The Relationship Between Resilience And Body Image In College Women, Robert J. Mcgrath, Wiggin Julie, Rosemary M. Caron Jan 2009

The Relationship Between Resilience And Body Image In College Women, Robert J. Mcgrath, Wiggin Julie, Rosemary M. Caron

Health Management & Policy

Possessing a negative body image is associated with unhealthy eating habits and eating disorders in college women and has been linked to depression and negative feelings of self worth. Limited research exists on protective factors that have the potential to mitigate body image dissatisfaction. This paper examines the relationship of resilience to body image dissatisfaction in college women. Female, undergraduate college students were studied using previously validated measures. Results indicate that increased resilience is associated with improved body image.

Sustainable Food Systems: Perspectives On Transportation Policy, Kameshwari Pothukuchi, Richard Wallace Jan 2009

Sustainable Food Systems: Perspectives On Transportation Policy, Kameshwari Pothukuchi, Richard Wallace

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Research Publications

Global agri-food and transportation systems have dramatically expanded food production and distribution worldwide. This integration, however, also adversely affects human health. The negative effects arise from unequal access to healthy food, unequal access to transportation for agri-food workers, increasing geospatial and economic concentration in the agri-food industry, and an emerging competition between food and fuel. Because the health of individuals is inextricably tied to the health of communities, regions, and ecological systems, health and transportation professionals need to act to both mitigate current disparities and enhance the future viability and sustainability of these systems. This paper offers numerous, specific recommendations …

The Long-Lasting Effects Of International Study Abroad Programs On College Graduates, Mary Katharine Rousopoulos Jan 2009

The Long-Lasting Effects Of International Study Abroad Programs On College Graduates, Mary Katharine Rousopoulos

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

Do the short-term effects of international study abroad programs (ISAPs) during the college undergraduate years continue post college? To determine whether ISAP participants perceive these benefits as long lasting, six college graduates from a small, mid-western, faith-based university were interviewed about their experience studying abroad. With the chance to share perceptions of their changed understanding or actions, the interviews focused on the following areas: career choice, personal values and behavior changes, relationships, spiritual growth, and intellectual knowledge. Results indicate that college graduates do perceive a number of lasting changes related to their time studying abroad.

Examining Theoretical Predicators Of Substance Use Among A Sample Of Incarcerated Youth, David May, Kelly Cooper, Irina R. Soderstrom, G. Roger Jarjoura Jan 2009

Examining Theoretical Predicators Of Substance Use Among A Sample Of Incarcerated Youth, David May, Kelly Cooper, Irina R. Soderstrom, G. Roger Jarjoura

Safety, Security and Emergency Management Faculty and Staff Scholarship

A wide variety of theoretical perspectives have been found to have an association with substance abuse. Most of these studies use data from samples of public school students and thus capture only part of the youth population. Using data from approximately 800 delinquents incarcerated in a Midwestern state, we examine the association between attitudes about drug and alcohol use and use of drugs and four theoretical perspectives: nonsocial reinforcement theory, social learning theory, social control theory, and strain theory. Our findings suggest that nonsocial reinforcement is the best predictor of both preference for and use of illegal substances among this …

Traditional Culture: A Step Forward For Protection In Indonesia, Peter A. Jaszi Jan 2009

Traditional Culture: A Step Forward For Protection In Indonesia, Peter A. Jaszi

Traditional Knowledge and Culture

Traditional Culture: A Step Forward for Protection in Indonesia is the culmination of research conducted as part of a group of scholars, journalists, and observers of the arts who made multiple trips to Central Java and Bali to look at the practice of certain “traditional” arts. These arts—Javanese wayang kulit, gamelan music, and batik, and Balinese dance, gamelan music, and ikat—have, like most Indonesian arts, historically operated without Intellectual Property (IP) regulation. Professor Jazsi met with artists, performers, and creators to discuss their concerns regarding the current state of their arts, and to explore possibilities for attribution and compensation for …

Physics and Astronomy

The effectiveness and mechanism of a low temperature air plasma torch in clotting blood are explored. Both blood droplets and smeared blood samples were used in the tests. The treated droplet samples reveal how blood clotting depends on the distance at which the torch operated, and for how long the droplets have been exposed to the torch. Microscopy and cell count of smeared blood samples shed light on dependencies of erythrocyte and platelet counts on torch distance and exposure time. With an increase of torch distance, the platelet count of treated blood samples increases but is less than that of …

A Comparison And Validation Of Four Aquatic Macrophyte-Based Lake Assessment Techniques, John Brittenham Jan 2009

A Comparison And Validation Of Four Aquatic Macrophyte-Based Lake Assessment Techniques, John Brittenham

Master of Environmental Science (MES) Theses

Lake macrophyte assemblages in northeast Indiana were examined to compare the ability of four aquatic macrophyte-based lake assessment techniques to detect lake quality using two independent measures of human disturbance and one measure of water quality. Study objectives were to test the relationship of the four lake assessment techniques to the three measures of human disturbance or water quality, test the relationship of the four lake assessment techniques to each other, and to determine which lake assessment technique was the most time and resource efficient. Lake vegetation was sampled using two techniques. The first was a rake-based, stratified, random sampling …

Climate Change And The World’S “Sacred Sea”—Lake Baikal, Siberia, Marianne V. Moore, Stephanie E. Hampton, Lyubov R. Izmest'eva, Eugene A. Silow, Ekaterina V. Peshkova, Boris K. Pavlov Jan 2009

Climate Change And The World’S “Sacred Sea”—Lake Baikal, Siberia, Marianne V. Moore, Stephanie E. Hampton, Lyubov R. Izmest'eva, Eugene A. Silow, Ekaterina V. Peshkova, Boris K. Pavlov

Biological Sciences Faculty Scholarship

Lake Baikal—the world's largest, oldest, and most biotically diverse lake—is responding strongly to climate change, according to recent analyses of water temperature and ice cover. By the end of this century, the climate of the Baikal region will be warmer and wetter, particularly in winter. As the climate changes, ice cover and transparency, water temperature, wind dynamics and mixing, and nutrient levels are the key abiotic variables that will shift, thus eliciting many biotic responses. Among the abiotic variables, changes in ice cover will quite likely alter food-web structure and function most because of the diverse ways in which ice …

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

This case describes a real family that has been running a labor-intensive business since 1992. The father, Phil Mason, runs the business with the help of his wife and two of his sons in southwestern Rhode Island. The business is a franchisee of ServiceMaster Clean. In 2006, the franchise employed 20 full-time employees and was the 50th largest ServiceMaster Clean franchise among the approximately 1,200 franchises located in the United States. Annual revenue is approximately $2.5 million. In late 2005, one of Phil’s sons began researching the biodiesel industry. As he was growing weary of the labor-intensive nature of his …

Stress Training Efficacy In An Aviation Context, Christopher K. Mcclernon Jan 2009

Stress Training Efficacy In An Aviation Context, Christopher K. Mcclernon

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2009

Stress is regularly introduced in training to prepare troops for stressful environments and situations, although there is very little empirical evidence for stress training's effectiveness, implementation and pedagogy. Twenty novice participants were recruited and assigned to either a stress-trained (cold pressor), treatment group or a control group. Stress training was effective at improving the treatment group’s performance during a final criterion session on an aircraft navigation task compared to the control group. In addition, the stress-trained group showed lower criterion heart rate variability, skin conductance, and subjective stress ratings compared to the control group. This research demonstrates stress training as …

Mayer, Mashkoor A. Malik, Andrew B. Cooper, Holly A. Abeels, Jennifer K. Greene, Melissa A. Brodeur, Andrew A. Rosenberg

Biological Sciences

The recovery of benthic communities inside the western Gulf of Maine fishing closure area was evaluated by comparing invertebrate assemblages at sites inside and outside of the closure four to six years after the closure was established. The major restriction imposed by the closure was a year-round prohibition of bottom gillnets and otter trawls. A total of 163 seafloor sites (similar to half inside and half outside the closure) within a 515-km(2) study area were sampled with some combination of Shipek grab, Wildco box corer, or underwater video. Bottom types ranged from mud (silt and clay) to boulders, and the …

Good Agricultural And Handling Practices For Grapes And Other Fresh Produce, Pamela L. Brady, Justin R. Morris Jan 2009

Good Agricultural And Handling Practices For Grapes And Other Fresh Produce, Pamela L. Brady, Justin R. Morris

AAES Research Reports and Research Bulletins

In recent years consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables has increased dramatically. This trend has increased the amount of produce being purchased at farmer’s markets, road-side stands, and neighborhood markets since consumers say they feel that the direct contact with growers at these markets makes them better able to assess the quality and safety of the produce. This buying trend has opened new markets to small- and medium-sized farms, which sell at these local outlets.
