to the existing pool of research focusing on treatment effectiveness and completion to help provide better services to the mentally ill adolescent population …

Development Of A Novel Gradient Chromatofocusing Tandem Mass Spectometry Technique For The Determination Of Cationic Compounds In Biofluids;Identification Of Caspace 3 Cleavage Sites Of Nhe-1 By High Performance Liquid Chromatography- Mass Spectrometry, Jianhua Tang Jan 2009

Development Of A Novel Gradient Chromatofocusing Tandem Mass Spectometry Technique For The Determination Of Cationic Compounds In Biofluids;Identification Of Caspace 3 Cleavage Sites Of Nhe-1 By High Performance Liquid Chromatography- Mass Spectrometry, Jianhua Tang

ETD Archive

In Part I, work was done to develop a novel gradient chromatofocusing liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) technique for the determination of ionic compounds in biological matrix. The analysis of ionic compounds poses a great challenge to current LC-MS techniques, due to the fact that there is little or no retention. These ionic compounds are eluted at almost the same time as biological matrix, which is normally directed to waste prior to connecting to the mass spectrometer. A review of current LC-MS techniques for ionic compounds is given in Chapter 1. They all have advantages and disadvantages. To retain and …

Two Approaches For Cell Retention In Perfusion Culture Systems, Zhaowei Wang Jan 2009

Two Approaches For Cell Retention In Perfusion Culture Systems, Zhaowei Wang

ETD Archive

A lack of efficient, economical, and reliable cell retention devices has limited the application of perfusion culture systems in the biopharmaceutical industry. Two types of cell retention devices were developed in this work for long-term perfusion culture systems: a modification of an inclined gravity settler and a variation of an ultrasonic filter. Both bench-top and large-scale tests showed that the gravity settler can effectively retain viable cells and preferentially remove nonviable cells in perfusion culture systems. The viable cell retention rate can be maintained well above 90 during long-term perfusion culture period while the nonviable cell retention rate is 20-30 …

Cortical Bone Tissue Engineering;Scaffold Design And Cell Selection, Demin Wen Jan 2009

Cortical Bone Tissue Engineering;Scaffold Design And Cell Selection, Demin Wen

ETD Archive

Cortical bone tissue engineering provides a promising approach to generate graft materials needed to treat the large sized bone defects. The underling premise of tissue engineering is to mimic the in vivo microenvironment as best as possible in vitro culture system. To select an appropriate scaffold material used in this model system, mechanical and hydraulic permeability properties of 316L porous stainless steel and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) were studied, as well as their biocompatibility in short and long term cell culture. Results showed that scaffolds made of both stainless steel and PMMA: (1) could be manufactured to have similar permeability as that …

The purpose of this study is to determine if perceived stress is positively associated with cigarette dependence among a study sample of non-psychiatric participants and those diagnosed with a mental illness. A correlational survey based design was used to test five hypotheses …

The Synthesis And Characterization Of Novel Elastin-Like Polypeptides Containing An Oligomerization Domain, James T. Cole Jan 2009

The Synthesis And Characterization Of Novel Elastin-Like Polypeptides Containing An Oligomerization Domain, James T. Cole

ETD Archive

Elastin like polypeptides (ELPs) are an emerging class of biomaterials due to their unique group of chemical, physical and biological properties. We have constructed a library of ELPs based on the pentapeptide amino acid repeat sequence (GVGVP). ELPs exhibit lower critical solution temperature (LCST) transition behavior from a soluble phase below the transition temperature (Tt) to an insoluble two phase system above the transition temperature. This process is completely reversible so that ELPs can become soluble again upon lowering the temperature. This temperature can be tuned in many different ways at the molecular level by changing the composition of the …

Biological Treatment Of Dietary Supplement Wastewater, Erick Benjamin Butler Jan 2009

Biological Treatment Of Dietary Supplement Wastewater, Erick Benjamin Butler

ETD Archive

Dietary supplement wastewater contains higher order polysaccharides such as the complex sugars maltodextrin and low fat milk. These complex sugars contain a significant amount of organic carbon therefore, presence of these sugars can pose threats to the environment if discharged without treatment. While many food processing plants are required to send their waste through wastewater treatment, legislation may require preliminary treatment of these wastes in order to satisfy the effluent discharge requirements. Because of the high organic carbon presence, it would be preferable to use biological treatment methods to reduce the organics present within the system. Microorganisms are capable of …

Reading Masculinity In Virginia Woolf's The Waves, David Michael Mraz Jan 2009

Reading Masculinity In Virginia Woolf's The Waves, David Michael Mraz

ETD Archive

The Waves subtly subverts traditional notions of gender, and creates a space for divergent expressions of masculinity, specifically, the masculinity referred to in this paper relates to norms established in England during the Edwardian and Post World War I periods. In The Waves, the three male voices, Bernard, Neville and Louis, are introduced at school to a pro-imperialist vision of masculinity which is further reinforced through their relationship with the silent Percival. However, unlike Percival, the three male voice characters are either barred from the homosocial (Nevill and Louis) or are ambivalent to its production (Bernard). By employing masculinity theory …

The Case For Participatory Education, Stephen Thornton-Taylor Jan 2009

The Case For Participatory Education, Stephen Thornton-Taylor

ETD Archive

Participatory learning or "Participatory Education" as a formal declaration of either ideology or praxis has yet to be written and I would certainly not attempt to write one in the current educational capacity I now find myself in however I have found myself in the unique position of actually being first to something and so have decided to enjoin the relatively scant sketches of, as far as the great blade of written history is concerned, cutting edge economic philosophy with the over-personal, absolutely singular experience of a student-teacher in Cleveland, Ohio. The principles of Participatory Education are adapted from the …

The Examination Of Threat And Affiliative Tendencies Through Pronoun Usage In Relation To Consumer Evaluations, Sarah M. Digioia Jan 2009

The Examination Of Threat And Affiliative Tendencies Through Pronoun Usage In Relation To Consumer Evaluations, Sarah M. Digioia

ETD Archive

This study further examines the relationship between threat and affiliative tendencies. Under threat, there is a tendency to embrace others in efforts to reduce threat and uncertainty. This study explores whether product advertisements that use inclusive pronouns (e.g., we, our) lead products to be perceived as more attractive/valuable under threat (compared to low threat). Therefore, this study employs a 2 (threat: low vs. high) X 2 (ad reference frame: inclusive pronouns vs. 3rd person) between-subjects design. Data from 145 university student participants were collected. To manipulate threat, participants were told they would be taking part in a learning exercise and …

Preliminary Study Of The Narcissistic Personality Questionnaire, Ethan H. Motter

ETD Archive

This study was designed to create a new measure for narcissism. Furthermore, the NPQ will be based on the 9 DSM-IV-TR criteria for narcissism. The NPQ will be compared to the NPI with is a more established instrument of narcissism. The study examined 124 students from a certain midwestern university in north east Ohio. Results indicate that the NPQ has a higher reliability than the NPI. Additionally, the NPQ displays a high construct validity due the high correlations between the NPQ and the NPI. However, future studies should attempt to replicate the results as well as measure divergent validity in …

Communicating Forgiveness Within Adult Sibling Relationships, Sharon Apel Jan 2009

Communicating Forgiveness Within Adult Sibling Relationships, Sharon Apel

ETD Archive

The purpose of this study was to examine the role of communicating forgiveness within adult sibling relationships. Specifically, this study investigated the relationship between seeking forgiveness and attachment style, the relational outcomes of forgiveness, and forgiveness as a relational maintenance strategy. A total of 172 participants were surveyed in order to acquire as many participants as possible with adult siblings. Forgiveness seeking communication was represented by Kelley's (1998) typology of forgiveness tactics which included explicit acknowledgment, indirect tactics, and compensational-conditional tactics. In addition to Kelley's typology, a choice of "do nothing" was included to enable participants to express no forgiveness …

On The Brink Of The Waters Of Life And Truth, We Are Miserably Dying: Ralph Waldo Emerson As A Predecessor To Deconstruction And Postmodernism, Michael A. Deery Jan 2009

On The Brink Of The Waters Of Life And Truth, We Are Miserably Dying: Ralph Waldo Emerson As A Predecessor To Deconstruction And Postmodernism, Michael A. Deery

ETD Archive

Between his pivotal essays "Nature" in 1836 and "The Poet" in 1844, Ralph Waldo Emerson's increasingly negative and distrustful view of language can best be described as a precursor to deconstruction and postmodernism. Contemporary critics are too quick to dismiss a deconstructionist Emerson. There is evidence within his major essays that Emerson's understanding of language not only leads him to public and private displays of pessimism, but also to feelings of internal solipsism, agnosticism, and epistemological anxiety. Emerson demanded that mankind should utilize nature and aesthetics to experience the sublime and an immediate and original relationship with God. Yet, Emerson's …

Myf5 Does Not Induce Apoptosis In Skeletal Myoblasts But Is Regulated By Oncogenic Ras Expression, Alexander Phillip Talarico Jan 2009

Myf5 Does Not Induce Apoptosis In Skeletal Myoblasts But Is Regulated By Oncogenic Ras Expression, Alexander Phillip Talarico

ETD Archive

Skeletal myogenesis is initiated by a family of muscle regulatory factors (MRFs) composed of the transcription factors MyoD, Myf5, MRF4, and myogenin. Of these, MyoD was the first discovered, is the most studied, and plays a well-characterized role in skeletal myoblast determination and differentiation. Our laboratory has also discovered that MyoD plays an important role in the apoptotic process that occurs in a subpopulation of myoblasts induced to differentiate. Expression of oncogenic Ras is known to inhibit myoblast differentiation and to decrease the expression of MyoD mRNA and protein. Our laboratory was the first to report that expression of oncogenic …

Rat Population Assessment And Control In Eastern Suburbs Of Cleveland, Ohio, James W. Coates Jan 2009

Rat Population Assessment And Control In Eastern Suburbs Of Cleveland, Ohio, James W. Coates

ETD Archive

The Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus) is found to inhabit many urbanized areas needs to be controlled, given that it is a carrier of diseases and a source of economic damages. As harborage areas in suburbs, the rat prefers compost piles, cesspits, sewer systems, and basements that are near water. Norway rats prefer food sources such as waste disposal sites, unclean yards with trashcans, gardens, and slaughterhouses (Traweger and Slotta-Bachmayr 2004). The typical range for this species in an urban setting is 25-150 meters (27-164 yards). The research for this thesis was done in conjunction with the Cuyahoga County Board of …

Border Crossings: Transnational Americanist Anthopology, Kathleen S. Fine-Dare, Steven L. Rubenstein

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

For anthropologists and social scientists working in North and South America, the past few decades have brought considerable change as issues such as repatriation, cultural jurisdiction, and revitalization movements have swept across the hemisphere. Today scholars are rethinking both how and why they study culture as they gain a new appreciation for the impact they have on the people they study. Key to this reassessment of the social sciences is a rethinking of the concept of borders: not only between cultures and nations but between disciplines such as archaeology and cultural anthropology, between past and present, and between anthropologists and …

Channel Morphology And Bed Sediment Characteristics Before And After Habitat Enhancement Activities In The Uridil Property, Platte River, Nebraska, Water Years 2005–2008, Paul J. Kinzel

United States Geological Survey: Publications

Fluvial geomorphic data were collected by the United States Geological Survey from July 2005 to June 2008 (a time period within water years 2005 to 2008) to monitor the effects of habitat enhancement activities conducted in the Platte River Whooping Crane Maintenance Trust’s Uridil Property, located along the Platte River, Nebraska. The activities involved the removal of vegetation and sand from the tops of high permanent islands and the placement of the sand into the active river channel. This strategy was intended to enhance habitat for migratory water birds by lowering the elevations of the high islands, thereby eliminating a …

Landscape Structure Control On Soil Co2 Efflux Variability In Complex Terrain: Scaling From Point Observations To Watershed Scale Fluxes, Diego Andrés Riveros-Iregui, Brian L. Mcglynn

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

We investigated the spatial and temporal variability of soil CO2 efflux across 62 sites of a 393-ha complex watershed of the northern Rocky Mountains. Growing season (83 day) cumulative soil CO2 efflux varied from ~300 to ~2000 g CO2 m—2, depending upon landscape position, with a median of 879.8 g CO2 m—2. Our findings revealed that highest soil CO2 efflux rates were observed in areas with persistently high soil moisture (riparian meadows), whereas lower soil CO2 efflux rates were observed on forested uplands (98% of watershed area). Furthermore, upslope accumulated …

Spring Home Ranges Of White Bass In Irrigation Reservoirs Of The Republican River Basin, Nebraska, D. R. Martin, Larkin A. Powell, K. L. Pope

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Fishery biologists have documented small home ranges, relative to available habitat, for many littoral freshwater fishes. Home ranges for pelagic species, such as white bass Morone chrysops, are generally not well described, yet are thought to be large. We studied white bass movement using acoustic telemetry in two irrigation reservoirs of the Republican River basin in south-western Nebraska. Acoustic transmitters were implanted in fall of the previous year and tracking occurred a minimum of once per week throughout spring (mid-March to May) 2007 and 2008. Linear home ranges were calculated from observed locations of individual fish. Twelve of the …

Complementary And Alternative Medicine For The Allergist-Immunologist: Where Do I Start?, Renata J. M. Engler, Catherine M. With, Philip J. Gregory, Jeff M. Jellin

United States Army: Publications

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies present a growing information management challenge for physicians because nearly 40% of their patients may be using and another 50% may be considering use of CAM as part of their health care regimen. The National Health Statistics Reports for 2007 described the most commonly used nonvitamin, nonmineral therapy as natural products (eg, herbals at 17.7%). More than5% of children under the age of 18 years used CAM for allergic conditions including asthma. The amount and quality of information available and concerns about liability risk represent a challenge for most physicians. This review focuses on …

Selecting And Conserving Lands For Biodiversity: The Role Of Remote Sensing, John Wiens, Robert Sutter, Mark Anderson, Jon Blanchard, Analie Barnett, Naikoa Aguilar-Amuchastegui, Chadwick Avery, Stephen Laine Jan 2009

Selecting And Conserving Lands For Biodiversity: The Role Of Remote Sensing, John Wiens, Robert Sutter, Mark Anderson, Jon Blanchard, Analie Barnett, Naikoa Aguilar-Amuchastegui, Chadwick Avery, Stephen Laine

United States Air Force: Publications

A major focus of conservation is on protecting areas to ensure the persistence of biological diversity. Because such areas may be large, not easily accessible, subject to change, and sensitive to the surrounding landscape, remote sensing can be a valuable tool in establishing and managing protected areas. We describe three case studies to illustrate how remote sensing can contribute to setting priorities for conservation actions, monitoring the status of conservation targets, and evaluating the effectiveness of conservation strategies. In the Connecticut River watershed, remote sensing has been used to assess flood regimes and identify key areas of floodplain forests and …

Estimating Deer Abundance In Suburban Areas With Infrared-Triggered Cameras, Paul D. Curtis, Bazartseren Boldgiv, Peter M. Mattison, Jason R. Boulanger

Biology Faculty Publications

Interactions between humans and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) have become common, often resulting in management actions to mitigate negative impacts. Changes in population size are generally used to judge management actions. We examined deer population estimation techniques during 2 mark-resighting experiments in a woodland-grassland habitat in central New York State and in a suburban area. We compared program NOREMARK, Lincoln-Peterson estimates, and Jacobson’s (1997) buck:doe ratios (BDR) for estimating deer abundance. In the first field trial, we sought to validate the camera survey methods and computer applications. We used infrared-triggered cameras (IRCs) to survey a white-tailed deer population …
