DLSU Business & Economics Review

To determine the extent of influence of the organization’s context and structure factors on the perceived effectiveness of labor unions in the banking, hotel, and manufacturing industries in the National Capital Region, 88 local unions consisting of 772 rank-and-file and supervisory union members from 82 firms were covered. It is evident from the results that the level of union effectiveness as perceived by the members is a function of two major organizational factors, namely, context and structure. Moreover, there are significant differences in the average level of effectiveness rating of unions per industry.

A Review Of Irish Projects On The Sustainability Of Recognition Of Prior Learning Initiatives, Katherine Collins Jul 2009

A Review Of Irish Projects On The Sustainability Of Recognition Of Prior Learning Initiatives, Katherine Collins

Conference Papers

One increasingly popular area of research in the workplace is the concept of the recognition of prior learning (RPL). RPL can be defined as the recognition of learning that has taken place, but has not necessarily been assessed or measured and which may have been acquired through formal, non-formal and informal routes. In this paper I will attempt to use the European concept of Valorisation as a means to examine four RPL projects that were undertaken in Ireland in recent years between higher education institutes and workforce sectors. This analysis was done by way of desk research and interviews with …

Theses

This thesis will outline how I employed an arts informed participatory research process with four women members of the Southend family resource centre in Wexford town. The primary context for this research was the introduction of a module in community based learning on the BA (hons) in Art at the Wexford Campus of I.T. Carlow combined with a desire to participate more actively in the community sector outside the campus. The Role Of Law Schools In Improving Access To Justice: The Story Of The Southern Illinois University School Of Law And The Family Mediation Program, Suzanne J. Schmitz

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Law schools across the county can significantly contribute to improving the public’s access to the justice system. Improving the public’s access to the justice system helps to ensure that equal justice is enjoyed by all classes of people. One way to provide equal justice to all is through a cooperative effort among academia, courts, and practitioners. A prime example of one such cooperative effort is that of the Southern Illinois University School of Law and the First Judicial Circuit of Illinois, which collaborated to create the First Judicial Circuit Court-Referred Family Mediation Program. The Southern Illinois University School of Law …

Extending The Capability Paradigm To Address The Complexity Of Disability, Jean-Luc Dubois, Jean-Francois Trani Jun 2009

Extending The Capability Paradigm To Address The Complexity Of Disability, Jean-Luc Dubois, Jean-Francois Trani

Brown School Faculty Publications

Amartya Sen looks at people’s well-being in terms of functioning and freedom, rather than in terms of the amount of goods or services consumed. The capability approach developed by Sen deals with what people are able to achieve by using these commodities. Concerning disability, he wrote: “We must take note that a disabled person may not be able to do the many things that an able-bodied individual can, with the same bundle of commodities” (Sen, 1985 p.7). The capability approach makes it possible to analyse the economic situation of people with disabilities in a different way. What becomes important is …
