The Culture Of Poverty: How It Affects Middle School Students, Kaycie Anne Tuttle Aug 2009

The Culture Of Poverty: How It Affects Middle School Students, Kaycie Anne Tuttle

All Graduate Projects

In education, teachers are seeing more impoverished students than ever before. With that understanding, teachers need to know how to identify and assist these students so that they are successful in school. The War on Poverty has been going on for years, and with a failing economy, teachers are seeing more impoverished students in their classrooms. To counteract this situation, teachers will be shown a pamphlet, power point presentation, and a workshop on poverty which will help show teachers what their students may be experiencing when away from school. In addition, the pamphlet will provide information of what to look …

Genocide Prevention And International Law, Martin Mennecke Aug 2009

Genocide Prevention And International Law, Martin Mennecke

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

The recently published report Preventing Genocide: A Blueprint for U.S. Policymakers (the Albright-Cohen Report) is a welcome addition to the growing efforts to realize the often invoked promise, ‘‘Never again.’’1 In fact, it constitutes the first attempt to translate the existing research on genocide prevention into a policy guide for decision makers, and it deserves praise for taking this step. In particular, from a European perspective, one would hope that institutions and actors such as the Imperial War Museum in London, the International Task Force for Holocaust Education, Research and Remembrance, and the Stiftung fu ̈ r Wissenschaft und Politik …

Talking Us Into War: Problem Definition By Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson And George W. Bush, Barbara Ellen May Warner Aug 2009

Talking Us Into War: Problem Definition By Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson And George W. Bush, Barbara Ellen May Warner

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

How presidents talk us into war merges the study of problem definition in public policy with the study of rhetoric in communications. Using both qualitative and quantitative methods, this research analyzes the key words used by two presidents, Lyndon B. Johnson and George W. Bush, to persuade us into escalating a war in Vietnam and engaging in a pre-emptive war in Iraq, respectively. The findings indicate that presidents repeat words that are patriotic, emotive, metaphorical, symbolic and religious, tapping into American themes of Manifest Destiny and even predicting dire outcomes if we do not accept their definitions of the dangers …

Paranoid Personality Has A Dimensional Latent Structure: Taxometric Analyses Of Community And Clinical Samples, John F. Edens, David K. Marcus, Leslie C. Morey Aug 2009

Paranoid Personality Has A Dimensional Latent Structure: Taxometric Analyses Of Community And Clinical Samples, John F. Edens, David K. Marcus, Leslie C. Morey

Faculty Publications

Although paranoid personality is one of the most commonly diagnosed personality disorders and is associated with numerous negative life consequences, relatively little is known about the structural properties of this condition. This study examines whether paranoid personality traits represent a latent dimension or a discrete class (i.e., taxon). In Study 1, the authors conducted taxometric analyses of paranoid personality disorder criteria in a sample of 731 patients participating in the Collaborative Longitudinal Study of Personality Disorders project (Gunderson et al., 2000) who had been administered a semistructured diagnostic interview for personality disorders according to criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical …

Policing In Schools: Developing A Governance Document For School Resource Officers In K-12 Schools, India Geronimo Thusi, Catherine Y. Kim

Books & Book Chapters by Maurer Faculty

This White Paper argues that a formal governance document is necessary to ensure that law enforcement, school officials, and the communities they serve have a shared understanding of the goals of the SRO program, and that these officers receive the necessary support and training prior to their deployment.6 Absent specific guidelines, SROs may not have a clear understanding of their role within the larger educational context or the rights and needs of the children they are intended to serve; they may inadvertently, and indeed counterproductively, create an adversarial environment that pushes students, particularly at-risk students, out of school rather than …

Examining Attitudes And Perceptions Of Sexual Harassment On A University Campus: What Role Do Myths And Stereotypes Play?, Courtney Crittenden Aug 2009

Examining Attitudes And Perceptions Of Sexual Harassment On A University Campus: What Role Do Myths And Stereotypes Play?, Courtney Crittenden

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The attitudes reflecting the apathy our society feels toward sexual harassment is indicated throughout our culture. Many studies focusing on attitudes toward sexual harassment and attitudes toward women have shown the need for continued research. The current study examined attitudes toward sexual harassment and compared them to other attitudes toward women and rape myth acceptance because of increasing evidence that these attitudes are complex and require further study. Three research questions were sought to be answered through this research: 1) Does sexual harassment education/training have an affect on respondent’s acceptance of sexual harassment; 2) Do male and female respondents hold …

Legislating For The Provision Of Comprehensive Substance Abuse Treatment Programs For Pregnant And Mothering Women, Janet W. Steverson, Traci Rieckman Phd

Duke Journal of Gender Law & Policy

Additionally, in writing this article it became clear that, although the data collection in this area has improved over the past twenty years, more specific data is needed in order to have a clearer picture of the exact nature of the unmet need so that the states can better address it. [...] although the authors were able to obtain enough information to provide some suggestions to the states for providing treatment programs for pregnant and mothering women, work in the area is severely limited by the lack of accessible data.

Correlates Of Intake And Disposition Decisions By Child Protective Services Professionals., Lisa Michele Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined intake and post-investigative disposition decision making among professionals engaged in child protective services to understand disproportionality and disparities in the child welfare system. Using child welfare, decision making, and attribution theories as a framework, a multivariate 2x2x2 factorial vignette design was used to examine intake and post-investigative disposition decision making among 400 child protective caseworkers and supervisors employed in a Midwestern state. Data were gathered through an online self-administered survey. Among the key variables of interest--race, socio-economic status, and family structure--only the family's socio-economic status was found to influence the intake decision but none were associated with …

Failures To Prevent Genocide In Rwanda (1994), Srebrenica (1995), And Darfur (Since 2003), Fred Grünfeld, Wessel Vermeulen

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

This article presents the results of a comparative study of genocide prevention showing similarities that form a disappointing pattern of failure on the part of third parties to prevent genocide in three different situations: Rwanda, Srebrenica, and Darfur. Early, clear, and reliable warnings combined with a policy recommendation have not led to preventative action because they were not discussed by the responsible decision makers (Rwanda, Srebrenica) and/or because conflicting international concerns hindered firm action (Darfur). Instruments of prevention were available, in the form of UN peacekeeping troops who could have been empowered for successful prevention in combination with existing reinforcements …

Perceptions Of Weight Reduction Surgery: The Role Of Stigma And The Attribution Of Responsibility, Jessica Marie Behm Aug 2009

Perceptions Of Weight Reduction Surgery: The Role Of Stigma And The Attribution Of Responsibility, Jessica Marie Behm

Theses and Dissertations

The amount of weight reduction surgeries performed in the United States has increased considerably within the last twenty years. Many people choose to undergo the procedure with the hopes of shedding the negative stigma of being obese and improving their life. The purpose of this study was to investigate how society views individuals who have elected to undergo weight reduction surgery. A questionnaire assessing the influence of three variables (Responsibility, Acceptability, and Stigma) on the perception of weight reduction surgery was developed and administered to 503 Midwestern college students. The respondents were presented with one of two vignettes depicting a …

The Emergence Of An Own-Gender Bias Within A Change Blindness And Eyewitness Paradigm, Alison E. Finstad Aug 2009

The Emergence Of An Own-Gender Bias Within A Change Blindness And Eyewitness Paradigm, Alison E. Finstad

Theses and Dissertations

Studies exploring the change blindness phenomenon have consistently shown that individuals are surprisingly poor at detecting changes to visual scenes and identities in real-world interactions. The area of eyewitness identification has revealed a similar type of visual processing error; specifically, the tendency for eyewitnesses to incorrectly identify a perpetrator. Recently, researchers have attempted to merge these two areas, creating a combined change blindness/eyewitness paradigm, allowing for the study of variables of similar interest within the two areas. Using this type of combined paradigm, the present study explored the possibility of an own-gender bias within a change blindness/eyewitness experience. Participants viewed …

The Relationship Of Psychology And Social Interest To Disciplinary Infractions Committed By Women Prison Inmates, Katie Lynn Rye Olbinski Aug 2009

The Relationship Of Psychology And Social Interest To Disciplinary Infractions Committed By Women Prison Inmates, Katie Lynn Rye Olbinski

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study is a direct extension ofNoble's (2006) research that showed that psychopathy and social interest are related to disciplinary infractions committed by male inmates. While Noble's (2006) population used male inmates, this study examined the relationship of these constructs to female inmates' disciplinary infractions. Psychopathy is defined by a lack of empathy, egocentricity, and superficial charm (Cleckley, 1964). Social interest, on the other hand, is characterized by a willingness to cooperate with others and an ability to accept responsibility (Kaplan, 1991 ). Participants in this investigation were 114 female inmates from a prison facility within the Indiana Department of …

Courtrooms As Battlefields In The Evolution War: Examining Judicial Behavior And The Outcomes Of Cases Involving Public Education And Religion, Trevor W. Ramsey Aug 2009

Courtrooms As Battlefields In The Evolution War: Examining Judicial Behavior And The Outcomes Of Cases Involving Public Education And Religion, Trevor W. Ramsey

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Over the past century, various challenges to the teaching of the theory of evolution have made their way to the courts, with the two most recent dealing with the concept of "intelligent design." The goal of this study is to attempt to find indicators that could help predict how judges will decide these types of cases in the future. Due to the low number of such cases, this study looked at the issue from the broader perspective of conflicts between religion and public schools. Focusing on federal district and appellate courts, sixty-eight cases were selected, with 145 rulings from 121 …

Unlocking Doors For The Locked-Out: How Can Community Colleges Help To Demolish Barriers, Build Bridges, And Transition Male Ex-Offenders Into The Workforce, Jeannette Collins-Molden

Dissertations

Over 670,000 adult prisoners were released in 2004. It is estimated that by 2010 over 1.2 million inmates will be released annually. The purpose of this study was to explore (a) barriers that male ex-offenders encounter in their pursuit of entering the workforce and (b) various types of education and support services that community colleges could provide in order to assist this marginalized population in overcoming these barriers. This qualitative case study was conducted at a community college offering programs that attracted a population of at least 50% male ex-offenders. Six male ex-offender students, four of the case study institution …
