Islam : Between Message And History, Abdelmadjid Charfi, Abdou Filali-Ansary, Sikeena Karmali Ahmed, David Bond

In Translation: Modern Muslim Thinkers

This book could easily be called ‘A Guide for the Modern Muslim’, someone for whom the sentiments of his or her ancestors resonate but who cannot accept the canonised formulas of a prescriptive education.

Charfi spells out what for him is the essential message of Islam, followed by a history of its unfolding through the person of the Prophet Muhammad, whom he perceives as a visionary seeking to change the ideals, attitudes and behaviours of the society in which he lived. Charfi delineates the message and its history as two separate elements, conflated by tradition.

Charfi confronts with great lucidity …

On Pedagogy And The Human Sciences, Michael F. Mascolo, Christina Hardway, Deborah Margolis

Pedagogy and the Human Sciences

In launching PHS, our goal is to stimulate theory, practice, research and reflection on the process of teaching and learning in disciplines that address the question of what it means to be human. In so doing, we cast our net broadly to include not only psychology and the traditional social sciences, but also disciplines that are often considered to be part of the humanities – philosophy, literary studies, religious studies, history and related fields. We embrace the full range of different modes of inquiry, including philosophical reflection and analysis, quantitative and qualitative empirical research, action research, ethnography, hermeneutic and discursive …

Discerning Redeeming Communities: Rita Nakashima Brock And Elizabeth A. Johnson In Dialogue, Alison Downie Jan 2009

Discerning Redeeming Communities: Rita Nakashima Brock And Elizabeth A. Johnson In Dialogue, Alison Downie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rita Nakashima Brock's Journeys by Heart: A Christology of Erotic Power and Elizabeth A. Johnson's Friends of God and Prophets: A Feminist Theological Reading of the Communion of Saints offer resources for reflecting upon what redemptive community is, how it functions, and how women, in particular, experience redemption.

With deep roots in Trinitarian creation theology and a strong trunk of feminist theological anthropology, the branches of Christian feminist reconstructionist theology produce rich soteriological fruits. Without rootedness in creation theology, theological anthropology is anthropocentric, not sufficiently holistic or ecologically aware. Similarly, without development of a feminist theological anthropology, soteriology inevitably reflects …

"To Educate, Agitate, And Legislate": Baptists, Methodists, And The Anti-Saloon League Of Virginia, 1901-1910, Mary Beth Mathews

Cultural and Philosophical Inquiry Articles

Organized in 1901, the Anti-Saloon League of Virginia (ASLVA) became the leading statewide association in battling the liquor forces. The league claimed to be nonpartisan and nonpolitical; its motto was "The saloon must go."3 A variety of white Protestant clergy and laymen staffed the ASLVA, and these leaders kept up a unified front as they promoted their sale stated goal, the eradication of the saloon.

Counselor Religiosity And Its Relationship To The Willingness To Encourage Forgiveness And Reconciliation In Clients, Annmarie Cutting Jan 2009

Counselor Religiosity And Its Relationship To The Willingness To Encourage Forgiveness And Reconciliation In Clients, Annmarie Cutting

Dissertations

Problem: Although the concept of forgiveness is very old, it has not been systematically studied until fairly recently. As forgiveness therapies and the empirical study of these therapies continue to emerge, the question of the counselor’s own sense of religiosity and forgiveness has not been considered. This study looked at the religiosity of counselors/psychotherapists and how this influences the degree to which they have forgiven an individual who has hurt or offended them, as well as whether a counselor’s religiosity influences their willingness to encourage a client to forgive someone who has hurt or offended them.

Purpose: The purpose of …

A Sputnik Moment? The Natural Sciences And Humanities, Edward L. Ayers

History Faculty Publications

Fifty years ago, the Natural Sciences and the Humanities were described (by C.P. Snow) as ‘Two Cultures’. Are they still so? This interview conducted by Peter Vale suggests that they are complementary and are likely to be increasingly so. Edward Ayers is the President of the University of Richmond. Previously dean of arts and sciences at the University of Virginia, where he began teaching in 1980, Ayers was named the National Professor of the Year from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in 2003. A historian of the American South, Ayers has written and edited ten books. The …

Jumping Onto The Bandwagon: New Librarians Navigating The Science/Technology Librarianship, Nedelina Tchangalova

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

Abstract

The terminology of engineering is daunting to the novice librarian without any science background. Library information school (LIS) students without training in scientific disciplines express concerns about pursuing a career in engineering librarianship. Why don’t they get onto the science/technology (sci/tech) bandwagon? What information and inspiration are necessary to sail toward the science and engineering horizons of our profession? A successful transition from graduate student to practicing engineering librarian requires a complex combination of knowledge and skills. The support and assistance of colleagues is critical and the establishment of support groups for various research needs can provide a mechanism …

Review Of The Moravian Springplace Mission To The Cherokees, Volume I, 1805–1813 And The Moravian Springplace Mission To The Cherokees, Volume Ii, 1814–1821. Edited And With An Introduction By Rowena Mcclinton; Preface By Chad Smith., Angela Pulley Hudson

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Noted historian William G. McLoughlin once observed that in addition to mirroring U.S. political structures, the nineteenth-century Cherokee Nation shared two other trends with the young Republic: slavery and Christianity.1 Indeed, even as Cherokee people fought to retain their eastern lands in the first decades of the nineteenth century, they often adopted the ideologies of the land-hungry Americans they tried to resist. Few sources document this complex and contradictory process more vividly than The Moravian Springplace Mission to the Cherokees. Rarely do Cherokee, Christian, and slave histories appear in such intimate relation to one another. In the secondary works on …

Making Live And Letting Die: The Biopolitical Effect Of Navajo Nation V. U.S. Forest Service, Jessica M. Erickson Jan 2009

Making Live And Letting Die: The Biopolitical Effect Of Navajo Nation V. U.S. Forest Service, Jessica M. Erickson

Seattle University Law Review

The philosophies of Michel Foucault have long been applied to various cultures and social movements in hopes of gaining insight into how power operates within a societal framework. One philosophy, Foucault’s conception of “biopolitics,” refers to the state’s regulatory control over the population as a whole, or its ability to control the life and death of the citizenry. Instead of exercising power at the level of each individual, “biopower” is exercised on the level of the population; it is the power to make live and let die.

Indian nations have been battling for sovereignty—freedom from external control in determining the …

Variants In The Samaritan Pentateuch Of The Hebrew Bible As Compared To The Masoretic Text, Sharon Sullivan Dufour Jan 2009

Variants In The Samaritan Pentateuch Of The Hebrew Bible As Compared To The Masoretic Text, Sharon Sullivan Dufour

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Not long after the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple in 70 CE began the eventual end of a long history of textual competition between variations of the Pentateuch. For nearly two millennia the Masoretic Text has held a singular dominant position as the most authoritative text. However, it should never be forgotten that in the earliest history of the Pentateuch is a history of several variant Pentateuch texts that held high authority in different regions of the Near East. The Samaritan Pentateuch is one such text, with an ancient history of competition with the Jewish Masoretic Text. It contains many …

Mission & Culture Publications

At Catholic universities we have lofty and ambitious learning outcomes for our graduates. We want to provide our students with the knowledge, ideas, skills, and critical abilities needed to understand} reflect upon, and act with purpose and effect in our increasingly complex, ever-changing, global-world.
