The Values Of Interdisciplinarity In Homicide Law Reform, Robert Weisberg
The Values Of Interdisciplinarity In Homicide Law Reform, Robert Weisberg
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Professor Reid Fontaine's article, Adequate (Non)Provocation and Heat of Passion as Excuse Not Justification, makes a convincing case for treating heat of passion wholly as an excuse not a justification, as the only sensible way to comprehend its various forms. In doing so, Professor Fontaine stimulates further thinking about heat of passion doctrine, along two dimensions.

1 Malaysia: Promoting Unity Among The Different Races, M.L. Lean
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
Malaysia is a relatively young country that achieved her independence in 1957. Due to massive migration in the last two centuries, Malaysia is a multi-racial country. Thus, this article describes how two dailies have played their role in promoting racial harmony among the different races in Malaysia. The discursive construction of the different races by the dailies may act as a form of barometer indicating the level of tolerance that exist among Malaysians and also, how the dailies try to reflect the cultural diversity of the different races to each other. In-depth interviews were conducted with two members of the …

Warm Ideas And Chilling Consequences, Arthur P. Bochner
Warm Ideas And Chilling Consequences, Arthur P. Bochner
Communication Faculty Publications
In the process of writing my academic memoirs spanning a period of more than thirty-five years, I discovered how crucial the work of Gregory Bateson had been to my life as a teacher, a scholar, and a relational partner. In this paper I celebrate Bateson's charming and incisive ideas about how communication works, his deep reservations about the worship of quantification, and his astute analysis of what is at stake when we make epistemological errors in everyday life. Reviewing a turning point in my academic life—a conference held in 1979, I reaffirm the importance of warm ideas and provide a …

The Impact Of News Coverage On Conflict: Toward Greater Understanding, Richard C. Reuben
The Impact Of News Coverage On Conflict: Toward Greater Understanding, Richard C. Reuben
Faculty Publications
This article develops an approach for the empirical study of the news media’s impact on the conflict that it covers. While mass communications research has studied how the news media covers conflict, it has not taken the next step of assessing the impact of that coverage. This article contends that such an inquiry is necessarily an inter-disciplinary task, and joins conflict theory with mass communications research to identify the kinds of questions that may be empirically tested to determine whether the news media is having a constructive or destructive effect on the conflict that it covers.

Advancing Cultural Competence And Intercultural Consciousness Through A Cross-Cultural Simulation With Teacher Candidates, Nancy P. Gallavan, Angela Webster-Smith
Advancing Cultural Competence And Intercultural Consciousness Through A Cross-Cultural Simulation With Teacher Candidates, Nancy P. Gallavan, Angela Webster-Smith
Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education
Teacher education curricula typically introduce multicultural concepts, principles, and practices. However, candidates benefit greatly from experiences that pursue multi-faceted contexts. In this study the simulation, Barnga, enhances candidates’ cultural competence and intercultural consciousness by exploring perceived realities in classrooms and communities. Through Barnga, candidates are afforded a rich investigation into self knowledge, acceptance of group conventions, exposure to multiple perspectives, and self-assessment of their stance toward equity and change. Expressing their reactions, responses, and reflections, candidates experience multi-layered transformation, intercultural consciousness, and cultural competence for themselves. By participating in cross-cultural simulations and interacting with people like and unlike themselves, candidates …

Rationality And Humanity: A View From Feminist Economics, Julie A. Nelson
Rationality And Humanity: A View From Feminist Economics, Julie A. Nelson
Economics Faculty Publication Series
DOES RATIONAL CHOICE THEORY (RCT) HAVE SOMETHING IMPORTANT to contribute to the humanities? Usually the arguments for answering “yes” to this question go something like the following: The application of RCT has proved to be a powerful tool in economics and the social sciences, leading to clear and rigorous insights unattainable from less precise methods. Therefore, by also harnessing this power, the disciplines in the humanities could advance toward becoming more elegant, rational, and forceful in their explorations of human behavior. As an economist, I’d like to address this argument on its home ground. Has the use of RCT advanced …
A Sociological Approach To Misappropriation, Elizabeth A. Rowe
A Sociological Approach To Misappropriation, Elizabeth A. Rowe
UF Law Faculty Publications
This Article breaks new ground by applying sociological analysis to trade secret law. It uses a group which constitutes the largest segment of the workforce, namely, those labeled Generation X and Generation Y (collectively referred to and coined in the Article as "New Generation Employees") as a case study for analyzing how values and social norms influence compliance with trade secret laws.
By drawing on the sociological literature, the Article is the first to apply theories about employee theft to trade secret misappropriation. It integrates the values of New Generation Employees with principles of equity theory, work climate theory, and …
