Perceiving Pervasive Discrimination Over Time: Implications For Coping, Mindi D. Foster Jan 2009

Perceiving Pervasive Discrimination Over Time: Implications For Coping, Mindi D. Foster

Psychology Faculty Publications

This study suggests the effects of perceived pervasiveness may be dynamic over time. The hypothesis was that participants who perceived discrimination to be highly pervasive would initially be more likely to engage in inactive coping strategies than those who perceived low pervasiveness. However, those who continued to perceive high pervasiveness over time would ultimately show greater evidence of using active strategies than those perceiving low pervasiveness. Using a 28-day diary, women and ethnic minorities described their daily experiences of discrimination and indicated their appraisals of its pervasiveness as well as their coping strategies. Results showed that participants who initially perceived …

A System For Estimating Bowen Ratio And Evaporation From Waste Lagoons, Arturo I. Quintanar, Rezaul Mahmood, John H. Loughrin, Nanh Lovanh, Monica V. Motley Jan 2009

A System For Estimating Bowen Ratio And Evaporation From Waste Lagoons, Arturo I. Quintanar, Rezaul Mahmood, John H. Loughrin, Nanh Lovanh, Monica V. Motley

High Plains Regional Climate Center: Staff Publications

A low‐cost system was deployed above a swine waste lagoon to obtain estimates of Bowen ratios and characterize lagoon temperatures. The system consisted of humidity and temperature sensors and anemometers deployed above the lagoon, water temperature sensors, and a meteorological station located by the lagoon. To evaluate the system, data was analyzed from the 25th through 28th June 2007. Bowen ratios showed diurnal behavior near the lagoon surface characterized by negative values during day and positive ones at night. Latent (evaporation) and sensible heat fluxes were towards the atmosphere and the lagoon, respectively for most of the day. A diurnal …

Clues To The Medieval Destabilization Of The Nebraska Sand Hills, Usa, From Ancient Pocket Gopher Burrows, Rebecca L. Schmeisser, David B. Loope, David A. Wedin

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The Nebraska Sand Hills are a stabilized dune field in the central United States that reflect past conditions of drought. The most recent drought, known as the Medieval Climatic Anomaly, occurred from A.D. 900 to A.D. 1300 and had an enormous effect on the thriving prairie ecosystem, which included large populations of the plains pocket gopher (Geomys bursarius). Burrows of these organisms across a paleosol-eolian sand boundary in the Sand Hills indicate abrupt climate change during the transition from stabilized to active dune field and from humid to arid conditions. Medieval gophers tunneled at greater depths below the …

Growth Mixture Modeling Of Academic Achievement In Children Of Varying Birth Weight Risk, Kimberly A. Espy, Julia Hua Fang, David Charak, Nori Minich, H. Gerry Taylor Jan 2009

Growth Mixture Modeling Of Academic Achievement In Children Of Varying Birth Weight Risk, Kimberly A. Espy, Julia Hua Fang, David Charak, Nori Minich, H. Gerry Taylor

Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications

The extremes of birth weight and preterm birth are known to result in a host of adverse outcomes, yet studies to date largely have used cross-sectional designs and variable-centered methods to understand long-term sequelae. Growth mixture modeling (GMM) that utilizes an integrated person- and variable-centered approach was applied to identify latent classes of achievement from a cohort of school-age children born at varying birth weights. GMM analyses revealed 2 latent achievement classes for calculation, problem-solving, and decoding abilities. The classes differed substantively and persistently in proficiency and in growth trajectories. Birth weight was a robust predictor of class membership for …

Power Of Models In Longitudinal Study: Findings From A Full- Crossed Simulation Design, Hua Fang, Gordon P. Brooks, Maria L. Rizzo, Kimberly A. Espy, Robert S. Barcikowski Jan 2009

Power Of Models In Longitudinal Study: Findings From A Full- Crossed Simulation Design, Hua Fang, Gordon P. Brooks, Maria L. Rizzo, Kimberly A. Espy, Robert S. Barcikowski

Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications

Because the power properties of traditional repeated measures and hierarchical multivariate linear models have not been clearly determined in the balanced design for longitudinal studies in the literature, the authors present a power comparison study of traditional repeated measures and hierarchical multivariate linear models under 3 variance-covariance structures. The results from a full-crossed simulation design suggest that traditional repeated measures have significantly higher power than do hierarchical multivariate linear models for main effects, but they have significantly lower power for interaction effects in most situations. Significant power differences are also exhibited when power is compared across different covariance structures.

Cardiac Asystole At Birth: Is Hypovolemic Shock The Cause?, Judith S. Mercer, Debra A. Erickson-Owens, R. Skovgaard

College of Nursing Faculty Publications

A birth involving shoulder dystocia can rapidly deteriorate—from a fetus with a reassuring tracing in the minutes before birth, to a neonate needing aggressive resuscitation. Infants experiencing a traumatic birth involving shoulder dystocia may be severely compromised, even when the preceding labor was uncomplicated. This paper presents two cases in which infants had normal heart beats recorded 5–10 min before birth and were born with cardiac asystole following shoulder dystocia. Often, in cases of shoulder dystocia, infants shift blood to the placenta due to the tight compressive squeeze of the body in the birth canal (along with cord compression) and …

Global Attractivity Results For Mixed-Monotone Mappings In Partially Ordered Complete Metric Spaces, Dž Burgić, S. Kalabušić, Mustafa R. Kulenović Jan 2009

Global Attractivity Results For Mixed-Monotone Mappings In Partially Ordered Complete Metric Spaces, Dž Burgić, S. Kalabušić, Mustafa R. Kulenović

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We prove fixed point theorems for mixed-monotone mappings in partially ordered complete metric spaces which satisfy a weaker contraction condition than the classical Banach contraction condition for all points that are related by given ordering. We also give a global attractivity result for all solutions of the difference equation Zn+1 = F(zn,zn-1), n = 2, 3,…, where satisfies mixed-monotone conditions with respect to the given ordering.

Global Behavior Of Four Competitive Rational Systems Of Difference Equations In The Plane, M. Garlić-Demirović, Mustafa R. Kulenović, M. Nurkanović

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We investigate the global dynamics of solutions of four distinct competitive rational systems of difference equations in the plane. We show that the basins of attractions of different locally asymptotically stable equilibrium points are separated by the global stable manifolds of either saddle points or nonhyperbolic equilibrium points. Our results give complete answer to Open Problem 2 posed recently by Camouzis et al. (2009).

Innovative Disaster Counseling Approaches With Children And Youth, Thomas Demaria, Minna Barrett Jan 2009

Innovative Disaster Counseling Approaches With Children And Youth, Thomas Demaria, Minna Barrett

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Children and youth from all cultures are at high risk following a disaster because of their dependency on caregivers and their stage of cognitive and emotional development. Without an available caregiver to help interpret the traumatic event, most children internalize their experiences making them more vulnerable to future stressors. Traumatic events also can lead to psychological and environment dislocation of children from ethnocultural support structures and systems of meaning. Engagement of families is often a significant barrier that prevents the utilization of existing services. An innovative counseling approach is presented that was utilized following the World Trade Center terrorist attacks. …

Comparative Study On Concept Construction For Violence, Intelligence And Religion In Early Adolescence In The Parisian Suburbs, Annamária Lammel, Eduardo Márquez Jan 2009

Comparative Study On Concept Construction For Violence, Intelligence And Religion In Early Adolescence In The Parisian Suburbs, Annamária Lammel, Eduardo Márquez

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Based on association tasks, we focused our research on the process of concept construction and on the nature of the semantic structure network of three important concepts in the lives of young adolescents in the Parisian suburbs: violence, religion and intelligence. In this exploratory study, we were interested in identifying similarities and differences in the organization of these social concepts between adolescents with French parents and adolescents with immigrant parents. Despite the fact that these children share common “eco-cultural” experiences, we supposed that the different cultural guidelines in the family settings might influence the construction and the semantic organization of …

Christian Love, Material Needs, And Dependent Care: A Feminist Critique Of The Debate On Agape And ‘Special Relations', Sandra Sullivan-Dunbar

Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

THE RECENT CONVERSATION WITHIN CHRISTIAN ETHICS ABOUTTHE RELA tionship between universal obligations and particular, intensive relations—be tween agape and "special relations" —largely accepts Gene Outka's formula tion that these are separate and competing moral claims that must be balanced within the Christian moral life. I examine the relationship between agape and special relations through the lens of dependency and dependent-care rela tions. Attention to dependent care and the material needs addressed within them raises questions about the sharp division between universal and partic ular obligations. Drawing on the work of feminist philosopher Eva Feder Kit tay, I argue that an …
