Making Hope And Hard Work Matter : What Does It Take To Be An African-American Male And A High Achieving Senior At An Urban Public High School, Lashauna Cutts
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
The purpose of this exploratory, flexible methods study was to understand how high-achieving urban African-American male high school students are able to excel despite environmental factors faced at school, home, and in their community. The research questions that guided this study are: (1) what impact do the school, peer, family, and community environments have on the resiliency of high-achieving Black male youth who attend a school in a high poverty area? (2) What relationships and support systems shape the behaviors, attitudes, and aspirations of African-American male students who reside in an urban environment? The sample pool was comprised of sixteen …
A Multivariate Analysis Of The Sociodemographic Predictors Of Methamphetamine Production And Use, Todd A. Armstrong, Gaylene Armstrong
A Multivariate Analysis Of The Sociodemographic Predictors Of Methamphetamine Production And Use, Todd A. Armstrong, Gaylene Armstrong
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
To date, research testing the community characteristics associated with methamphetamine production and use has found that the community-level sociodemographic predictors of methamphetamine production and use vary from those of drug use in general. In this study, the authors furthered the research in this area using data from all 102 counties in Illinois. These data included measures of sociodemographic characteristics taken from the U.S. census, measures of methamphetamine production and use, and a measure of arrests for controlled-substance violations. Negative binomial regression models showed that poverty and the racial and ethnic compositions of communities were the strongest and most consistent predictors …
Mental Health And Developmental Factors Related To Juvenile Adjudicative Competence, Tracy Ann Donsky
Mental Health And Developmental Factors Related To Juvenile Adjudicative Competence, Tracy Ann Donsky
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
The current study assessed factors associated with competency to stand trial (CST) for 134 male juvenile offenders. Written reports of each juvenile's competency evaluation provided data on age, educational and family background, mental health, types of offense, and understanding of the juvenile justice system. Various differences emerged between 10-15 and 16-18 year age groups, including behavioral and developmental issues for younger youth, and school and substance use problems among older youth. Psychosis, paternal presence, and understanding of court roles and procedures differentiated the youth determined to be competent to proceed to trial versus those who were not. To a less …

Assessing The Benefits Of Practicing Spirituality Or Religion While Incarcerated : A Study Of Formerly Incarcerated Men In Texas, Jana Lynn Wu
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This qualitative study explored former prisoners' beliefs regarding the benefits of practicing spirituality or religion during their time of incarceration. The prison population is seldom included in mainstream research studies. Additionally, a personal relationship to religion and spirituality is a difficult phenomenon to quantify in a standardized and formulaic way. This research sought to explore if spirituality or religion can be considered a protective factor during a time of incarceration. This study was conducted with face-to-face interviews, using both demographic and narrative questions. A qualitative, flexible research method design was used to gather and analyze data from 13 former male …

The Formation Of "Outsider" Through Labeling And Sentence Lengths For Immigrants Of Hispanic Descent., Jeremy Jason Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if individuals who supported denying citizenship to children of foreign parentage and making English the sole language spoken in the United States held the opinion that a sentence length over 15 years was appropriate for non-U.S. individuals. Other purposes were to determine if individuals with high religiosity or who carried a lethal weapon also held the opinion that a sentence length over 15 years was appropriate for non-U.S. individuals.
Pearson's Chi-Square was used to determine if a significant relationship existed between the independent variables and the dependent variable. The data indicated that …

Attempt, Conspiracy, And Incitement To Commit Genocide, Jens David Ohlin
Attempt, Conspiracy, And Incitement To Commit Genocide, Jens David Ohlin
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
In these brief commentaries to the U.N. Genocide Convention, I explore three criminal law modes of liability as they apply to the international crime of genocide. Part I analyzes attempt to commit genocide and uncovers a basic tension over whether attempt refers to the genocide itself (the chapeau) or the underlying offense (such as killing). Part I concludes that the tension stems from the fact that the crime of genocide itself is already inchoate in nature, since the legal requirements for the crime do not require an actual, completed genocide, in the common-sense understanding of the term, but only a …

Classifying And Assessing The Effectiveness Of Judicial Procedures In Mississippi Community Colleges, Edward Rice
Classifying And Assessing The Effectiveness Of Judicial Procedures In Mississippi Community Colleges, Edward Rice
Theses and Dissertations
This study classified and compared the judicial procedures that mirrored the criminal justice system with judicial procedures that were less formal and more student-oriented. The judicial procedures of Mississippi’s Community and Junior Colleges are the focus of the study. Each school’s judicial procedure was classified and placed on a continuum based upon its formality. Formality was determined by analyzing the terminology, characteristics and structure of an institution’s judicial procedure. After each school’s judicial procedure was classified, various outcomes (total number of cases adjudicated, total number of appeals filed, number of sanctions overturned by appeal, the rate of recidivism, and lawsuits …
