Change Blindness In The Synthetic Vision Primary Flight Display: Comparing Eye Tracking Patterns With Pilot Attention, Stephen A. Mayo Oct 2009

Change Blindness In The Synthetic Vision Primary Flight Display: Comparing Eye Tracking Patterns With Pilot Attention, Stephen A. Mayo

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

There have been a number of important advances in aviation technology that have made the safety rating of flying the best that it has ever been. One of the most important advances made has been in the interface that the pilot relies on for their most critical information during flight. New aviation displays have empirically shown a wide range of improvements across pilot performance. Despite these improvements, there is still a high possibility that pilots may miss pertinent information that changes may occur simultaneously with some sort of distraction - a concept known as change blindness. This study analyzed how …

Treatment Response In Depressed Adolescents With And Without Co-Morbid Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder In The Treatment For Adolescents With Depression Study., Christopher J. Kratochvil, Diane E. May, Susan G. Silva, Vishal Madaan, Susan E. Puumala, John F. Curry, John Walkup, Hayden Kepley, Benedetto Vitiello, John S. March

Journal Articles: Psychiatry

OBJECTIVE: In the Treatment for Adolescents with Depression Study (TADS), fluoxetine (FLX) and the combination of fluoxetine with cognitive-behavioral therapy (COMB) had superior improvement trajectories compared to pill placebo (PBO), whereas cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) was not significantly different from PBO. Because attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) frequently co-exist, we examined whether ADHD moderated these outcomes in TADS.

METHOD: A total of 439 adolescents with MDD, 12-17 years old, were randomized to FLX, CBT, COMB, or PBO. Random coefficients regression models examined depression improvement in 377 depressed youths without ADHD and 62 with ADHD, including 20 who were …

The Declining Significance Of Presidential Races?, Angela Onwuachi-Willig, Osamudia James

Faculty Scholarship

This Symposium Essay examines the campaign that led up to the last presidential election to illuminate the complex interplay between race and class within our society. Specifically, it explores how race and class functioned together to disadvantage President Obama in the race to the White House (even as he ultimately won the election). Section II focuses on how Obama’s income, job status, and prestigious education functioned as markers of elitism during the campaign, even as compared to opponents with more elite and wealthier backgrounds, and how these factors were used as tools by his opponents to convince lower-class white voters …

Etsu Today - Fall 2009, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU Today [magazine]

Despite the economy, ETSU remains strong. After a year of buyouts and budget cuts, East Tennessee State University is still strong, the school’s president said in August. Delivering the annual state of the university address at the faculty convocation Friday, Dr. Paul Stanton, ETSU president, said the challenges ETSU faced in the 2008-2009 fiscal year were tough but manageable because of good planning and good employees. “When I delivered the state of the university address last year, I was preparing for ... retirement, having made that announcement for medical reasons,” Stanton told the faculty gathered in the school’s D.P. Culp …

A Proposal For 'Philosophical Method' In Comparative And International Law, John Martin Gillroy Oct 2009

A Proposal For 'Philosophical Method' In Comparative And International Law, John Martin Gillroy

Pace International Law Review Online Companion

A basic challenge of contemporary thought is to better understand the origin, persistence, and future course of international/ comparative law. I suggest that a foundational step is to begin treating the law as a philosophical matter. I propose that comparative and international legal theory require a distinct methodology that is as integrated and systematic as positivism, but which better recognizes the dialectic interdependence of normative and empirical and the metaphysical interdependence of theory and practice. Philosophical Method, as systematized by R.G. Collingwood, promotes the dialectic over the eristic, looks for overlap rather than definitive scientific classification, argues for comprehensive philosophy …

“They’Re Supportive, But. . .”: Female Graduate Students And Their Parents’ Reactions To Graduate Education, Rosalie S. Aldrich

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

In 2001, there were approximately 1.9 million graduate students in American universities, and a majority of them were women. Graduate students are under a considerable amount of stress and strain, and parents can be a source of social support for their children; however, little research has been done regarding graduate students and the support they receive from their parents. The purpose of this study was to explore parents’ reactions to their daughters’ choice to pursue a graduate degree. Data were collected through open-ended interviews with 18 female graduate students. Results indicated that parents’ reactions to their daughter going to graduate …

Discriminatory Acquittal, Tania Tetlow Oct 2009

Discriminatory Acquittal, Tania Tetlow

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

This article is the first to analyze a pervasive and unexplored constitutional problem: the rights of crime victims against unconstitutional discrimination by juries. From the Emmett Till trial to that of Rodney King, there is a long history of juries acquitting white defendants charged with violence against black victims. Modem empirical evidence continues to show a devaluation of black victims; dramatic disparities exist in death sentence and rape conviction rates according to the race of the victim. Moreover, just as juries have permitted violence against those who allegedly violated the racial order, juries use acquittals to punish female victims of …
