The Experiences Of Smith College School For Social Work Students Talking With Field Supervisors About Issues Of Race, Julia Kraft Perault Aug 2009

The Experiences Of Smith College School For Social Work Students Talking With Field Supervisors About Issues Of Race, Julia Kraft Perault

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This mixed method survey study explored Smith College School for Social Work (SCSSW) students' experiences in talking with field supervisors about issues of race. Increased racial and ethnic diversity in the United States calls for attention to issues of race in social work education and practice. The SCSSW shares with major social work organizations its commitment to anti-racism. Field supervision is an integral component of the SCSSW social work curriculum and represents an arena in which students can incorporate anti-racism learning into practice. A dearth of social work conceptual and empirical literature examines racial dialogues in field supervision from the …

Consumer Willingness To Pay For Water Conservation In The Framework Of Renewable Energy Projects, Amber Riter Aug 2009

Consumer Willingness To Pay For Water Conservation In The Framework Of Renewable Energy Projects, Amber Riter

Economics ETDs

This research focuses on consumer valuation of the benefits associated with renewable electricity generation, specifically for water conservation. Previous contingent valuation studies in this area conclude that consumers are willing to pay for these benefits, but do not explicitly consider the environmental benefit of water conservation. The impact of this benefit is tested for a unique sample of New Mexican consumers by performing a split-sample study with a treatment variation in the benefit related information given to the respondent. The study is performed using the Internet survey mode for a sample population of 2000 University and University Hospital Staff. A …

Effects Of Socialization During The Elementary Student Teaching Practicum On Pre-Service Teachers' Application Of Theories And Practices Learned In The Professional Teacher Education Program, Glenn Hushman Aug 2009

Effects Of Socialization During The Elementary Student Teaching Practicum On Pre-Service Teachers' Application Of Theories And Practices Learned In The Professional Teacher Education Program, Glenn Hushman

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

Socialization is the process of gathering knowledge and constructing it in a social context. This gathering of knowledge is often acquired formally through an educational process or informally by interaction with other people (Capel, 2007). A physical education teacher goes through a socialization process where beliefs, attitudes, behaviors, and teaching philosophies are influenced. The purpose of this study was to examine how pre-service teachers application of theory and practice learned during the professional teacher education program (PETE) was influenced by aspects of socialization while immersed in the student teaching practicum. Data were collected using a variety of qualitative techniques and …

The Impact Of Indian Gaming On Educational Attainment, Poverty Among Native American Tribes, Aaron Diaz Aug 2009

The Impact Of Indian Gaming On Educational Attainment, Poverty Among Native American Tribes, Aaron Diaz

Sociology ETDs

What is the impact of Indian gaming on educational attainment among Native American tribes? Is there a correlation between Indian gaming and poverty rates? Utilizing a combination of cross-sectional analysis and longitudinal case studies, I examine whether Indian gaming has an impact on educational attainment. I also explore the economic mechanism of how this effect occurs. I analyze the 1990 and 2000 census data in addition to raw data collected from the National Indian Gaming Commission website, which provided the year selected Native American tribes were approved to pursue the establishment of gaming on their reservations. No significance was recorded …

Comparing The Effectiveness Of Hantavirus Outreach In Northwestern New Mexico, Panama, And Chile, Marjorie Mcconnell Aug 2009

Comparing The Effectiveness Of Hantavirus Outreach In Northwestern New Mexico, Panama, And Chile, Marjorie Mcconnell

Sociology ETDs

This research compared the effectiveness of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome prevention outreach in northwestern New Mexico, the Los Santos region of Panama, and Region Araucania IX in Chile. Outreach effectiveness for hantavirus is not well understood, even though outreach in Chile appears to be more extensive than in northwestern New Mexico and Panama. Understanding the role of human demographics, disease ecology, and subsequent human behavior in the disease process is critical to the examination of community responses in terms of behavior changes. Through the implementation of a self administered 28 question survey instrument (n=601), I measured attitudes towards, and across public …

Beloved Savages And Other Outsiders: Genre And Gender Transgressions In The Travel Writings Of Herman Melville, Bayard Taylor, And Charles Warren Stoddard, Kelvin Ray Beliele Aug 2009

Beloved Savages And Other Outsiders: Genre And Gender Transgressions In The Travel Writings Of Herman Melville, Bayard Taylor, And Charles Warren Stoddard, Kelvin Ray Beliele

English Language and Literature ETDs

"'My dissertation is a study of the travel writings of three nineteenth-century American authors, Herman Melville, Bayard Taylor, and Charles Warren Stoddard. I argue that these writers evinced a rebellion encompassing literary as well as political and social subversion. In order to succeed in their rebellion, they relied upon genre transgression, the violation of the traditions and conventions of a particular genre, to convey defiant social opinions. They were demonstrative in voicing their critiques of American sexual, religious, and racial dogmas in their travel fiction and poetry. These three authors violated genre boundaries in most of their works, but especially …

General Religiosity And Use Of Religious Coping As Predictors Of Treatment Gains For Patients With Schizophrenia And Their Relatives, Eugenio A. Duarte Aug 2009

General Religiosity And Use Of Religious Coping As Predictors Of Treatment Gains For Patients With Schizophrenia And Their Relatives, Eugenio A. Duarte

Open Access Dissertations

While research on religion and severe psychopathology is mixed, the majority of evidence suggests that greater religiosity and greater use of religious forms of coping relate to beneficial psychosocial outcomes for both patients with schizophrenia (Huguelet et al., 2006; Moss et al., 2006) and their family members (Pearce et al., 2006; Roff et al., 2004). However, this data is generally cross-sectional. To date, scant research has longitudinally examined how religious beliefs and practices relate to key indicators of psychosocial outcomes for patients with schizophrenia and their relatives. This study used a White and Hispanic sample of 41 patients with schizophrenia …

Influence Of A Multidimensional Model Of Antiracism Training On White Clinicians Positive Self-Regard, White Privilege Attitudes And Social Identity Development, Mareike Noel Muszynski Aug 2009

Influence Of A Multidimensional Model Of Antiracism Training On White Clinicians Positive Self-Regard, White Privilege Attitudes And Social Identity Development, Mareike Noel Muszynski

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

A mixed-methods evaluation of a racism training examined whether education about a social identity development model predicated on critical race theory influenced white clinicians' attitudes regarding white privilege, level of positive self-regard, and attempted to explore how participants processed their social identity development in a follow up questionnaire. Fourteen self-identifying white clinicians completed pre and post surveys the day of a two and half hour work-shop based training. Five of those participants went on to complete the final survey including qualitative questions regarding their identity development. White privilege attitudes were measured by the White Privilege Attitudes Scale (WPAS; Pinterits, Poteat …

Doubt And The Values Of An Ignorance-Based World View For Restoration: Coastal Louisiana Wetlands, R. Eugene Turner Aug 2009

Doubt And The Values Of An Ignorance-Based World View For Restoration: Coastal Louisiana Wetlands, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

Embracing doubt, a signature strength of science, is an essential core component of an ignorance-based-world view (IBWV) that assumes the areas of certainty are small relative to the large field of ignorance. The contrasting knowledge-based world view (KBWV) assumes that small and mostly insignificant knowledge gaps exist. When the KBWV is combined with a sense of urgency to “do something,” then the intellectual landscape is flattened, the introduction of new ideas is impeded, monitoring and adaptive management is marginalized, risky behaviors continue, and social learning is restricted. The history of three coastal Louisiana land-uses (agricultural impoundment, marsh management, and dredging) …

An Exploratory Study Of Transracial Adoptions : African American Perspectives, Tarn Carolyn Martin Aug 2009

An Exploratory Study Of Transracial Adoptions : African American Perspectives, Tarn Carolyn Martin

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study was undertaken to determine if what the National Association of Black Social Workers states; that African American children raised by Caucasian adults are at risk for being outcast by the African American community. The NABSW believes that transracial adoptees are not able to develop a healthy sense of self when raised by Caucasians. For this study I interviewed 8 participants who identify as African American who were between the ages of 18-47. The participants were asked a series of questions in regards to their development and how they have fared being raised by Caucasian parents. Most of the …

Establishing The Core Self And Its Significance Developmentally : A Qualitative Exploration Of The Relationship Between Achieving Self Cohesion And Entrance Into Adulthood, Joseph James Lacy Aug 2009

Establishing The Core Self And Its Significance Developmentally : A Qualitative Exploration Of The Relationship Between Achieving Self Cohesion And Entrance Into Adulthood, Joseph James Lacy

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between achieving self cohesion and the transition into adulthood. Arnett (1998, 2000, 2004) has introduced a developmental stage which is neither adolescence nor adulthood, emerging adulthood, during which identity exploration is occurring. This exploration involves the questioning of one's worldviews, relationships and career path. As this discovery evolves one becomes more committed within these areas resulting with a cohesive self. Drawing from Erik Erikson's (1950, 1968) psychosocial stages of development and James Marcia's (2002) identity development model this thesis will explore identity development and the entrance into adulthood. This study …

Perception And Quality Of Life : Contrasting Personal Faith Based Wellness And The Traditional Medical Models Of Care Used In Alcohol Abuse And Addiction Treatment Programs, Cynthia Gibeau Aug 2009

Perception And Quality Of Life : Contrasting Personal Faith Based Wellness And The Traditional Medical Models Of Care Used In Alcohol Abuse And Addiction Treatment Programs, Cynthia Gibeau

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study explored the quality of care for those who suffer from alcohol and drug abuse. A presentation of the current traditional medical model focused on current research on the brain mechanism involved in alcohol addiction, as well as current treatments that are available. It then presented three models based on personal faith, and supplied research on the efficacy of these models. A valid argument was made that the inclusion of a personal faith model in the treatment of those who suffer from alcohol abuse and addiction would provide a more positive outcome and helps provide more stability when an …

The Feasibility Of Dialogue Writing With Patients Who Have An Eating Disorder, Andrea Lynn Harbeck Aug 2009

The Feasibility Of Dialogue Writing With Patients Who Have An Eating Disorder, Andrea Lynn Harbeck

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study emerged from the creation of dialogue writing, a new intervention for the treatment of eating disorders. A nascent intervention, the study investigated its feasibility as a form of treatment for eating disorders; specifically the study gathered data regarding the participant's experience with dialogue writing. The dialogue writing process involves writing a dialogue between the self and the eating disorder as personified in a character created by the participant. Nine women receiving treatment for eating disorders at a clinic participated in a group setting in the dialogue writing exercise, which was administered by the groups' regular facilitator. Although the …
