Cross Boarders And Reap Beyond The Obvious Outcomes, Jane Szutu Permaul Jun 2009

Cross Boarders And Reap Beyond The Obvious Outcomes, Jane Szutu Permaul

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

What borders are we talking about, and how might we be enriched by crossing these borders? Answers to these questions can broaden our horizons with reference to the borders that we need to cross in order to develop and institutionalized Service-Learning. Furthermore, identification of outcomes from Service-Learning beyond the obvious is essential to integrate Service-Learning into the academic curricula. We know that Service-Learning yield student learning, but is it worth academic credits? We know community service is performed, but what else?

Service-Learning As A University-Wide Program : Rationales And Issues, Kwan Yiu, Edward Chen

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

Service-Learning plays a significant role in liberal arts education which is the preferred form of undergraduate education for meeting the challenges of the New /Creative Economy of today. The modern world has brought about issues such as dealing with uncertainty and change, diversity, and inequality resulting from digital divide. Liberal arts education emphasizes the importance of teaching and learning processes such as interactive relationships, community services, transdisciplinarity, and international exposure. Service-Learning is a useful medium through which the liberal arts teaching and learning processes can be practiced and the issues of the modern economy can be studies or even resolved.

Disparate Juvenile Court Outcomes For Disabled Delinquent Youth: A Social Work Call To Action, Christopher A. Mallett Jun 2009

Disparate Juvenile Court Outcomes For Disabled Delinquent Youth: A Social Work Call To Action, Christopher A. Mallett

Social Work Faculty Publications

Current service delivery for at-risk youth is through four separate systems: special education; mental health and substance abuse; juvenile justice; and child welfare. Many youth (and their families) are involved with more than one of these systems, making early disability identification and subsequent systems coordination paramount in leading to more successful juvenile court outcomes. This coordination is an important and prioritized public policy concern because a majority of youth (disproportionately minority) within juvenile justice populations has been identified with mental health disorders, special education disabilities, or maltreatment histories. This study of a unique sample of probation-supervised delinquent youths ( n …

Excessive Acquisition In Hoarding, Randy O. Frost, David F. Tolin, Gail Steketee, Kristin E. Fitch, Alexandra Selbo-Bruns

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Compulsive hoarding (the acquisition of and failure to discard large numbers of possessions) is associated with substantial health risk, impairment, and economic burden. However, little research has examined separate components of this definition, particularly excessive acquisition. The present study examined acquisition in hoarding. Participants, 878 self-identified with hoarding and 665 family informants (not matched to hoarding participants), completed an Internet survey. Among hoarding participants who met criteria for clinically significant hoarding, 61% met criteria for a diagnosis of compulsive buying and approximately 85% reported excessive acquisition. Family informants indicated that nearly 95% exhibited excessive acquisition. Those who acquired excessively had …

Participation In Prevention Programs For Dating Violence: Beliefs About Relationship Violence And Intention To Participate, Tara L. Cornelius, Kieran T. Sullivan, Nicole Wyngarden, Jennifer C. Milliken Jun 2009

Participation In Prevention Programs For Dating Violence: Beliefs About Relationship Violence And Intention To Participate, Tara L. Cornelius, Kieran T. Sullivan, Nicole Wyngarden, Jennifer C. Milliken

Peer Reviewed Articles

This study utilizes the Health Belief Model (HBM) to examine the factors related to the intention to participate in prevention programming for dating violence. Perceptions of susceptibility to future violence and the benefits of prevention programming appear to be the strongest predictors of participation in prevention programs. Perceptions of the severity of dating violence do not appear to be related to intentions to participate. There were no differences in intention between those reporting psychological or physical violence in their dating relationship, although some of the HBM factors were associated with a history of violence. Contrary to hypotheses, psychological and physical …

Exploring Dynamics Between Instructional Designers And Higher Education Faculty: An Ethnographic Case Study, Cheng-Chang (Sam) Pan, Kelvin Thompson Jun 2009

Exploring Dynamics Between Instructional Designers And Higher Education Faculty: An Ethnographic Case Study, Cheng-Chang (Sam) Pan, Kelvin Thompson

Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)

This study concentrated on individual and team traits of an instructional design team in the presence of a robust relationship between the team members and faculty at a southeast state university in U.S.A. Three exploratory themes emerged from the interpersonal dynamics observed in this qualitative inquiry: (1) expertise, (2) work motivation, and (3) team culture. Preliminary results first suggested that professionalism with a mix of task mental models, assertiveness, and proactivity be implanted in the instructional designers. Then, instructional designers’ growth and survival needs allow for active learning and continuous reflection on curriculum development and instruction delivery in the e-Learning …

Characteristics Of Alternative Public High Schools: A National Study Using The 2003-04 Schools And Staffing Survey, Lisa Ryan Jun 2009

Characteristics Of Alternative Public High Schools: A National Study Using The 2003-04 Schools And Staffing Survey, Lisa Ryan

Dissertations

Decreasing the high school dropout rate in the United States is gaining a great deal of national attention. One of the key strategies that has been identified to decrease dropout rate is to offer at-risk students alternatives to traditional school. This study contributed to our knowledge about alternative high schools for at-risk students by using data from the large-scale, nationally representative 2003-04 Schools and Staffing Public School Survey. Using an effective schools conceptual framework, the author used logistic regression analyses to compare the characteristics of regular and alternative public high schools. An overall model was created that could predict two …

The Social History In Death Penalty Defense Advocacy, Jesse Cheng Jun 2009

The Social History In Death Penalty Defense Advocacy, Jesse Cheng

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

This article offers an epistemologically focused descriptive account of the “social history” in American death penalty defense advocacy. Under British scientific empiricism, sufficient investigation forms the basis for representations that aspire to be adequate to investigated realities. As defense advocates see it, however, the very idea of humanity resists the goal of epistemological finality that comes with empiricist adequation. I argue that the social history investigation instrumentalizes this aesthetic of investigation-then-representation, allowing advocates to affirm to themselves the humanity of their clients while sidestepping the goal of adequation.

Quality Of Life And Depression: Outcome Markers For A Weight Management Program, Cecilia Dueñas Jun 2009

Quality Of Life And Depression: Outcome Markers For A Weight Management Program, Cecilia Dueñas

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Pediatric obesity has become a national epidemic and current trends suggest a continued increase. Obese children have been found to have higher incidences of depression and a lower quality of life (QOL) than children from other often more severe medical populations. As a result, weight management programs are on the increase with the majority measuring outcome success through weight loss and decreased body mass index (BMI). It is evident however, that health factors are not the only factors associated with obesity, and that psychosocial components are important as well. The Loma Linda University Growing Fit Program is unique in that …
