Eitc & Tanf Participation Among Young Adult Low-Income Families, Richard K. Caputo Jan 2009

Eitc & Tanf Participation Among Young Adult Low-Income Families, Richard K. Caputo

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

Relying on data from the National Longitudinal Surveys, this article examined EITC & TANF participation among low-income families (N=1,098). Program use (EITC only, TANF only, or both EITC and TANF) was found to vary by age, number of children in the household, ethnicity/race, work effort, marital status, prior program participation, and sex of participants. Those with two or more children, the least education, ethnic/racial minorities, women, and married persons were more likely than their respective counterparts to take advantage of either or both vis-a-vis neither program. Findings suggested that EITC and TANF are well-targeted but underutilized programs.

The “Point” Of Positive Organizational Behavior, Fred Luthans, Bruce Avolio Jan 2009

The “Point” Of Positive Organizational Behavior, Fred Luthans, Bruce Avolio

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Perhaps the most important “Point” we would like to make in this “Point-Counterpoint” on positive organizational behavior is the role that research must play in this evolving area of study. We follow this point on the importance of research by drawing from recent findings that indicate in discussions such as this point and counterpoint, that taking a positive approach leads to more in-depth inquiry, whereas a negative perspective leads to advocacy and in our view less learning potential. Thus, the positive perspective we take in this “Point” piece is to identify and make a deep inquiry into the major issues …

Integrated Services In The Inclusive Classroom, Stephanie Wojcik Jan 2009

Integrated Services In The Inclusive Classroom, Stephanie Wojcik

Education Masters

This study is based on research conducted on integrated services. The research focuses on factors of an effective inclusive classroom and the collaboration of teachers and service providers. The research also focuses on related service models and the elements of service integration within inclusive classrooms. In order to gain more information on related services, surveys were sent out to teachers and related service providers at Elm Elementary. These surveys asked professionals what kind of service model they were involved in (pull-out, push-in, and combination). The surveys also asked professionals for their reactions to each service model and which they preferred …

Disaster Mental Health, Denise Bulling, Tarik Abdel-Monem Jan 2009

Disaster Mental Health, Denise Bulling, Tarik Abdel-Monem

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

People have always given aid and comfort to each other during times of disaster. However, attempts to structure and professionalize this assistance are fairly recent developments. Disaster mental health, as an evolving field of practice and study, is a collection of interventions and practices that are designed to address incident-specific stress reactions, rather than ongoing or developmental mental health needs. Traditional mental health practice is based on a medical model, with a clinician seeing a patient in an office setting. Disaster mental health introduces a paradigm shift, requiring that practitioners (clinicians and indigenous helpers) work with individuals and whole communities …

An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Story And Resilience, Erica Schoon Jan 2009

An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Story And Resilience, Erica Schoon

Theses & ETDs

This thesis uses Robert Coles's Children of Crisis series as a starting point for examining the dynamic relationship between the concepts of story and psychological resilience in the United States. I discuss Coles's treatment of young people in crisis in the 1960s and 1970s and the parallel situations in the US today. Using studies from a broad range of disciplines and portraits of children from Coles's books, this thesis demonstrates the dynamic relationship between story and resilience by exploring the representation of resilience in published or public stories, as well as the influence of story on resilience. I detail the …

Eye-Movement Desensitization And Reprocessing: Implementation And Utilization Of Emdr As A Treatment For Trauma, Kelly Medeiros Jan 2009

Eye-Movement Desensitization And Reprocessing: Implementation And Utilization Of Emdr As A Treatment For Trauma, Kelly Medeiros

Undergraduate Review

Trauma is a pervasive global issue that affects both children and adults. It is officially defined in the most recent Diagnostic Manual as an event that threatens death or serious injury, and that elicits a response of fear, helplessness, or horror (American Psychiatric Association, 2002). Other respected definitions include a “sudden, unexpected, overwhelmingly intense emotional blow....[that] quickly becomes incorporated into the mind” (Terr, 1992, p. 8), and something that makes “both internal and external resources...inadequate to cope with external threat” (Van der Kolk, 1989, p. 393). Literature suggests that people who have experienced trauma may present with symptoms including depression, …

Empowering Faculty To Facilitate Distance Education, Jane Arenas, Henry Gray, Paulette Hamner Jan 2009

Empowering Faculty To Facilitate Distance Education, Jane Arenas, Henry Gray, Paulette Hamner

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Traditional education has undergone major changes over the past decade. Higher education has evolved from brick and mortar to virtual campuses. Technological advancements in communication have changed the way information is presented. The manner in which students learn has also evolved. Educational leaders must also evolve to meet the needs of both students and faculty because, faculty members struggle with changing curricula, non-traditional learning environments and new technology. They need their leaders to assist them with the transitions (Tjosvold 2006). This paper attempts to provide a research-based framework through which educational leaders might empower faculty to better meet the mission, …

Web-Based Course Content: An Emerging Consideration For Authenticity From A Learner Perspective, Laurie Bedford Jan 2009

Web-Based Course Content: An Emerging Consideration For Authenticity From A Learner Perspective, Laurie Bedford

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

More organizations and instructors are incorporating authentic learning strategies into the instructional paradigm of the classroom. One advantage of this ideology is that the diversity of individual learners can be capitalized upon through a dialogue consisting of multiple perspectives. In these contemporary classrooms, the curriculum becomes a more fluid, personal entity based on experience, prior knowledge and individual expertise (Bedford, Wiebe, and Tschida, 2008). At the same time, a plethora of information which draws upon multiple perspectives is also more readily available and accessible though electronic venues—primarily via the Internet. The abundance of available information provides opportunities for learners to …

Corporate Philanthropy And The Market For Altruism, M. Todd Henderson, Anup Malani Jan 2009

Corporate Philanthropy And The Market For Altruism, M. Todd Henderson, Anup Malani

Articles

Academics and businesspeople have long debated the merits of corporate philanthropy. It is our contention that this debate is too narrowly focused on the role of corporations. There is a robust market for philanthropic works--which we call the market for altruism--in which nonprofit organizations, the government, and for-profit corporations compete to do good works. In this Essay, we describe this market and the role corporations play in satisfying the demand for altruism. We conclude that corporations should only engage in philanthropy when they have a comparative advantage over nonprofits and the government. Moreover, the government must avoid discriminating--particularly when setting …
