A Comparison Of The Communal Lament Psalms And The Treaty-Covenant Formula, Daniel Belnap Jan 2009

A Comparison Of The Communal Lament Psalms And The Treaty-Covenant Formula, Daniel Belnap

Studies in the Bible and Antiquity

Within the corpus of psalms in the Hebrew Bible is a group known as the communal laments. Characterized by their use of the first person common plural pronoun, some type of calamity experienced by the community, and a petition to God, these psalms incorporate similar imagery, terminology, and structure. This study explores these psalms and suggests that they relate closely to the Hittite treaty-covenant formula found elsewhere in the Hebrew Bible, yet differ in that they reflect an ongoing covenantal relationship rather than the establishment of such. Thus, these psalms enphasize Israel's expectation that God, as the senior covenantal party, …

The Valentinian Bridal Chamber In The Gospel Of Philip, Gaye Strathearn Jan 2009

The Valentinian Bridal Chamber In The Gospel Of Philip, Gaye Strathearn

Studies in the Bible and Antiquity

The Gospel of Philip, a Valentinian tractate found in the Nag Hammadi library, has sparked the interest of some Latter-day Saints because of its numerous references to a bridal chamber associated with the holy of holies in the temple (Gospel of Philip 69.14-70.4), such as to a "mirrored bridal chamber" (Gospel of Philip 65.12) and a sacred kiss (Gospel of Philip 59.1-5). The purpose of this paper is to examine the bridal chamber references within their Valentinian context. While there may be some interesting parallels with LDS teachings about eternal marriage, it is imporant to understand that the Valentinians understood …

The Patterns Of Missionary Work And Emigration In Early Victorian Buckinghamshire, England, 1849–1878, Ronald E. Bartholomew

BYU Studies

Latter-day Saint missionaries from America began proselyting in Buckinhamshire, England, in the 1840s and established the first branches of the Church here in 1849, but they did not experience the same dramatic successes their colleagues encountered in other regions of the British Isles.

Rethinking Advaita: Who Is Eligible To Read Advaita Texts?, Anantanand Rambachan Jan 2009

Rethinking Advaita: Who Is Eligible To Read Advaita Texts?, Anantanand Rambachan

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

My most recent work, The Advaita Worldview: God, World and Humanity, exemplifies two related movements. First, I join the growing stream of scholars who are making efforts to distinguish the interpretations of Sankara from later Advaita exegetes. The uncritical equation of Sankara's views with those of later exegetes needs to be challenged. Second, I contend that Advaita reflection and scholarship cannot limit itself to the clarification of Sankara's interpretations. These interpretations must also be critically evaluated in order for the tradition to be relevant and creative. It is problematic to assume that Sankara was immune from historical influences, cultural …

Rules, Rights And Religion: The Abyssinian Baptist Church And The Quest For Community, 1808-1810, Quinton H. Dixie

Seattle University Law Review

Religion, as with law, is partially about bringing together opposing narrative interpretations in order to better understand what believers feel is real. This morning I will show how narratives and their various interpretations display how communities bound by laws and morality express their understanding of who they are called to be.

From 'Black-Eyed Girls' To The Mmu (Mujeres Methotistas Unidas): Race, Religion And Gender In The U.S.-Mexico Borderlands, Adriana Pilar Nieto

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study places the stories of Mexican American Methodist women in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands within the context of the organizational history of the United Methodist Women of the Rio Grande Conference of the United Methodist Church: Mujeres Metodistas Unidas, or the MMU. It focuses on the experiences and memories of women who came into contact with the ideals imported by Anglo Methodist missionaries to the U.S. southwest immediately following the conquest of the northern half of Mexico in 1848.

In order to understand the experiences of Mexican American women in relation to the history of Methodism in the southwest, this …

Children At Mass: Integrating Gesture And Movement, Angela Mccarthy Jan 2009

Children At Mass: Integrating Gesture And Movement, Angela Mccarthy

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

The Directory for Masses with Children (1973) includes, as one of the human values present in the Eucharistic Celebration, the experience of symbolic actions (DMC, 9). Children are particularly adept at using symbolic actions from the very tiny child who plays “boo!” with un-scary people to pre-adolescent children who are capable of complex symbolic actions. To incorporate enriching symbolic actions into liturgy celebrated with children certainly supports this important value but must be achieved in a manner which does not reduce the actions to entertainment which then seems to deserve applause. Liturgical movement has deserved criticism when it has drawn …

Good Teaching, Spirituality And The Philosophy Of Emmanuel Levinas, Glenn J. Morrison Jan 2009

Good Teaching, Spirituality And The Philosophy Of Emmanuel Levinas, Glenn J. Morrison

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

The essay aims to show that nurturing a spirituality of good teaching could provide a more committed and responsible attitude towards education. Spirituality speaks of relationships, the search for meaning and, in Levinasian terms, having a heart for another. Students demand that teachers should be many things such as passionate, engaging, intelligent, fun, challenging, fair and creative. The more we can develop meaning and a spirituality in teaching, the more we may meet these demands and also attend to the students’ enthusiasm, frustration, uncertainty, impatience, fears and dreams. Part I of the essay will explore some Levinasian-inspired ways how spirituality …

Beyond Corporate Social Responsibility: Reconciling The Ideals Of A For-Benefit Corporation With Director Fiduciary Duties In The U.S. And Europe, Alissa Mickels

UC Law SF International Law Review

Traditionally, organizations are divided into three sectors: for-profit, non-profit, and the government. Over the past few decades, a new Fourth Sector of organizations has been emerging in the U.S. and abroad. These "Fourth Sector" organizations attempt to integrate social purposes with business methods as seamlessly as possible. A few social entrepreneurs take a more ambitious approach to this "hybrid" approach and are creating For-Benefit corporations that, in addition to integrating social purposes with business methods, adopt a corporate policy to benefit all stakeholders, require inclusive governance and ownership, accountability, and transparency. Will the law allow these For-Benefit corporations to benefit …

The War Of Images: An Artistic Approach To The Parting Of The Ways, Kristin Zavislak, '09 Jan 2009

The War Of Images: An Artistic Approach To The Parting Of The Ways, Kristin Zavislak, '09

Honors Projects

The "parting of the ways" did not occur in one isolated, climactic event; it was a slow and gradual process. When exactly the split between Judaism and Christianity was completed is a topic scholars still disagree on today. To locate the date that it happened, most rely on the scriptures and Christian historical accounts; because very little Jewish writing from the second and third centuries survives, Jewish opinion on the subject is left out entirely. Through an examination of the earliest examples of 'Jewish' and 'Christian' art, on the walls of the Christian catacombs and the buildings found at Dura-Europos, …

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Background: The "default network" consists of a number of brain regions that exhibit correlated low-frequency activity at rest and that have been suggested to be involved in the processing of self-relevant stimuli. Activity in many of these areas has also been shown to be altered in individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We hypothesized that the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC)/precuneus, part of the default network, would exhibit altered connectivity at rest with other areas of the default network and regions associated with PTSD.

Methods: Seventeen medicated and unmedicated female patients with chronic posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) related to early-life trauma …

Ruth, Redemption, Covenant, And Christ, Kerry M. Muhlestein Jan 2009

Ruth, Redemption, Covenant, And Christ, Kerry M. Muhlestein

Faculty Publications

The book of Ruth is one of the most loved stories of the Old Testament. Yet sometimes it remains just that: a story from which some readers gain little in the way of doctrine or application. We identify with the story because the principal actors are neither kings nor prophets but the average people of a typical village. There are neither mighty warriors nor great conflicts, but there are intense struggles for surviving life's difficulties and genuine battles with grief. We love the story because it is so well told, because it has characters we can identify with, because it …

Teaching About Religion: A Mixed Methods Study Of Teachers' Attitudes, Knowledge, And Preparation, With A Focus On Islam And Muslims, Ramona Hussein

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The subject of religion in public schools has always been controversial. America is a religiously diverse society, and one of the fundamental documents of this country, the Constitution of the United States, prohibits the establishment of a single religion which may seek to influence or control the ―free exercise‖ of all religions.

Indeed the discussion of religion in school is very extensive. The subject includes, but is not limited to the discussion of students‘ religious expression, prayer in school, students‘ religious accommodations, the right of the student to distribute religious literature, as well as the rights of students to form …

A Critical Evaluation Of John Hick's Religious Pluralism In Light Of His Eschatological Model, Haejong Je Jan 2009

A Critical Evaluation Of John Hick's Religious Pluralism In Light Of His Eschatological Model, Haejong Je

Dissertations

Introduction to the Problem

The philosophy of John Hick, who is famous for his religious pluralism, has received vigorous study in terms of its epistemology, authority, the concept of God, and Christology. However, less attention has been given to his pareschatology. As explained below, initial investigation shows that there is a need for in-depth study of Hick’s religious philosophy in this area.

The Problem

Based upon preliminary research, Hick’s religious pluralism seems to reveal a critical problem with external correspondency, as follows. His pareschatology, which is an attempt to accept all eschatologies of major world religions as valid, may as …

So Yhwh Established A Sign For Cain': Rethinking Genesis 4,15, Joel N. Lohr Jan 2009

So Yhwh Established A Sign For Cain': Rethinking Genesis 4,15, Joel N. Lohr

Benerd College Faculty Articles

The so-called mark of Cain has long been thought to be something God puts upon Cain's body or a trait Cain would possess to deter would-be avengers. Often overlooked, however, are details immediately following the story Gen 4,17 – dealing with the building of a city – which may well indicate the sign. In this short note I argue that the sign might best be understood not as a mark upon the body, but as something God established for Cain's protection – perhaps a city of refuge.
