Threshold And Memory: A New Theoretical Model For Athlete Cam Use, Ben Koh Oct 2009

Threshold And Memory: A New Theoretical Model For Athlete Cam Use, Ben Koh

Medical Conference Papers

Introduction: The role of theory in research cannot be over emphasised. Present literature on athlete complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use poses two problems: in the few studies on CAM use that have utilised theory, the use of theory has been inconsistent or lack validation; in athlete motivational studies, theoretical models focused on the athlete and the sport and not on health-seeking. Many theories exist in the literature to help explain health-seeking behaviour, but the bulk of studies that employ theory focused on the general nonathlete population and mainly applied in the setting of conventional medicine use. Difficulties in using …

Humor In Preaching: Its Effects And Guidelines For Its Beneficial Use, Antonin Troup Oct 2009

Humor In Preaching: Its Effects And Guidelines For Its Beneficial Use, Antonin Troup

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

This project examined the effects that humor in sermons has on hearers, particularly how humor affects their understanding and retention of Biblical truths. After exploring humor's effects on listeners and which types of humor are more beneficial in the task of preaching through theoretical research, the data was investigated through the use of questionnaires, personal interviews with church members, and a focus group. After analyzing the participants' responses, the researcher developed a list of guidelines for the beneficial use of humor in his preaching. These guidelines offer suggestions that other preachers may find helpful in using humor in their sermons.

Demonstrates how Jim Henson’s film Labyrinth traces its ancestry to the dream vision genre exemplified by such medieval works as “Pearl” and The Divine Comedy, showing how the dream vision parallels and guides main character Sarah’s growth toward emotional maturity. Also addresses the way Sarah deals with the prospect of sexual maturity, rejecting a too-early adulthood.

From "Thank You For Your Support", Brian Russell Hauser

Harlot: A Revealing Look at the Arts of Persuasion

This excerpt from the first chapter of a memoir-in-progress is an attempt to capture my thoughts and emotions at the moment I realized I was being called to war. I left the U.S. Army to attend graduate school in 1999 only to be involuntarily called back into active military service one year into the War on Terror. Instead of painting a static picture of what I must have felt like when I received the news, I use my mobilization orders (the document itself) as the focus of a sort of running rhetorical critique that allows those thoughts and feelings to …

First placed there as a memorial to American’s who served in WWI, this Christian symbol is said to violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. Before reaching the merits, however, the Court must first pass on the question of standing to sue. The plaintiff, Frank Buono, is a former employee of the National Park Service and objects to the …
