ETD Archive

This study examined an inner-city Catholic high school to ascertain the possible existence of an achievement gap. Pearson correlation and multiple regression analyses examined academic indicators (GPA and Math and Science OGT results) and demographic and school variables. Students (258 Black, 101 White, and 55 Hispanic) completed questionnaires, which were matched with school data and confirmatory alumni focus groups. Analyses revealed no significant differences (ANOVA) among academic indicator means. Correlations were found between academic indicators and length of Catholic education, good behavior, extracurricular participation, high-school-graduation-oriented peers, and teacher caring scores. Regression models found positive student behavior, peers, female gender, extracurricular …

Waterlily, Ella Cara Deloria

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

When Blue Bird and her grandmother leave their family’s camp to gather beans for the long, threatening winter, they inadvertently avoid the horrible fate that befalls the rest of the family. Luckily, the two women are adopted by a nearby Dakota community and are eventually integrated into their kinship circles. Ella Cara Deloria’s tale follows Blue Bird and her daughter, Waterlily, through the intricate kinship practices that created unity among her people. The Logic Of Religious Studies And Kathleen Flake, Blair Dee Hodges Jan 2009

The Logic Of Religious Studies And Kathleen Flake, Blair Dee Hodges

Arrington Student Writing Award Winners

Kathleen Flake’s 2009 Arrington lecture gave a sneak preview of research she has been conducting on the topic of plural marriage and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. Flake, associate professor of American religious history at Vanderbilt University, brings a unique list of qualifications to her study by combining elements of law, religious studies, ritual, and the skills of an historian. Using these tools Flake explores what she calls the “priestly logic” of plural marriage, seeking to understand not only how 19th century outsiders viewed the peculiar institution, but how practicing Mormons themselves made sense of it. Flake …

Happiness In Plural Marriage: An Exploration Of Logic, Audrey Mcconkie Merket Jan 2009

Happiness In Plural Marriage: An Exploration Of Logic, Audrey Mcconkie Merket

Arrington Student Writing Award Winners

It is difficult for any monogamous person, but especially a monogamous woman to understand how living a life of polygamy could be considered joyful and fulfilling. Being a young woman, happily married to my “true love,” the idea that the same kind of happiness I feel could exist in a plural relationship at first seemed completely illogical to me. However, as Kathleen Flake pointed out in the 2009 Arrington Memorial Lecture, “logic is not an absolute set of assertions about something. People that share your premises will think you’re logical, whereas people that don’t believe the same things as you …

Eulogy For Apollo: Synesthesia And Musicality In Andrei Bely's Petersburg And James Joyce's Ulysses, David Rodriguez Jan 2009

Eulogy For Apollo: Synesthesia And Musicality In Andrei Bely's Petersburg And James Joyce's Ulysses, David Rodriguez

Theses & ETDs

Petersburg and Ulysses are often compared within the Modernist movement as texts which capture the urban landscapes of the early twentieth-century by means of radical experimentation with language. Petersburg examines a specific tumultuous moment in Russian history, October of 1905, and tethers it to a unique brand of synesthetic and musical poetics. The narrative portrays the cosmic and ineffable qualities of the political and social climate, suggesting an apocalyptic transformation taking place within the city. Nietzsche's Apollonian-Dionysian duality of the arts developed in Birth of Tragedy can be usefully applied to understanding the novel's complex imagery and style, which assert …
