Refugees In The News: A Representative Anecdote Of Identification/Division In Refugee Media Coverage, Sarah Steimel Jan 2009

Refugees In The News: A Representative Anecdote Of Identification/Division In Refugee Media Coverage, Sarah Steimel

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

A refugee worker conflict at the JBS Swift plant in Grand Island, Nebraska serves as a representative anecdote of the dominant media discourses about refugees in the United States. This study adopts a critical cultural perspective and applies Burke’s (1969) concepts of identification and division to the ways in which refugees are described in comparison to other immigrants in the media coverage of the conflict. These identifications and divisions generate ideologically powerful official roles for refugees in American society. This study finds that refugees, especially refugees who are also Muslim, are defined in the media coverage of the Grand Island …

The Effects Of Teacher Stability On Third Grade Student Achievement As Measured By The North Carolina End-Of-Grade Tests In Reading And Mathematics, Juddson W. Starling Jan 2009

The Effects Of Teacher Stability On Third Grade Student Achievement As Measured By The North Carolina End-Of-Grade Tests In Reading And Mathematics, Juddson W. Starling

Education Dissertations and Projects

This dissertation was designed to examine the effects of teacher stability on student achievement as measured by the North Carolina End-of-Grade tests in reading and mathematics for third grade students. The perceptions of third grade teachers and elementary school principals concerning issues with teacher stability were also examined. Accountability for public schools in North Carolina has driven educators to find ways to increase student achievement. Teacher stability is a variable that can be controlled by educators in an attempt to increase student achievement.

The writer gathered test data from a target school district and analyzed test scores by the number …

"One-Pot" Oligomeric A2 + B3 Approach To Branched Poly(Arylene Ether Sulfone)S: Reactivity Ratio Controlled Polycondensation, Andrea M. Elsen Jan 2009

"One-Pot" Oligomeric A2 + B3 Approach To Branched Poly(Arylene Ether Sulfone)S: Reactivity Ratio Controlled Polycondensation, Andrea M. Elsen

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The synthesis of fully soluble branched poly(arylene ether)s via an oligomeric A2 + B3 system, in which the A2 oligomers are generated in situ, is presented. This approach takes advantage of the significantly higher reactivity toward nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions, NAS, of B2, 4-Fluorophenyl sulfone, relative to B3, tris(4-Fluorophenyl) phosphine oxide. The A2 oligomers were synthesized by reaction of Bisphenol-A and B2, in the presence of the B3 unit, at temperatures between 100 and 160 °C, followed by an increase in the reaction temperature to 180 °C at which point the branching unit was incorporated. The presence of branching was …

Next Generation Transcriptomes For Next Generation Genomes Using Est2assembly, Alexie Papanicolaou, Remo Stierli, Richard H. Ffrench-Constant, David G. Heckel

Computer Science and Statistics Faculty Publications

Background: The decreasing costs of capillary-based Sanger sequencing and next generation technologies, such as 454 pyrosequencing, have prompted an explosion of transcriptome projects in non-model species, where even shallow sequencing of transcriptomes can now be used to examine a range of research questions. This rapid growth in data has outstripped the ability of researchers working on non-model species to analyze and mine transcriptome data efficiently.

Results: Here we present a semi-automated platform 'est2assembly' that processes raw sequence data from Sanger or 454 sequencing into a hybrid de-novo assembly, annotates it and produces GMOD compatible output, including …

Sand Fly Fever: What Have We Learned In One Hundred Years?, David Brett-Major, David M. Claborn

Journal Articles: Epidemiology

Sand fly fever has severely impacted military missions in southern Europe and the Middle East for hundreds of years. After a brief respite following the malaria eradication programs of World War II, it has returned as a significant disease among residents in and travelers to the Mediterranean rim. It is a more severe disease now, with potential vectors in the United States. Sand fly fever is discussed in terms of its viruses, vectors, disease, control, and potential domestic impact.

Identification Of Transnational Threats, Stephen R. Bowers, Stephen M. Parke Jan 2009

Identification Of Transnational Threats, Stephen R. Bowers, Stephen M. Parke

Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the past, the starting point for threat identification was the nation state. Today, national boundaries have lost much of their significance and global forces lacking identifiable national frontiers represent a real threat to US security.

New technologies have facilitated the development of advanced terrorist methodologies and tactics.

A new and increasingly significant threat is hostile forces which operate within the borders of states which are friendly to the United States.

American universities are increasingly vulnerable to new transnational threats by virtue of the opportunities they present for acquisition of dual use technological skills.

With its new cellular structure, terrorism …

The Role Of Landscape Connectivity In Assembling Exotic Plant Communities: A Network Analysis, Emily S. Minor, Samantha M. Tessel, Katharina A.M. Engelhardt, Todd R. Lookingbill

Geography and the Environment Faculty Publications

Landscape fragmentation and exotic species invasions are two modern-day forces that have strong and largely irreversible effects on native diversity worldwide. The spatial arrangement of habitat fragments is critical in affecting movement of individuals through a landscape, but little is known about how invasive species respond to landscape configuration relative to native species. This information is crucial for managing the global threat of invasive species spread. Using network analysis and partial Mantel tests to control for covarying environmental conditions, we show that forest plant communities in a fragmented landscape have spatial structure that is best captured by a network representation …

Re-Shaping The Common Good In Times Of Public Health Emergencies: Validating Medical Triage, George P. Smith Ii Jan 2009

Re-Shaping The Common Good In Times Of Public Health Emergencies: Validating Medical Triage, George P. Smith Ii

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

This article discusses the utilitarian principle of triage in the context of governmental response to national disasters, while analyzing the delicate balance between individual liberties and the government actions necessary to promote the common good. The author examines competing conceptions of the common good, and posits that a new philosophy is required for public health emergencies in order to promote balanced and normative standards of conduct necessary for consensus-based decision-making in times of national emergency. The author then demonstrates that the principal of medical triage is a valid construct for the distribution of scarce resources during national emergencies, tests this …

In Vitro Studies On Metabolism Of Salvinorin A, Lukasz M. Kutrzeba, Vardan T. Karamyan, Robert C. Speth, John S. Williamson, Jordan K. Zjawiony

Office for Research Publications and Presentations

Microbial transformation of natural products is a well established model for mammalian metabolism. Salvinorin A, a diterpenoid isolated from the hallucinogenic mint Salvia divinorum Epling & Játiva-M (Lamiaceae), is a potent non-nitrogenous κ-opioid receptor agonist. The metabolism of salvinorin A has still not yet been well established. Thirty fungal species were screened for the ability to metabolize salvinorin A. We observed that salvinorin A undergoes fast hydrolysis of the acetate group at carbon atom C2, resulting in formation of the pharmacologically inactive product, salvinorin B. Ex vivo experiments were also performed using organelle fractions isolated from rat liver and brain. …

Prizes For Innovation Of New Medicines And Vaccines, James Love, Tim Hubbard Jan 2009

Prizes For Innovation Of New Medicines And Vaccines, James Love, Tim Hubbard

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

This article argues that prizes can help stimulate medical innovation, control costs and ensure greater access to new medicines and vaccines. The authors explore four increasingly ambitious prize options to reward medical innovation, each addressing flaws in the current patent system. The first option promotes innovation through a large prize fund linked to the impact on health outcomes; the second option rewards the sharing of knowledge, data, and technology with open source dividends; the third option awards prizes for interim benchmarks and discrete technical problems; and the final option removes the exclusive right to use patented inventions in upstream research …

The Hidden Injuries Of Overloading 'Adt, Duane Buck, David J. Stucki Jan 2009

The Hidden Injuries Of Overloading 'Adt, Duane Buck, David J. Stucki

Mathematics Faculty Scholarship

The most commonly stated definition of abstract data type (ADT) is that it is a domain of values and the operations over that domain. So, for example, a language's built-in types, like int are seen to be ADTs. It is our opinion that a pure interpretation of this definition yields a semantics in which using an ADT is the same as using built-in types: the operations are side effect free and there is no concern over alias, shallow copy or synchronization problems. Unfortunately, the term abstract data type has over time been associated with at least three distinct meanings, and …

Options For National Parks And Reserves For Adapting To Climate Change, Jill S. Baron, Lance Gunderson, Craig D. Allen, Erica Fleishman, Donald Mckenzie, Laura A. Meyerson, Jill Oropeza, Nate Stephenson

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Past and present climate has shaped the valued ecosystems currently protected in parks and reserves, but future climate change will redefine these conditions. Continued conservation as climate changes will require thinking differently about resource management than we have in the past; we present some logical steps and tools for doing so. Three critical tenets underpin future management plans and activities: (1) climate patterns of the past will not be the climate patterns of the future; (2) climate defines the environment and influences future trajectories of the distributions of species and their habitats; (3) specific management actions may help increase the …

Forest Grazing And Natural Regeneration In A Late Successional Broadleaved Community Forest In Bhutan, Bill Buffum, Georg Gratzer, Yeshi Tenzin Jan 2009

Forest Grazing And Natural Regeneration In A Late Successional Broadleaved Community Forest In Bhutan, Bill Buffum, Georg Gratzer, Yeshi Tenzin

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

This study investigated the sustainability of combining forest grazing and timber harvesting with selection felling in a cool broadleaved community forest (CF) in Bhutan. Forest grazing and timber production are critical livelihood activities for many farmers throughout the world, so it is important to understand under what conditions the 2 activities can be combined. The study was based on a household survey to quantify livestock holdings and grazing patterns, a comparison of 2 forest inventories to assess forest structure and regeneration, and a study of stumps to quantify harvesting intensities. During a 5-year period the number of cattle grazing inside …

Believing In Both Genetic Determinism And Behavioral Action: A Materialist Framework And Implications, Celeste Condit, Marita Gronnvoll, Jamie Landau, Lijiang Shen, Lanelle Wright, Tina M. Harris

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

A disparity exists between studies reporting that genetics discourse produces deterministic or fatalistic responses and studies reporting that the majority of laypeople do not hold or adopt genetically deterministic views. This article reports data from an interview study (n = 50), and an interpretation of those data grounded in materialist understandings of discourse, that explains at least part of the disparity. The article employs a detailed reading of an illustrative transcript embedded in a quantitative content analysis to suggest that laypeople have incorporated two sets of public discourses—one that describes genetic causation and another that describes behavioral causation. These different …

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

Parasitoid releases against the birch leafminer Fenusa pusilla (Lepeletier) (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae) in eastern North America began in 1974, with releases in eastern Canada, followed by others in the Middle Atlantic States and New England. Of 4 parasitoids released, only 1, the ichneumonid Lathrolestes nigricollis (Thompson), established and spread widely. Studies of its preliminary impacts were made in several locations in the 1980s and 1990s, but full impact of the parasitoid on host density was not yet achieved in that period. Here we report results of surveys in 7 states (MA, CT, RI, NY, PA, NJ, DE) in 2007 documenting the …

Female Investors And Securities Fraud: Is The Reasonable Investor A Woman?, Joan Macleod Heminway Jan 2009

Female Investors And Securities Fraud: Is The Reasonable Investor A Woman?, Joan Macleod Heminway

Scholarly Works

This paper extends existing scholarship that questions the existing materiality standard used under Rule 10b-5 (and elsewhere in U.S. securities regulation) and its touchstone notion of the reasonable investor. Specifically, the paper asks and answers a seemingly straightforward, yet provocative, question: Is the reasonable investor a woman? The paper then preliminarily explores the potential significance of its key findings - that women and men exhibit different investment behaviors and achieve different investment outcomes, and that the resulting female investor profile is closer to existing conceptions of the reasonable investor than the resulting male investor profile.

As women become larger players …
