Unemployment Insurance: A Safety Net For Victims Of Intimate Partner Violence And Their Children, Marybeth J. Mattingly, Laura Dugan
Unemployment Insurance: A Safety Net For Victims Of Intimate Partner Violence And Their Children, Marybeth J. Mattingly, Laura Dugan
Carsey Publications
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that over 5 million intimate partner assaults are perpetrated against women each year, and they lose more than 8 million days of work annually. Expanding Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits to victims of domestic violence is one mechanism for supporting women as they seek to escape the violence in their lives.

Rural Community Characteristics, Economic Hardship, And Peer And Parental Influences In Early Adolescent Alcohol Use, Laura De Haan, Tina Boljevac, Kurt Schaefer
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
The study explores how differences in rural community contexts relate to early adolescent alcohol use. Data were gathered from 1,424 adolescents in the sixth through eighth grades in 22 rural Northern Plains communities, as well as 790 adults, parents, teachers, and community leaders. Multilevel modeling analyses revealed that community supportiveness, as perceived by adolescents, but not adults, was associated with less lifetime and past month alcohol use, and for past month use, this relationship was stronger than perceived peer drinking or parental closeness. Perceived peer drinking and parental closeness were not associated with past month use. Adolescents experiencing family economic …

College Students' Crime-Related Fears On Campus: Are Fear-Provoking Cues Gendered?, David May, Bonnie S. Fisher
Safety, Security and Emergency Management Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Gender plays a central role in the study of crime-related fear as does the description of various fear-provoking cues in the environment. Despite the ever-growing body of crime-related fear research, few researchers have examined which fear-provoking cues, if any, are gendered. Using a large sample of undergraduates from a public university, this article explores the gendered nature of fear-provoking cues and crime-related fears while on campus. Bivariate and multivariate results suggest that fear-provoking cues are not gendered for fear of larceny-theft or fear of assault. These results inform the fear of crime research on a number of dimensions and have …

An Assessment Of Democratic Policing In The Turkish National Police: Police Officials' Attitudes Toward Recent Police Reforms, Akin Karatay
An Assessment Of Democratic Policing In The Turkish National Police: Police Officials' Attitudes Toward Recent Police Reforms, Akin Karatay
Dissertations
This study defines democracy, describes democratic policing, analyzes the development of democratic policing principles in the developing country of Turkey and contends that democracy can be enduring only when the police embody democratic values. As Turkey transforms itself in order to become a member of the European Union, the process has fostered national, institutional, cultural and socioeconomic adaptations, all of which lead towards democracy. This process has influenced the Turkish National Police (TNP) as well. In theory, these efforts towards political democratization, legal reform and the adoption of European Union police policy guidelines should have a positive effect on Turkish …

The high rate of crime in American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities and/or against AI/AN people reflected in numerous studies in the last three decades, demonstrates the need for victim assistance programs in Indian Country to help victims cope with and heal from violent crime (Wolk 1982; Allen 1985; Sacred Shawl Women’s Society, no date; McIntire 1988; DeBruyn, Lujan & May 1995; Norton & Manson 1995; Fairchild et. al 1998; Greenfield & Smith 1999; Alba, Zieseniss, et al 2003; Perry 2004). Peace and Conflict Studies
This article examines the views of ninety-eight study participants on community development and peacebuilding supported by the European Union (EU) Peace II Fund and the International Fund for Ireland (IFI). We elaborate the perceptions of community group leaders, funding agency civil servants and development officers regarding the role of both funds in Northern Ireland. Their experiences of the EU Peace II Fund and the IFI are discussed in the wider context of peacebuilding and reconciliation in Northern Ireland and the Border Counties. Furthermore, this article explores the importance of community development and cross-community contact through joint economic and social development …

Parental Divorce: A Protection From Later Delinquency For Maltreated Children, Christopher A. Mallett, Patricia A. Stoddard Dare
Social Work Faculty Publications
Family structure and maltreatment (abuse and neglect) have been identified as predictors of youth delinquency, although the relationship is not clear. This article furthers this research by studying a sample of maltreated children (n = 250) in one Midwest county, and through a multiple regression analysis of many risk factors, the study identified only one significant delinquency variable that made delinquency less likely—children who experience parental divorce. Some established risk factors were surprisingly found not to be predictive of later delinquency: minority race, one-parent families, youth substance abuse, recurrent maltreatment, and youth behind in academic grade level. Implications for the …

Criminal Law As A Constitutive Strategy: The Colombian Case, Farid Samir Benavides Vanegas
Criminal Law As A Constitutive Strategy: The Colombian Case, Farid Samir Benavides Vanegas
Research Papers
In this text I analyze the role criminal law has played in the production of subaltern subjectivities in Colombia. Criminal law and criminological discourse have been important to control subaltern groups and to constitute their identities. Colombian elites have appealed to criminal law to solve their social problems, in a strategy that has been labeled as laws symbolic efficiency or as 'penal efficienticism'.'

Impunidade No Sistema De Justiça Criminal Brasileiro: Uma Revisão Dos Estudos Produzidos Sobre O Tema, Ludmila Ribeiro
Research Papers

Enduring Violence In The Lives Of Formerly Incarcerated Women: A Study In Individual Survival And Societal Indifference, Diane Miller Johnson
Enduring Violence In The Lives Of Formerly Incarcerated Women: A Study In Individual Survival And Societal Indifference, Diane Miller Johnson
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Women in the United States who are released from prison face multiple obstacles in their efforts to establish stable lives outside the criminal justice system. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, more than half of the women released from jail are rearrested within three years. Increasingly, research has documented the substantial likelihood that women who become incarcerated have childhood and adult histories of physical and sexual abuse and poverty. This qualitative study examines the “lived experience” of violence in the lives of formerly incarcerated women during three periods in their lives: childhood, adulthood and incarceration. An analysis of 41 …

To Catch An Entrapper: The Inadequacy Of The Entrapment Defense Globally And The Need To Reevaluate Our Current Legal Rubric, Paul W. Valentine
Pace International Law Review Online Companion
It is fair to say that a majority of us have either seen or been exposed to the hit television show To Catch a Predator on NBC. To Catch a Predator is a series of hidden investigations by the television newsmagazine Dateline NBC devoted to the subject of identifying and detaining potential child sexual abusers who contact children over the internet. The show is important because those caught by the investigators oftentimes raise the entrapment defense, but to no avail. Given the emergence of internet sting operations and covert government investigations, it is now more important than ever that the …
Hierarchical Constraints And The Choices Judges Make: Judicial Decision-Making At The U.S. Courts Of Appeals, Maxwell H. H. Mak
Hierarchical Constraints And The Choices Judges Make: Judicial Decision-Making At The U.S. Courts Of Appeals, Maxwell H. H. Mak
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The conventional wisdom is that judges at the U.S. Courts of Appeals are constrained decision-makers. Serving as the immediate subordinate to the U.S. Supreme Court, circuit court judges must adjudicate cases in a manner consistent with precedents and doctrines established by the justices. Thus, it is not surprising that previous research generally concludes that circuit court judges comply. Although previous research has done much to enhance the understanding of lower court compliance with the Supreme Court, two often missing components are examinations of the conditions under which judges are indeed constrained and the manner in which such constraint should be …
